THE TOP 100 WOMEN FINANCIAL ADVISORSHere are America’s leading women financial advisors, as identified by Barron’s. The ranking reflects the volume of assets overseen by the advisors and their teams, revenues generated for the firms, and the qualityof the advisors’ practices. The scoring system assigns a top score of 100 and rates the rest by comparing them with the No. 1 advisor. A ranking of ‘N’ for 2012 indicates the advisor was not ranked in that year.

says, is her team’s focus on service. Bach, alongwith two other advisors and three assistants, has an 800-client roster, but those she servesoften rave that they feel like her only client.Good service, says Bach, can be as simple
as responding to calls quickly. She also avoidse-mail in favor of the 20th-century approach:Phone calls, letters, and meetings. Clientsknow that Bach is available not just for big-picture planning but also for practical helpwith all kinds of financial transactions. Sheand her team help clients refinance theirhouses, vet loan offers from car dealerships, and navigate through IRA rollovers. In a clear sign that families appreciate
the efforts, Bach says that every new clientin the past 10 years has come through areferral from an existing client.Bach is proof that an advisor doesn’t have
to be a stock-picking guru to be successful. She and her team use asset allocation todesign investment portfolios suited to eachclient’s risk tolerance, goals, and time frame. But they turn to trusted third-party assetmanagers to handle the actual investing.“We let the professionals do the money
management,” she says.Bach does watch the market carefully, and
she has a bullish outlook on stocks. “I’m alittle cautious in the short term just becauseit’s been so good,” she says, adding that a10%-to-15% pullback wouldn’t be surprising.“But I’m very optimistic for the long haul.”Bach, 42, is leery of bonds for income
generation, focusing instead on overall re-turns. She advises clients to cover their cashneeds by having 12 to 18 months of livingexpenses in cash or CDs.Many of her clients, who have typically
amassed $3 million or $4 million over thecourse of their careers, are anxious aboutwhat lies ahead. “The No. 1 question theycome in with is, ‘Do I have enough money toretire?’ ” says Bach. That fear, filtered through the market rally,
can translate into conservative or aggressiveimpulses. Clients might want to circle thewagons fearing the market will drop, she says.Or they may want to ratchet up the risk in the
hope of riding the rally upward.“It’s a very schizo conversation I’m hav-
ing,” she says.Bach started her career as an intern at her
father’s firm, Dean Witter, and has remainedwith the company through its iterations overthe years. Her practice became “my baby,”she says, to the point where she delayed start-ing her actual family until two years ago.“I was so scared to tell clients [I was preg-
nant]; I was afraid they’d think I wasn’t com-ing back,” says Bach, who has a 2-year-old girl, and a boy on the way. “But they were so happyfor me—they felt like part of the family.”

Many top advisors have intriguing inter-ests outside the office: They race catamarans, they fly planes, they mold themselves intoformidable golfers. Then there’s Rosenau, whose interests almost start and end withinvesting. “To be honest, the market is myhobby,” says Rosenau, 53, who managesmore than $850 million of assets. It has been a lucrative hobby at that.
Rosenau began investing (and subscribing toThe Wall Street Journal) at age 13. With sav-ings from summer jobs invested in the mar-ket, she paid for her MBA. In the course ofher education, she’s earned degrees in mathe-matics, and in finance and taxation. Today, she continues to invest her own money—practically her whole net worth minus realestate—alongside that of her clients.Over a 28-year career, Rosenau has dis-
tinguished herself as an investment advisorwith a keen contrarian instinct. She avoidedtech during its boom years of the ’90s, stick-ing to her guns even while underperforming, losing clients, and, she admits, being “scaredout of my mind.” Likewise, she broke fromthe pack by avoided financials leading up tothe 2008 crash. In the end, of course, her conviction paid
off. From Jan. 1, 2000, through March 31,2013, Rosenau’s large-cap core strategy wasup close to 79%, net of fees, crushing theS&P 500’s 37% over the same span.Unlike many advisor groups, Rosenau’s
“I’m a little cautious in the short term just because
it’s been so good,” says Emily Bach. “But I’m very
optimistic for the long haul.”
