Amazed
One of the most poignant and honest statements in scripture is found in Mark 9:24, "I
believe; help me overcome my unbelief!" These honest words of faith are proclaimed by a
desperate father who is pleading with Jesus for his son’s healing. He says to Jesus, "If you
can do anything, please take pity on us and help us." To which Jesus responds, "If you can?
Everything is possible for the one who believes." It is then that the boy’s father exclaims, "I
do believe; help me overcome my unbelief!"
Most of us at one time or another have professed our belief in God and our belief in Jesus
as the Son of God. Few of us, however, have shared our moments of unbelief or moments
when we wanted desperately to believe what seems unbelievable. I suspect that few of us
have ever felt the freedom to utter the word unbelief in church out of fear that our faith
would be seen as weak, troubled, or misguided. In fact, many of us can recall a time when
any attempt at questioning faith was looked upon with suspicion and pity rather than being
seen as a healthy part of the faith journey.
So the two questions I pose to each of you are, What do you believe? and What do you
struggle to believe?
Over the next few months we will embark on a journey in the Gospel of Mark where we
will consider the amazing ministry of Jesus and the amazing journey of becoming a believer.
During this amazing journey, we will celebrate what we believe, in whom we believe, why
we believe, what we struggle to believe, and what it means to be a community of believers.
We are told again and again in Mark's Gospel that when Jesus taught or healed the people
were amazed; thus the title of this series is AMAZED. So come be AMAZED as we allow
Jesus to show us that everything is possible for the one who believes.

Lauren Evans Celebrates 1st Anniversary Lauren began her ministry with us as a part-time interim last fall. It did not take long to see the blessing that God had given us through Lauren’s ministry. She is a loving, caring, and sweet person who creates meaning ministry experiences for our children. Lauren has a desire to see young families grow together spiritually not only through their connections at church but also in their lives at home. She brightens any room with her smile, personality, and deep spiritual walk. We are blessed to have such a gifted young woman on staff as our full time Director of Family Ministries. We look forward to celebrating her journey with us and the evidence of her gifts as we license her to the ministry on Sunday, September 8.
FBC Celebrates Five Years of Casey Callahan's Faithful Ministry
For the past five years, First Baptist Clemson has been blessed by Casey's ministry with our college students and his leadership with missions. In addition, Casey has served as our default "go to guy" for many of our computer/digital/technical needs. More recently, Casey has taken on responsibility for adult spiritual formation which draws upon his love for learning and mentoring people in faith. Please find a moment to express your appreciation to Casey for his faithful ministry and to his wife Martha Ann and their son Brennen for their support of Casey and their love for this church.

The REPORT CARD is in from our church-wide Summer School Project: Congratulations – you’ve all passed!
Assignment 1: Paper Products for Connie Maxwell Children’s Home…we collected just enough plates, napkins, toilet paper, and other essential items to fill up an entire car (barely a square inch to spare!). Virgil and Judy Quisenberry delivered these to the main children’s home, located Greenwood, SC. To learn more, visit www.conniemaxwell.com.
Recap of our summer assignments:
Assignment 2: Kid-Friendly Food Products…at the end of this assignment, our large collection bin was overflowing with food items that will help nourish some of the 1,000 homeless/housing-insecure children currently identified in Pickens County. They will be delivered through case workers who will work to ensure children can receive them with care and dignity.
Assignment 3: Backpacks & School Supplies…On FBC
Promotion Sunday (Aug 18), with many of our children
wearing their own backpacks, we lined the 55+ donated
backpacks filled with new supplies and offered a prayer of
blessing for them, and more importantly, for the children
upon whose shoulders they will soon rest. Along with the
food products, these backpacks will find precious children in
Pickens County.

First Baptist Church of Clemson Intercessory Prayer Ministry
On September 22nd, Prayer Intercessors will celebrates three plus years of ministry at FBC Clemson with a Prayer Intercessor Luncheon. This will be a time of:
Praising God and giving Him Glory for the things He has done. Celebrating Intercessors with a heart for Prayer who faithfully lift up the needs
of others. Offering Thanksgiving to God for His blessings upon those for whom we have
prayed. Thanking God for giving us visible evidence of how he is working through our
prayers and also ways he is working that we cannot see and may never see.
Mission of Intercessory Prayer Ministry: Reach out to those in need through personal prayer and encouragement. Bring to God through Christ, concerns of our congregation, city, state, nation,
and world. Enhance the Prayer Life of Individuals, Couples, and Families.
During this month you will be hearing more about this ministry and ways
you can participate.
*All classes will run from September 18–October 23. Copies of books will be available for $5. Space is limited to 20 participants per class,
with signups opening on Wednesday, September 11th.
Midweek @ FBC begins September 4th with a “Show & Tell” in the FLC immediately following dinner. All adults are encouraged to come with some resource in mind that has brought spiritual encouragement and inspiration, preferably something encountered over the summer (e.g., book, podcast, article, artwork). Alternatively, adults can share of a recent inspirational experience (e.g., trip, worship, conversation).

On Sunday, July 28th, Ed and Becky Jo Clark hosted a picnic by
the lake—only there were so many people signed up, it was
moved it to the FLC. A great time was had by all! Thank you Ed
and Becky Jo!
On Tuesday, August 13th, we had a wonderful stroll through Clemson Forest guided by our own Jerry Redmond. We
spent an hour and a half walking the trails, identifying plant life and viewing a
beautiful waterfall.
Thursday, July 11, the group had a great lunch/shopping experience
at A Day in the Country before enjoying the wonderful humor of Scott Treadway in the Downtown
Flatrock Playhouse’s The Big Bang.

U18 Fall Mission Focus Operation Christmas Child
What an amazing response we had to our Summer School Mission Project that supported children in and around local communities! But, our call to serve others is ongoing, and we now look to our U18 Fall Mission Focus to support children all around the world through Samaritan’s Purse Operation Christmas Child. All children, preteen, youth, and families are encouraged to begin collecting and donating items for this wonderful mission opportunity. In early November, we will have a packing party to pack all of the collected items into shoeboxes, and send them off to be delivered to children across the world.
Here’s a list of what to bring for the month of September:
Anytime: Shoeboxes (empty shoe box--standard size, in durable condition, or a small plastic container.)
September 1st-14th: School Supplies (pens, pencils and sharpeners, crayons or markers,
stamps and ink pad sets, writing pads or paper, solar calculators, coloring and picture books, etc.)
September 15th-28th: Hygiene Items (toothbrush, tooth paste, mild soap bar, comb, washcloth, etc.)
(Please do not send damaged or used items; war-related items such as toy guns,
knives or military figures; chocolate or food; out-of-date candy; liquids or lotions; medications or vitamins;
breakable items such as snow globes or glass containers; aerosol cans)

We begin our year learning about missionaries that are willing to take risks to serve God. Mamie Oliver ministers to a community in Boise, Idaho. Nine year old Ellie Smith started “The Happy Wagon Company” to buy wagons for a local children’s hospital. Linda Cross works at the Baptist University of the Americas to help pastors get the help they need for churches in Latin America. Lastly, Chip Rotolo helps with a swimming program in Helena, Arkansas and with African refugees in Uganda. Our Mission Friends will study how all of these people answered God’s call to help others even when it was difficult. We will also share ways we can help others.

Our next 5th Sunday Fellowship is on September 29. It's called Bells, Hymns,
and Barbeque! Bells: Children (grades 1-4) are invited to meet at the church
at 4:45pm and walk to Clemson campus for the "Music in the Air XI Carillon
Concert." Gail Marion will lead the group in learning about the bells. After
the concert, the children will return to the church for a barbeque
meal. Hymns: Everyone is invited to meet in the Family Life Center at
5:00pm for a good old fashion Hymn Sing with an added twist of new songs
as well. We will sing some good old hymns and some brand new songs as a
part of our time of fellowship together. Barbeque: After our times of music,
we will all enjoy a great barbeque meal together at 6:00pm. Plan to bring
a guest with you.
Music Ministry Gearing Up for the Fall
Leadership is being enlisted and plans are being made for our Fall Music Ministry at FBC Clemson. On Sundays, beginning September 8, there will be music and worship opportunities for children and youth. All adults are invited to be a part of the Chancel Choir which leads in worship each Sunday morning. Rehearsals are at 7:00pm on Wednesdays. There are no auditions are attendance requirements, just a love for singing. For youth and adults interested in playing handbells, look for information soon.

Let there be light!
Many tourists have visited the cathedrals designed by Sir Christopher Wren in the 1600s. The stately steeples are a visible trademark of his creations. But have you ever noticed that these great structures lack the magnificent stained glass windows contained in other cathedrals? Wren felt that “God’s greatest gift to man is light.” Thus, while being surrounded by the physical glow of God’s love, people could worship the Son as the Light of the World, celebrating these wondrous Gifts. While there are many references involving light in the Bible – the Word as a light to our paths, provided by bridesmaids for a wedding feast, on a hill instead of under a basket, et al. – today we are barely aware of turning light switches on when we enter a room. Even that small act can involve stewardship of our earth’s resources. Now we have many choices as to which sort of light bulb to use for which purpose, and our choices can involve both stewardship of resources and of money. Traditional incandescent bulbs produce true light and cost the least. They can also be more appealing to the eye, as with flickering candle-like ones in chandeliers. Unfortunately, they also create more heat and do not last very long. The oddly-shaped compact fluorescent bulbs (CFL) last up to 10 times longer and produce less heat than incandescent bulbs. However, they do cost more initially. The major drawback of these bulbs is that they contain a toxic powder, and as such would technically require professional cleanup if one breaks in your house. This powder contains mercury, so the bulbs must be disposed of properly, not merely tossed into the trash. These bulbs cannot be used in cold-weather regions. The most recent entry into the field is the light-emitting diode (LED) light. While the initial designs only sent the light in one direction, up or down depending on placement, the newer models use multiple small diodes to better disperse the light. The newest CREE type has extremely bright light, and designs are improving. These bulbs can last 15 years, but they do cost more initially. They do not create much heat, nor do they require special methods of disposal. Even with the long life, LED bulbs still tend to lose brightness over time, due to voltage fluctuations. So, it is up to us to choose wisely. Each illumination situation has specific needs – and we Christians have been blessed with God’s light IN the world and His Light OF the World.
