…Continued from page 1 Commodore Mercury and Santana-22 Nationals on August 11 to 13. We had 22 Mercury’s and 17 Santana-22’s competing. The list is too long to thank all those who helped, but I have to thank Dan Thacker who almost single-handedly organized the S-22 Nationals, and Jack McAleer who took care of the Mercury fleet. Dick Clark took care of Race Committee duties and the action on the water was very impressive. Jerry Mayo and his staff pulled out all the stops to make this event successful. Congratulations to Nick Ward and Charlie Kurtman who both skippered their boats to places in the S-22 fleet. Jack McAleer placed third in the Mercury fleet. Unfortunately race committee duties have been slipping on Wednesday evenings. While the Sunset Series is a lighthearted event, most competitors do expect race committee to do a decent job as this makes the experience more pleasant. Also Wednesday night race committee duties should be looked at as an opportunity to practice for the regular series races. So let’s see some square start lines that are of reasonable length and be diligent in scoring all the finishes correctly. Two additional disturbing occurrences need to be mentioned. Firstly, only club members are allowed behind the bar. Please make sure your guests do not attempt to pour drinks for themselves, or anyone else. Secondly, it is not appropriate to offer drinks to our staff. They have all signed a set of rules which prohibits them from alcohol consumption on the premises, so please do not place them in an awkward situation. Finally I need to remind everyone that the bar is based on an honor system when bartenders are not present. Please fill out the bar tabs correctly. The club is a special place to enjoy a

beverage of your choice, so please do not abuse these privileges. The October Board Meeting will be a General Meeting. At this meeting the plans for the club expansion will be explained, as well as the current mode of operation concerning the distribution of gratuities. A letter of invitation will shortly be mailed out to all regular members to attend this meeting on October 19th. I don’t know about you, but I am not looking forward to the approaching shorter days and end of the Wednesday night series. So in the meantime lets get as much sailing in as possible!

UNCORKED Jerry Stratton Where did summer go? It seems like we just started Wednesday BBQ's for a hundred, and here we are in our last month of Sunset Series racing! Many new faces have been around the YC crewing or greeting returning sailors every Wednesday. Take the opportunity to invite any interested sailors or greeters to join our Club. That way we can keep our costs in check by expanding the member base, plus the new members get a chance to see the YC in less chaotic conditions than the Wednesday evening frenzy. Ms. Juli, Brad and I will do a wine tasting in October, likely the first Friday. Mark it down now and be sure to invite a guest or two to see how intense our voting gets! I promise all eight wines will be better than any options you have in November! I must apologize for my recurring absence from the YC these past weeks, but by the time you read this I will have completed successful back surgery to repair a ruptured disc and three herniated discs, and I'll be well on the road to recovery. I guarantee that I'll be 100% for our Harvest Dinner on Saturday, November 4, where you will have the opportunity to buy wonderful wines during the after-dinner auction with all proceeds going to our junior program. See you at the Club!

******** VNA Regatta 2006 Mitch Matthews The third annual Benefit on the Bay for VNA will be taking place on Saturday October 7th. The MPYC race schedule had it listed as Saturday and Sunday but it will only be on Saturday. This has been one of the VNA’s most successful fundraising events for the past

three years running. It owes much of this success to the members of Monterey Peninsula Yacht Club, the management and board. The Visiting Nurse Association is grateful for the relationship that has developed between the organizations. This year promises to be another great time. There are already wonderful auction items that will be available. Our own famous Jerry Stratton will be the auctioneer again this year bringing energy and enthusiasm as only he can. The Luau food is going to be superb as only Jerry Mayo and crew can provide. There is also a raffle for a boat haul-out in the bar if you haven’t seen it yet. It came in handy for one lucky boat owner last year. We are hoping for a strong turn out of boats and good weather has been ordered. The fleets will enjoy a broader mix of ratings to sail against. I know some the fleets are eager to race against old rivals so this will provide an opportunity to back up some of the talk. There will be three fleets this year: PHRF A, B, and C fleets. The Shields will be given a standard rating accepted by the fleet captain and regional ratings. Any other boats wishing to race but not carrying a current PHRF certificate will be allowed to race with regional ratings that are generally accepted for their class of vessel. We want to encourage as much participation as possible. There will be three races that will go off very quickly. This year we will be honored to have our own Joe Headley and the good ship “OPA” available as a spectator boat to the race. There will be limited availability for the luxury cruise so if your interested, sign up quickly as it’s sure to be fun. Of course the bar will be open immediately after the race. Racing invitations have been sent out. If you or someone you know is interested and did …Continued on page 5

Maybe, the 2006 Santana 22 Champion

Santana 22 Nationals a Great Success! Meryle Sachs

WOW. Four days, 2 dinners, 2 continental breakfasts, 17 boats, 1 practice race, 5 counted races, 5 trophies, and lots of activity at the club while hosting two national regattas—Santana 22s and Mercurys -- on the same weekend! The weather was beautiful on Thursday when the first boats arrived, a bit foggy the next three mornings, but cleared on the bay each afternoon until Sunday when it became gorgeous again. The wind was about 10-15 knots each afternoon providing perfect sailing conditions. The fleet consisted of 15 older boats and 2 of the newer (after 2000) Santana 22s. We are all very proud of our first place winner, Ernest Rideout, who is 88 years old and had the oldest boat, “Maybe.” Kudos to Ernie. He gives us all hope. Second place went to Michael Andrews on Bonito, one of the newer boats. Our own Nick Ward and crew on Cnidarian took 3rd place, Jan Grygier on Carlos sealed 4th place, and Charlie Kurtmen on Leprechaun wrapped up the 5th place trophy. For all the results see Race Results, Specialty Races at www.mpyc.org. It takes a big team to put on one of these regattas—let alone two, and many club members volunteered their time and expertise for this event. Thanks to Dan Thacker for taking on the job of Santana 22 Fleet #12 Captain, and assuming responsibility for all the race notifications, entry forms, early registrations, trophies, participation glasses, regatta shirts, donations from sponsors, harbor arrangements, and other communications. Great job Dan. …Continued on page 6

…Continued from Santanas page 5 To successfully host two national regattas we needed a crack race committee, and we sure had one. The races ran smoothly under the expert guidance of Dick Clark, many-time Mercury Nationals Champion, and our wonderful Commodore Garth Hobson. Thankfully they had a lot of help. On the Race Committee boat we had Jim Womble, Judy Clark and her friend, Sam Fleetwood, and Jim Taylor from the St. Francis Yacht Club. Thank you to everyone who helped on the chase boats Friday, Saturday and Sunday: Jack Allen, Paul Clifford, Sharon and Steve Halvorsen, Lauren Hobson, Jim Paoletti, Kit Ruck, Johh Ruck, Keeley Scates, Matt Seidenzahl, Tom Smith, and Art Sutton. We also need to thank Vic Carder for managing the boat yard with all the trailers, and for measuring an unexpected number of new sails from Friday afternoon until well into the dinner hour. I was delighted to help and learn about this arcane science. Much appreciation goes to Matt and Alex Seidenzahl for creating outstanding regatta shirts, including the very popular women’s version! Thanks also to Ron Baxter and Robin for providing an outstanding

Santanas at the mark continental breakfast on Saturday morning and Sunday. And, I might as well give myself a pat on the back for helping register boats, sell T-shirts, and escort boat owners to the harbormaster’s office for slips on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday morning. This regatta was complete with prizes and donations from sponsors. Many thanks to John Hearn of UK Sails for donating beautiful sailing bags, hats, belts, and shirts to each of the 5 trophy winners. And most importantly, the donation of a certificate for 50% off new U.K Sails to the 1st place winner! We also want to thank Pineapple Sails and Santa Cruz Sails for their generous donations to the beer supply. With two regattas occurring together, tie-ups at the Yacht Club were at a premium. Thanks very much to Scott Pryor and the folks in the Harbormaster’s office for setting up all the out-of-town participants with slips, parking permits, and marina keys. Thanks to Charlie Kurtmen for letting us put 3 boats in his slip! And how did all those boats get into and out of the water? Not without help from Jack McAleer, Steve Kraft, Dick Clark, and David Addleman on the hoist, but most of …Continued on page 7

…Continued from Santanas page 6 all, Bob Furney and David Duncan, who on Sunday pulled 37 boats out of the water! We would be remiss if we did not mention the incredible job Jerry Mayo and our club staff did during these regattas, putting on 104 dinners on Saturday night alone. Some of these were 12-hour days for Jerry, with Jose, Samuel, and Josefa in the kitchen, Tristan and Natalie at the bar, and Donna, Darlene and Rowena serving. We really do have a wonderful staff at our club. At the annual SODA (Santana 22 One Design Association) meeting after the award ceremony on Sunday, it was decided that the 2007 Santana 22 Nationals will be in the San Francisco Bay area. We look forward to hosting this event again in the future.

…Continued from Mercury page 1 followed closely by Davis. Fifth place went to Chris and Jeffrey Lanzafame, sailing together for the first time in a while. Pat Bradley won the Ray Johnson Perpetual trophy for first place of the first race of the nationals. Race two saw McAleer take the pin end along with Dave West with Chris Kreuger looking for that first southerly shift. They got their shift and were gone. They held their lead downwind with McAleer still leading at the second weather mark. The fleet compressed going downwind with Baird passing West. McAleer held the lead to the finish followed by Baird and West in third. Pat Bradley passed Davis going to the finish capturing the fourth spot. Davis was fifth. Jack McAleer won the Park and Lynn Densmore Perpetual Trophy for the winner of the second race of the nationals. McAleer and Baird were tied for the lead with four points followed closely by Bradley with five points after two races. Race three was started in 5-10 knots of wind with very confusing seas and 20-30 degree wind shifts on the double sausage course. The first weather mark was very crowded, but as the run developed, the same group was there, Baird, Pat Bradley, Davis, with new crew Dave Morris, and McAleer. This group changed places and on the beat to the second weather mark. Bradley, who had slipped to fourth, went deep to the left and was first at the second weather mark. However Baird passed Bradley on the run. With Davis and McAleer right behind him, Bradley split off on a downer and Davis covered him. McAleer went after Baird, but Baird won by about an inch and McAleer got second. Davis did beat Bradley. Steve Kraft with Marty Gingras, sailing their best race of the series, got the fifth spot. …Continued from Mercurys page 7 Baird won the Mimi and Matt Jenkins Perpetual Trophy for the winner of the third race of the nationals. Race four still had the confused sea, but the breeze was on the high side of the velocity range and were very shifty. John Hansen with Sutter Schumacher were going very fast. Hansen gave Baird and McAleer all they could handle. Hansen held on until the last leg to the finish. Pat Bradley was making his move and he followed Baird with a second place. McAleer was third followed by Hansen. Mike Burch with Jeff Messano, sailing their best race of the series, grabbed the fifth spot. Baird won the Holden Sanford Perpetual Trophy for the winner of the fourth race of the nationals. Baird was leading the series with 6 points, McAleer with 9 and Bradley with 11. Race five was started 6- 8 knots of shifty breezes from the Southwest, but a smoother sea than the previous days. At the first weather mark of the triple sausage course, Baird led McAleer followed by Eric and Tracy Conn and Davis. Baird led for the entire race. Conn sailing very well downwind was second at the leeward mark. For the next two legs the race developed between Conn, McAleer, Davis and Bradley. Bradley pulled ahead on the third weather leg. Davis and McAleer got by Conn and battled to the finish with Davis getting the third followed by McAleer and West. Baird won the John Koenig Perpetual Trophy for the winner of the fifth race of the nationals. Doug Baird won the National Championship in convincing style with only 7 points, winning three races. Bradley and McAleer tied for second with Bradley getting the tiebreaker with13 points. Davis was fourth with 22 points followed by West, in fifth, with 37 points.

The "B" fleet was won by Dan Simmons and Phil Macafee with 48 points and in sixth place overall in the fleet. This graduates Dan out of the "B" fleet as his sixth place overall put him in the upper third of the fleet in the nationals, which is dictated by the rules of the MCYRA. Geordy Hershman and Mark Commings were second with 50 points. Third place went to Eric and Tracy Conn with 51 points. Mercury number one raced, but on day two broke a boom and retired. JJ Jenks-Bunn was racing the family yacht. Many thanks go to Joni and Chip Wood for a great party at their home on Friday night. The food, the drink and the chocolate chip cookies were absolutely fabulous. The dinner Saturday night at the MPYC and the goodies at the trophy were excellent. The credit goes to Dick Clark for organizing the regatta and dove tailing in with the Santana 22 nationals. No problems on the water or at the hoist or around the club. Great job Dick. The scoring will be posted on the website today. www.mercury-sail.com

Racing Ron Baxter What a month of sailing! My thoughts go out to all those many sailing widows and widowers who have started to feel abandon while their spouses have been out sailing day in and day out for low these many months. I know my wife still recognizes me, but she had to look twice a few times so I know from personal experience what sailing can do to a relationship. But hey, don’t they say that absence makes the heart grow fonder? Well this sailor certainly hopes so, in any case the months of frantic racing schedules are drawing to a close as we wind up the summer months at MPYC. Speaking of racing, just in case you don’t remember this month MPYC hosted the First ever Ocean race, the Santana 22 and Mercury Nationals, PHRF Summer III, One Design summer 5 and 6, as well as 4 Wednesday night races; now that’s a lot of sailing! On July 30th MPYC hosted its inaugural Ocean Race which is part of a new ocean series that includes the Lefler race and the Commodore’s Regatta. The format for the series was simple, two fleets split at a PHRF rating of 100, two coastal races, and one long grueling Ocean race. Well that was the theory in any case. In reality it was not as well attended as hoped with no A-Fleet boats committing to racing the 56 mile open ocean race course John Ruck proposed. As it turned out 3 B-Fleet boats, Krash, Blue Bayou, and Seldom Seen, set out to sail the much shorter 26 mile B-Fleet course to MBARI research buoy M1 and back. With so few boats entering, and with only Krash having raced either of the other two races it was decided that this inaugural event would be winner take all in hopes of keeping the competition keen. With this in mind the three of us set out in light wind and the flat water which provided a slow but beautiful

day for sailing; well, that is up until the lightening started! Yes that’s right, lightening on the bay in July. Who would have thought? Luckily the storm clouds passed without incident and even provided a bit more wind for a reach home from MBARI. All in all I had a great time and I am sure the other skippers did also. I know for a fact the Blue Bayou’s crew was having fun as they hula danced on the rail when they passed us down wind just after rounding MBARI. Nice crew work Rick, but next time hula skirts would make it that much more entertaining! Back at the club it was Krash in first, Blue Bayou second and Seldom Seen finishing third. On August 11th through 13th MPYC sponsored both the Santana 22 and Mercury Nationals. The turn out was fantastic with over 40 boats participating in the two class event. Special thanks to a crack race committee who did an awesome job and to our excellent staff both of whom really made the event work. Thanks again to all the volunteers. For further details see the articles in this issue. As August was coming to an end so was the summer PHRF series and last month we saw the final two summer series races with some surprising results. In A-Fleet it was Bustin Loose breaking free with two bullets followed closely by series leader Athena with 2 second place finishes. Luckily for Athena the 2 point difference for the day was not enough to knock her out of first place resulting in her first ever series title! Well done Paul and crew. In B-Fleet it was the mighty Carnaval who captured first place in race 5 followed by the ever present Heart of Gold in second and Mas Rapido in third. In the second race, however, light and variable wind shook things up leading to a dramatic shift in series totals as Pretender …Continued on page 10

…Continued from Racing page 9 captured 1st followed by Heart of Gold in second and Redux in third. Series leader Carnaval, who, with their first place finish in race 5 for a total of 7 points going into the last race seem a sure bet to win the series but was denied a podium finish and ended up in 8th place. When the dust settled it was Heart of Gold winning the summer PHRF B-Fleet with a total of 12 points followed by Carnaval with 15 in second and Pretender in third with a 19 point total. In C-Fleet it was match racing with only Krash and Santy Anno answering the call to sail. With only one point separating the two it was anybodies game going into the final two races, but in the end it was Santy Anno who prevailed as Krash won the first race and Santy Anno won the second giving Santy Anno a one point victory for the Summer Series. Well done Greg! Summer One Design 5 and 6 was well attended with 14 boats in three fleets. In the J-22 class it was a day of close racing with Toucan, Travieso, and Trinity all finishing the day with 4 points each allowing Travieso to capture the series victory with 13 points followed by Toucan with 16 points and 2 bullets in second winning on a tie beaker over Fleeboflam. In the Shields class it was 7 race series with 3 races raced during Summer One Design 5 and 6 (yah I couldn’t figure that out either!). In races 5 and 6 it was Stillwater in first followed by October in second and Carol in third. In race 7 it was October in first followed by Stillwater in second and Carol in third. Unfortunately for our fearless commodore his 4 points for the day was not enough to secure a series victory as October had exactly the same finishes over the series and won on the tie breaking last race to capture the Shields Summer Series win. Wow that’s close racing! In the Santana 22 class it was an exciting day of close racing with Krash

taking two bullets, followed by Santy Anno with two second place finishes with Mizzen rounding out third in the first race and Cnidarian in third in the second race. Back at the club it was Mizzen who won their first One Design Series Title besting Cnidarian by a mere two points. Third place honors goes to your truly Krash finishing three points out. Congratulations Vic, Jeff and Mizzen Crew, a job well done! As for the Wednesday night series what can I say? The sailing has been great even with the shorter days. I guess the only thing you have to question there is what the hell are the race committees thinking?!? Now not all race committees have had problems, but there have been some doozies, including, and I kid you not, writing down all the finish times but forgetting to equate them with boats! What a fiasco! And that’s just the start! All in all I think we all need to make sure we raise the level of our commitment to race committee duties both on Wednesday and the weekend. That brings me to another related topic, the Race Committee achievement award sponsored by Jeff Pullford. If you didn’t read it in last months Tiller Jeff has graciously donated funds for 4 jackets to be awarded annually to outstanding race committee personal as well as a perpetual trophy to be awarded at the Commodore’s Ball. I am pleased to announce that we have given the first award to Meryle Sachs for her help with the scoring program and the web site posting. Congratulations Meryle you definitely deserved the award and thanks again for all your help. Well that’s pretty much it. Remember we still have fall sailing and a few Wednesday nights left so get out there, enjoy yourselves, be safe and I’ll see you on the water.

Island Cruising Roger Born Can you imagine Monterey Bay filled with 172 tree-covered, sparsely populated islands? What a sailor’s paradise that would be. That’s the San Juan Islands in Northwest Washington! Then beyond the San Juan’s are the Canadian Gulf Islands: weeks can be spent cruising these islands. Patti and I moved up here a year ago to explore the islands, poke around this side of Canada, ski, and visit relatives. To become integrated into the marine community I took a position as Fleet Captain with Anacortes Yacht Charters (AYC). My fleet consists of eight sailboats including a Bristol Channel Cutter, a Catalina 30, a Bavaria 36, a Pearson 34, three Beneteau 36’s, and a Nauticat 44 motor-sailor. The work includes checking out charters to assure they are competent sailors, checking in the boat at the end of the charter noting problems, and communicating with boat owners. AYC owns none of the boats. It’s a way to buy a boat and have others pay for it. As part of the job I have made several trips through the islands. Some favorite islands are Cypress Island, Sucia Island, and Stewart Island. Cypress has several anchorages, some with mooring

balls. There are a number of eagles nesting here. Sucia has multiple bays and coves, a haven for smuggling in years past. Wind, rain, and waves continue to sculpt the shoreline creating unusual shapes. Stewart has some fine harbors and is the jumping off point for Canada. All three islands are largely Washington State Park land with many hiking trails. Some are easy, some not so easy. Favorite harbors are Friday, Roach, and Rosario. Rosario was a mansion built by a lumber-baron, now converted to a resort. A ‘wish it was mine’ place. Roach Harbor was a lime-kiln town with many of the old kilns still in evidence. In recent years it has added a fabulous walking sculpture garden (you do the walking; the sculptures are stationary). Friday Harbor is the Carmel of the San Juan Islands. You don’t want to miss the small city of Victoria, capital of British Columbia, Canada. It’s on the Southern tip of Vancouver Island. Victoria is quaint yet modern and very interesting. You can wander for an afternoon and never get bored. The famous Buchart Gardens are a few miles North of town. Come up in twos, threes, or as a flotilla of more boats - stop in and say hello.

Looking southwest, the islands are Burrows on the left, Lopez in center, and Anacortes’

Washington Park on right. Anacortes Skyline Marina is in the foreground.
