President’s Message

It is my honor to serve as the President of the Board of Directors of the Community Foundation of Grant County for � scal year 2012-13. As a lifetime resident of Grant County, I have deep roots in this community, and I sincerely want to see the community continue to grow and prosper.

Please take a few minutes to review our 2011-12 Annual Report. It’s chock full of examples of donor generosity and community impact. You will quickly discover how the Community Foundation has changed the lives of many students, multiple charitable organizations, and the Grant County community as a whole.

As we embark upon our 28th year building the community’s endowment, I would challenge each one of you reading this report to become a part of the Community Foundation’s mission of ‘building a better quality of life. You can start by volunteering to help with community projects, placing the Foundation in your estate plan, donating to one of our 300 funds, or by seriously considering establishing your own endowed fund to bene� t the cause in which you are most passionate. No matter how you choose to get involved, we wish to express ‘Many Words of � anks’ to you in advance. � is multiplied generosity adds up to make tremendous impact, now and in the future.

EDUCATIONProject Leadership was established in 2000 when Lilly Endowment generously funded a program called CAPE, Community Alliances to Promote Education. In 2007, with funding from local partners who believed in the program, Project Leadership tightened its education-based mission and began recruiting eligible students to become Twenty-� rst Century Scholars. A mentoring program was launched later that year and the program became a great success.

Originally housed at Indiana Wesleyan University, the Project Leadership program moved to the Community Foundation building in 2005. By 2011, the program was ready to become a stand-alone organization, and with the help of a $10,000 grant from the Foundation, they moved into their new facility at 118 West 25th Street in Marion.

Other grants in the Education category were:• Barton Rees Pogue Memorial Library:

$3,145 for micro� lm, an external hard drive, and � ash drives

• City of Marion: $11,400 for the Village Park Project

• Grant County Economic Growth Council: $4,500 to be used for scholarships for the winning team in the Young Entrepreneurs’ Program

COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT� e Hostess House is a historically signi� cant structure, not only to the people of Grant County, but to the state of Indiana. It captures the beauty and elegance of the early 1900s and remains one of Grant County’s treasures. � is gracious house was built during the early part of the 20th century and was the site of many cocktail parties, dinners, and a� ernoon teas for invited guests. A� er being abandoned and vandalized in the 1940s, a group of Marion women started a community-wide e� ort to revitalize the structure. � ey named it the Hostess House - a place they could use to entertain outside their homes. � e Wilson-Vaughan Hostess House is a place for people to enjoy lunch, attend weddings, cultural events, and other social gatherings. But more importantly, it is a vital part of Grant County’s history.

� e Hostess House received a $9,500 grant from the Foundation for landscaping, outside lighting, and a new sign to increase its visibility to the community and visitors.

Other grants in the Community Development category were:

• Humane Society: $6,600 for outdoor kennels

• Christmas City Chorus: $3,550 for new risers

HEALTHCancer Services of Grant County is a community-based organization that has been serving Grant County for more than 50 years. � ey provide a county-wide educational outreach on early detection and cancer prevention, as well as free services to those facing cancer including transportation, supplies, medication, and support groups.

� e Foundation was able to help Cancer Services purchase a new computer system by awarding them a $3,320 grant.

Other grants in the Health category were:• American Diabetes Association: $930

for “camperships” for Grant County students to attend Camp Warvel

• Mad Anthonys Children’s Hope House: $5,795 to support Grant County families staying at Children’s Hope House

• Marion Community Gardens Association: $6,033 for an irrigation system

• Minority Health Coalition: $2,479 for new computer systems, a scanner, and so� ware

MEETING COMMUNITY NEEDS� e Community Foundation’s Distribution Committee meets four times each year to award grants in four � elds of interest: education, community development, health, and human services. � is year 27 organizations in Grant County received more than $146,000 in grants to meet many community needs.

HUMAN SERVICESSt. Martin de Porres Community Center began in 1967 with an anonymous donation of $50 to feed transitional workers. Over the years, the organization has grown into a community-wide service provider of food and clothing to those in need. � e core mission of the organization is to feed those a� ected by poverty. In May of 2011, the Community Foundation helped the Center meet its mission with a $10,000 grant to purchase food.

Other grants in the Human Services category were:

• Affordable Housing Corporation: $4,920 for scholarships for fees for homeownership counseling

• CASA of Grant County: $7,000 for a new sign

• Family Service Society: $6,000 for Ripple E� ects so� ware licenses and training

• Family Service Society – Prevent Child Abuse: $2,345 for the Lifesaver Campaign

• Gilead Ministries: $3,716 to upgrade conference room and computers

• Grant County Special Olympics: $1,894.71 for laptops, printers, scanners, and a modem

• Habitat for Humanity: $10,000 to replace the roof on the warehouse for the “Restore”

• JobSource: $1,000 for the Family Development Program

• Jonesboro Fire Department: $8,300 for supply line, adapters, and a RIT kit

• Marion Police Department: $1,500 for the Cell Phone Sally Program

• Mill Township Volunteer Fire Department: $5,000 for a thermal imaging camera

• Pleasant Township Volunteer Fire Department: $1,745 for � re hose, Storz � ttings, and adapter

• Marion Grant County Senior Center: $12,000 for a new roof

• The SwitchUp: $4,000 for computers, hardware, and so� ware for homework help

• Family Service Society – Hands of Hope: $11,550 to support the Flannery Keal Home

• YMCA: $2,117.72 proactive grant to repair the organization’s bus

On April 5, 2012, eleven of Grant County’s outstanding graduating seniors were honored with the Community Foundation’s Academic Excellence Award.

MIRANDA FUCHS from Marion High School and LANORA OSBORNE from Mississinewa High School each received the prestigious Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship. Now known as “Lilly Scholars”, they will receive full tuition for four years to the Indiana college of their choice, plus a $900 stipend for required books and equipment.

Miranda Fuchs, daughter of Stephen Fuchs and Tamela Holt, ranks second in her class with a 4.0 GPA and plans to study visual communications at Indiana Wesleyan University. Lanora Osborne, daughter of Michael and Linda Osborne ranks � rst in her class with a 3.90 GPA.

She plans to study pharmacy at Butler University.

Other Lilly � nalists included Eastbrook’s CHRIS PAK, King’s Academy’s REBEKAH

MINER, Madison-Grant’s LYNDSAY

CHRISTENSEN, and Oak Hill’s KENDALL

DROOK. Each of these students received a $1,500 scholarship from the Academic Excellence Fund held within the Foundation.

Each year, Grant County accredited high schools are asked to nominate one representative for the Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship Award. � e representatives must be Grant County residents and have a minimum 3.5 grade point average. Selection criteria also includes scholastic achievement, attitude, character, desire, and school and community involvement.

A� er the Community Foundation’s scholarship selection committee narrows the � eld of representatives to two nominees and one alternate, the � nalists’ names are submitted to Independent Colleges of Indiana, Inc. (ICI) for selection of the recipients.

ICI is a nonpro� t corporation that represents 31 regionally accredited, degree-granting, nonpro� t independent colleges and universities in the state.

In addition, � ve $1,000 Academic Excellence Scholarships were awarded to LACY HAMILTON and ANGEL DOWNAM from Madison-Grant High School, AMY

CONRAD from Marion High School, ALISON AVERY from Mississinewa High School, and ALISSA COMBS from Oak Hill High School.
