INTRODUCTION

The world of nutritional supplementation has grown enormously in the last several years. Americans will spend over $5 billion a year on vitamins and mineral supplements alone. The world of cleansing and detoxification has grown very rapidly as well. The Internet is filled with free advice and recommendations about cleansing detoxification and supplements to the point where it has become very difficult to figure out the right way to go. The bigger the industry gets the more confusing it all becomes.

The nutritional industry itself is to blame at least to some extent. Instead of having simple multivitamins and minerals that are easy for people to take, the industry has sepa-rated out nutrients to the point were people need five or six different bottles to get all they need insofar as the different nutrients are concerned. The detoxification and cleansing world is in the same state as there are specific cleanses and detoxes for different organs and conditions.

The purpose of this guide is to allow people to have a basic understanding of how the body functions so that they can approach this concept of supplementation cleansing and detoxification in the simplest fashion possible. Why? Because if it's too difficult and con-fusing then people just won't do it.

In this guide you will learn the most basic and fundamental approach to cleansing and detoxification. As always, getting to the root cause of an issue is the most efficient way to deal with it. You will learn what is the root cause of toxicity and what is the linch-pin for freeing the body of toxins. You will also learn what the best supplements are to take on a daily basis.

Although this guide is meant to be just that, a guide, product recommendations will be made, as there are so few that fill the bill. The product recommendations at the end of the book are the simplest and most cost-effective way to get the highest quality results available.

ARE YOU TOXIC?

Do you drink water? Do you breathe air? Do you eat food bought at the supermar-

ket? Do you drink water in plastic bottles? Do you eat food with artificial colorings and

preservatives? Do you occasionally eat fast food? Do you take prescription drugs?

If the answer is yes to any of these questions then you are undoubtedly toxic. Bodies

are very well equipped to deal with environmental toxins that are natural to the human

experience. Conversely, they have a very limited ability to deal with inorganic and un-

natural toxins.

The toxins we are exposed to are only one side of the equation. The other side of the

equation is the toxins that our body cannot expel. The more processed our foods become,

the less fiber content they provide. When you add both sides together, we find ourselves

in the midst of a toxic crisis globally.

We find ourselves adapting to this situation by redefining terms. Constipation is now

defined as having less then three bowel movements per week! The body's physiology is

designed to eliminate toxins 2 to 3 times a day! This is one of many examples of our cul-

ture adapting to a negative environment. We have accepted fast food as a necessary way

of life. Unfortunately, any dinner that gets passed through a car window is loaded with

toxins!

Let's address these toxic sources one at a time.

Water:

The water supply of several metropolitan areas was found to have everything from

antidepressants to antibiotics contaminating their water supply.

Why is this?

When we consume a medication or drug, only a percentage of it is absorbed by the

body. The rest of it is passed off and expelled by the body. This winds up in our commu-

nity water supply. Eventually, this water evaporates and becomes part of the cloud forma-

tion that circulates globally and distributes water to rainfall. This water is contaminated,

and therefore so is everything that consumes it and lives in it. Even salmon in the high Si-

erras have been found to contain pharmaceuticals including antibiotics!

any number lower than seven actually allows the plastic to leak into the water you are

Air:

Air-quality is probably the

granddaddy of environmental

concerns in terms of public

awareness. It's obvious by look-

ing at the skyline of any major

metropolitan area that the air is

dirty. Unfortunately, the contami-

nants are not restricted to hydro-

carbons. (3) But even if they were, human beings were

not designed to inhale them in those quantities.

Food:

In the past, food was grown in a sustainable and all natural environment. There was

no need to label food "organic "because all of it was! Natural fertilizers, the rotation of

crops, and hydration with pure water were the norm. Our fruits and vegetables no longer

have all the nutrients that nature intended and that is not only affects us, but also the cows

and chickens and pigs etc.

None of this is standard

practice anymore. The re-

sult? Food that is deficient in

many nutrients including

enzymes as well as flavor.

utes to scar tissue and toxic-

ity in a very interesting way.

Evidence of this lack of en-

zyme activity is the fact that

an apple can sit on your

countertop for weeks and

never change. A general

rule of thumb is that some-

The animals that provide or highest-quality source of protein "are what they eat".

What do they eat? Foods that are deficient in nutrients as well as antibiotics, hormones,

and God knows what else. Billions of dollars of research is not necessary to tell us what

common sense should make obvious.

Chemicals:

Preservatives, colorings, flavorings, all contrib-

ute to the level of toxicity that we are exposed to

every day.  These are not limited to the food we eat.

The synthetic colorings, flame retardant's and fibers

that we wear are again not part of our natural envi-

ronment. Although the amounts that wind up inside

our body each day our minute, day after day and year

after year they become much more significant.

Drugs:

Drugs, pushed or prescribed, have very very dangerous side effects as we all know by

the advertisements on television. As necessary as these medications may be to sustain life,

none of them actually make us

truly healthy. Most of us living in

the United States are on multiple

medications by the time we are

at retirement age. (5) The com-

bination of side effects coupled

with the residue that accumulates in the body all contribute to our levels of toxicity over

time.

While we may be living a few years longer, we are spending many more years at the

latter part of life, sick from heart disease cancer and arthritis. (6) Excessive levels of toxic-

ity may be contributing to this more than we realize.

Genetics:

We have been taught that it is our genetics that determine whether or not we experi-

ence cancer heart disease arthritis etc. This is known as genetic determinism. If we take a

step back and look at this logically, things

do not add up.

The number of people diagnosed

with cancer and heart disease is climbing

steadily year after year. (7) If we accept

genetic Determinism as the cause, then

our genetic code must be deteriorating

over time.

A much more reasonable explanation is genetic predisposition. This principle states

that while we may be predisposed for certain diseases because of our genetic makeup, it is

always environmental factors that determine the expression of this predisposition or ten-

dency. This is why genetic predisposition to diseases not expressed evenly, even within a

single-family unit.

Again, even the most casual unbiased observation sees the obvious relationship be-

tween increased environmental toxicity and the incidence of cancer heart disease etc.

In fact, Nobel prize-winning Bruce Lipton PhD has gone as far as to say that toxins

actually cause genetic mutation through adaptive aberrations. (8) This is a major concern

as now we may be affecting the health and vitality of future generations through the toxic-

ity that we allow to linger in our bodies and therefore alter our genetic code.

The world health organization's definition of health is: a state of complete physical

mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.     Unfor-

tunately our entire "health care "system is not designed to do much until you are outside

that scope of the definition of health.

I was in private practice for 25 years and cannot count the number of times that peo-

ple came to me thinking they were healthy while on 3 to 5 different medications. Our re-

cord was one woman that was currently on 33 medications. It started with a painkiller for

back pain that led to problems in elimination that led to gastric reflux that lead to anemia

that led to depression and on and on and on it went.

I could not help but think that if I were on 33 medications I would look and feel like

she did.

As she began to eliminate toxicity from her body, needs for her medications began to

subside. With the help of her prescribing physician, she was able to get off of all medica-

tions except one. It is just unfortunate that eliminating the toxins was not seen as the first

logical step prior to the advent of the medication merry go round.

As we will learn in the following chapter, the introduction of toxins leads to a series

of events internally that compromise ones overall health and well-being in every way.

The Physiology.

Most people that do or cleanse or a detox are not interested in understanding every-

thing about the body. However, understanding some of the basics help us choose the de-

tox or cleanse that is best suited for us. We

will review the basics on how our bodies

work so that we can make the best decisions

regarding the process so that no time or

money is wasted.

When we eat an apple for instance, we chew

it and swallow it and digestion process be-

gins. Chemicals are secreted in the mouth

that begins to break down the food and this

process continues in the stomach. The food

itself is supposed to contain enzymes that

help break it down so that it can be assimilated by the body. As the food is churned in the

stomach, it is mixed with chemicals and acids that break it down even more. From there

the food is moved into the small intestine. This is where some of the absorption of nutri-

ents occurs if the food has been broken down the way that it was designed to be in the

stomach. As it moves from the small intestine to the large intestine it stimulates bile secre-

tion from the liver and gallbladder. This is a key process that helps to assimilate fat and

make the system alkaline. In fact, the body's number one source of alkalinity is the liver

and bile system!

The food is then moved through the colon and finally eliminated.

Congestion and Stasis Lead to Plaque.

When we consume food that is low in natural enzymes because of the way they are

grown, the food is not broken down as completely as it should be. This is the first step in a

digestive tract becoming

congested. Not only that,

the vital nutrients in the

food are not delivered to

the places in the body that

need them the most.

The toxins that are

contained in the food we

eat, pesticides hormones

etc, are absorbed into the

bloodstream.

The organ that is responsible for breaking naturally occurring toxic substances down

is the liver. As more and more of these non-naturally occurring toxins circulate in the

bloodstream, they accumulate in the liver, as it was not designed to break these substances

down. As this process develops, the liver becomes more and more congested with every

toxin we introduce.

As the liver and bile system become congested, they are less able to do their job,

which is to produce the body's number one source of alkalinity. This alkaline compound

is what is secreted from the gall bladder.

This in turn makes us acidic. Over time, acidic plaque begins to form on the colon

wall. The more this process is allowed to continue, the more plaque builds. Think of

acidic plaque as something similar to the plaque that builds up around a car battery cable.

Again, the more this process is left unchecked, the more acidic we become and as we will

see that is one of the key components to a loss of health. (9)

The Importance of Alkalinity.

The human body is a symphony of finely tuned functions that have very specific de-

sign parameters. One of these specific design parameters is the bloodstream pH or acid

base balance.

One of the key functions that are so im-

portant in the human body is the body's

system of hormones. Hormones like

estrogen testosterone and insulin were

designed to function with in this very

specific pH range. The more acidic we

become the less these hormones function as designed. (10) When the liver and bile sys-

tem become congested, then the body's natural source of alkalinity is not able to flow at

an optimal rate. A vicious cycle between liver congestion and hormone malfunction en-

sues.

When the liver is congested, the body must produce more estrogens to compensate

for their acidic ineffectiveness. This causes even more congestion because now the liver

has to break down that excess estrogen. As the liver attempts to break down that excess

estrogen it becomes more congested and therefore we become more acidic and the cycle

goes on and on.

The blood levels of denatured estrogens rise, and this begins to interfere with thyroid

function. Compromised thyroid hormone function leads to more weight gain and more

fatty deposits in and on the liver. At this contributes to the liver congestion merry go

round even more!

The Vicious Cycle … Start at the Source!

Most cleanses and detox systems focus on the colon. This helps rid the body of mu-

coid plaque and people generally feel better, at least for a while. Because the source of

plaque, which is the liver toxicity, was

never addressed the mucoid plaque be-

gins to rebuild almost immediately. The

results and improvement that people felt

only lasts a short while.

The commonsense approach is to detox

the liver first. This allows the alkaline

bile system to flow so that once the co-

lon walls are clean they have a chance at

staying that way.

  Additionally, the addition of enzymes

and probiotics help keep the internal

mechanism working the way it was de-

signed. And genetically deficient foods contribute to the accumulation of plaque, so the

addition of enzymes to the diet help keep that process in check.

Most people have had several episodes with antibiotics, which ultimately destroy the

Okay. We have done our detox and gone through the process. Don't you think it's a

good idea to keep up the good work? It's a lot simpler and a lot easier than you think to

maintain a much higher level of health Energy and vitality.

The most obvious first step is to minimize the amount of toxins that you have volun-

tary control over. This means saying no to fast food and temptations of the Like. The easi-

est way to do that is to have good food available at all times! And what are good foods?

Fruit vegetables and lean proteins are the things that your body was designed to consume

and assimilate. Here is a good general rule of thumb: if man-made it, don't eat it!

Do your shopping twice weekly and avoid things in a box a bag or a can… It is as

simple as that. I myself like to cook a large batch of chicken fish or lean red meat about

twice a week so that it is ready when I am ready. Precut salads of an organic nature are

available at the supermarket. A recipe for a homemade salad dressing will be at the end of

this chapter… And it is phenomenal! It also only takes about two minutes to prepare. Egg

whites are available in the dairy case as well as many other easy to prepare proteins. The

most important thing to remember while shopping is to never do it while you are hungry!

The most important thing to remember is that when you stay away from fast food long

enough, if you go back to it, it won't taste very good. Your taste buds will get healthy as

you get healthy.

Water. The first step in Detox.

The substance necessary for life as we know it. How much do we need as human

beings and what are the consequences if we don't consume the right amount?

Drinking too much water is very difficult. Most people err on the side of not drinking

enough. We have heard that it should be between eight and 10 8 ounce glasses each day.

But does a one size fits all mentality really make sense with water consumption?

There are many factors that influence the amount of water we should consume. The

quality of the water, the alkalinity of the individual, the activity level of the individual all

plays a part in determining how much water you should consume.

Most importantly, the size of the individual should determine the volume of water

that you consume.

  A good rule of thumb is one half ounce per pound of body weight. A 100-pound

woman would consume 50 ounces or approximately 6 eight-ounce glasses. A 200-pound

man would consume double that amount.

  Individuals that are highly active in competitive athletics etc. should consume an

additional 50% volume minimum.

  Other factors that influence the amount of water we drink is our body’s alkalinity.

People that are acidic are generally toxic and therefore need to consume more water for

many reasons. First, the water itself will help to neutralize the acidity. Secondarily, the

more blood volume we have the faster the kidneys will cycle toxins out of the blood-

stream. People that are acidic or have a tendency towards being acidic also need to con-

sume some sort of supplement that contains super greens. These will help to change the

pH in the bloodstream and will aid in the water absorption into the cell.

  Of course we want to drink water that is free from environmental pollutants when-

ever possible. Recent study in Europe demonstrated that water contaminated with antide-

pressants had a similar effect on fish as these substances have on humans! Antisocial be-

havior and other things not natural to the marine environment were documented. When

humans consume drugs as well as preservatives, much of this passes from our urine into

the water supply.

Gross but true! Salmon in the high Sierra have even been found to contain antibiot-

ics! Obviously we need to have a good three-stage filter for our water.

The bottle that we consume our water from is equally important. Each drinking water

bottle has a numerical stamp on the bottom and anything less than number seven means

that the plastic can leak into the water itself. Instead of buying water in plastic bottles, it is

much more economical and much more healthy to consume water from a glass container.

Glass water bottles with the outside lined in rubber are now available and they seem to

make the most sense.

To sum it up, the bigger you are, the more active you are, the more acidic you are,

and the more water you need to drink!

Best part? When you're consuming the right quality and amount of water, your

bloodstream pH becomes more alkaline and everything works a little better. When you're

hormonal level is optimized your metabolism has a chance to speed up. When we are too

acidic the hormones don't work as well so the body needs to produce even more to com-

pensate for the poor function of these chemicals in an acidic environment. The byproduct

of metabolizing this excess hormone is a slowdown in your metabolism as well as the

compromise of your overall health and well-being. So drink up!

There are many supplements that will help keep the body in a detoxified state in between formal detoxes.

. Here are a few:

Vitamins and Minerals.

A quality multivitamin and multi-mineral is essential for keeping the body healthy

and detoxified. Your body's immune system is dependent on these micronutrients and

keeping them available to the body is essential. This should contain vitamin C, a full

complex of B vitamins, vitamin D three, vitamin E to name a few.

Minerals like selenium magnesium and calcium all play a vital role in body function.

Beyond that, all vitamins and minerals work together with all other vitamins and minerals

somewhere in the histo-chemical chain.

Super Greens.

Super greens are botanical based nutrients that provide another source of vitamins

and minerals. Because they are naturally occurring, they have combinations that are op-

timal for body absorption and nutrition. Most multivitamin multi mineral supplements are

lacking in one or two micronutrients. This is why a super green is important as it provides

As we learned earlier, enzymes break down the food we eat so that we can digest it

completely and in the proper time and place. When these enzymes are lacking, food is

not broken down completely and nutrients are lost. Also, proteins fats and carbohydrates

that are in the wrong place at the wrong time can harm the body many different ways.

Where Have All the Enzymes Gone?

Enzymes are critical to health and your metabolism. Enzymes are contained in the

food we eat and they break that food down so that our body can absorb it. When your

body consumes calories that it cannot absorb they get stored in the body's basement. The

body’s basement is a nice way to refer to your belly and your butt!

The enzyme content in our food has been reduced 60 to 80%! (13) What this means

is that potentially half of the calories you consume are going into storage because they

cannot be processed correctly. Not only does this make you fat, it also reduces your en-

ergy level and slows your metabolism.

Another critical function of enzymes in the bloodstream is the consumption of scar

tissue. Think of enzymes as the little scrubbing bubbles eating away at arterial plaque and

degenerative changes in the joints. The severe reduction in enzyme content may be part

of what is responsible for the radical increase in circulatory disease and arthritis. (14)

Liver Toxicity and Well-Being.

In this chapter will be discussing various disease states and how liver toxicity may

contribute to their development. We are in no way saying that detoxification of the liver

will cure these ailments, but we do know that if you are toxic, the healing process will not

be what it could be. This is true prevention. We will be discussing this concept in further

detail in the epilogue.

Diabetes.

When we think of diabetes, we think primarily that it is a disease that somehow at-

tacks the pancreas. While this may be somewhat true in type one diabetes, type two May

have a very different etiology.

If we back up and take a look at

sugar metabolism, we dis-

cover that the liver has a sig-

nificant role to play. Glycolo-

sis is a function whereby the

liver turns sugar into energy.

(18) When the liver is unable to do this,

sugars circulate in the bloodstream

much longer than they were designed to. This may lead to an overstimulation of the pan-

creas, which is an organ that responds to blood levels of sugar. This overstimulation may

lead to a "burnout "of the pancreas over time.

The initial phase of pancreatic over stimulation is referred to as hypoglycemia. This is

not the opposite of diabetes, this is the precursor. People in a hypoglycemic state have ex-

Circulatory Disease.

In order to understand circulatory disease, we must first understand just a little bit

ing the next layer. This is when certain proteins and fats can stick and begin building

plaque. This phenomenon is further accelerated because the circulating sugars cause the

acidic in nature just like the plaque that lines the battery cable in your car.

The thyroid hormone levels may be normal, but their access to the cell may be being

Scientific process begins with an observation, moves to the laboratory, and ends with

observation. It seems as though the scientific community, at least in the United States, has

failed to do the last step.

Statistics may show success with treatment of diseases of all types and this is signifi-

cant. Cancer survival rates are important as our "cure "rates. By far, the most important

statistic is the incidences of new cases that are reported annually. It is obvious that those

statistics are going in the wrong direction.

We spent $2.5 trillion on "health "care in this country alone. That number is ex-

pected to double within the next 5 to 10 years. Logically we must ask the question, if it

As long as we are focused on fighting disease, the war is lost. There is nothing in tra-

ditional health care that prevents anything, as even early screenings are just that. Screen-

ings to determine if we already have the disease, which is a wasteful attempt at best.

Why? Because by the time I diagnosis has been made you have had the disease for quite

some time.

The Mayo Clinic stated recently that before a woman can detect cancer with a

mammogram or self-exam, it has been developing for at least five years inside of her body.
