October 2018

Who are your people?

People who live in the Deep South have not so subtle ways of figuring out your true identity. There are

the thinly veiled and loaded questions to be asked such as: Who’s your momma or who are your people?

Now you might not give it a whole lot of thought but the answer to either of those questions can either

open doors that will welcome you with open arms or they will cause those same doors to be slammed shut

in your face. So carefully consider your answers and do tread lightly.

The truth is that it is part of the human condition to try and identify which one of the many “tribes” to

which you might belong. This time of year, more often it is expressed passionately by which SEC school you

cheer for during football season. I mention the SEC because we all know that nobody else plays real football

outside of the SEC.

Some of us will sing Rocky Top. Others like to sing Hey Fighting Tigers. Of course, it seems that

almost everyone else roots against Alabama. So point in fact, which SEC team that you say is your team re-

ally does say quite a bit about you.

On Sunday the 23rd of September, I will be traveling along with 22 other people from All Saints’

Church over to Ireland for a spiritual pilgrimage. For me part of this is about reconnecting with my people.

For my last birthday my children gave me a DNA test kit. According to 23 and Me, I am 56% Irish/English.

It turns out that the Irish are my people. Of course I’ve known this for years. My paternal grandfather and

my namesake, used to revel in sharing stories about my Irish heritage with me.

On another level, part of this trip will be about reconnecting with how St. Patrick, the patron saint of

Ireland, brought the Christian faith to the Irish people and how it gracefully merged with Celtic spirituality.

The Celtic Christians are also my people.

There is something that resonates inside my soul whenever I’m in Ireland. There is something deep

within me that connects with my Christian faith when I am walking among the ancient Irish ruins. I’m look-

ing forward to going back to St. John’s Church in Tralee where I spent my last sabbatical discerning where

God was leading me next. As it turns out, I was led by God to Morristown, TN.

Now, a year and a half later, it seems that my new people are mountain people. They love the color

orange. They also love the great outdoors. My new people have big hearts and they have found room for

someone like me who was once a stranger to be able to find a new home far from the swamps and bayous.

I’m also thankful that my new people are willing to tolerate my occasional wearing of purple and gold.

Peace, Mark+

Fall is in the Air

Fall is officially upon us. Or is it Autumn? I tend to get those two seasons jumbled together!

While Lin and I loved our time in Florida, having both been raised in the Great State of Ohio, we tended to miss the change of seasons. The changing of the color of the leaves, the dropping of the leaves, the raking of the leaves……. As usual, I digress, but there is something special about Fall/Autumn. The air smells different, retirees can sleep later due to sunrise not awakening us, and it is time to get the gardens set up for the coming winter.

Weather permitting, by the time you read this the Bar-B-Que sauce will be made and gently “aging” in the five-gallon containers. Why is this important? Because it means barbeque is right around the corner. And it does take a Village to raise a barbeque. Talk about giving of one’s Time, Talents, and Treasures. Without all the volunteers’ assistance, we could never have such a successful fund raiser for our wonderful church.

Not to imply that it only takes a Village to raise a barbeque. Just look at all the folks involved in the wonderful Outreach programs that our church has generated. It is truly a great time to be one of All Saints’!

Then before we know it, the Bishop will be here for All Saints’ Sunday celebration and confirmation/baptism. What a joyous occasion that will be!

And yet, there is the big question remaining in the Fall of 2018... will the Vols win another football game? I am hopeful since Charlotte is left on the schedule.

From the Junior Warden

The first coat of paint is on the West side doors and railing. A second coat

should be completed next week. A BIG THANKS to Wayne Stambaugh and Zack

Sawyer for taking on this project. When these are completed we plan to move on to

the doors on the Church Street side. Volunteers are needed and welcomed to com-

plete this painting project. Please see the Jr. Warden if you can help.

The new security system is installed, and new FOBS are being distributed. We

should go live Friday, October 5. See Lynne Ann if you have been assigned one and

have not picked it up yet.

Over the next few weeks Comer Electric should begin replacing lights in the

downstairs hallways, Father Mark’s office, Lynne Ann’s office, and the Undercroft.

Most of the fixtures are in, but we are still waiting on some. Todd with Comer

Electric will be in touch with me with an installation schedule.

Plans for remolding the Undercroft meeting area. We need to plan a work

scheduled based on several factors.

• When are the cabinets and other supplies available.

• Volunteers workers for the tear out and demolition for the area.

• Paint and other materials needed for the area.

• Volunteers for painting and prepping the area for new cabinets and counter tops.

• Installation of cabinets and counter tops, etc.

There will be more to follow in the next weeks once we have a more definite schedule.

If anyone is interested in helping on any phase of this project, please contact Bob Har-

mon or Henry Selby.

October is here and I am wondering what happened to September. I do know that in September Bingo

reached a new milestone. Seventy-seven friends from Morristown Housing Authority came by for a BBQ lunch

and Bingo. Could the reason so many showed up be because Marylou Mauney was not there? We will

probably never know. But this I do know - Bingo will be on the third Wednesday in October. The reason for

that is BBQ. So instead of being on October 10th the second Wednesday it will be October 17th the third

Wednesday. All Saints’ Men will be donating the prizes for this Bingo.

The loose offering for the 2nd Sunday in October will go to Bingo. This will help with food, gift cards and

operational cost like plates and napkins etc. So please give as you can on Sunday October 14th.

The Outreach committee will be providing pizza and drinks for the BBQ workers and folks from our community

who’ve become regulars at our Agape dinners. This will be on October 10th and depending on how the

remodeling is going in the undercroft, could be in the parish hall or the undercroft. Look for more information

about the location in the Sunday bulletin.

Food on Foot bags will be filled at the October 3rd and October 17th Agape dinners. Distribution will be on

October 27th at the Food on Foot location at 1 Berkline Drive in Morristown.

Thanks to all that donated to Oasis Coffee Ministries – the total for them was $276.00. If you missed a chance

to donate money there is a box in the narthex with a list of items Oasis needs continually. Just drop them off in

the box and Outreach will deliver them.

The Men of All Saints’ recently went out to Doc Rooney’s and did some weed-eating, and brush, clean up. He is

so very thankful for the help. The Boy Scouts have done a lot of work out there also. Later in the fall the Men

will take him some firewood and kindling.

Outreach will be meeting on October 16th in the parish hall for dessert and a brief business meeting. We will

meet at 6pm, so if after your dinner you would like some dessert you know where to go.

Have you seen those folks gathering in the corner of the

Parish Hall near a sign proclaiming “Table Talk”? This is the

Sunday morning activity for adults brought to you by the

Adult Education Committee! Each week (except on breakfast

Sundays and other obvious conflicts) the group gathers to

discuss issues that divide rather than reconcile. The discus

sion is driven by a book or other material that helps us listen

to each other, to hear voices other than our own, and to find

and appreciate each person’s role in the Body of Christ.

How do you sign up? You don’t! Just grab your coffee and pull up a chair.

It’s great fun . . . and is a splendid opportunity to stretch your mind and spirit.

Oh, and don’t forget that each Wednesday morning at 10:00 we offer Bible

Study. That night at 5:30 we have a great dinner followed by a short! program

at Agape.

All are welcome!

Thank you Parish Family for all your support!

Happy 93rd to Doc Rooney!!!
