The Chinese New Year, also known as ‘Spring Festi-

val’ is observed by Chinese communities worldwide.

The origin of Chinese New Year is itself centuries

old. The Chinese New Year is not only celebrated in

China but also in Hong Kong, Macau, Singapore,

Malaysia, Taiwan, and in Chinatowns in virtually

every large city in the world. The Chinese New Year

is celebrated with lion dances, fireworks, family

gatherings, meals, visiting friends & relatives, giving

gifts of red envelopes containing cash, purchasing

new clothing, shoes, haircuts and the paying of debts,

symbolizing a fresh start. In China, Spring Festival is

as important as Christmas in western countries.

The TCCI celebrated the Year of the Snake at the

Capitol Restaurant, Cannon Park. There were 200

guests, which filled the restaurant to capacity. This is

the second largest New Year celebration since our

first in February 1970.

The evening started with a lion dance. The lion

dancers, Nelson, Tony and Alan Liang, wound their

way around the tables and entertained the guests. The

TCCI President Iris He welcomed all guests, includ-

ing guest of honour the Mayor of Townsville, Coun-

cillor Jenny Hill and state and council members.

Mayor Jenny Hill spoke of the contribution made by

the Chinese people to the development of Australia,

and in particular the north.

The guests also enjoyed the performances, including

the Chinese New Year story by Fei Ren and Chenhua

Han , Butterfly on keyboard by Grace Chan, Kung

Fu by Andrew Wong, Taichi by Dr Joe Leong, and

Erhu performance by Paul Fung. Students of manda-

rin at the Confucius Classroom at the William Ross

State High School gave commendable performances

of recitation, a vocal solo Jasmine Song and a group

fan dance. Miss Nilinda Phongkangsananan and Mr.

Tony Hockings were the best-dressed lady and the

best-dressed gentleman of the night.

Apart from the fascinating Chinese New Year Din-

ner, the TCCI was invited to provide a Chinese New

Year window display at the Community Information

Centre to celebrate the Year of the Snake. We have

received some really positive feedback about the

display. The display was held from 1st of February to

15th of February. (Text by Geoffrey Jue Sue, Daly

Townsville has its Chinese Radio Show on FM

103.90 Radio 4 ttt since March 2012, with Dr

Molly Yang and Stephen Lin as Co-producers

and Iris Chang and Fei Ren as editors and pre-

senters. The team has Cantonese talents reserves

such as Ms Olivia Lo, for the proposed extra hour

for Cantonese program down the track. This con-

stituency represents the Greater China perfectly

as members come from Mainland China, Taiwan,

Hong Kong, and Southeast Asia.

Each Sunday from 9pm to 10 pm, the team will

present 1 hour of live program on air, featuring

news from Australia and overseas, government

information such as Centrelink policies in Man-

darin and Cantonese, community activities bulle-

tin and music. It serves a catchment of 130 km

radius from Townsville, with an open-book mem-

bership, ie we do not have a register of members.

From 18 December 2012, it has evolved into a

Net Radio, the Voice of the Great Barrier Reef at:

https://soundcloud.com/chinese-media. Providing

contents online has quite a few benefits: more

searchable by Chinese users all over the world;

more than the 1 hour show; not limited to the

time and frequency; more permanent and timely

programs and promotions for audience to listen to

on the net.

At the invitation of Museum of Tropical Queens-

land, the Chinese radio team has provided con-

tents to 2013 Chinese New Year Celebration and

Exhibition Launch on Saturday 9 February, the

Lantern Festival on Sunday 24 February, and the

exhibition will last till Friday 8 March.

North Queensland Chinese Communication

Group (Unincorporated) comes to existence dur-

ing the preparation for the events, and will take

on the tasks to become an active Chinese culture

promoter, multiculturalism advocate and hopeful-

ly to be the cradle for future visionary community

leaders. (Text and photos by Stephen Lin)

Melinda Holborn: The Chinese community in Townsville makes up

many of my family's closest friends. My father Bob, was the secre-

tary of the Club during the 1970's, and we have many fond memories

of the Club dating back to this time. After I worked for Westpac for

22 years, whilst my parents and sister ran the family florist shop –

The Silver Wattle, I established my own business "Wedding Gowns

by Melinda". I regard my involvement with the TCCI as a way to

keep our family ties with the Chinese community.
