The Transfiguration of the Lord (Cycle A) A Sunday Reflection

We pray what we believe, we believe what we pray. We celebrate what we believe, and believe what we celebrate. The Feast of the Transfiguration is a great example of celebrating our faith. This Feast is celebrated twice in our liturgical calendar. The second Sunday of Lent, marks 40 days before Good Friday. In our Catholic tradition it has been handed on that the Transfiguration happened 40 days before Good Friday. The second date of celebration for this mystery is August 6, 40 days before the Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross. Do you see the connection? Jesus Christ was transfigured before the closed circle of His apostles, Peter, James and John. Jesus showed them His Divinity before the Cross and resurrection. May the Lord do the same with us! May He show us His love and power before we pass through our sufferings and crosses. Praised be Jesus Christ! God bless you!

La Transfiguración del Señor (Ciclo A) Reflexión Dominical

Oramos lo que creemos; creemos lo que oramos. Celebramos lo que creemos y creemos lo que celebramos. La fiesta de la Transfiguración es un gran ejemplo de cómo celebramos nuestra fe. Esta fiesta se celebra dos veces en el calendario litúrgico. El segundo domingo de Cuaresma, cuarenta días antes del Viernes Santo ya que la tradición que nos ha sido transmitida cuenta que la Transfiguración tuvo lugar cuarenta días antes de dicho día. La segunda celebración de este misterio es el 6 de agosto, cuarenta días antes de la fiesta de la Exaltación de la Santa Cruz. ¿Ven la conexión? Jesucristo es transfigurado ante el pequeño círculo de los apóstoles Pedro, Santiago y Juan. Jesús les muestra Su divinidad antes de la Cruz y la resurrección. ¡Roguémosle que haga lo mismo con nosotros! Que el Señor nos muestre Su amor y Su poder antes de que pasemos por la cruz y el sufrimiento. ¡Alabado sea Jesucristo! ¡Que Dios los bendiga!

Why Pray? Compelling Reasons to Pray

WHY PRAY? Because God commands it. Prayer is a response to a prior divine invitation. No, “invitation” is too weak. God commands us to pray, in fact to “pray constantly” (1 Thess 5:17)…. We pray to obey God, not to “play God”. We pray not to change God’s mind, but to change our own; not to command God, but to let God command us. We pray to “let God be God”. Prayer is our obedience to God, for God has commanded us to ask (Mt 7:7). Three reasons God commands us to pray correspond to our three deepest needs…: prayer gives truth to our mind, goodness to our will, and beauty to our heart. “The true, the good, and the beautiful” are the three things we need and love the most, because they are three attributes of God. Prayer gives truth to our mind because it puts us in the presence of Truth itself…. It gives goodness to our will because it puts us “on line” with God…. It gives beauty to our heart because it plunges us into the heart of God. (To be continued.)

¿Por qué orar? Razones convincentes para orar

¿POR QUÉ ORAR? Porque Dios lo manda. La oración es respuesta a una invitación divina. Mas, “invitación” es poco. Dios nos manda orar, de hecho a “orar sin cesar” (1 Tes 5,17)… Oramos para obedecer a Dios, no para que Él nos obedezca. No para cambiar la voluntad de Dios, sino para cambiar la nuestra; no para darle órdenes, sino para recibirlas. Oramos para “dejar que Dios sea Dios”. La oración se hace por obediencia a Dios porque Dios nos ha mandado pedir (Mt 7,7). Las tres razones por las que Dios nos manda orar se corresponden con nuestras tres necesidades más profundas…: la oración da la verdad a nuestra mente, la bondad a nuestra voluntad y la belleza a nuestro corazón. “Lo verdadero, lo bueno y lo bello” son las tres cosas que más necesitamos y amamos porque son tres atributos de Dios. La oración da verdad a nuestra mente porque nos pone en presencia de la Verdad misma… Trae bondad a nuestra voluntad porque la alínea con la voluntad de Dios… Trae la belleza a nuestro corazón porque nos sumerge en el corazón de Dios. Getting to Know the Saints Conozcamos a los Santos

ST. TERESA BENEDICTA OF THE CROSS — Edith Stein

was born in 1891 in Breslau, Poland, of a large Jewish family. A renowned philosopher, she studied phenomenology under Edmund Husserl. She was an atheist during her teen-age years. In 1921 she came across the autobiography of St. Teresa of Avila; and after reading it, she felt called to embrace the Catholic faith. She was baptized in 1922.

Eleven years later, Edith entered the Carmelite

convent in Cologne, taking the name Teresa Benedicta of the Cross. Sent to the Carmel at Echt, Holland, to escape the Nazi persecution, she was arrested with her sister Rose, who had also converted to Catholicism, when the Nazis invaded that country.

They were sent to the Auschwitz concentration

camp, where she was put to death in the gas chamber the very day of her arrival at the camp, Sunday, August 9, 1942. She was canonized by St. John Paul II in 1998 and is the co-patroness of Europe.

SANTA TERESA BENEDICTA DE LA CRUZ — Edith Stein nació de una familia judía en

Here too, we see the particular importance of the

moment of death. The Church has always experienced this dramatic passage in the light of Christ’s resurrection, which opened the way to the certainty of the life to come. We have a great challenge to face, especially in contemporary culture, which often tends to trivialize death to the point of treating it as an illusion or hiding it from sight. Yet death must be faced and prepared for as a painful and inescapable passage, yet one charged with immense meaning, for it is the ultimate act of love towards those we leave behind and towards God whom we go forth to meet.

more, call the parish office about RCIA, the Rite

of Christian Initiation of Adults.

This process is similar to what the early Church

followed when someone wanted to be baptized a

Christian. We will help you determine whether

you are unbaptized or if you were baptized as a

child, or perhaps baptized as a member of another

Christian denomination whose baptisms the

Church recognizes. If you are an active Catholic

and would like to refresh your knowledge of the

faith, this is for you also.

The process starts in the Fall and runs through

May. The goal of these RCIA sessions is to answer

any remaining questions you have and to give you

the fullness of the faith so that you can join the

Church at the Easter Vigil. But if at some point

you don’t feel ready, take your time and continue

your preparation. Whatever you do, don’t stop

asking questions! We are here for you!

Our group meets on Tuesdays from 7:30 pm to 9 p.m. starting September 12. COME, LET US WALK TOGETHER!
