THE TREASURY OF DAILY PRAYER Have you the desire for a richer and deeper life of quiet time and prayer? If so, you might want to consider the newly released publication from Concordia Publishing House entitled Treasury of Daily Prayer. I have found the book easy to follow and use every day. It is put together in such a manner that you might spend as much time or as little time as each day allows. For each day, the “Treasury” gives brief, but substantive readings from the Psalms, the Old Testament, and the New Testament. Then comes a “Writing” from a church father–who may be any one from Chrysostom to Luther or more recent divines–usually commenting on one of the texts. Then comes a hymn verse followed by the col- lect for the day (that is, a historic prayer). Each day’s readings are only a few pages, which means that I don’t get bogged down and later abandon the project for lack of time. The Bible readings are not full chapters, but they are meaningful chunks of Scripture. Nevertheless, in the course of a year, you would read the entire New Testament and one-third of the Old Testament. Reading the Psalms, the Old Testament, and the New Testament in this way dramatizes powerfully and devotionally how the Word of God is self-inter- preting and how Christ is everywhere in the Bible. The “Writings” remind me how I am part of a rich heritage that extends back through time and that the Gospel does not just derive from the Reformation, but is pres- ent also in medieval and ancient Christianity. Another advantage is that I know other members who are also using it, and I know we are reading and praying the same things, a wonderful manifestation of the communion of the saints. The result of all of this is a rich daily devotion. The “Treasury” also includes other devotional resources, from model prayers for various occasions, to orders of worship for individuals, families, or small groups. You can even pray the “offices,” those four, five or six- a-day meditations that the monks did, though you will follow a more evangelical or gospel centered prayer life. I bring this up now because The Treasury of Daily Prayer is now on sale! During the month of May, you can get it half-price! Concordia’s toll-free number is: 1-800-325-3040. The special pricing is: Regular edition, $49.99, now $24.99. Deluxe edition, $79.99, is now $39.99. Concordia Publishing House is offering special pricing throughout the month of May on the “Treasury of Daily Prayer”. I can’t think of a better way to celebrate the rest of Eastertide and the Pentecost festival, than by encouraging the members of Grace Congregation to embrace a richer, deeper life of prayer and meditation on the Word of God. In my opinion, there is no better single resource to aid and strengthen you in your prayer life, than the Treasury of Daily Prayer. THE TREASURY OF DAILY PRAYER

Have you the desire for a richer and deeper life of quiet time and prayer? If so, you might want to consider the newly released publication from Concordia PublishingHouse entitled Treasury of Daily Prayer.

I have found the book easy to follow and use every day. It is put together in such a manner that you might spend as much time or as little time as each day allows.

For each day, the “Treasury” gives brief, but substantive readings from the Psalms, the Old Testament, and the New Testament. Then comes a “Writing” from a churchfather–who may be any one from Chrysostom to Luther or more recent divines–usually commenting on one of the texts. Then comes a hymn verse followed by the col-lect for the day (that is, a historic prayer).

Each day’s readings are only a few pages, which means that I don’t get bogged down and later abandon the project for lack of time. The Bible readings are not fullchapters, but they are meaningful chunks of Scripture. Nevertheless, in the course of a year, you would read the entire New Testament and one-third of the OldTestament. Reading the Psalms, the Old Testament, and the New Testament in this way dramatizes powerfully and devotionally how the Word of God is self-inter-preting and how Christ is everywhere in the Bible. The “Writings” remind me how I am part of a rich heritage that extends back through time and that the Gospel does not just derive from the Reformation, but is pres-ent also in medieval and ancient Christianity. Anotheradvantage is that I know other members who are also using it, and I know we are reading and praying the same things, a wonderful manifestation of the

communion of the saints. The result of all of this is a rich daily devotion.

The “Treasury” also includes other devotional resources, from model prayers for various occasions, to orders of worship for individuals, families, or small groups. You can even pray the “offices,” those four, five or six-a-day meditations that the monks did, though you will follow a more evangelical or gospel centered prayer life.

I bring this up now because The Treasury of Daily Prayer is now on sale! During the month of May, you can get it half-price!

In my opinion, there is no better single resource to aid and strengthen you in yourprayer life, than the Treasury of Daily Prayer.

GRADE

Hi, my name is Lauren Bevilacqua and I am eleven years old. I live in San Carlos and have three siblings. I like to dance and sometimes play soccer. Last year my sister and I danced at half time for the Warrior’s game. My favorite sports teams are my brother’s football team (Serra Padres) and the Warriors. In my free time I like to play with my dog, watch TV, and read. My favorite food is ribs. I want to become a dance teacher because it would be a lot of fun. I might be going to Disneyland and San Diego. This year I am the royal photographer of the fan club in our school play. I’m glad I go to school here because I learn a lot about God. Thank you for supporting our school. Hi, my name is Anjanette Gomez. I live in San Mateo with my parents, grandma, and sister. In my spare time I like to read, watch TV and ride my bike. When I was younger I wanted to become a children’s nurse because I like being where kids are. Next year I am going to be on the Grace Eagle’s volleyball team. This year, the school play is called If the Shoe Fits. It is like Cinderella, except it has more bad people in it. I am playing Irene, who is president of the Prince’s fan club. What I like about Grace Lutheran is that I have great friends here and everyone cares about me just as I care about them. Thank you for supporting our school. Hi, my name is Briana Macklin. I live in San Francisco. I have three brothers and one sister. My hobbies are playing volleyball and drawing. My favorite team is the San Francisco 49ers. In my free time I like to play with my dog and watch TV. When I am older I want to help animals or be a nurse. I have many vacations plans with

my family. I want to go to Magic Mountain and Universal Studios. In the school play I have the part of Agnes who is shy but in the end saves the day. I’m glad I’m here because we learn about Jesus. Thank you for supporting our school. Hi, my name is Jose Sandoval. I live in Hayward and I have one brother. My hobbies are playing baseball and watching TV. My baseball team is the Giants. My favorite pro baseball teams are the SF Giants and the Oakland A’s. In my free time I usually go to the park or play video games. My vacation plans this summer are to go to Mexico to visit my family there. I am glad I go to Grace because it provides a good education and the classes are not so large. Thank you for supporting our school. Hi, my name is Tatiana Macklin. I have three brothers and one sister. My hobbies are playing with my dog, watching TV, and reading. I am not on any sports teams. My favorite team for soccer is the Mexico team. I have a lot of favorite foods, but I would say that pasta is my favorite. When I grow up, I want to be a veterinarian and help animals. In the summer I might go to Florida and go to a water park. I am glad I go to Grace Lutheran because it is a nice school and I have nice friends. Thank you for supporting our school.
