The Three Holy Days
of Christendom
Holy Week 2018
The Triduum (TRID-oo-um, “three
days”) refers to the time from worship on
Maundy Thursday until the final worship of
Easter Day. The “Three Holy Days” of the
passion and resurrection of Christ is the
culmination of the entire church year. It is
over these days – Maundy Thursday, Good
Friday, Easter – that we celebrate God’s
redeeming love in the dying and rising of
his Son, Jesus, and still see that love today.
The Triduum is a single celebration. Once
we have begun the Triduum on Maundy
Thursday, we do not “leave” it until Easter
Sunday. It is one continuous celebration of
dying and rising, with Christ. Thus this
booklet. It contains as one liturgy our
corporate worship life during the Three
Holy Days of 2018.

Welcome! We thank God
that you have joined us at
worship today. Restrooms
are located in the basement.
Hearing loop headphones
and Large Print Hymnals are

Today we gather together
in the presence of God. He is
present among us in a
special way through his
Word and Sacrament. We
humbly acknowledge our sin
and rejoice in the good news
of forgiveness through the
life and death of Christ. This
is the focus of our worship.

Easter Festival Worship April 1, 2018
The Festival of the Resurrection of Our Lord is the high point of the Christian Church Year. We celebrate Christ’s victory over death that is ours by faith. The Paschal Candle, as a symbolic reminder of the risen Christ, helps us to celebrate the fact that the darkness of sin and death has been overcome by the resurrection. The Paschal candle
will burn throughout the Easter season until Ascension.

both now and in eternity. But I am truly sorry for my sins, and trusting in
my Savior Jesus Christ, I pray: Lord, have mercy on me, a sinner.
M: God our heavenly Father, has been merciful to us and has given his only Son to be
the atoning sacrifice for our sins. Therefore, as a called servant of Christ and by his
authority, I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son and of
the Holy Spirit.
C: Amen.

PRAYER OF THE DAY M: Let us pray.
Almighty God, by the glorious resurrection of your Son Jesus Christ you conquered
death and opened the gate to eternal life. Grant that we, who have been raised with
him through baptism, may walk in newness of life and ever rejoice in the hope of
sharing his glory; through Jesus Christ our Lord, to whom, with you and the Holy
Spirit be dominion and praise now and forever.

THE WORD
CHOIR The Lord Is Risen
FIRST LESSON Isaiah 25:6-9 What is the shroud that covers all people and the sheet that covers the nations? Is it not the futility of history and of life itself, all of which ends in death and decay for individuals, for nations, for all institutions and all they build and hold dear? Is it not the fear that the disgrace of our vain existence and the folly of our struggles for life, for honor, for this and that will all be revealed in our death? Looked at apart from Christ we fear the shroud of death. We fear it if we think it ends all, and we fear it even more if we suspect that it doesn’t end all. Ah, but now is Christ risen! Now life makes sense and so does history. Life and history come from God and he gives and uses them, so that he can prepare a banquet for us, a banquet of life eternal. Fear is not our lot and death is not our goal! He is! As we are his, so he is ours! And in his work for us, he does not disappoint. What a day! He is risen! He is risen indeed! This is the LORD, we trusted in him; let us rejoice and be glad in his salvation!
44
6 On this mountain the LORD Almighty will prepare
a feast of rich food for all peoples,
a banquet of aged wine—
the best of meats and the finest of wines. 7 On this mountain he will destroy
the shroud that enfolds all peoples,
the sheet that covers all nations; 8 he will swallow up death forever.
The Sovereign LORD will wipe away the tears
from all faces;
he will remove his people’s disgrace
from all the earth.
The LORD has spoken.
9 In that day they will say,
“Surely this is our God;
we trusted in him, and he saved us.
This is the LORD, we trusted in him;
let us rejoice and be glad in his salvation.” (NIV)
PSALM OF THE DAY Psalm 118 (Page 57 CWS)
SECOND LESSON 1 Corinthians 15:19-26 If death was all that we had to look forward to, then we would be miserable indeed. We would have reason to fear that our whole life was in vain and the endurance of every struggle or temptation a wasted effort. If death ends all, why struggle, why sacrifice, why endure opposition and persecution especially from our own flesh in its fight with sins and temptations? But death does not end all. Death, feared by all, has now fallen victim to Christ in his resurrection; he has conquered it for us! We will rise. We will see him as he is. We will spend eternity not in dust but in adoration. That’s why he came. That’s why he died. That’s why we are so glad on this most holy day of days. Therefore do not be afraid of life. Fear death even less. For Christ is risen! He is risen indeed! His life is our life, our death is his death, his resurrection and his heaven are our future!
19 If only for this life we have hope in Christ, we are of all people most to be pitied. 20 But Christ has indeed been raised from the dead, the firstfruits of those who have
fallen asleep. 21 For since death came through a man, the resurrection of the dead comes
also through a man. 22 For as in Adam all die, so in Christ all will be made alive. 23 But
each in turn: Christ, the firstfruits; then, when he comes, those who belong to him. 24 Then the end will come, when he hands over the kingdom to God the Father after he
has destroyed all dominion, authority and power. 25 For he must reign until he has put
all his enemies under his feet. 26 The last enemy to be destroyed is death. (NIV)

GOSPEL Mark 16:1-8 What were the women afraid of? It is interesting to note that they have triumphed over all kinds of fears at the beginning of the gospel lesson, but they are overcome by fear at its close, at least temporarily. What do we have to be afraid of? They could have feared the soldiers. We may be afraid of people who hate the church or hate us. They could have been afraid of what they did not understand. We could too, for who grasps the invisible power of God or understands death and clearly “sees” what follows it? They could have been afraid of God, calling to mind their own earlier sins and doubts. We surely can sympathize with them in that! But the empty tomb and the angel of the resurrection says to all of our fears, Don’t be afraid! He is risen, just as he promised! Now we can be sure that he will keep all of his promises. For if he kept this one, then nothing will be too hard for him, and nothing will hold him back from his assurance to us of his grace, his protection in life and death, his promise even of our resurrection.
16 When the Sabbath was over, Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James, and
Salome bought spices so that they might go to anoint Jesus’ body. 2 Very early on the
first day of the week, just after sunrise, they were on their way to the tomb3 and they
asked each other, “Who will roll the stone away from the entrance of the tomb?” 4 But when they looked up, they saw that the stone, which was very large, had been
rolled away. 5 As they entered the tomb, they saw a young man dressed in a white robe
sitting on the right side, and they were alarmed. 6 “Don’t be alarmed,” he said. “You are looking for Jesus the Nazarene, who was
crucified. He has risen! He is not here. See the place where they laid him. 7 But go, tell
his disciples and Peter, ‘He is going ahead of you into Galilee. There you will see him,
just as he told you.’” 8 Trembling and bewildered, the women went out and fled from the tomb. They said
nothing to anyone, because they were afraid. (NIV)

NICENE CREED We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty,
maker of heaven and earth,
of all that is,
seen and unseen.
We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God,
eternally begotten of the Father,
God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God,
begotten, not made,
of one being with the Father.
Through him all things were made.
For us and for our salvation, he came down from heaven,
was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary,
and became fully human.
For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate.
He suffered death and was buried.
On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures.
He ascended into heaven
and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead,
and his kingdom will have no end.
We believe in the Holy Spirit,
the Lord, the giver of life,
who proceeds from the Father and the Son,
who in unity with the Father and the Son is worshipped and glorified,
who has spoken through the prophets.
We believe in one holy Christian and apostolic Church.
We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.
We look for the resurrection of the dead
and the life of the world to come. Amen.
OFFERING During the offering, please sign the friendship register in your pew. Thank you!

WORDS OF INSTITUTION M: Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night he was betrayed, took bread; and when he had
given thanks, he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take and eat; this is
my body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.”
Then he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it to them saying, “Drink from it, all of
you; this is my blood of the new covenant, which is poured out for you for the
forgiveness of sins. Do this, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of me.”
M: The peace of the Lord be with you always.

Glorify Gather Grow Go
In the days following the assassination of Presi-
dent Abraham Lincoln, the United States Army con-
ducted one of the largest manhunts our young country
had ever seen. The assassin, John Wilkes Booth, had
managed to make his escape into the countryside.
But the army was determined to get their man. They
left no stone unturned. In fact, in their passion to
bring the president’s killer to justice, fourteen hun-
dred soldiers volunteered to search the swamps of
Maryland. A journalist accompanying those brave men
described the ordeal in this way: “The soldiers were
only a few paces apart and in steady order they took
to the ground as it came, now plunging to their arm-
pits in slime, now attacked by legions of wood ticks,
now attempting some unfaithful log…and plunging to
the tip of the skull in poisonous stagnation. The tree
boughs rent their uniforms. They came out upon dry
land, many of them without a rag of garment,
scratched and gnashed, and spent, repugnant to
themselves, and disgusting to those who saw them.”
Eighty-three soldiers made the ultimate sacrifice. They
died in the swamps of Maryland. We marvel at the
bravery of all those soldiers and respect their devotion
to their slain Commander-in-Chief. While their sacrifice
was immense, it is something that we can under-
stand. These men gave themselves for a worthy
cause.
The journalist’s account of the soldiers’ mission
brings to mind another sacrifice—one we will never be
able to understand—the one made by our Lord Jesus.
He too waded into a swamp of filth. The perfect Son of
God plunged headlong into a world poisoned by our
sin. He waded through the slime of our anger and ha-
tred. His brow was pierced. His flesh was torn. He dis-
gusted all who saw him. “He was despised and reject-
ed by men, a man of sorrows, and familiar with suffer-
ing. Like one from whom men hide their faces he was
despised, and we esteemed him not” (Isaiah 53:3).
There are some striking similarities between Jesus
and the soldiers of the Union Army. But here is where
they all stop. Those soldiers were hunting a killer to
bring him to justice. Jesus, on the other hand, entered
the swamp to save killers, adulterers, liars, and
thieves. He gave himself to save us sinners from the
justice we deserved: “Surely he took up our infirmities
and carried our sorrows, yet we considered him strick-
en by God, smitten by him, and afflicted. 5 But he was
pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our
iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was
upon him, and by his wounds we are healed” (Isaiah
53:4-5). Heaven’s Commander-in-Chief died in devo-
tion to the rebels who killed him. Such love leads us to
marvel with St. Paul: “Very rarely will anyone die for a
righteous man, though for a good man someone
might possibly dare to die. 8 But God demonstrates
his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners,
Christ died for us.” (Romans 5:7-8).
Jesus marched through the swamp of our sin right
into hellish fires of our punishment. He was despised
by the people he came to save, and disowned by the
Father who sent him. Christ was killed in our place.
But neither the swamp of our sin nor the sting of our
death could stop him. He who marched into hell as
our Substitute marched back out again as our con-
quering Hero. Victory over sin and Satan is ours in
Christ’s resurrection.
May this wondrous truth fill you with peace and joy
this week and always!
