FROM OUR PASTOR Dear Friends, This is an exciting month for us as the people of Town Line Lutheran Church! We are celebrating 160 years in ministry! There are many ways we are celebrating this, please read in this newsletter to hear about our Octoberfest, Telling the Story of Town Line, our Youth presenting Fairy Tale Theater, and so much more. We have many blessings to be thankful for, in our lives and as God’s people. I have many hopes for our future and where God is leading us. My biggest hope is this: that as we celebrate the past it inspires us to embrace the future and reaffirm our commitment to following Jesus and sharing our faith. There is also something else going on. We have a Bible study group meeting to work through the book of Revelation. This is one of the most challenging books of the Bible because there is so much misinformation out there. ( I am still willing to get an evening Bible study on Revelation: please speak to me soon, I am looking for the commitment of 2 more people. ) If you can’t come to Bible Study, you can read Revelation on your own this month. But let me first explain a little bit about the most misunderstood book in the Bible.

Revelation is not: a blueprint for the end of the world like many would have you believe. The book of Revelation is a specific type of literature. It is called apocalyptic writing. This type of writing served many purposes. It is part political cartoon, protest literature, and a story of hope. And this book revelation has one overall theme with many facets. The theme is this: God is ultimately in control.

Can you see how that might be appealing? Think about what Christians were going through when John wrote this book down. Many were being killed or persecuted just for their faith. All the images found in revelation show that God is and continues to work behind the scenes and that in the end, God wins, Good wins over evil, no matter how hard evil tries to win, God will win.

Revelation can also be confusing because of the numbers (7 was thought to be a perfect number and a symbol of God) and the way the writer (John) uses words to make pictures. It can also be scary; but remember, it’s not meant to be scary to those who have faith in God and Jesus Christ. If you have any questions or something that you wonder about, you can always ask me. I have a few good books that explain many of the weird words, numbers, and images found in Revelation. I hope that you find in Revelation some Good News and hear the powerful message that God is ultimately in control.

Happy Reading!

God’s peace,

Pastor Serena

Nursery School News

Nursery School is off to a good start with 13 boys and girls in attendance. The children have been getting to know each other and to know and understand our Nursery School routine and regulations. Cookie, our resident bunny is a big hit with the children as is our big goldfish who we call Goldie. This month we will be learning about Fire Safety and Farms. On October 8 we will take our first Field Trip to the Town Line Fire Hall. The children love to meet the firefighters and see the big fire trucks. Some of the children will even be brave enough to climb up into a fire truck for a look around. October 17 we are scheduled to visit the Kelkenberg Farm on Stage Road, Akron. While there the children will see many farm animals up close, have a hayride out to the field to pick a pumpkin, and take a ride on a pony.

We plan to have a Halloween costume party on October 31st with Trick or Treating at Greenfields Court and Manor with the assistance of some of the parents. It is always a treat for the Greenfield residents to see the little children dressed up and

looking so cute in their costumes.

Nursery School Fundraiser Our Fall Fund raiser will take place this month and into early November. We will be taking orders for Henry’s Christmas chocolates. A Nursery School board member will be available in the gathering space on Sunday mornings during the Sunday School hour beginning October 20 through Nov. 10. Board members, Penny Butlak, Thelma Dabb, Jodi Rospierski, Diana Streit, Lois Stutzman. Any purchase you make will be appreciated!

Telling the Story of Town Line.

In honor of 160 years in ministry the stewardship committee has set aside 4 Sundays to "Tell the Story of Town Line." They will share with us how being a part of Town Line church has made a difference in their lives. We hope you enjoy their stories and we hope that it will make you think about how being a part of Town Line Lutheran Church has made a difference in your life too!

Below are the 1st two weeks of 4

From Gordon Griffith – September 15, 2013 Good Morning. Judy, my wife and I regularly attend late service so you may wonder why I am up here to speak. Well, a member from the Stewardship Committee asked me a few weeks ago if I would share my 50 years of blessings and benefits from membership at this church at both the early and late service. First I want to say I don’t like talking about myself. I met with Pastor Serena about those things I would discuss. She said to do it anyway because my experiences may be helpful for other church members. So to begin I go back 54 years ago to May 1959 when Judy and I rented an apartment in Depew not far from St. John’s Lutheran church in Depew. Shortly thereafter we became members of this church. Judy her parents and sister were members of a Lutheran church in Buffalo. I was not a member of any church and I might add neither were my parents. My Mother insisted as a youngster to attend Sunday school at a nearby church where we lived in Pike, New York in Wyoming County. That lasted about 6 years. Pastor Neeb of St. John’s Lutheran instructed me about godly principles as a Lutheran and on Christmas Eve December 24, 1961 I and another person were baptized and confirmed as adults. For me it was an awesome experience. Three years later in 1962 we purchased a home in Alden and continued to drive from Alden to Depew. In May 1964 our first child, Steve, entered the world followed by Mark in 1966. We decided driving from Alden to Depew was too far. We noticed this Lutheran church on Broadway and Town Line and attended a service one Sunday morning. We met Pastor Stratton, liked what he said and what we saw. We became members in September 1964. Continued………

Gordon continued In the 1960’s bowling was a popular activity. The two alleys located in the church basement was a great spot to get acquainted with some church members on these leagues. It was the first example of a nice benefit that I experienced. As time went by over these many 50 plus years I felt comfortable serving the church body. A big help was work employment skills in accounting, finance and sales that led to teaching Sunday school, audit records, treasurer and financial secretary positions, layman’s service, ushering, reading Sunday lessons, communion service, communion setup and cleanup with Judy. I am also part of the Eucharist program which involves taking communion to our shut ins after the service. Not to forget to mention a wonderful blessing is the Bethel series. The study was a major undertaking conducted by several trained lay persons to over 90 members. It provided excellent thought food from Genesis through Revelation concerning major significant biblical events. There have been other Bible studies through the years we attended. These years at Town Line Lutheran Church has been like being a part of a second family not only for me and Judy but as well for our sons Steve and Mark who now belong to a Lutheran church where they live. In conclusion thank you for your time. God Bless you all! Have a great day!

What TLLC Means to Me Sue DeWitt September 22, 2013 I came to Town Line Lutheran Church nine years ago. Prior to that, I had attended sporadically the church I grew up in, more out of a sense of obligation than faith. I felt I should go to church and that was the church I went to.

But I had questions about what I truly believed. I wanted to know more about how to live my life in a God-pleasing way. There finally came an incident that pushed me to look for a new church.

Town Line was the logical first stop on the church tour. It had been my husband’s church as a youth and my father had recently joined. And so, on a cold February morning in 2004 we came to worship.

I found myself greeted and welcomed. I found sermons that guided me and made me reflect. I missed some of the music from my former church, but was astounded to find that hymns had more than one verse. The first stop on the church tour was the last.

In Luke, Chapter 6, Jesus tells us that a person who hears His words and acts on them will be like one who built a house on solid rock. When the flood comes, the house will not be shaken. I’m not there yet. When I went through life’s storms a few years back, my house was shaken. My faith was shaken. I questioned, and still question, God.

But I haven’t given up. I haven’t abandoned the house entirely. I keep coming to Town Line Lutheran Church to hear Jesus’ words and get guidance on how to act on them. I get assurance that He will be with me to the end of the age. And I’m anchored in a faith community helping me to build my house on solid rock.

Page 15: The Town Line Lutheran · 10.10.2013  · October 2013 8:30 and 11:00 am Sunday School Our Mission 9:45 – “Called to Be a Servant Community”10:45 am 160th Anniversary . FROM

Mike Dewitt – September 22, 2013 How has Town Line Lutheran Church changed my life? I think that my story will be similar to those of many of our members. It is not filled with drama or sudden epiphanies, but is more of a gradual progression and (hopefully) growth in faith. I’m a slow learner so it takes me a long time to realize things that have great meaning.

I’ll start with a little personal history. My family moved to Alden in 1975, and came to Town Line shortly after that, probably in 1976 but when you’re 9 years old you don’t pay a lot of attention to those kinds of details. We spent a number of years here and it is where I was baptized and confirmed, and we where I attended Sunday School. Some of the folks that taught in the Sunday School when I was a kid are still here today, and I’m guessing that they don’t remember my brother and me as their best behaved students.

After confirmation I grew away from Church and organized religion for quite a while. It wasn’t until Sue and I were married for a number of years that I matured enough to realize that I needed more direction in how to live a life with more connection to God and our community. It’s the slow learner thing again. After trying Sue’s home church for a few years we found that it wasn’t fully meeting our needs in that regard, there was a lot of emphasis on things that just didn’t seem to be that important and little talk about how to help others or what you could broadly call issues of social justice.

What I find here at Town Line are Bible readings and sermons that talk more about these issues and provide guide posts that help direct me to be a better person, a better and active member of the community, and emphasize the forgiveness that we have through faith and our obligation to extend that same forgiveness to others. I find that attending services regularly is an excellent way to start the week with something that can be calming and inspirational. Continued……….

Page 16: The Town Line Lutheran · 10.10.2013  · October 2013 8:30 and 11:00 am Sunday School Our Mission 9:45 – “Called to Be a Servant Community”10:45 am 160th Anniversary . FROM

Mike continued If you were to ask me what the most important thing that I have learned from being here and listening to the lessons, sermons and hymns is, I would say that it is the importance of being an active participant and giver of my time, talent and treasure. Especially time. At this point in my life, time is my most precious commodity and there is no surer way to irritate me than to do something that I perceive as wasting my time. Here at Town Line I am learning, slowly as always, that everything I have – including my time – is given to me by God and I could lose all of what I “own” in a moment. As Jesus says in the parable of the rich fool in Luke chapter 12 “You fool, tonight your life is required of you”. It’s been a hard lesson for me to absorb and I am glad of the reminders of it that I receive here in this place. So I am thankful for this church and its people who help me gain and maintain this perspective. Currently, and in the past, you have entrusted me with the responsibility to serve on the Church Council, as well as provided other opportunities to be an active member. Through those opportunities I have learned much about what it means to be an involved part of this church and the wider community upon which it has such a positive impact. I thank you for that trust and hope that you continue to inspire me to be active and positive about the use of my time and such talents as I possess.
