From the Pastor Really? July is over? What happened to my plans to get a ton of stuff done this summer? Prob-ably what happens every spring: I think things are going to slow down in the summer and I’ll get to
work on the projects I have to set aside during the rest of the year. When will I learn that will never happen?
Enough whining! It was a good, busy so far this summer! Four days of Vacation Bible school was a lot of fun. Thank you to Mar-lene and Robyn Levine, Sheila Schossow, Heidi Sea, and Jane Olivier for your help with this ministry. (Check out our Facebook page—Augustana Lutheran, Sioux City—for pictures and video.)
Taking five God’s Little Sprouts (and five parents) to Lutheran Lakeside Camp on July 13 was a great way to introduce the camp to the kids and parents. They had a great time, especially on the pontoon ride after lunch! We’re planning to go again next year.
After taking one confirmation student to Lutheran Lakeside Camp in June, I got to take five confirmation students on July 19. It was wonderful being at camp three times this summer!. Taking stu-dents to camp is only part of the fun; getting to see pastors from all over Iowa is another plus. 80° weather with low humidity is definite-ly part of a perfect picture as well. Augustana was also represented by two summer staff members and a volunteer.
Be watching for the September newsletter for reminders of our program-year schedule.
Have a blessed rest of the summer.

Art Splash and C.R.O.P. Walk Do you love art? Do you love the C.R.O.P. Walk? Then keep reading, because we have a unique opportunity that you could be a part of!
As many of you are aware, over the last several years Augustana has become quite involved with the annual C.R.O.P. Walk . Many of you have either donated to the cause or been a walker!
This year the Sioux City C.R.O.P. Walk or-ganization is hosting one of the Children's Ar-ea Activity Booths at the Sioux City Art Cen-ter's annual ArtSplash and we are looking for volunteers to help run the table and assist the children with their art project. The money raised during the event will go partially to the Art Center and the rest will go to C.R.O.P.!
Have questions? Here are a few answers...
1.“When and where is ArtSplash?” ArtSplash is held on Labor Day weekend (Saturday, September 5th and Sunday, September 6th) at Riverside Park in Sioux City.
2.“Will I be out in the sun the whole time?” No, we will be under a tent.
3.“I'm not artistic, I don't think I would be very good at this.” FALSE!! If you worry you aren’t artistic...no worries! The project is simple to do and all you have to do is help give the kids the supplies they’ll need to make it and watch their creativity take shape!
4.“How long will each shift be?” That is de-pendent on you! The hours of ArtSplash are Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. We would love to have you help us for anywhere from one hour to the whole day on either or both of these days!
5.“This sounds fun! How can I sign up for a shift?” If you are interested in helping or have a few more questions contact Shel-ley Hexom at [email protected] or call (712) 239-7156.
Again, we can use as much help as we can get. The Art Center estimates we will have about 300 kids participate over the two day event and they suggest having 3 to 4 people at our table at all times. Thank you in advance for your helping to spread the word about C.R.O.P.!

Christian Education Mission Team Christian Education at Augustana is in many varied forms. Shelley Hexom is the Christian Education Mission Team Chair.
For our 3-year-olds to our most mature members, education is offered every Sunday morning during the school year. The children are also pro-vided learning through music on Sunday mornings.
Instruction for Holy Communion offers a wonderful growth experience for children. A child may ask a parent to participate in this meal, and if the parents agree, they meet with Pastor for instruction. More formal information is offered in 3rd grade and, if a child hasn’t already communed, they will have First Communion on Maundy Thursday.
"Faith Stepping Stones" is a program that represents special times in the lives of our children as they grow in their Christian faith. The Stepping Stones include: Baptism, Entry into Sunday School, First Bible presentation, First Communion, Entering Confirmation, Confirmation, Entering High School, and High School Graduation.
In the summer, the children have an opportunity for learning more about Bible stories at our Vaca-tion Bible School.
Lutheran Lakeside Camp has different camps that are offered to children and youth during the sum-mer. New last year was a Robotics camp featuring Legos and computers. Also new last year was a special day camp for 3, 4, and 5 year-olds called “God’s Little Sprouts.” Five of our children, a parent from each family, and Pastor attended one morning of that camp this year. We are already planning to attend again next year. Two of our high school youth were camp counselors this year and one youth attended camp as a staff volunteer.
Throughout the year both middle school and high school youth meet for various activities. These could be either a servant activity or a recreational activity. These events offer another medium for Christian growth.
Adults also have several educational opportunities. During the school year, Pastor presents a class on Sunday morning at 9 AM. Topics vary from different religions to books of the Bible to exploration of the church seasons. Choir provides an opportunity for learning through music at 9:15 each Sunday morning.
All women in the church are invited to monthly Bible study on the first Wednesday of each month at 10 AM or the first Thursday at 7 PM. This summer Pastor has done a study in July, and he will do an-other one on August 5 at 10 AM.
Being an Assisting Minister offers an additional learning experience. This opportunity is open to any confirmed member of the congregation. At the present time we have several youth who participate in this role either on Sundays or during the midweek Lenten services.
Christian Education abounds at Augustana! The Christian Education Mission Team would challenge every member—no matter how old—to participate in one of the many faith formation opportunities.
