Two Thornhill residents claim lottery windfalls

Last week was shap-ing up to be a happy time for the Marner family of Thornhill. Son Mitch Marner, top Maple Leaf draft pick, earned the OHL Outstanding Player award and was play-ing in the OHL finals. As his parents headed to watch their son’s game, neighbours called to say their Autumn Hill Blvd. home was on fire. See story, page 9.

Controversial development plans for Sobeys plaza in Thornhill near Clark and Hilda avenues will be discussed at a City of Vaughan public hearing June 21.

In November 2015, RioCan pre-sented its plan to develop the plaza, formally known as SpringFarm Marketplace, at a packed residents meeting at Garnet A. Williams Com-munity Centre. At that point, the plan included building an 18-sto-rey condo with retail and a stacked townhouse block.

RioCan said it wanted to create an upgraded, walkable shopping

community.Since then, two additional sto-

reys have been added to the plan and residents have been contacting Thornhill Councillor Alan Shefman daily, asking what is happening with the project and saying they are not in favour of it, he said.

Pam Taraday-Levy, president of the SpringFarm Ratepayers Associ-

ation, hopes RioCan begins to listen to residents’ suggestions.

Next month’s hearing will likely begin with a presentation by the developer, Shefman said. Then, residents will have a chance to give five-minute public deputations. A report with staff recommendations will later go to council, Shefman said, predicting Vaughan council will discuss the issue in November or December.

Shefman plans to vote against the developer’s application.

“I would trust my colleagues to follow my lead and see this is not an appropriate project for this situa-tion,” Shefman said.

RioCan has likely taken its proj-ect to the Ontario Municipal Board, because the proposed height of the condo building exceeds the height allowed in the city’s official plan designation, Shefman said. The offi-cial plan allows for between four and six storeys, while the developer wants the building to be 20 storeys tall, according to Shefman.

A continuing problem is the traffic circulation issue, Shefman said. He is not concerned about an increase in traffic, but rather about cars having access to the plaza. Hav-ing just one entrance to the plaza off

WE’RE MOVING

By AMANDA [email protected]

Sending their children out into the world is an experience all moth-ers will at some point encounter.

Even mothers in the wild. Over the Mother’s Day week-

end, the Toronto Wildlife Centre released back into the wild nine brown snakes, a mom and eight babies.

Once back in nature, the snakes will go their separate ways.

Last winter, a harmless brown snake wiggled its way into St. Rob-ert Catholic School in Thornhill.

She slithered into — and made a temporary home of — the school office’s photocopier.

“My personal theory is the photocopier was a warm place to hibernate,” longtime Toronto Wildlife Centre volunteer Joanne

Ingrassia said.“It’s anyone’s guess how she

got in the copier or even in the school.”

The wildlife centre handles up to 30,000 hotline calls each year and admits about 5,000 animals into the centre’s wildlife hospital.

The centre works with more than 270 different species of wild birds, mammals, reptiles and amphibians.

The snake situation was a little out of the ordinary.

“We get calls about wildlife all the time, wildlife out in the wild and on city streets,” Ingrassia said. “It’s unusual to get a call about an animal inside.”

After a technician was called to take apart the copier, the foot-long snake was taken to the wildlife centre.

To the surprise of many, the snake was pregnant and later gave birth in the wildlife centre hospi-tal.

Since brown snakes usually hibernate during the cold season, the entire copier snake family was held together over the winter

months, being fed their natural diet of grubs, earthworms and slugs.

That is until this past weekend. Now that overnight tempera-

tures are consistent, the snakes — mom and babies — were released back to their home turf, a wooded area near the high school where mother snake was found.

Brown snakes are native to southern Ontario and other parts of North America.

The non-profit organization is the wildlife service provider for Markham that assists sick, injured, orphaned and distressed wildlife, as well as operates a full-service wildlife hospital in the GTA.

Promenade Mall may have been purchased by

Yogen Fruz brothers: sourceBy SIMONE [email protected]

The creators of Thornhill-based Yogen Fruz may have entered into a contract to buy the Promenade Mall, according to sources this week.

Brothers Michael and Aaron Serruya want to buy the mall, according to real estate website Buzz-Buzzhome news.

The brothers launched the first Yogen Fruz store in the Thornhill mall in 1986, the same year The Promenade opened at Bathurst Street and Clark Avenue West.

Yogen Fruz has expanded into more than 1,400 locations, operating in over 47 countries, with about 270 stores in Canada.

The Serruyas immigrated to Canada from Morocco in 1966.

They were part of an early wave of Jewish immi-gration caused by growing anti-Semitism.

Michael and Aaron noticed that frozen yogurt stands were popular in the U.S., but were practi-cally non-existent in Canada.

The first Yogen Fruz opened at the Promenade

Mall on a hot August day in 1986. There is still an outlet at the Promenade, along

with stores at nearby Centrepoint Mall at Yonge Street in Thornhill and Hillcrest Mall in Richmond Hill.

Calls and emails to Yogen Fruz headquarters and the Toronto Real Estate Board’s York Region office have not been returned by press time.

RBC Capital Markets could not confirm infor-mation about the selling of the mall.

An investment management firm, Serruya Pri-vate Equity, gave the brothers a stake in a variety of major companies, such as American Apparel and Cold Stone Creamery.

Cadillac Fairview, which currently owns The Promenade, is one of the largest commercial prop-erty owners in the world.

Cadillac Fairview spent $45 million on upgrades to the property in 2009 and put the mall up for sale in February of this year.

Some of the mall’s major tenants include Sears, T & T Supermarkets and Old Navy.

Campaign cabinet named for Mackenzie Vaughan’s $250M goalBy ADAM [email protected]

Mackenzie Health Founda-tion has assembled a team of “prominent leaders in business, health care and the community” to spearhead the effort to raise $250 million, in large part, for Vaughan’s long-awaited hospital.

The foundation, which also raises funds to enhance care at Mackenzie Richmond Hill Hos-pital, unveiled the so-called cam-paign cabinet for its $250-million Exceptional Care Belongs Here campaign earlier last week.

Greg Sorbara, former Liberal MPP for Vaughan and a former Ontario finance minister, is lead-ing the cabinet, which features several developers as well as real estate professionals, construc-tion union representatives, poli-ticians and bankers.

“We are asking people to make a gift to something that will be a direct part of their lives, for the rest of their lives and for genera-tions to come,” Sorbara said in a media release.

“This cabinet will help to inspire the donations that will create lasting legacies and trans-

form health care in southwest York Region.”

Among the campaign cabinet members are:• Vaughan Mayor Maurizio Bevil-acqua;• Glenn Beaumont, president of Enbridge Gas Distribution and

chairman of the Mackenzie Health Foundation board;• Robert De Gasperis, president of DG Group (formerly Metrus Devel-opment);• Marie Fiorellino-Di Poce, owner of John Paul & Co. and a founding member ETA of Vaughan Women’s

Shelter;• Vince Galifi, executive vice-pres-ident and CFO of Magna Interna-tional Inc.;• Lou Greenbaum, principal with The Vogue Development Group Inc.;• Tony Iannuzzi, president of the Carpenters’ District Council of Ontario;• Sandra Maio, lawyer for HBNG Holborn Group (which includes Maystar General Contractors, KAPP Contracting and Poetry Living); and• Altaf Stationwala, Mackenzie Health president and CEO.

Magna International’s $10-mil-lion pledge, made last October, ranks as the top gift made to the campaign so far.

In recognition of that generous gift, the emergency department at the new Mackenzie Vaughan Hos-pital will be named Magna Emer-gency.

The foundation expects to announce additional pledges of $1 million or more in the near future.

A major portion of the funds generated by the $250-million cam-paign will go to cover the “local share,” which includes 10 per cent

of construction costs for the Mack-enzie Vaughan Hospital as well as the majority of equipment and fur-niture costs.

On top of that, Vaughan taxpay-ers contributed $80 million toward purchasing and development of the land at Major Mackenzie Drive and Jane Street where the hospital will be built.

That money is being paid through a special levy expected to remain on the property tax bill until at least 2021.

The exact cost of building the hospital, and when its doors will open, is slated to be announced in the fall, after the consortium charged with designing, building, financing and maintaining the facility is selected.

Some officials have suggested the price tag to build the proposed state-of-the-art, 350-bed hospital is in the range of $1 billion.

Up until now, the goal has been to have the hospital built and open in 2019.

To find out more about the Exceptional Care Belongs Here campaign, go to mack-enziehealth.ca/foundation

The new Mackenzie Vaughan hospital will sit on Major Mackenzie Drive West at Jane Street in Vaughan. Key business and healthcare leaders have been named to a campaign cabinet to raise $250 million to help build it.

Fort Mac fire makes dramatic case for being prepared

gainst the terrible daily news stories and poignant social media posts about the Fort McMurray conflagra-

tion, Ontario and all York Region communities marked Emergency Preparedness Week last week.

Although many of us — myself included — don’t pay much attention to safety awareness campaigns held each year, it was impossible to ignore the stark realities illustrating why families should prepare for disaster.

Disaster struck May 3 in the northern Alberta town, and all Canadians have been watching in horror as 80,000 people — that’s the population of Newmarket — were forced to evacuate the flam-ing ruins of their community.

Can we learn a lesson from this tragedy before it’s too late for our own families?

The Region of York has a 99-page document on the ‘Risks in our area’. But if 99 pages is too daunting and time consum-ing for you to read, just click on your municipality’s website and find ‘Make an Emergency Plan’ or ‘Assemble a 72-Hour Kit’.

I clicked on the latter for Rich-mond Hill and found a two-page PDF of fairly simple — but vital — information and tips to follow to ensure my family is ready for a fire, flood, ice storm or any such emergency.

No one would dare say any-more, that ostrich-head-in-the-sand statement: “It can’t happen here”.

The December 2013 ice storm in Vaughan, Markham and Rich-mond Hill was a true disaster for those who lost power for days or had ice-coated trees topple on their properties.

An even more recent ice storm in March of this year caused $25-million in damage for resi-dents in Newmarket and Geor-gina.

Flooding in a freak July 2013 rainstorm stranded passengers on a Richmond Hill-bound GO train. Those people rescued by rubber dinghies would certainly tell you

that disasters can — and do — happen unexpectedly.

We can’t change the weather patterns and even the most envi-ronmentally committed residents know that climate change won’t be slowed or solved in a few years — or perhaps even in a generation.

The only thing we can do — besides donating generously to the Red Cross for fellow Canadians in Fort McMurray ($54 million to date, incredible!)— is get our own family ready for any emergency, large or small.

According to a federal emergen-cy link at www.getprepared.gc.ca, it only takes 20 minutes to make a family emergency plan online.

Before you click on the link, con-sider what safe exits you have from your home and neighbourhood; what meeting place you want to reunite with family members at work or school; your plan for pets; and know vital contact numbers for people close by (neighbours) or out of town (family).

Have you seen black humour social media posts from Fort Mac evacuees saying in their panic to flee they took silly things with them such as a bear head trophy off a wall, or junk food treats, leaving behind key and precious objects?

We all need to know where health and insurance documents are, or passports, to grab quickly.

And it may sound mundane, but does each person in your home know the location of fire extinguishers, water valve, elec-trical panel, gas valve and floor drain?

As each of those 80,000 evac-uees would no doubt agree, we should all be prepared for disaster.

A

Recycling adventure disappointing

I live in a condo on Yonge north of 16th Avenue and am president of the board of directors. Our board decided to offer a bulk collection of used compact fluorescent bulbs and lighting tubes in our building, as we thought no one would be willing to drive to the recycling centres with one tube or one light bulb.

We consulted with our ward councillor, who assured us that we would have no problems in offering this ser-vice to our residents.

On April 2, my adventure began. I felt we had collected enough of these hazardous items to make my first trip to a regional recycling centre.

I drove to the Elgin Mills facility (closest to my condo) where the individuals who met me were very accom-modating.

They took my bin of light bulbs and, after sorting them, explained they only collect the compact fluorescent bulbs (curly ones), no others, leaving me to take back the rest for disposal in landfill/garbage. So far, so good.

When I mentioned I also had fluorescent tubes, I was told they do not collect these because the disposal process is different; I would have to take them to the Markham or Vaughan regional sites.

My suggestion: Why doesn’t the Elgin Mills facility collect both and when a suf-ficient number of tubes has been collected, transfer them to the Markham or Vaughan sites? Isn’t it better than ask-ing residents to drive from one site to another?

At any rate, I headed to the Vaughan recycling centre at Rutherford and Jane.

There, my adventure with bureaucracy continued. As soon as the individual heard the word “condo”, I was shown a sign which stated that commercial drop-offs are not accepted.

To my shock, I discovered that York Region classifies condos as “commercial” for

SEND A LETTER: Email letters to [email protected]

recycling. Therefore, bulk col-lections from condos fall into the commercial catagory.

I was told the tubes would be accepted this one time; I would have to deal with York Region where the policy was created.

Numerous residents in my building suggested I share my adventure through The Liberal to inform read-ers that recycling is not an easy process, especially for condos.

I did phone the Region of York and was told condos are considered commercial.

After the person apolo-gized, I asked what we should do with used light bulbs and tubes. The answer was that there is a landfill site not too far from my location.

“Happy Earth Day”.

Mary atkinsonRIChmOND hILL

Review conducted with recyling staff Re: Recycling adventure dis-appointing, letter by Mary Atkinson.

We’d like to offer our apologies for the recent frus-trating experienced by Ms Atkinson at our [Richmond Hill and Vaughan] House-hold Hazardous Waste depots. It was a regrettable misunderstanding.

Senior staff are actively working to prevent a similar incident from being repeated in future and we also reached out in person to speak to her about her concerns.

We are reviewing our procedures with site staff to ensure they are clear about what condominium owners and multi-residential build-ing residents are permitted to drop off.

Our guidelines for House-hold Hazardous Waste Depots allow residents to drop off up to 60 litres of household hazardous waste and 20 fluorescent tubes per day. These limits apply to all residents, including condo-minium owners and multi-residential building residents, as a way to manage depot capacity and to comply with regulations related to onsite storage requirements.

York Region continues to rank first in waste diversion among large urban munici-palities and the fourth high-est overall in Ontario. Our successes are largely due to our residents’ commitment to diverting waste from landfill.

Their efforts, like those of Ms Atkinson, are truly mak-ing a difference.

If residents have questions regarding correct disposal of a particular item, we encour-age them to check our online resource, york.ca/bindicator or call 1-866-665-6752.

of Clark Avenue and losing the Hilda Street entrance will not be a positive change. “That’s chaos,” he said.

The best-case scenario, says Taraday-Levy, would be if RioCan began to pay attention to residents. She hopes the city supports the ratepayers association in its effort to highlight concerns, as well as the official plan and city bylaws.

The plaza includes a kosher Sobeys, kosher Second Cup, kosher restaurants and an Israel’s The Judaica Centre as well as a Shoppers Drug Mart and a drycleaner.

“The Sobeys plaza is as important to the Jewish commu-nity as Little Italy is to the Italians,” Taraday-Levy said. “What they are talking about is tearing that plaza apart.”

When the ratepayers association first met with RioCan, developer representatives said they were eager to hear from and listen to residents.

“That’s not proven to be the case,” Taraday-Levy said.Residents are angry, she said.“I’ve heard from people (saying) if you do all this, what

kosher stores can we go to? Where else can I go?”The worst-case scenario would be if RioCan proceeds with

its plan, she said, bringing up to 600 more residents with the condo.

“I hope they don’t dig their heels in to prove they can do whatever they want. The community is not against some intensification,” Taraday-Levy said.

SpringFarm Ratepayers Association has circulated a peti-tion to stop RioCan’s proposed development.

Leafs prospect Mitch Marner’s family home damaged by fire

By JEREMy [email protected]

The Thornhill home of Toronto Maple Leafs prospect Mitch Marner was the scene of a fire last Thursday, causing an estimated $400,000 worth of damage.

“It’s scary, but at least everyone is OK,” Marner, who was playing in the OHL finals for the London Knights, told Sportsnet after viewing the footage on his phone.

York Regional Police and Vaughan Fire and Rescue Services received the call at 3:35 p.m. May 5 after neighbours called 911 reporting the fire, which had by then engulfed much of the Autumn Hill Boulevard home’s garage.

The family is lucky not to have lost more, Vaughan Fire Chief Larry Bentley said.

“We almost lost the entire roof,” he said. “Our guys did well.”

The family will lose many personal items to smoke damage, he said.

Two animals — a chocolate Labrador retriever and a cat, named Burbank and Win-ston, respectively — were saved by neigh-bours and emergency crews, Bentley said.

It was also neighbours who called father Paul Marner to warn him while he was on his way to his son’s hockey game.

Bentley said he believes the cause was an “accident”, but would not give further details, noting the fire marshal was on site investigat-ing.

Marner, who just turned 19, was selected by the Leafs in the first round, fourth overall and is expected to have a bright future in the NHL.

He recently claimed the OHL’s Most Out-standing Player award.

Police seek Vaughan robbery suspects

York Regional Police are looking for two suspects following a robbery at a Vaughan convenience store last Thursday morning.

At 2:30 a.m., police responded to a report of a robbery at the store located in the Hwy. 7 and Martin Grove Road area. Two men entered the store, then one pointed a handgun at the clerk behind the counter and demanded cash.

The employee complied and the second suspect took the cash as well as lottery tickets and cigars.

Both men left the store and headed north on Martin Grove Road on foot.

No injuries were reported. Both suspects are described as white. One

was between 25 to 30, wearing a dark blue winter jacket with fur on the hood, a red bandana over his face and carrying a hand-gun. The second suspect was wearing a dark coloured jacket and white bandana that cov-ered his face.

Anyone with information should call police at 1-866-876-5423 ext. 6631 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS.

Maya was shocked by the change in her hair.Fullness and volume were replaced by thinnessand lifeless hair. She had to do something.

The hair I found in mybrush, in the shower andon my cardigan was unfa-miliar to me. It was thinninglike never before. How couldthis be happening?

Housing help, advice offered

Housing information sessions for low-income families, including newcomers, are planned for May and June. They are a joint project between Markham Public Library and The Housing Help Centre.

One session will be held in Thornhill May 16, with a second info session set for June 20, also in Thornhill.

Counsellors at The Housing Help Centre provide workshops that help families and indi-viduals to find housing, and keep it, while increasing their knowledge of their rights and responsibilities.

Since 2011, the centre has been funded by the Region of York and the United Way of York Region and has helped community members access housing in York Region.

The centre specializes in serving families of limited financial means, who also often face cultural and linguistic barriers. The centre’s

staff work with landlords and tenants to cre-ate awareness of rights and responsibilities through information workshops. The centre helps clients (especially newcomer immigrants to Canada) to access suitable housing and retain it through close follow-up and media-tion, where necessary.

The centre has helped many newcomers to settle and access habitable and appropriate housing in York Region. For more on the Hous-ing Help Centre, visit www.shhc.org

Two Thornhill neighbourhoods benefit from planned sewer construction

Two Thornhill neighbourhoods will get some relief from occasional flooding thanks to planned City of Markham sewer construction.

During any heavy rainfall, overflow from Green Lane, John Street and Bayview Avenue often causes flooding at both the Thornhill Community Centre and the Glynnwood Retire-ment Residence parking lots. The seniors resi-dence takes the brunt of overflow water, as it is adjacent to Glynnwood pond.

“After a storm, it looks like someone flushed a toilet,” Thornhill Councillor Valerie Burke said. “It’s just a rush of water.”

The city plans to build a $2.7-million relief stormwater sewer system, complete with a new storm sewer crossing and new catch basins to help reduce flooding in the area.

The first phase of the project is construction of the new storm sewer from Glynnwood Pond stormwater pond to Bayview Avenue, planned for 2017 pending the province’s approval of the city’s environmental assessment study.

The second and third phase — a new sewer crossing over Bayview Avenue and new catch basins in the Thornhill Community Centre parking lot — are tied to the Region of York’s future Bayview Avenue upgrade plan.

The plan should be looked at in conjunction with possible structured parking at the Thorn-hill Community Centre, which is one of the busier centres in Markham, said deputy mayor and Regional Councillor Jack Heath.

The city is limited in its plans for the storm water pond, jointly owned by the retirement residence and adjacent Shouldice Hospital.

The city is looking to gain control over the pond to allow for more regular sediment remov-al, to mitigate flooding. - Amanda Persico

Two Thornhill residents were cel-ebrating lottery wins last week.

Jeanette Switzer of Thornhill won the $100,000 top prize with Instant Crossword Tripler (game #1846).

She picked up her cheque from the OLG Prize Centre Friday and had purchased her lucky ticket at Cinema Convenience in Toronto.

Instant Crossword Tripler is avail-able for $5 a play; odds of winning a prize are 1 in 3.70.

Another lucky Thornhill resident is Vajihollah Nobakht Ivoli, who won a $75,000 top prize with Instant Pac-Man Slots (game #1867).

Ivoli arrived at the Prize Centre last Thursday with his daughter by his side. Since he only speaks Persian, his daughter shared his story.

“My father scanned the ticket in the ticket checker and he realized there was something unusual. He took the ticket to the retailer and she confirmed he was a winner.”

He still didn’t realize he had a win-ning ticket until the store owner, who also speaks Persian, shared the good news with him.

Ivoli plans to purchase some prop-erty with a portion of the windfall and share his good fortune with his children and grandchildren.

His winning ticket was purchased at Kitchen Food Fair on Steeles Ave-nue in Thornhill.

Vehicle alignment settings serve a variety of functions invehicle operation. They affect handling, steerability, stability, performance and safety, among other things. When a vehicle is in total alignment, all wheels “agree”onone direction so there are no lateral forces to counteract.

Research has shown that total vehicle alignmentmaintenance and inspection programs can pay dividendsin extended tire wear for increased tire mileage, enhancedfuel economy, decreased component wear, greater uptime, improved driver comfort and safer vehicles.

We recommend a wheel alignment on your vehicle at leastonce a year.

Are you not hearing clearly whena group of people are talking? Many people find that they are nolonger able to understand everythingbeing said, particularly when in thecompany of others. Engineered inSwitzerland, the Audéo V hearingaid has been designed specifically tounderstandspeech ingroupsituations.

The majority of those surveyed statedthat when exposed to considerablebackgroundnoise they are able to hearthat something is being spoken, butcan no longer discern precisely whatis being said. The words seem blurredand indistinct. But why is that? Theeffect tends to manifest itself in groupsituations, especially in restaurants. TO BE PART OF THE

Kitchen trends to watch in 2016Modern kitchen appliances are rapidly evolving to meet the needs of those who are hungry for sleeker style and enhanced functionality - so says the team at Trend Hunter. The home experts at Trend Hunter have highlighted the top three trends in kitchens.

Trend 1: dIY HealTH

Technology in the kitchen is empowering us to take a more active role in managing our own health and wellness. Ascano cites indoor gardens designed for even the smallest spaces that allow every family

to grow fresh herbs, greens and sprouts right in their own kitchen.

Trend 2: dual-PurPose PreP

The kitchen of the future is filled with appliances and products that are geared to accommodate a fast-paced lifestyle and improve efficiencies in day-to-day life. Trend Hunter’s Armida Ascano points to GE Appliances’ new GE Cafe + Keurig refrigerator as a prime example. The appliance includes a Keurig coffee brewing system right in the fridge, allowing

you to brew your favourite coffee, with a touch of the button, right from your refrigerator door.

Trend 3: Clean ConneCTIvITY

Less is more. The minimalist design trend that started in the mobile phone category is coming to life in every corner of the home, including kitchen appliances. “The most modern kitchen appliances look a lot like today’s smartphones,” says Lyndon Madden, marketing director at GE Appliances Canada. “Squared edges, lots of glass

and touch screen controls are key design elements we’re bringing to the market in response to consumer demand.”
