Chief Grant told the seniors that “this building is very safe. It has concrete construction, metal doors, and strong fire suppression systems.” He went on to say that “most small fires are going to start from unsafe cooking or smoking.” He summed up everything by saying “if there is a fire in the building not near you, stay in your apartment. If you have to leave and can’t get out, we’ll come for you.” “The best way to be safe is stay in your apartment. Management has provided a list of people with mobility issues,” Chief Grant re-emphasized.

A presentation was held for Towers’ residents by the New Haven Fire

Department and the New Haven Firebirds Society in conjunction with the City of New Haven. The program, led by NHFD Chief Michael Grant and NHFD Firefighter Michael Neal, member of the New Haven Firebirds Society, is the city’s first sustained fire prevention and safety program designed specifically for older adults.

Firefighter Neal, ap-proached by a local friend and concerned citizen, was asked to help coordinate this partnership. Neal, who is also active in the Firebirds, the fraternal organization of black firefighters, and the department embraced the initiative.

“If you look at fire deaths in the U.S., it’s usually the very young and the very old or handicapped,” said Chief Michael Grant as some 100

seniors, some in wheelchairs or maneuvering with walkers, gathered in the Tower One dining room.

Chief Grant told the seniors that “this building is very safe. It has concrete construction, metal doors, and strong fire suppression systems.” He went on to say that “most small fires are going to start from unsafe cooking or smoking.”

He summed up everything by saying “if there is a fire in the building not near you, stay in your apartment. If you have to leave and can’t get out, we’ll come for you.”

“The best way to be safe is stay in your apartment. Management has provided a list of people with mobility issues,” Chief Grant re-emphasized.

Isabel Bailin

Isabel Bailin ReceivesYouth Volunteer Award

The Greater New Haven Association of Volunteer Adminis-trators awarded Isabel

Bailin, Towers’ Volunteer, their Youth Volunteer Award at the Annual Volunteer Appreciation Breakfast. Each year, AVA recognizes individuals who have made a significant contribution as a volunteer in greater New Haven.

Isabel is a student at the Hopkins School in New Haven, and has volunteered at the Towers for five years. She is creative, resourceful, and most important has made an incredible connection with our seniors. Isabel has initiated the following activities with our residents:

Board Game Sundays: Isabel began her connection with Tower One/Tower East as a twelve-year-old, coming each Sunday to enjoy the company of the residents in a casual and fun environment. Certain residents planned their weekends to be sure to be available for Isabel’s visits.

LifeBoard Project: Isabel

applied for and received a grant from the Women of Vision Society to run a multi-session program that engaged our seniors with images of past events to help them communicate a life story in pictures.

Veterans’ Voices: Having studied World War II, Isabel chose to accept an assignment to interview six residents who are veterans of the war. She designed the questions, taped the entire conversations and

transcribed the content.B’nai Mitzvah Interviews:

Twenty-seven seniors who had never had the opportunity to become Bar and Bat Mitzvah when they were younger studied with Rabbi Benjamin Scolnic to achieve this accomplishment. Isabel volunteered to interview each resident for a published guide to accompany the service to tell each resident’s personal story.

Karaoke Sundays: Isabel ran a weekly karaoke program, having procured a system and the appropriate materials for songs that were especially popular in the 1930s, 40s and 50s to engage the residents in song and memories.

Isabel has touched the lives of many of our residents. Her positive energy and cheerful smile greets our residents as friends, not as fragile seniors.

We could not be more proud of Isabel and her being honored as the Youth Volunteer and recognized for her special contributions to the Towers community and the New Haven community.

With the support and direction of resident family members Bernadette DiGuilian (daughter of Irene Potocki), Lori Weiss (daughter of Gen Nishball) and Charlene Wendell (daughter-in- law of Annette Wendell), Tower One/Tower East has created the Towers Family Association.

The mission of the Towers Family Association is to engage and empower families to work together with the Staff and Board of Directors of Tower One and Tower East to advocate for the residents of the Towers. Our goal is to provide a nurturing environment that promotes the well-being of our residents so that they can remain safely in their homes at The Towers.

The first project of the Towers Family Association is the establishment of a Mentor Program. Current family members who have participated in a training session have volunteered to work together with the families of new residents to help in the transition to life at the Towers and will be available to answer any questions.

Mentors will be available to all families of residents. Our goal is to be supportive of the family caregivers. We are very excited about this opportunity and appreciate the efforts of our families who have organized this new support system!

Noella was kept in the dark about this award until the day of the event. On that day she was very surprised and humbled by this honor.

Noella Rhone Receives CALA Award

Noella Rhone being presented the Connecticut Assisted Living Association Resident Services Award this past Friday at the Water’s Edge. She was nominated by State Representative, Gayle Slossberg and Executive Director of CALA, Chris Carter

On Friday, June 22, 2012 Noella Rhone (former Towers’ employee and presently a nurse with

Utopia Assisted Living Services at the Towers) received the 2012 Conecticut Assisted Living Association Resident Service Award. Noella was nominated for her award by Senator Gayle Slossberg, who says of Noella, “having a caregiver like Noella is better than a big ship lifting you out of the storm and keeping you safe—Noella even adds the sunshine and the calm sea.” Noella was assigned to Senator Slossberg’s parents the first day.

Although the resident was difficult to please, Noella was able to connect with Senator Slossberg’s father and he came to trust her and consider her a friend. She was the only one who could convince him to get out of the apartment and socialize when he was depressed and got him to join the Towers’ Men’s Club, an activity he came to look forward to every week. Noella spent countless hours off the clock visiting with him when he got cancer, and helping the senator figure out how to care for him, from navigating hospice to grocery deliveries.

After the senator’s father passed, the family was in

disarray. Noella stepped in to help with the mother and spent hours brainstorming with the family on how to help Mom have the highest quality of life she could. “But the most remarkable thing about Noella is that she has this relationship with all her clients.”

Noella has been part of the Towers’ family since 1993. She started out as a home care nurse with the first agency contracted by the Towers to provide on-site home care services for Towers

Tower One/Tower EastRecognizes Volunteers

Pictured L-R: Ray Stermon, Barry Vine and Towers’Resident’s Association President, Harriet Sidransky

Barry Vine and Martha Weisbart

At our recent Volun-teer Recognition event, the Towers honored both

residents and community volunteers for their service. What they do makes the Towers an extraordinary place for seniors to live.

Martha Weisbart is the founder of “Nails to Go,” a group of volunteers who set up a mini nail salon twice a month for our residents. “Nails To Go” allows the residents the double pleasures of socializing and being treated to a manicure. Martha then shared with the audience the definition of a volunteer.:

Volunteer, noun: One who chooses to act in recognition of a need, with an attitude of social responsibility and without con-cern for monetary profit, going beyond one’s basic obligations.

Martha recognized all the volunteers that make the Towers unique.

A special presentation was made by former Board Member Raymon Sterman to Barry Vine, a longtime friend and volunteer at the Towers. Barry also received recognition from the Towers Resident Association for all of his support for their programs and activities.

The afternoon concluded by a performance of the Towers Chorus.
