The Trinity II: The Son and the Holy Spirit

Ephesians 2:4-5 “But God, being rich in mercy, because of the

great love with which he loved us, even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ—by grace you have been saved.”

“Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.”

Philippians 2:5-8

What does it mean that he “emptied” himself?

• Greek: – Κενόω (pronounced Ken-ah-oh)

• Definition: – to completely remove or eliminate elements of

high status or rank by eliminating all privileges or prerogatives associated with such status or rank.

“For we do not have a high who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin.”

Hebrews 4:15

“Surely he has borne our griefs and carried our sorrows; But he was pierced for our transgressions; he was crushed for our iniquities; upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace.”

Isaiah 53:4-5

He Emptied Himself Physically“And the Word became flesh and dwelt among

us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth. “

John 1:14

“...he had no form or majesty that we should look at him, and no beauty that we should desire him.”

He Emptied Himself Mentally

“And Jesus increased in wisdom and in stature and in favor with God and man.”

Luke 2:52

He Emptied Himself Relationally“For we do not have a high priest who is unable

to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin. Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.”

Hebrews 4:15-16

The Holy Spirit

John 14:15-2515 “If you love me, you will keep my

commandments. 16 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, to be with you forever, 17 even the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, for he dwells with you and will be in you.

18 “I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you. 19 Yet a little while and the world will see me no more, but you will see me. Because I live, you also will live. 20 In that day you will know that I am in my Father, and you in me, and I in you. 21 Whoever has my commandments and keeps them, he it is who loves me. And he who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I will love him and manifest myself to him.”

22 Judas (not Iscariot) said to him, “Lord, how is it that you will manifest yourself to us, and not to the world?” 23 Jesus answered him, “If anyone loves me, he will keep my word, and my Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him. 24 Whoever does not love me does not keep my words. And the word that you hear is not mine but the Father’s who sent me.

25 “These things I have spoken to you while I am still with you. 26 But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you.

Who Is the Holy Spirit?The Holy Spirit is the third person of the Trinity

that indwells followers of Jesus and is the presence and the power of God in their lives.

• John 14:15-16 “If you love me, you will keep my commandments. And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, to be with you forever...”

• In the Greek: παράκλητος– This is where the English word “Paraclete” comes

from, meaning “Advocate” or “Helper”.

• John 14: The Father sends the Spirit• John 16: The Son sends the Spirit.

What does he, the Holy Spirit, do?• The Holy Spirit points people to Jesus.• John 14:26: ...he will teach you all things and

bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you.

• John 15:26: He will bear witness about me...• John 16:10: He will convict the world

concerning righteousness because I go to the Father and you will see me no longer.

What does the Holy Spirit want us to do?• John 14:15-17: “If you love me, you will keep my

commandments. And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, to be with you forever, even the Spirit of truth...

• John 14: 23-24: Jesus answered him, “If anyone loves me, he will keep my word, and my Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him. Whoever does not love me does not keep my words. And the word that you hear is not mine but the Father’s who sent me.

When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth.

1. Meditate on what needs to be changed in your life.

2. Get in the word3. Kill sin.

“Be killing sin, or sin will be killing you”

4. Ask God for His Presence (Pray).5. Practice the Presence of God.
