A year and a half ago, Google released its first earth-shaking change. That change is now known as the Panda update, and it has shaken the very ground of SEO and online marketing for the last 15 months. In late April 2012, Google released the Penguin update, yet again turning SEO on its head. If you look in online forums like the Warrior Forum, you see tens and hundreds of marketers crying into their keyboards on a daily basis, wondering what went wrong and why their sites are no longer ranked at the top of the Google SERPs. Internet Marketers adjusted their methods and began to put spun articles 1 on their sites and the use programs like SE Nuke X to blast them all over the Internet. Those articles and forum posts had links embedded in them, and when Google got around to indexing that page, it would add a +1 to the database for the site that was backlinked. Eventually, once you amassed enough backlinks, you rose to the top of the search engine rankings because Google’s algorithm assumed that more backlinks meant you had a better site. 1 Article spinning is normally done through the use of software. THE TRUTH ABOUT UNIQUE CONTENT

With the latest changes to the secret algorithm that Google uses to deliver high quality search results to its users, thousands of Internet Marketers were literally put out of business overnight. A year and a half ago, Google released its first earth-shaking change. That change is now known as the Panda update, and it has shaken the very ground of SEO and online marketing for the last 15 months. Google’s Penguin update demolished that. According to an article published recently by SearchEngineLand.com, the Penguin update was designed to combat 4 things:

1. Keyword Stuffing 2. Link Schemes 3. Cloaking & “Sneaky” Pages 4. Purposefully Duplicate Content

Through an interview with Matt Cutts, Google’s chief in charge of the algorithm (or at least the person responsible for relaying the changes and updates to the general public), Google is doing their best to get rid of low quality content and provide the absolute best user experience for anyone using their search engine. This means that they are getting rid of marketers employing spammy sites, tons of irrelevant backlinks, and other methods that are commonly used to incorrectly bring a site to the top of the search results. Cutts even said to “focus on creating high quality sites” and “employ White Hat SEO methods” in order to make a site more Google-friendly.
