Busy Spring For duet by Mr. Cramer and Christina Mozumdar. Mr. Cramer then came out for an encore with a fantastic performance accompanied by Ms. Lenaghan and Mr. Tubera. The show continued with a trip to the Hong Kong Karaoke House with a famous producer, where students watched performances by Tiffany Dannan, Melissa Bannan and Yoo Lee, and then witnessed a dance competition that featured the Asian Interest Club, the Morphers and the SDA

Dance Team. As the show came to a close, students and faculty ran back out on stage and danced to Cotton-EyedJoeforonefinaldancenumber.Thedaywasfilledwithmuch fun, and celebrated SDA’s cultural diversity. For students, the show was also a way to learn something new about different nationalities. Congratulations on a job well done to all of the performers.

This spring, the Saint Dominic Academy Glee Club was proud to compete in its 32nd annual choir competition. Over Easter Break, the entire Glee Club and Dominoes ventured down to Virginia Beach to participate in the exciting event.

As expected, the young ladies were a smashing success. The group collectively won superior recognition in all categories and the Glee Club won superior over all other schools participating in the event.

After much practice, hard work and dedication, the girls were very proud that their hard work paid off under the tutelage of advisor Mr. Napoli. To end the successful trip, the girls got to go to Busch Gardens to enjoy a nice sunny day full of rides and entertainment. Tofinishtheyearoff, theSDA Glee Club had its annual Spring Concert on Sunday, April, 29th at Saint Aloysius Church. During the concert, the Glee Club performed a number of fun and up-beat pieces, including a medley from the famous Broadway show RENT.

In some ways though, the concert was bittersweet as the

younger members said goodbye to their older senior sisters and the seniors realized that this would be their last year on the stage at St. Al’s singing under Mr. Napoli’s crazy conducting. A few select members are also going to be singing at Carnegie Hall in New York City on

May 26th. SDA is quite honored to be invited back yet again to the celebrated concert hall. Two seniors, Ashley Hector and Tiffany Danan, will be preforming at Carnegie Hall for the 4th time this May. Overall, the SDA Glee Club works hard all year for a reason. All of these successful concerts and invitations to such prestigious events and venues make the hard work and long hours of rehearsal worth it.

Drama Club plays, Link Crew, Hospitality Club, Multicultural Club, and I want to be involved in Glee Club next year.

Was it fun writing your speech?Chanelle: Yes, it was. It came from the heart, so it was very fun to write.

Do you think this role will prepare you for the future? Jessamyn:Yes,Idefinitelythinkit will help me prepare for the future, considering I will have to work with administration (Jessamyn aspires to be a doctor), but also prepare me to deal with my fellow classmates. I’ll have to compromise and make tough decisions and hopefully it will be for the better.

Would you like to say anything to the student body?Jessamyn: Hey! *laughs* I hope

we can create one of the best years you’ll ever have here at Dom’s. I love you ladies!

Is there anything that you would like to accomplish in the upcoming school year?Sarah: I just want it to be a super memorable year. I want it to be different; I want it to be fun. I want to improve upon everything that is already here and make new traditions for Dom’s.

Jacqueline: Yeah! Add to your happiness, subtract worries, and make your year as brilliant as it can possibly be! This, ladies of SDA, is your new student council. If their preparation

prior to winning the election is any indication of their leadership qualities, the student body is undoubtedly in good hands. Congratulations and best wishes next year ladies!

their teachers.” Overall though, each of the students really seemed to enjoy the experience. During the day, the students toured NYC and even had a chance to do some shopping at Newport Mall. In New York, they went to the Met, the Empire State Building, Times Square, the Statue of Liberty, and many other attractions. At night, the exchange students stayed at the homes of their hostesses, where they had the opportunity to eat American food and see what it was like to live in an American home. The favorite food of many exchange students was pizza. Over the weekend, the SDA hostesses brought their students to the Bronx Zoo, Hoboken, NYC, and the Jersey Shore. SDA students studying French were also able to

develop a better understanding of the French culture and language by getting to know their exchange students on a more personal level. The ten days ended on a happy note, with all the students going to a French restaurant in Jersey City, Madame Claude’s, for a farewell party. While saying goodbye wasdifficult, andfilledwithmany tears and last minute photo opportunities, the friendships made are sure to last a lifetime.

A brief introduction to each of the four pillars – Scholarship, Service, Leadership and Character – which act as the foundation for this prestigious society, was given by the executive members of the NHS. This was followed by the lighting of candles symbolizing each of these four traits.

An inspirational speech delivered by Mr. Corbo, led up to the main event of the program, the presentation of the pins. The inductees were introduced by NHS Advisor, Mrs. Criaris, and were

to receive the pin from their parents and sign their names as an officialmemberof the National Honor Society.

The closing remarks were made by Head of School, Mrs.Griffin, anda much deserved

vote of thanks was given to all members of the faculty panel for selecting the students.

As was evident from the smiles and the buzz of lighthearted conversation, the evening was a great success and every student left satisfied, alongwiththeirpins, anda promise to live up to this honor next year as well. A special thank you goes out to Mrs. Criaris for making this event so special.

Below is a list of newly inducted members:

This year the World Language Department was pleased to welcome Chinese as its newest addition to the Honor Scoiety family, joining both French and Spanish. The Language Honor Society allows qualifying members of the Junior and Senior classes to take part. On May 8th, many excited students, along with their family members and teachers, gathered in ELAN for this prestigious honor. Mrs.Griffinwelcomedeveryone and passed the microphone to Senora Jimenez who announced the Spanish scholars. Mademoiselle Ivey and Madame Costanzo introduced the French scholars, and were even joined by Madame Scholz who

made a special guest appearance. Ms. Li concluded the induction portion of the evening by announcing the four new members of the Chinese Honor Society.

The ceremony included the lighting of the symbolic candles and the presentation of pins. It was clear that the audience was filledwithproud parents

and teachers of these language scholars as ELAN erupted in applause at the conclusion of the ceremony.

The evening concluded with wonderful refreshments and proud students showing off their certificates.Congratulationstothe newly inducted members in Chinese, French, and Spanish.

The annual Sophomore Sock Hop is a night that the young women of Saint Dominic Academy can dress up and invite their dates to have a good time with friends. This year’s exciting theme, decided on by the students themselves, was Casino Night. ELAN definitelydidn’t look like the normal room that hosts assemblies and open houses. By the time early evening came around, the room was full of glitter and money signs, a tribute to the hard work of the decoration committee. When the girls arrived, pictures were taken in Madonna Hall by the skilled photographer,

Mr. Roy Cramer. All of the girls and their dates looked amazing. Up in ELAN, the music was blaring and the dancing began. There was socializing, picture taking, eating and of course,

dancing. The night was fun and full of laughs and memories that the Sophomore class will cherish forever. The Sophomore Sock Hop was a night the Class of 2014 should be very

proud of due to the tremendous success of the event. Next to the Junior Ring Dance next year and then Senior Prom, this certainly will go down as one of the big social events in their high school career.

Career Day at SDABy: Catherine Policastro ‘12 On March 23rd, the students of Saint Dominic Academy had a chance to learn about several different career opportunities at SDA’s annual Career Day event. Juniors, Sophomores and Freshmen signed up for three different choices in the days leading up to the event. The student body was lucky enough to have several SDA graduates return on this day to share information about their current careers. Alyssa Pierce ’09, a published author, hosted a session on writing and working towards getting that work published. Jessica Iorio ’02 spoke to the students about business, specificallyintheroleoffinancialanalyst, and Danielle Candelario ’03 discussed the many different hats worn by a pharmacist. Several other exciting career sessions included clinical psychology, culinary arts, education, fashion and modeling,

accounting and the entertainment world. Students listened as each professional explained his or her day to day role in that particular career. Students were encouraged to ask questions and many took advantage of this opportunity to learn about possible career choices and college majors. A particularly touching

presentation was the Make-A-Wish Foundation. Ms. Lindsey Pritzlaff, whose mother graduated from Saint Dominic Academy, played a heartfelt DVD showing just

what happens at the Foundation’s brand new Castle (where the wishes are made reality) right here in New Jersey. The students were enthusiastic throughout the sessions as they started to wrap their heads around the idea of eventually moving onto college and then a career. It was a day well spent by all and could not have taken place without the guidance of Mrs. McCaig and Mrs. Roc.

Spring is a very important time for some of the girls at Saint Dominic Academy. Flowers are bloomingandsoftballsareflyingthrough the air. The SDA softball team had its ups and downs early this season, but the young ladies stuck together through hard times and celebrated the good times.

They had unseasonably nice weather for all of their pre-season and most of the early season. Towards the end of April, however, thefloodgatesopened and rain outs had to be rescheduled. In the beginning of the season, the SDA softball team took a trip down to Disney World in Florida. With beautiful weather, the girls came back with a few victories and a couple of sunburns.

The team improved on its existing abilities and added new skills. In addition to learning more about the game, the team bonded

and grew closer together. The girls traveled to various parks and even had a team BBQ with players, coaches and parents.

This season, the Blue Devils successfully beat rival Holy

Family twice, dominated Ferris in the firstcountygame of the season, and soundly defeated Lacordaire Academy in an out of county

game. In the Hudson County

Tournament, they played a great game against Secaucus, even though they were not able to advance to the second round.

The team would like to thank coaches Jim Murduca and Modesta Rivera for never giving up on them. They would also like to send their sincerest farewells to the seniors: Alissa Laurie, Jaimee Laurie, Naiya Patel, Amanda Rivera and Kate Zubicki. Thanks for a great season Seniors!

By: Briana Encarnacion ‘14 The SDA Outdoor Track team has had a remarkable season. They have attended a total of ten meets and still have another ten left to go. With the help of their coaches, the young ladies on the team have worked extremely hard to get where they are today. They are a family who work with one another to strive for success.

Recently, several of the team members were invited to the University of Pennsylvania to compete in the Penn Relays. This is a world-wide event that only the best schools attend, and SDA was one of them. The relay teams thattheteamqualifiedforwerethe4X100, the 4X400, and 4X800.

In particular, the 4X400 relay team gave an outstanding performance. Composed of freshman Hannah Johnson, and seniors Cecilia Sabbers, Sarah Sisk, and Leandra Boney (all

picturedbelow),theteamfinishedsecond with a time of 4:10.70, and it became a day they would never forget.

Upon their return, the girls quickly prepared for the 2012 Jersey City Meet, and, once again SDA came out victorious. Although it may seem like the season is over, it really is not close to completion. The county meet is quickly approaching and soon after, it will be time for Nationals.

The SDA track team has proved to be a phenomenal team. As the year comes to an end, the underclass members of the team wish to say goodbye to seniors Leandra Boney, Stella Gomez, Julie Lipyanka, Megan Sisk, Sarah Sisk, Zha’Mari Hurley, and Cecilia Sabbers. These girls were a great asset to the team and they will be sincerely missed.
