MATHIAS HOUX - MARYLAND PATRIOTMathias Houx, ancestor of Glenn Greenfield

and Patriot from Maryland, was born in Frederickstown, Maryland, on March 10, 1759. He enlisted July 19, 1776, as a Private in Captain Henry Hardman's Company, 1st Maryland Battalion of the Flying Camp. His unit was primarily from Frederick County, Maryland.

He was in the Battle for Long Island in August 1776, and the Battle of White Plains in October 1776.

The 1st Batallion was at Fort Washington when Washington's army was defeated on November 16, 1776. Captain Hardman was captured and not exchanged until June 1778.

Most of the men of the Maryland Flying Camp were captured; although, a few escaped across the river. There are no Muster Rolls for the unit, so the status of Mathias Houx is unknown. It is likely that he was captured with the majority of the men in his unit.

He returned to action at the Battle of Germantown on October 4, 1777, the Battle of Camden on August 16, 1780, the Battle of Guilford Courthouse on March 15, 1781, and the Battle of Hobkirk’s Hill on April 25, 1781.

His time of service apparently ended sometime in mid-1781, and he returned home to marry Susannah Morganstern on September 20, 1781.

He left Maryland around 1795 for the wilderness of Kentucky, settling in Logan and Todd Counties. Around 1817 he departed Kentucky to settle in Missouri. He died there on October 28, 1831. He is buried there beside his wife in the Mount Vernon Cemetery in the community of Pilot Grove, Cooper County.

Unfortunately, though his wife’s tombstone is intact, his tombstone has been broken and lost. Only a stone stump remains (see photo below).

We have begun the process of applying for a replacement stone from the Veteran’s Administration, and will co-host a grave marking ceremony in cooperation with the M. Graham Clark Chapter in Columbia, Missouri, later this year.

Patriot’s Day Celebration 2014!Though is it celebrated with enthusiasm every year in

the Northeast United States, particularly in Massachusetts, very few of us here in the South are familiar with this patriotic holiday.

Patriot’s Day is a remembrance and celebration of the very first battles of the Revolution, Lexington and Bunker Hill, on April 19, 1775.

Observances and re-enactments of these first battles of the American Revolution occur annually at Lexington Green in Lexington, Massachusetts and The Old North Bridge in Concord. In the morning, mounted re-enactors with state police escorts retrace the rides of Paul Revere and William Dawes, calling out warnings the whole way.

Though we will not be hosting and re-enactments of Lexington and Concord, we will be celebrating our own special Patriot’s Day.

On Saturday, April 19, the 239th anniversary of those first shots of the Revolution, we will be marking the grave of our very first Patriot in Trigg County! We will honor Miles Hollowell, soldier from North Carolina.

Hopefully, we can celebrate Patriot’s Day every year with the special recognition of one of our very own local Patriots.

THREE NEW PROSPECTIVE COMPATRIOTS IN PROCESS AS OF APRIL 1!

Kevin Stroud has worked as a

barber for twenty-five years in Cadiz.  He is now semi-retired.  He is also a former Magistrate and Justice of the Peace in Trigg County, where he has lived his entire life.

Like several of our other “native” Trigg County Compatriots, he is descended from Patriot James Thomas, and is a member of the Thomas-Bridges Association.  Document discovery and the application preparation process should take a couple of weeks.  We hope that Mr. Stroud’s application will be approved some time in May.

Dylan is a 2011 graduate of Trigg County High School.    He is currently employed in patient registration at Trigg County Hospital and is seeking entrance into a program to earn a nursing degree.  He also works as an on-air personality at WKDZ Radio in Cadiz.

Dylan is descended from Joel Cohoon, who served in Capt. Wilson’s Company of Hart’s North Carolina Regiment.  Cohoon is buried in Trigg County in the Griff Calhoun Cemetery, on a bluff overlooking Lake Barkley, on North Lakeshore Drive.

Joshua is sixteen years old, and a sophomore at Trigg County High School.  He will be our chapter’s very first “Junior Member.”    Joshua’s 6th great-grandfather was Henry Chaffee of Connecticut.  In April of 1775 he answered the “Lexington Alarm” with the other militiamen of the area in response to the British moving on Lexington and Concord, Massachusetts.  He marched to the relief of Boston, serving five days.  He later served with the same militia company from May until October 1775, and in another company in 1776.
