The Top 20 Principles to Being Successful in the Army 1. Be 100% by giving 100% all of the time. Your instincts and actions will define who you are. 2. Everyone has something that they can teach someone else. Ignorance comes when you believe that you can’t learn from a situation or person (regardless of rank). 3. Self-assess. There will always be room for improvement and a million ways to accomplish the same mission. 4. Seek out information daily, and when given to you, write it down. 5. Truly care about your job, the mission, and your team. 6. Your career will take you wherever you steer it. If you cannot or will not control the helm then it will simply sail straight. 7. When you hate doing something, it’s generally because you suck at it. Do it as much as possible. 8. Not having goals is like doing land navigation without points. Set daily, short and long-term goals. Ensure that you meet those goals or continue to try until you do. 9. We cannot always control the events in our lives, but we can always control our reactions. 10. When you find yourself in a difficult position always use visual imagery. Train your mind like you would train your body (visualize your battlefield). 11. PT and water fixes almost all issues. Do PT everyday. 12. Always seek to improve your foxhole (never leave any situation or area in the same state that you found it in). 13. Your team will always come before you, and the mission before your team. 14. Maintain your weapon and police up your ammo and frags. 15. Keep your head on a swivel. 16. Your initial instincts are always the most accurate, as your mind hasn’t jaded in the information. If something feels wrong, then it is probably morally or ethically wrong. If you feel driven to do something, it is usually the right answer. 17. If you have to think about it twice or ask if it’s okay, it usually isn’t. 18. Volunteer for 90% of all tasks, what you will learn and where you will go will always put you ahead of your peers; and lazy people should make you sick. 19. If you don’t know something figure it out on your own. Google is a powerful thing, but if you are still crazy about it, ask. 20. The only physical limitations you have are the ones that your mind builds to protect you from sucking. Knock them down! The body is an amazing machine and your capabilities are endless.
