For Milos Raonic, it was a case of a lesson well learned when he finally broke through to play Andy Murray of Scotland in the Wim-bledon men’s singles’ final at the fabled Wimbledon Tennis Club in London, England Sunday.

Making Canadian tennis his-tory by being the first Canadian male to compete in a single’s final at Wimbledon, the sixth-seeded, 25-year-old Thornhill resident came out second best after falling

Drought good for beer drinking, but not farmers: weather expertBY LISA QUEEN

[email protected]

When farmer Jim Hulshof isn’t checking two weather apps on his phone, he is gazing up at the sky wondering when rain will come.

The Stouffville farmer believes this in one of the three driest summers he’s seen since he first began helping farm the crops as a child 50 years ago.

“It’s a trying year more than anything else, just because of lack of water. Horrible. Dry, dry, dry,” he said, adding there has probably been a quarter of the normal rainfall since early May.

Hulshof’s distress over the dry summer comes as David Phlllips, senior climatologist

with Environment Canada, says York Region and southern Ontario are experiencing a severe drought and as Lake Simcoe Region Conserva-tion Authority asks residents and businesses to scale back their water consumption.

Hulshof irrigates 40 acres of his 50-acre farm – on which he grows vegetables such as broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, sweet corn, pumpkins and squash. Even so, all the crops are suffering from heat stress.

Even when it has rained a few times since the beginning of May, it has often arrived as torrential showers, which has made it difficult for arid land to absorb, Hulshof said.

“You need a gentle rain at first just to soften

it up just to absorb some of the water. That’s the problem now, when you do get rain now, it just runs off, it doesn’t help at all,” he said.

Environment Canada’s Phillips said most areas of York and southern Ontario are suffer-ing from the dry conditions to some degree.

“Dryness is everywhere in York Region, with degrees of dryness varying between south and north,” he said.

For example, July 1 storms brought only 3.5 millimetres of rain in Buttonville, while the unofficial total in Aurora was 11.1 mm.

Last Friday night, only 2.8 mm fell at But-tonville, while the unofficial amount in Aurora was 12.5 mm.

“What we need is a four-day rainfall with 15 to 20 mm each day, not all in one hour because most of it will not go to work for you. (The rains) fill the sewers and cause intersection flooding but they don’t really get down to the root zone, ” he said.

At Buttonville, where there is an Environ-ment Canada weather station, about 90 mm of rain fell in May, June and up to July 11, less than half the 188 mm that would normally fall during that time, Phillips said.

“This has been great beer drinking weather but it hasn’t been great for people depending on moisture from a growing point of view. There’s fire bans and watering bans, too.”

Two youngsters from Israel (in purple T-shirts) were welcomed last year with open arms to Thornhill by hosts Ami Shields (from left), Zahava and Mordie Shields, and Esti Cohen and her husband Randy (inset photo). The hosts give children scarred by loss a chance to relax, be themselves and bond with others who understand.

Thornhill families welcome Israeli children scarred by loss

By Simone [email protected]

Esti Cohen is content in know-ing she has helped at least one Israeli girl take off her “mask”.

Cohen helps coordinate the Thornhill portion of a supportive summer trip for young Israelis.

The trip is a program from the non-profit organization Israel Defense Force (IDF) Widows and Orphans.

A three-week trip to North America, it is funded by the Israeli government. The program is meant for bar/bat mitzvah-age children (who are 12 or 13 years old) who have lost a parent due to war or terrorist attacks.

The children enjoy summer camp activities, tour new cities and become friends with campers their age.

“It’s a vulnerable time,” says volunteer Terry Ginzburg. “It’s a special milestone in their lives. A parent isn’t there, that’s why they pick this time to go on an exciting trip to North America to get their mind off of it, to show that the diaspora community cares.”

The young visitors will be in Thornhill July 18 to 21, hosted in people’s homes. Many of the hosts are from a Thornhill synagogue called the Beth Avraham Yoseph of Toronto (BAYT).

Cohen speaks of one student, suffering from parental loss, who took the trip two years ago. Cohen

was touched when she heard this girl talk about how much the trip meant to her.

“She could take her mask off and realize she was not alone,” Cohen said.

“Until now, at public school in Israel, she hid behind her mask,” Cohen said, adding the trip to North American changed this.

“She could be herself, bond, be with kids who understand.”

Cohen describes the impor-tance of the trip in an annual fundraising letter she wrote to family and friends.

“For all or many, this trip may be the first time these children will leave Israel or their mother’s arms, but it will be a time of growth, bonding, happiness and overcom-ing sadness. We owe it to the chil-dren; we owe it to their fathers and mothers,” Cohen wrote.

But Cohen insists hers is not a solo effort; she is one of a team of similarly dedicated volunteers.

“Without the community, I would not be able to do this.”

One such dedicated helper is Ginzburg, who hosted two boys last year. Ginzburg learned that both boys’ fathers had been killed

in explosions. One man was killed while on army reserve duty two years ago.

But not all participants have suffered recent losses. One par-ticipant lost his father as a baby.

Before the Jewish holiday of Passover, Ginzburg called the chil-dren who had stayed with her last year to say Chag Sameach (happy holiday).

“They were so excited,” Ginz-burg recalls. “One boy called out to the other in Hebrew: ‘It’s our mom from Canada.’”

Says Ginzburg: “It was heart-warming. It was very emotional.”

“What the kids all have in com-mon is they have all suffered a huge loss. They have this bond,” Ginzburg said. “It’s a happy time for most people but in the shad-ows, there’s this absence of a par-ent. That’s what they are dealing with.”

But in their host country and community they can relax and bond.

“They heal, grow together, laugh together,” Cohen said. Once back in Israel, they often keep in touch.

Ginzburg enjoys the personal satisfaction she gets from lending her skills to this mission.

“In a small way, we can do our bit to help.”

Getting a perfect grade isn’t something you stumble into, according to one York Region schol-ar.

Newmarket High School’s Jeff Niu is one of six York Region stu-dents who are graduating with a 100-per-cent grade average calcu-lated from their six best Grade 12 course marks. But those wanting to achieve the same had better have that goal going into Grade 9, according to Niu.

“Getting 100 per cent isn’t something you can pull off over-night,” Niu said.

“I wouldn’t have much advice to offer a student entering their final year who asks how to get the perfect mark.”

The scholar’s first word of advice is to take courses you have an inter-est in, because perfection is more attainable if you’re studying a sub-ject you are interested in.

Second, do your homework because the only way to get bet-ter and faster at homework is to practise. Finally, surround yourself with like-minded people who will motivate you to challenge yourself and make learning fun.

In the fall, Niu will head to the University of Waterloo to study mechatronics, the design of com-puter-controlled electromechani-

cal systems. He was a member of the school’s

robotics team and often participat-ed in “hackathon” events.

Father Michael McGivney gradu-ates Malavan Ragulojan and Janani Sathiaselan tied for second place in the region’s top scholars list, as both Markham students achieved a 99.83-per-cent average.

They echo Niu’s advice of being among peers who have a passion for learn-ing.

“My peers in the IB pro-gram were very s u p p o r t i v e , ” Sathiaselan said.

“It was nice to face the trials and challenges

of the intensive program together because we really understood and supported each other.”

The scholars agree that there is no short cut when it comes to aca-

demic achieve-ment, only hard work, dedication and having the support of those around you.

Three impres-sive students from Bayview Secondary School in Richmond Hill earned per-fect 100 per cent

marks: Edward Li, Guan Wang and Monica Xu.

Home prices surge again in Richmond Hill, Markham

By KIM [email protected]

Richmond Hill homeowners continue to ride the crest of a housing price wave that saw double-digit growth across the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) during the second quar-ter of 2016, according to a survey released yesterday.

The Royal LePage Housing Price Survey and Market Survey Forecast released Wednes-day reported the highest national year-over-year gain seen in five years – primarily in the Greater Vancouver and Toronto areas.

The median prices of two-storey homes and bungalows in the GTA rose 11.4 per cent and 10.7 per cent year-over-year respectively, the survey showed, with strongest growth found in regions outside of Toronto’s city limits.

Richmond Hill experienced the largest gains in appreciation east of British Colum-bia, with aggregate prices surging 21.3 per cent to $992,632 — in part due to increased foreign buyer activity, the survey said.

Markham house prices were also boosted by foreign buyers, seeing an increase of 12.4

per cent year-over-year in the second quarter to reach $825,753.

“Multiple offers are now the norm, as rock-bottom interest rates and the relative value of the yuan and U.S. dollar have encour-aged many to buy Canadian, resulting in an unprecedented level of demand within the region,” noted the survey.

Vaughan was not far behind, with prices increasing by 10.1 per cent to $780,699.

Home builders appear to be responding to the price jumps.

The Toronto Real Estate Board, which reported a 17 per cent rise in June home prices earlier this month, said at the time that lack of supply in the city was “of para-mount importance.” New numbers on hous-ing construction starts, however, may give some relief. Housing starts jumped to an annualized pace of 218,333 units in June, the Canada Mortgage & Housing Corporation said Monday.

That’s the highest since September and a 17 per cent increase from a month earlier – suggesting builders are responding the rising prices in Vancouver and Toronto areas.

Shocking reminder to keep both hands on wheel

t a movie theatre last week, during the com-mercials that preced-ed the movie we had paid to see, I literally jumped in my seat in a

violent reaction.I gasped out loud as I viewed,

for the first time, images of a young man who, in the previous few sec-onds is seen picking up and glanc-ing at his phone on the passenger seat of the car he’s driving — ram into something.

Air bags implode and one can only imagine the horrendous scene that unfolds prior to us seeing the same young man, Andrew, con-fined to a wheelchair in a hospital room.

He is being attended to by a kind young nurse who wipes away his drool and then offers to move him towards the window to take a look at the nice day outside.

Unable to show or voice appre-ciation, his vacant stare reminds us of the life sentence he will serve for indulging in a moment of curiosity and taking his eyes off the road.

So moved was I by this powerful 60-second commercial created by Ontario’s Ministry of Transporta-tion, that I contacted them about how I could help spread the word.

I learned that the ministry is targeting distracted driving this summer with a powerful market-ing campaign that urges people to #PutDownThePhone.

Although cellphone-related distractions are huge, cell phones are not the only problem causing distracted driving deaths in Ontar-io — deaths that have more than doubled since 2000.

Distracted driving occurs any time that we take our eyes off the road and certainly any time we take our hands off the wheel.

So, in conjunction with spread-ing the word about the ministry’s incredible initiative, I want to fur-ther drive home this important message by encouraging you to be consistently mindful of where your hands are any time your car is on the road.

This means that if you take a hand off the wheel to change the channel on your radio, to eat an

apple or sandwich, or even to hold your passenger’s hand, then you are distracted, whether you want to admit it or not.

I urge you to practise mind-fulness while driving by regularly reminding yourself to keep #Both-HandsOnTheWheel.

Putting your phone in your purse or glove compartment when driv-ing, installing a bluetooth device that is voice-activated if you need to make or take a call while driving, and pulling over to the side of the road if you want to eat something or need to make a reminder note to yourself, are ways of ensuring you are not being a distracted driver.

I know this is not easy. I, too, have felt the pull of want-

ing to check a text while driving, of telling myself I will be careful as I munch on an apple.

Lately, however, just remem-bering the impact of the dramatic commercial is enough to bring me back to the harsh reality that, as the ad reminds us, “it happens fast” — that it only takes a second for one’s life, and the life of others around you, to change forever.

I’m sure you’d agree that noth-ing is worth that.

If you’d like to help spread the word, please tweet and post messages on Facebook using the hashtags #PutDownThePhone and #BothHandsOnTheWheel.

Share your stories about how you’ve helped prevent yourself from being a distracted driver. For more, go to www.helpmesara.com

Beware of aggressive door-to-door reps

Last week two young men knocked on my door claim-ing to be from an “energy company,” wanting to check the efficiency of my water heater.

They were not clear which company they represented. They did not show any ID, they did not have any hand-out information.

They were quite aggres-sive about trying to gain entry into my home. They kept ask-ing if the water heater was in the basement and should they remove their shoes.

They insisted it was a free service being offered, not a service call or sales pitch, but just a check on the water heater.

Because my husband was home, I was not as nervous as I might have been had I been alone. Being foolish enough to not want to be rude and slam the door in their faces, I let them engaged me in con-versation for several minutes before they finally gave up, as

SEND A LETTER: Email letters to [email protected]

they realized I wasn’t going to let them in.

Beware, this is not the first time I have had this happen.

If you haven’t requested a service call, the [legitimate] service providers do not pro-vide door-to-door service. If someone is truly canvassing, the first thing they will do is show you proper identifica-tion, at the very least.

Never let a stranger into your home who hasn’t been invited.

Provide more subway optionsRe: You can help bring sub-way to York, July 7.

Finally, we’re gaining vis-ibility for the much-needed expansion of the subway into Richmond Hill.

However, this is only going to exacerbate the cur-rent overcrowding on Line 1: by the time trains arrive at Finch, they will already be full, if not packed.

I’d suggest a better approach would be to extend into Richmond Hill AND loop over to join the Downsview subway extension. That way riders can take the appropri-ate route to downtown desti-nations.

This would ease conges-tion at the Line 1 and Line 2 intersection (Line 1? Line 2? are yet more examples of creative thinking in the ivory towers of bureaucracy) and provide options to riders.

If the Yonge Street leg of the subway has a problem, riders could use the Spadina/Downsview leg.

Back home, the Circle Line on “The Tube” provided just that option, so this is not a new solution, just an old one applied to an existing and growing transportation crisis.

Wake up, people! Think long term....

Alleged drunk driver caught napping at Markham police station

Last Saturday, shortly after 7 p.m., an officer was walking through the parking lot at the York Regional Police, 5 District, located at 8700 McCowan Rd., Markham, when he noticed a man sleeping in the driver’s seat of a Toyota Sienna van.

As he approached the van to check on the man’s well-being, the officer immediately noticed a strong smell of alcohol coming from inside the van, as well as an open case of beer.

After waking up the driver and speaking with him, it became apparent he was impaired and that he had no idea that he was in a police parking lot.

The 34-year-old male driver from Toronto has been charged with one count of impaired operation of a motor vehicle - care and control and his driver’s licence was suspended.

He was one of 15 drivers arrested by York police for impaired driving in less than 72 hours, between July 8 and 10.

Police urge citizens to report impaired driv-ers by calling 911 as part of the Safe Roads ... Your Call program.

The law concerning the continuing powerof attorney for property is complicated. In order to make it easier for you tounderstand the complexities in this areaof the law, I would like to highlight thefollowing points:

The word “attorney” in a continuingpower of attorney for property doesnot mean that you have to appoint yourlawyer. You can appoint a trusted familymember or friend.

Your will and your continuing power ofattorney for property are separate anddistinct documents. One does not replacethe other, but you are certainly allowedto appoint the same person to represent you in both your will and yourcontinuing power of attorney for property. Your will only takes effect afteryour death, and your continuing power of attorney for property is onlyeffective during your life and terminates at your death.

A power of attorney that you may have signed at the bank for bankingpurposes is not the same as the continuing power of attorney for property. The bank power of attorney would not be effective with respect to yourhome, condo or any other real estate in your name, and in all likelihood, the bank power of attorney would not be effective with respect to any otherassets which you own, to the extent that those assets are kept outside ofthe particular bank.

A situation may arise where you want to revoke your continuing power ofattorney for property, and of course, you can always do this as long as youhave the mental capacity. Once you lose that capacity, it will be too late torevoke your continuing power of attorney for property.

This subject is not only for seniors. Remember that even if you are in yourtwenties and in excellent health, you run the risk that you may unexpectedlylose your mental capacity because of a motor vehicle accident or sportsaccident. You cannot make a valid continuing power of attorney, if you areunder the age of majority.

The word “property” in the phrase continuing power of attorney for propertyshould not be taken to mean real estate alone. Property is a word that candescribe any asset such as an automobile, stock or bond. I cannot overemphasize how important it is to appoint someone whom you completelytrust to represent you in a continuing power of attorney for property. If youdo not trust the person, do not appoint him or her.

I am a wills lawyer with the law firm Fish and Associates, 7951 Yonge Street,Thornhill, Ontario (Yonge and Royal Orchard). We are located in a turn ofthe century home with plenty of free parking. The atmosphere is relaxedand we speak in plain language.

I would be pleased to review your existing will for free to make sure that itis not a recipe for a family nightmare. I would also be pleased to providea free will consultation, if you do not have a will and do not know where tostart.

Markham woman wins photo contest

Yorkregion.com recently received photos of a child holding the moon, someone hold-ing the Big Nickel in Sudbury between their fingers and more apparently strange phe-nomena.

Of course, nothing strange really hap-pened, the images were just entries in our forced perspective photo contest.

Congratulations to Markham’s Amanda Yim for winning the readers’ choice award with her photo of the Big Nickel, which she dubbed, “Nickel eh?”. Her entry received the most votes from readers.

Greensborough’s Hetal Damania won the photographers’ choice award with his photo of her son reaching for the moon.

Since opening its fairways in 1922, the Thornhill Club has played host to a number of golf championships at the provincial, national and international levels.

Starting Tuesday and concluding Friday, the club can add another prestigious competition to its portfolio when it hosts the 2016 Investors Group Ontario Men’s Amateur Championships.

Hosting this event is not new to the Thornhill Club, as it last held this event in 1987, which was won by Steve Hayles of St. George’s Golf and Country Club.

Prior to that, the club hosted this event on two other occasions in 1947, which was won by Rudy Horvath of Lakewood Golf Club, and in 1954 that was captured by Grant Shirk of Westmount Golf and Country Club.

The Thornhill Club has also hosted the Ontario Ladies’ Amateur on three occasions in 1953, 1958 and 1971.

The last major event held at the Thornhill Club was the Canadian Junior Girls’ Championship in 2014 that was won by Grace St-Germain.

Ranked among the top-20 classic golf courses in Canada by Golf World in April, 2016, the Thornhill Club’s rich history also saw them host the 1945 Cana-dian Open that saw Byron Nelson claim his 11th victory in a row.

The public is welcome to attend to enjoy the high-calibre golf.

The Thornhill Club is located at 7994 Yonge St.- Michael Hayakawa

Several York Region residents will put their rhythmic gymnastic skills to the test on the international stage for Canada after they were chosen to be on the national senior and junior individual teams for the 2016-17 season, Gymnastics Canada announced last week.

Among the 10 senior individual team members chosen included are: Thornhill resident Patricia Bezzoubenko, 19; Aurora resident Carmen Whelan, 18; Georgina resi-

dent Athena Tsaltas, 16; and Thornhill resi-dent Anastasia Shanko, 16.

Thornhill resident Katherine Savchenko was also named to the 10-member junior individual team.

The team members were chosen based on a selection process that included results from the 2016 Elite Canada competition and 2016 Canadian Championships.

BARTON, DanielIt is with great sadness that the Barton family announces the passing of Daniel Barton, age 80, on June 28, 2016. Danny’s greatest love was his wife Beverley (Sweetie), to whom he was happily married for 57 years. Danny leaves behind his 3 children, Mark, Michael & Susan & their spouses who all live close by. Danny was Papa to 9 grandchildren & 7 great-grandchildren. Danny was the eldest son of 9 children of which he leaves behind 3 sisters & 2 brothers. Danny was in the automotive industry for over 55 years where he was respected and known as a very principled man. Danny had a great passion for sharing with others all he had learned from the bible. Danny served for many years as an elder in the local congregation of Jehovah’s Witnesses. He has now fulfilled the Bible’s words at 2 Timothy 4:7:

“ I have fought the fine fight, I have run the course to the finish, I have observed the faith.”

Danny will always be remembered for his kindness, his generosity and his loyalty to his god, Jehovah. Memorial to be held at Ballantrae Golf & Country Club, 1 Final Round, Stouffville, ON on July 17th at 7:00. hey say food is love, and for 27 years, Tony and Rachel Chiovitti served up both at their ma and pa shop, Multi Pasta, in Richmond Hill.

Tony Chiovitti was the “front man” for the popular establishment, attracting customers and friends alike with his corny jokes and warm welcome for all.Tony passed away in May at the age of 63, leaving many in the community shocked and mourn-ing a man they say had a heart of gold.“He was a true gem,” recalls long-time customer Mark Augustin. “He cared deeply for his family and his friends and he will be missed.”Tony came to Canada from Italy at the age of seven with his grand-parents and eventually settled in Woodbridge. It was at a wedding in New York that he first met Rachel. They courted by letter for a year and in 1989, the young couple purchased the shop on Oxford Street, south of Yonge and Elgin Mills.Tony set the friendly tone, greet-ing customers by name, remem-bering their favourite dishes and details about their families.Word spread about their fresh, homemade food, but what drew people back, and encouraged them to stay and chat, was Tony’s gift of the gab.“He had a natural gift that way,” says his daughter, Sandra,

Tony Chiovitti served up pasta, humour and love

Tdescribing how he worked at the pasta shop and a sales job with Unico until the family business grew too busy to do both. For more than two decades, Tony and Rachel worked what every-one joked was “the equivalent of an eight-day week”, side-by-side, leaving Mondays off for their “date day”.Their three children, Sandra, Dori and Michael, worked at Multi Pasta, too, and once a week, Tony’s parents took the bus from Toronto to Richmond Hill to help out, leaving their mark with family recipes like Nonna’s Sauce. The shop became a little com-munity and the Chiovittis grew to know who was the “Thursday night customer” or the “Sunday regular”. If you mentioned someone was sick, Tony sent you home with soup. If your kids were home visit-ing from university, he’d remem-ber their favourite meal.Sundays, he’d hang out with the regulars, talk with them about their lives and share samples of his latest recipes.“Try this mess. I made it myself,” he’d say, offering up something delicious he’d concocted that day.“It was like his kitchen was your kitchen,” Augustin, of Richmond Hill, remembers. “He’d say ‘Bring your own dishes. I’ll put my food in it and you can say it’s yours!’ He made you feel like family.”At the same time, customers became family to Tony. He’d boast about his grandchildren and dis-play their photos on a big bulletin board in the shop.

Customers brought Tony and Rachel gifts for Christmas and Easter, Sandra says. “They’d always wonder at that, saying ‘we’re just your pasta supplier!’” Tony spent his last weekend cele-brating with family and friends and Monday, “date day”, with Rachel, visiting with grandchildren Robert, 8, and Stella, 6. In the wee hours of May 17, he passed away from cardiac arrest.“He was able to see a lot of people

he cared about that weekend,” Rachel says. “It was like God was getting him ready to go.”Rachel was back in the shop again one week later, finding it soothing to be surrounded by customers who could share their Tony stories, memories and warm thoughts — providing the same family-like sup-port that Tony had offered them for so many years.Today (July 14) is Rachel and

Tony’s 43rd wedding anniversary. Rachel anticipates it will be a tough day to get through, but she knows she’ll be comforted by the blanket of support provided by the community that she and Tony built.

“Tony was one of a kind. He wore his heart on his sleeve, he was a giving man. Family was very important to him. A great stand up guy! He will never be forgotten!”

- Mr. and Mrs. Michael Iamundo “He was a man of good humour, hon-our, respect and love for his fellow humans. The sparkle in his eyes and his wide smile was always so welcom-ing to see. In 27 years, I never saw a frown on his face.”

- Daniella and Primo Ballan “I had the pleasure of being one of Tony’s customers at Multi Pasta. My Sunday ritual of going to get that day’s pasta for my Sunday lunch with my family always proved to be more than a simple customer/vendor exchange. His jokes were corny but they always brought a smile … Heaven has just received another shining star and may he rest in the love of God’s peace.”

- Teena Poirier “Yesterday, as I do every week, I stopped by Multi Pasta for my weekly shopping and chat with a great man, Tony. I was deeply saddened to read a notice on the door that you had passed away. My heart goes out to your family, who you spoke of often with such great love and pride. You were an amazing busi-ness owner in Richmond Hill, always making each and every customer feel welcome.” - Jennifer Slamen

Longtime customers say they never saw a frown on Tony Chiovitti’s face.

the last few weeks to improve and give myself this opportunity to take another step forward.

“I will try to remember the lessons the most and try and put myself in this position again and to make the most of these chances and try to go on even further.”

In getting a taste of what it feels like to play in a Grand Slam final, Raonic is confident he can take what he learned from his loss to Mur-ray and put it to his advantage when the next Grand Slam event takes place at the U.S. Open in Flushing, N.Y. next month.

Raonic hopes to carry the momentum he gained from Wimbledon when he takes to the hard court for the Rogers Cup presented by National Bank at the Aviva Centre on the York University campus from July 23 to 31.

“I believe I have that ability within myself,” he said. “The question is if I am going to make the most of it? No question I’ll work hard to give myself these opportunities. I can’t leave any stone unturned. I’ll try to get back in this position.”

Nurturing his game as a youngster at the Blackmore Tennis Club in Richmond Hill, Raonic was appreciative of the unwavering support he received from his supporters across Canada.

“A big thank you,” he said in response to what he would say to Canadian fans on Ten-nis Canada’s website. “It’s not just the support here, it’s the support through numerous weeks wherever I go to play tennis. The appreciation for tennis in Canada has considerably grown, just for Canadians in general all over the world.

There’s always a big contingency, a big show-ing up. It’s a great honour to have that kind of support.”

One of several viewing parties for fans was held Sunday morning at the Richmond Hill Tennis Club beside Centennial Pool.
