AS GRACE SAVES ONE, SO IT SAVES

ALL!

HOW WERE “THEY” SAVED

BY GRACE?

CORNELIUS & HOUSEHOLD

(A)

“They” Were Saved By GRACE

• When They Heard & Believed The Gospel– “And when there had been much dispute,

Peter rose up and said to them: ‘Men and brethren, you know that a good while ago God chose among us, that by my mouth the Gentiles should hear the word of the gospel and believe’” (Acts 15:7; cf. 11:14)

“They” Were Saved By GRACE

• How did they “believe the gospel?”– In “obeying” the gospel…– “He is lodging with Simon, a tanner, whose

house is by the sea. He will tell you what you must do” (Acts 10:6)

– “To Him all the prophets witness that, through His name, whoever believes in Him will receive remission of sins” (Acts 10:43)

“Who” is the one who “through His name” BELIEVES?

The one who receives the word and is immersed (baptized)– “But when they believed Philip as he preached the

things concerning the kingdom of God and the name of Jesus Christ, both men and women were baptized” (Acts 8:12, cf. 5:14)

– “And with many other words he testified and exhorted them, saying, ‘Be saved from this perverse generation.’ Then those who gladly received his word were baptized; and that day about three thousand souls were added to them” (Acts 2:40, 41, cf. in the name of v. 38)

“They” Were Saved By GRACE

• How did they “believe the gospel?”

• “Through His Name” (Acts 10:43)– “Can anyone forbid water, that these should

not be baptized who have received the Holy Spirit just as we have? And he commanded them to be baptized in the name of the Lord. Then they asked him to stay a few days” (Acts 10:47, 48)

“He will tell you what you must do”

(Acts 10:6; cf. 10:33)

“A People For His Name”

• “Simon has declared how God at the first visited the Gentiles to take out of them a people for His name” (Acts 15:14)

• God chose Peter(Acts 15:7; 11:12)

• God visited Gentiles(Acts 15:14; 11:17, 18; cf. Lk. 1:67-69)

save from sin, but to display an open door for Gentiles to come to God

through the name of Christ

Acts 15:15-1815 "And with this the words of the prophets agree, just as it is written:16 ‘After this I will return And will rebuild the tabernacle of David, which has fallen down; I will rebuild its ruins, And I will set it up;17 So that the rest of mankind may seek the LORD, Even all the Gentiles who are called by My name, Says the LORD who does all these things.’18 "Known to God from eternity are all His works.

THE EPHESIANS SAVED BY GRACE THROUGH FAITH?

HOW WERE:

TRUTH → CONSISTENT

The Certainty Of This Teaching

“For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast” (Eph. 2:8, 9)• SALVATION is by grace through faith

– Grace requires “faith” in order to save• “through the grace of our Lord” (Acts 15:11)• “hear the word of the gospel and believe” (Acts 15:7)

The Certainty Of This Teaching

“For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast” (Eph. 2:8, 9)• SALVATION is “not of yourselves”

– Salvation is “the gift of God”• Opposed to boastful “works” or merit

• SALVATION is “not of works”– Context: law of Moses (Eph. 2:11-16)

GRACE

GRACE• Sacrifice of Jesus,

shedding of blood, pass over sin (Rom. 3:24, 25)

• Revelation of Scripture (Ti. 2:11, 12; Gal. 1:6-9)

FAITH• The gospel system—the

word of the Lord (Acts 8:25; Gal. 1:23, 8, 9, 11)

• Man’s obedient response to God’s word (Heb. 11:7, 8)

Four Inescapable Conclusions:

i. A Jew is saved the same way as a Gentileii. The “grace of our Lord” saved the Gentiles

when they heard and believed the gospeliii. The Gentiles believed when they obeyed in

baptismiv. Baptism is a step of faith by which the grace

of our Lord takes people out of the world and places them into His name/kingdom

Colossian Confirmation

THE COLOSSIANS

(C)

ColossiansConveyed into the kingdom of Christ (1:13)WHEN?When they were forgiven in Christ (1:14)WHEN?When they put off the old man/deeds (3:9; 2:11)WHEN?When they were buried and raised in baptism (2:12)

+ Dead to trespasses (2:13)+ Alive with Christ (2:13)꞊ Forgiven all trespasses (2:13)

Review of Saving Grace

• Jesus died and rose again (Lk. 24:46)• Jesus commissioned his apostles what to preach (Matt.

28:18-20; Mk. 16:16; Lk. 24:46-49)• The Holy Spirit guided these to men speak accurately the

rules regarding salvation through the name of Jesus (Jn. 16:13; Acts 1:8)

• Peter preached what Jesus commissioned him to speak to Jews and Gentiles (Acts 10:6)

• Jesus, through Peter, commanded Cornelius’s household to be baptized (Acts 10:42, 43, 48)

• Paul preached the same gospel to the Ephesians and elsewhere (Acts 19:5, 6; Eph. 4:5)

Questions• Are you seeking the Lord?• Are you “called” by the name of the Lord

(Acts 15:17)?• Will you call on the name of the Lord

today?–“‘And now why are you waiting? Arise and

be baptized, and wash away your sins, calling on the name of the Lord’” (Acts 22:16)

Will You Be Saved By Grace Through Faith Now?

THE TRUTHConcerning Salvation By Grace Through Faith

“buried with Him in baptism, in which you also were raised with Him through faith in the working of God, who raised Him from the dead. And you, being dead in your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh, He has made alive together with Him, having forgiven you all trespasses” (Col. 2:12, 13)
