The TOH Top 100: Best New Home Products 2012Finishing Touches: New Old Paper
Sculptured surfaces Wallpaper, by York Wallcoverings
Running a proprietary new ink nearly as thick as plaster through
circa 1895 steam-powered surface presses creates a pronounced relief
that looks and feels like handmade papers. But the automated process
keeps the cost within reach.

Grownup Wallpaper for the Sandbox Set
The story of children’s décor has been
re-spun by the designers at York
Wallcoverings to tell the true tale of
today’s sandbox set: Good taste starts early.
York’s "Peek-A-Boo" collection celebrates
precociousness. Yet designs are derived
from a discerning grownup's take on style.
Tasteful teal, for example, gives back-to-
basics ABCs a certain cheekiness, while
exposed brick designs lend kids' rooms an
uber-chic urbanity.
Baroque frames that beg to be filled with
mementos of the moment, gender-neutral
hot air balloons featuring a pattern-within-
a-pattern and whimsical birds and
branches are just a few of the images in the
collection. All give birth to décor that will
grow with a child.

The Red, White and Blue of Home Decorating
You might not be inclined to paint your
home Republican red or Democratic blue,
but color and design experts say there's no
doubt that the just-concluded presidential
election has had an impact on home
decorating.
Major news events always influence the
homescape, especially when they are
emotionally charged.
"A past example is 9-11," said Dee
Schlotter, national color brand manager
for Pittsburgh Paints. "After that
catastrophic event, soft pink and chocolate
brown combinations were huge. Soft pink
represents a compassionate color, and
chocolate brown is a grounding, cocooning
color. This is how people felt after that
event. They wanted security and
compassion, and those colors represented
that."
The current election cycle has been a
particularly emotional one, as candidates
have battled issues ranging from Medicare
benefits and exit strategies in Afghanistan
to gay marriage and the meaning of rape.
The result on home decorating has been a
retreat to neutrals, such as browns, grays
and creamy whites; colors that evoke calm
and sanctuary, including shades of blue
and violet; and traditional geometric
patterns, from plaids and chevrons to
honeycombs and polka dots.
In short, home décor has become more
This wallpaper design from York Wallcoverings captures the importance of women's issues in the current election cycle.

calming as well as a bit more
"conservative," according to some experts,
but not in the political sense of the word.
Election issues are creating a trend for
calming looks, as Pittsburgh Paints shows
in this color scheme from the Everyday
Hero palette.
Barbara Schirmeister, color and design
consultant for Hunter Douglas and a
member of The Color Association of the
United States, described the home palette
as "toned down" and predicted that it will
remain that way until serious issues are
resolved.
True, some bright colors have moved their
way into home fashion products on the
market. Schirmeister suggested that these
brighter colors provide a glimmer of hope
in our uncertain climate while generating
some enthusiasm in buyers. "These are
small, enticing treats of color to draw the
consumer in," she added.
A BLUE STATE
Blue is being propelled to the top of home
decor because iit's such a soothing color.
According to Krim Danzinger of
AkzoNobel, the color in a deep indigo
shade provides a draamatic background to
white in the form of vases, pottery, frames
and small sculptures.
Political events tend to impact fashion on
every level, said designer Sally Morse,
director of creative services for Hunter
Douglas. "While the White House is an
official office, the residents put their own
marks on it. Many of us think we would
like to know them, to be more like them
(so) we emulate their style," she said.
First Ladies historically have had a
dramatic influence on personal fashion.
Jackie Kennedy made pillbox hats popular,
while Nancy Reagan made wearing red the
color of choice. Morse noted that Michelle
Obama more recently "has brought back
the dress."
In election years, changes on the
homefront tend not to be so dramatic.
However, many experts reported that blue
definitely is on the rise in home décor and
is a top-selling color in home-fashion
products.
The color is trending not because of any
ties to a particular political party but
because it's one of Mother Nature's most
soothing hues. From light sky blue to deep
oceanic shades, blue also works within a
variety of color schemes.
Blue is so versatile that AkzoNobel has
named Indigo Night, a deep and dark hue,
the home-fashion color of the year for
2013.
Dark blue walls and white trim provide a
striking yet serene backdrop to this
colorful roomset provided by Pittsburgh
Paints.
"The ways that we might use this color are
vast," said Krim Danzinger, AkzoNobel's
senior color consultant. "To begin, this
color is perfectly paired with many other
colors of the spectrum. Combined with
neutrals of gray, it is sophisticated. With a
bright lime, it is more playful. With
violets, it is magical."
Depending on how it's used, dark blue can
bring sophistication to a home office or
serenity to a bedroom. Regardless, Indigo
Night "is deep, soothing, relaxing and
inspiring," Danzinger said, noting that the
color is perfect for calming pre-election
jitters. "It provides us with a sense of
security and a grounded comfort."
Pittsburgh Paints also has seen the rise of
blue's popularity in home décor.
Ironically, the company's Modernist Tech
trend palette includes shades of red, white
and blue. The blue in the palette isn't
exactly a patriotic blue, as Schlotter
explained, "but it does have a fun
expression, even though it wasn't
consciously chosen because of the
election."
While the current home palette may be
calming, this doesn't mean it's boring. In
the last two years, "Color has come back
big time," Schlotter said. Schlotter argued
that there are many rich colors to be
found in home-fashion products‒and
sophisticated colors at that.
Schlotter largely credits social media for
this turn of events, which not only has
been a big player in broadcasting election
news but also information involving every
area of our lives.
"The current color trends for 2013
represent the high level of creativity that is
very well articulated today through social
media‒sharing, posting and 'liking' things,"
Schlotter explained. "The colors and
mixing of colors are more sophisticated
and complex. We see customers way more
at ease with color (as) technology has made
it easy to articulate and fine-tune the look
or trend a customer is trying to achieve."

RED AND "GREEN"
And what about red, that other patriotic
color? Red likewise is on the rise, a
development that wasn't expected this late
in 2012.
The growing popularity of traditional
patterns, like this one from York
Wallcoverings, is heavily influenced by
consumer uncertainty over current issues.
Red is a rising color in home decorating
and is expected to continue its ascension
as we approach the 2016 summer games in
Brazil.
Red over the past few years had been a top
seller in paint, wallcovering, upholstery,
textiles and other home fashions.
However, many experts believed it would
be on a decline by now.
Gina Shaw, vice president of product
development for York Wallcoverings,
reported that red is "re-trending." The
color has been all over the fashion
runways, she said, which means that it will
be moving even more predominantly into
our homes.
What has propelled red back into the
picture? Maybe the election but more than
likely the Olympic games. With the recent
London Olympics, experts noted that
there has been a resurgence of Union Jack
colors and themes.
Red may remain a big player in home
decorating for several more years,
supported by the already emerging hype
for the 2016 summer games in Rio de
Janeiro. "With the Olympics in Brazil
approaching, look for more vibrant and
cheerful colors‒reds, oranges, yellows,
black and white with bright pops of color,"
Shaw predicted.
Perhaps the biggest impact any election
has on home décor is that it tends to slow
down spending. With so much
uncertainty in their futures, consumers
wait to learn the answers to important
questions. Who will take office? And what
policies might be instituted that affect
their jobs, pocketbooks and day-to-day
lives?
Consequently, "If there are dollars invested
in decorating, the styles tend to be more
conservative and neutral," Shaw said.
This time around, the spending slowdown
might stretch well into 2013. Morse of
Hunter Douglas said the issues are so
complex that consumers may not know
how they feel six months from now, let
alone in the first few weeks after the Nov.
6 election deadline.
However, Morse suggested that over time
we'll get a sense of the mood of the
country from the colors consumers choose
to use at home. It's a simple but effective
barometer: Muddy colors and a drive
toward neutrals will suggest pessimism;
clearer, bright colors, optimism.
The growing popularity of traditional patterns, like this one from York Wallcoverings, is heavily influenced by consumer uncertainty over current issues. Red is a rising color in home decorating and is expected to continue its ascension as we approach the 2016 summer games in Brazil.
