EthicsDaily.com, the e-newsletter of the Baptist Center for Ethics in Nashville, Tennessee regularly features articles by Martin E. Marty. A couple of weeks ago, Marty wrote a piece entitled, “Why Pastors Will Suffer Fools Gladly.” The title itself intrigued me, and as I read the column realized that Marty himself was bouncing some ideas off a piece that David Brooks had written in The New York Times. Just goes to show that not all ideas are original with those who write about them, and are often inspired by other sources. I quickly resonated with what Dr. Marty (and Brooks) said. So, I thought I might ruminate a bit on his comments and let you read
over my shoulder. Dr. Marty recalls his years when he served as a parish minister (most of his career was spent in teaching, writing, and lecturing). Much of his time as a pastor, he says, was spent appearing and speaking up “at school boards, zoning boards, hospital boards, housing boards, divorce courts, adoption agencies, and more.” In other words, he was involved in the lives of his congregational participants, or as he puts it, “the public worlds” of those who were engaged in church. That is certainly typical of most pastors I know, especially those who don’t sequester themselves in their offices, but emerge into the sunlight of the community in which they live and work. There are those occasions, Marty admits, that while being involved in the lives of their parishioners, pastors might or might not have much patience “with those to whom one is tempted to be impolite – and worse.” He quotes Brooks, who is a newspaper columnist, remember: “I don't give myself high marks on suffering fools. I’m not rude to those I consider foolish, but I strenuously and lamentably evade them. But I do see people who handle fools well. Many members of the clergy do, as do many great teachers.” Hmm. “Suffering fools,” Marty says, “does not mean being soft and sentimental. Pastors can be harsh and judgmental articulators of law.” And then he offers a testimony. “But, when in 1963 I moved from parish ministry to the professorship, my dean and friend ‘Jerry’ Brauer said, ‘Marty, there is a difference in your new role. Good professors have to flunk some people; good pastors never do.’” Marty took him to mean that pastors are taught (it is not a natural behavior, believe me) “to see people, foolish people, from a different perspective than they naturally would.” And then he offers an example. “I once wanted to provide a character reference to an arrested church member, who was of good character. His lawyer said, ‘The judge will ignore what you say. Clergy are 'soft' when character-referencing. They know evil, but they find the good, and that does not help in court.’” Marty’s response? Dismiss “the institutional church” and its ministers, if you will, but, if Brooks is right, you will not have fewer fools. You will likely find more people abandoned, often unjustly, in an impersonal world where someone, someone, should not lose patience or become impolite and dismissive. I would add, hastily, that suffering fools is not the sole domain of the pastor. Jesus encouraged all those who follow him to do the same, just as he did. In his case, the fools were also those he referred to as “the least of these.” Those Jesus did not suffer well were, ironically – and yep, you guessed it – the clergy.
Thanks for your faithfulness in Sunday morning Bible study and worship! We have continued to have good attendance during the chilly
Sundays of January. Thank you for wanting to be with your church family each week, and for being faithful to attend.
Secret Pals and Pals, we hope you have placed your order for baked goods, candy and other treats as an option for a gift this year at the party, February 9. All proceeds go to support the Arkansas Hunger Alliance and the No Kid Hungry campaign. Your Ministry and Missions Team is concerned about the high rate of childhood hunger in Arkansas, so wanted to make this our priority for the first quarter of the Centennial year. Contact Harriett Phillips with your order by February 1. Her email is [email protected]. Saturday, March 30, will be a second bake sale, sponsored again by Ministry and Missions. This sale will be an opportunity for bakers church-wide to make something to sell at the bake sale at the Hillcrest Farmers Market. We are hoping for a huge response---both baked items and proceeds! Be thinking ahead and planning to participate, please. Have some fun with this! Get together with some friends to have a baking party---cookies, candy, cupcakes, pies, cakes! Speaking of the farmers market, we are having an outstanding response to our Winter Market. We are the only year-round market that we know about, and our farmers and shoppers are very pleased to have this opportunity to shop and sell. Last Saturday we had 10 farmers/vendors at market with a beautiful array of lettuce, greens, beets, carrots, kohlrabi, onions, pecans, eggs, cheese, meat---you name it! Come see your church in action! Sunday, February 10, at 9 AM in the recreation hall, our Children's Ministry Team will provide a Valentine Breakfast for children and families. This has become something of an annual event and a joy for all. The breakfast will be completed in time for parents to get to their classes at 9:30 AM. The children will stay for class time and hear stories about God's love and make valentines. Don't miss this fun! As we move into February, we also anticipate the annual Martha Stearns Marshall month of Baptist women in preaching. I am thankful to serve in a Baptist church where women serve in many capacities, including pastoral staff. God is good! March 3 is Marathon Sunday, so look ahead to that as well and plan to attend. Parents, please encourage your children of all ages to participate in the Second Annual Kid's Fun Run along our sidewalk that day! Blessings, Carolyn
