Are you equipped to deal
with these odds?
LGB youth are four times more likely,
and questioning youth are 3 times more
likely, to attempt suicide as their straight
peers (2011 CDC)
LGB youth who come from highly
rejecting families are up to 8 times as
likely to have attempted suicide than LGB
peers who reported no or low levels of
family rejection (2009, Family
Acceptance Project.)
Nearly half of young transgender people
have seriously thought about taking their
lives and one quarter report having made
a suicide attempt (2007, The AmericanAssociation of Suicidology.)
Suicide is the third leading cause of death
among young people ages 15 to 24 and
accounts for 12.2% of the deaths every
year in that age group (2010 CDC).
13.8% of students in grades 9-12
seriously considered suicide in the
previous 12 months (2009 CDC).
Hispanic and Black, non-Hispanic female
high school students in grades 9-12
reported a much higher percentage of
suicide attempts than their White, non-
Hispanic counterparts (2009 CDC). Youth who are threatened with physical
violence by their peers were 2.4 times
more likely to report suicidal thoughts
and 3.3 times more likely to reportsuicidal behavior than non-victimized
youth (2009, Journal of Pediatrics.)

If you answer “yes” to any of the following questions, this workshop is for you.
Are you committed to finding solutions to help in the prevention
of suicide amongst all of our young people?
Would you like to learn more about how you can help? Would you like to be prepared to help the young people who are
at the exceedingly highest danger, and risk, of suicide?
Do you feel that having more insight, knowledge, and resources
is always a good thing in the fight against suicide?
Trevor Project and the Lifeguard Workshop
The Trevor Project is the leading
national organization providing
crisis intervention and suicideprevention services to lesbian, gay,
bisexual, transgender and
questioning (LGBTQ) youth. Their
mission is to end suicide among
LGBTQ youth by providing life-
saving and life-affirming resources
including their nationwide, 24/7
crisis intervention lifeline, digital
community and
advocacy/educational programs thatcreate a safe, supportive and
positive environment for everyone.
Great empathy, compassion and
dedication can always be found in
the community of folks working to
prevent teen suicide. While those are
the fundamental forces at work for
all youth advocates, it also requires
training, education, and resources in
order to save lives.
This workshop will provide that
training, education, and the
connection to resources, to improve
your beneficial impact in the fight
against suicide.
Along with the information to help
any and all teens struggling with
thoughts of suicide, you will be
provided crucial information to help
those who are at the most risk,
LGBTQ youth.
The Trevor Project’s Lifeguard
Workshop Program uses a
structured, age-appropriate
curriculum with trained
facilitators to address topics
including:
• Examining the impact of language and actions on the
experiences and mental health of
young LGBTQ people;
• Recognizing the warning signsof depression and suicide among
young people and their peers;
• Responding to those warning
signs in a way that keeps all
young people safe.
