October 2015 The Rev. M. Carl Lunden, Rector
Commitment Sundays: October 4, 11, and 18
Stewardship for 2016
From the Chair of the Stewardship Committee
We will be holding the Stewardship Commitment
Sundays on October 4, 11 and 18th. Members of the
committee will be available before and after the 9 AM
and 10:30 AM services to assist members in filling out
a pledge card. We need 100% support of the St. James
membership if we are going to be successful in meet-
ing the financial goals for 2016.We lost several mem-
bers of St. James who gave freely of their time and
talent to St. James and were regular supporters of St.
James financially. They will be missed.
Among the many important and necessary opportuni-
ties that occur in the life of St. James is stewardship.
In fact, everything we do at St. James is an expression of our Christian Stewardship. Steward-
ship is our covenant with God.
For too long our understanding and practice of stewardship focused more on our personal giv-
ing to the work of God and less on God’s faithfulness to us. Stewardship became a favor we
do for God and the church. Often this means the giving of money to the church. But Steward-
ship is more than giving money. It involves the use of our Talent- our gifts and skills. It in-
volves the use of our Time- our leisure and business. It involves our Passion- our decisions
and peace with God. Stewardship is grounded in the understanding that all we have and all
that we are , belong to God and has been entrusted to us. Stewardship is a faithful response to
God’s generosity.

Indeed, Stewardship is only possible because we can trust God to be faithful to us.
Therefore I invite all members of St. James to a prayerful reflection on Stewardship begin-
ning with the ministries of St. James and God’s activity in your life. I hope the reflection
will lead to a faithful response to God’s presence in each of us. Please join in making a
pledge to support the operating budget of St. James for 2016.
Please keep up with your pledge for 2015 as we enter the final months of the year. Sign up
to give of your time and talents for the work of the organizations of St. James. Many groups
need additional members.

Have the Conversation…
We know what we want to say, but we just don’t say
it. The words just don’t seem to come out. Why is it so diffi-
cult at times to simply have a conversation?? We’re only
talking about a few minutes of open conversation about a top-
ic that needs to be discussed, right? Wrong, we all know bet-
ter. There are some things that we either need to express or
simply just know that someone close to us needs to hear, but
oh how this can weigh on us at times as we seek for the right
words and the right time. Let’s face it, words can make all
the difference in the world to someone if spoken in the right tone, and at the right time and with the
right choice of words. Or, we may seriously damage a relationship if we don’t think it through and
consider our words carefully.
Yup, talking is easy, we do it all the time, every day and with many, many different people. But
what about the true and deep felt thoughts and feelings that we need to share? Those heartfelt thoughts
that are buried deep and eventually need to surface?? How do we go about readying ourselves for those
conversations? Some of us may prepare, some of us just blurt it out, but regardless of our different ap-
proaches, speaking the words that we know need to be said leaves us with a sense of freedom, and a
weight lifted off our shoulders.
We may go about our daily lives sharing information that simply skims the surface, or shares
some level of information that has no emotional content, but when we have that burning desire to have
someone truly understand our thoughts, where do we go? How do we start to sort out our thoughts and
feelings to even have a chance of having them make sense??
The place to start is the place where all things need to begin, with prayer. Prayer is communi-
cating with the One who we can open up to and share our deepest thoughts and feelings, knowing that
there will be no judgment, no cutting questions or comments and no worry of having our thoughts leak
to others. Jesus is the One we can go to quietly, with all of our tangled thoughts and confused ideas,
and simply tell our story. In Him there is freedom from worry, concerns, our past ghosts and our future
storms.
Jesus understands all our words, no matter how twisted, because He looks beyond them and sees
what’s in our hearts. He will always help us sort out our thoughts and words so we can confidently ap-
proach others and share exactly what it is we need to share. He is always there for us, and prayer is the
first step in true, open communication with the Lord to free ourselves from the burdens we’ve created
within ourselves and with others.
Whether we have a desire to share our own feelings and concerns, or know deep down that there
is a conversation waiting to be had with someone else, we always need to turn to the Lord first for
guidance. Go to a quiet place, say a prayer to Jesus. With Him, you can always, well,…, have the con-
versation!
Enjoy the Fall season,
Dom Perfetti
