The town of Safed (also spelled Tsfat, Zfat, Safad, Tzfat )

is a rather small town located in Northern Israel,

900 meters (3200 feet) above sea level in the mountains of the Upper Galilee

The old part of town consists of narrow cobblestone

alleys revealing artists' galleries, medieval synagogues,

private homes and small guest houses.

Legend has it that Safed

was founded by a son of Noah after the Great

Flood.

Hand-made artistic

candles, wax

artwork, and wax sculpture

s.

The oldest synagogue in Safed isthe Sephardi Ari which was founded in

1522 and was the favourite synagogue of the great Ari (Rabbi Yitzhak Luria)

who loved to pray and study the Torah there. He also found the view inspiring as it looked out on the tomb of a great scholar named Rabbi Shimon Bar Yohai ,not to speak of Mount Meron as well.
