In The Tin Forest story, there’s a wee old man, and he lives in a wide windswept place, near nowhere and close to forgotten, and it’s covered in other people’s rubbish. He spends all day sifting and sorting the rubbish, and he wishes he lived in a place that wasn’t full of rubbish – he wishes he lived in a flourishing forest. And he wishes there were animals and plants and trees and beautiful things.

But it’s not going to grow on its own. So an idea plants itself in his head. He’ll build it himself. His own forest. Out of bits of rubbish. A tin forest. And guess what happens? You’ll need to come and see it, if you want to know what happens.

The Tin Forest story is a bit like the story of Glasgow from… let’s say from 1896 onwards. That’s when they built the South Rotunda. Majestic, isn’t it? It was the entrance and exit for a series of tunnels under the Clyde. Horses, carts, people and, later, cars used to go down on big hydraulic lifts to three tunnels running under the river. Guess where the other end comes out?

Anyway, that was a feat of engineering in 1896. And for the next 70 years, Glasgow built lots of big stuff. Big, heavy stuff. Sent it all over the world.

Then things changed. And that became the past, just stories, debris. The stories live on but the city had to change. So what are we now?

A cultural city? A creative city? A digital city? A global city? And how does that suit us?

At the end of 2013, we took The Tin Forest story to four post-industrial communities across Glasgow; to schools, community groups, clubs, workplaces and cafés and other places. We asked people what they thought about the story. And we asked them the questions at the top of this page. And that’s when our Tin Forest started to grow. It grew into a flourishing forest of stories, songs, lanterns, light shows, dance, photographs, poems, spitfires, promises, movement, video and, yes, theatre too. You can see how it grew at thetinforest.com. And if you’re reading this sometime in June, there’s a chance you might catch one of the theatre events created by each community – see the back of this booklet for info.

Now we’re here and things continue to grow. We’ve reinvented the South Rotunda and invited over 200 theatre makers from across Glasgow, across Scotland and across the Commonwealth, to join us here and along the Clydeside for two special weeks. We’ll ask them to tell us about themselves and the changing world they live in, and what they’re going to do about it. We’ll ask you too.

It’ll be a festival of stories and ideas and cultural exchange; a way to celebrate creativity and a way to celebrate Glasgow, as the city welcomes the world this summer.

This is where we celebrate everything that’s been created so far as part of The Tin Forest project, and where we look forward to the two week festival of events about to ignite.

Our six-piece house band will be joined by guest singers, musicians and speakers, including over 100 performers from The Tin Forest Glasgow community events and the 200 young theatre makers from around the Commonwealth taking part in our International Theatre Festival and International Performing Company.

There was once a wide windswept place, home to the Forgotten, Workers, Dreamers, Players and Travellers…

Inspired by The Tin Forest story and by a string of Clydeside landmarks, The Tin Forest International Performing Company will bring Glasgow’s riverside to life over three special days in July 2014.

90 young theatre makers from across the Commonwealth will form 5 groups, representing the people - past and present - who have lived in and passed through Glasgow: the Forgotten, the Workers, the Dreamers, the Players and the Travellers.

Each group will create a piece of pop-up theatre inspired by their performance hub - a special riverside location. The performances are free; just find your way to each performance hub.

After each performance, the groups will travel across Glasgow to their next hub, bringing the streets, spaces and public transport system to life.

WEDNESDAY 23 JULY THE SOUTH ROTUNDA 2.30–3.15PMThe day before the transformed South Rotunda opens its doors, all 90 performers converge on the courtyard by the Clyde, for a special performance uniting the five groups.

Graham McLaren’s adaptation entices audience members (in gaggles of ten at a time) – behind the walls of a magically transformed South Rotunda, on a walk through the old man’s weird and wonky world. An oddball cast of lovable bampots and eccentric puppets guide brave punters through manky wee howffs and wide windswept places alike…

Their second mission: to take part in a week-long programme of intensive theatre skills workshops, masterclasses and cultural exchange sessions. Each evening, the groups will perform at the South Rotunda but by day, they’ll be learning and sharing, forging new ideas and friendships.

The story of The Tin Forest sees a man dreaming of a better world - then beginning to build it. Here in the South Rotunda in Glasgow, the National Theatre of Scotland is inviting you to do the same. Through debate, discussion, and maybe even a bit of a sing-song, we’ll hear and give voice to all our hopes and dreams. Nothing is too specific, nothing is too fantastical.
