Later a man calling himself Dmitri claimed to be the heir to the

throne, appeared in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. Dmitri had been stabbed to death before his brother Feodor’s

death, supposedly by Godunov’s order. The strange individual who was impersonating him was regarded

as the rightful heir by many of the people. He attracted support both in Russia and outside its borders. Russians soon found out of his impersonation. They cut him into

pieces and shot the remains from a cannon towards Poland.

After the false Dmitri a civil war followed. Vasilii Shuiskii was declared Tsar, but he was unpopular in Russia. Many of Dmitry’s supporters were Polish and their massacre in

1606 triggered the Polish joining in the civil war. The Polish invaved Russia and took over Moscow. That same year

people became anti-Polish in Russia. The Poles were forced to leave from most of Russia. After more complications both sides were finally ready for a truce.
