FROM OUR PASTOR

Dear Friends, Happy New Year! I pray that this new year will bring you God’s peace and blessings. In this new year I’m going to ask you to think about something unusual. There are a lot of laws in world. Some of them make sense, right? It would make sense that there are laws against stealing, after all, imagine if it weren’t illegal to steal. But some laws are a bit strange. In our very own state, New York, it is illegal to put and ice cream cone in your pocket. Want to know why? So do I. No one knows for sure, this is a law that was passed for a very specific reason, yet no one remembers why. Some speculate that someone hid an ice cream cone in their pocket that they used to start a riot, but that is only a guess. This month’s book of the Bible is kind of like that. The book of Leviticus is a book of laws that were made to help the Israelites know how to live and treat each other. Leviticus is sometimes referred to as the “priest’s manual” because of how it gives instructions, like a ancient priest would, on how to be closer to God following the purity laws. The purity laws were ones given to God’s people to help them stay “clean.” Clean meant that they were worthy for God. They believed that outward things they did would make them clean for God. Certain things would make them “unclean,” such as not washing hands or eating certain animals. Many of these laws make sense in our modern-day mind because we understand germs. These laws kept God’s people very healthy. But there were times when these laws would not be used for godly reason. There are even a few laws, like the ice cream cone law, that don’t make sense and can even seem silly. I would imagine it was because a specific even happened and they wanted to make sure it never happened again. So why don’t we follow these laws today as Christians? When Jesus came to earth he found people following God who were so hung up on these laws that they missed the true meaning behind the laws. So he reminded them that its not about following the laws and eating the right things the right way. Jesus said: “Its not what goes into the mouth that defiles (makes unclean) and person, but what comes out of the mouth.” “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and soul and mind, and your neighbor as yourself.” These two things Jesus said reminded us that what really matter is loving God and loving neighbor, and that is not about what we eat, but about what is in our heart. I hope you enjoy Leviticus, and of course, if you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to ask! God’s peace,

Pastor Serena

A few friends who understand me and remain my friends;

A work to do which has real value,

without which the world would be the poorer;

A mind unafraid to travel, even though the trail be not blazed;

An understanding heart;

A sense of humor;

Time for quiet, silent meditation;

A feeling of the presence of God;

The patience to wait for the coming of these things,

With the wisdom to recognize them when they come. Amen
