Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

First, just a liturgical note that next week our parish will celebrate the anniversary of the dedication of our parish church at all Masses in place of the 4th Sunday in Ordinary Time. This annual celebration is a great solemnity for a parish, and gives us the opportunity to renew our local mission as disciples of Jesus Christ.

By now, you hopefully have heard that the Pope has proclaimed the Year of Saint Joseph. Here are a few questions and answers from a Catholic News Agency article you might find helpful in understanding what this means and how to take advantage of it. Saint Joseph, pray for us! – Fr. Wilson

———

Pope Francis announced a Year of St. Joseph December 8, 2020 to December 8, 2021. The Pope said he was establishing the year so that “every member of the faithful, following his example, may strengthen their life of faith daily in the complete fulfillment of God’s will.”

Why did the Pope declare a year of St. Joseph?

Pope Francis noted that this year marks the 150th anniversary of the Saint’s proclamation as Patron of the Universal Church by Pope Pius IX on Dec. 8, 1870. Pope Francis said the coronavirus pandemic has heightened his desire to reflect on St. Joseph, as so many people during the pandemic have made hidden sacrifices to protect others, just as St. Joseph quietly protected and cared for Mary and Jesus.

“Each of us can discover in Joseph -- the man who goes unnoticed, a daily, discreet and hidden presence -- an intercessor, a support and a guide in times of trouble,” the pope wrote. He also said he wanted to highlight St. Joseph’s role as a father who served his family with charity and humility, adding, “Our world today needs fathers.”

What special graces are available during this year?

Catholics have opportunities to gain a plenary indulgence, that is the remission of all temporal punishment due to sin. An indulgence can be applied to oneself or to a soul in Purgatory. An indulgence requires a specific act, defined by the Church, as well as sacramental confession, Eucharistic Communion, prayer for the pope’s intentions, and full detachment from sin.

Special indulgences during the Year of St. Joseph can be received through more than a dozen different prayers and actions, including praying for the unemployed, entrusting one’s daily work to St. Joseph, performing a corporal or spiritual work of mercy, or meditating for at least 30 minutes on the Lord’s Prayer.

Why does the Church honor St. Joseph?

The Catholic Church honors St. Joseph as the foster father of Jesus. He is invoked as the patron saint of the Universal Church. He is also the patron of workers, father, and a happy death.

My Jesus, I believe that You are present in the Most Holy Sacrament. I love You above all things, and I desire to receive You into my soul. Since I cannot at this moment receive You sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart. I embrace You as if You were already there and unite myself wholly to You. The Sunday of the Word of God

Pope Francis has called for the Church to celebrate the Sunday of the Word of the God annually on the 3rd Sunday of Ordinary Time. That is today January 24th.

Pope Francis compares opening the bible to opening the door to Christ, who is knocking at the door. “Christ Jesus is knocking at our door in the words of sacred Scripture. If we hear his voice and open the doors of our minds and hearts, then he will enter our lives and remain ever with us.” Open up your bible, start reading, and get to know Jesus!

Dear Parents of K – 5th graders: 1. January challenge: new resolutions Pope Francis has asked that today, the 3rd Sunday in Ordinary Time, be a special Sunday for the Word of the Lord. As a family, read some scripture every day. You can start by letting the children suggest a story (Daniel in the lions’ den), then find it (that might be an adventure in itself), then read it together. Try that each day this week – then hopefully continue every day for the year! 2. Take advantage of FORMED; it has all sorts of fabulous programing. Not on FORMED? Sign up at www.formed.org/signup, enter Aiken, SC, then choose St. Mary Help of Christians 3. Continue working on your CCD / Catechism books 4. First Holy Communion families: work through the First Communion Catechism with your child(ren). It has simple explanations and fun pictures. Practice going to confession. Regístrese en www.formed.org/signup, ingrese a Aiken, SC, luego elija St. Mary Help of Christians. 3.

2020 — the Year of St. Joseph

This weekly column will give you some facts about Joseph to ponder and to discuss throughout the year. Get to know Joseph! St. Francis de Sales wrote: Truly, I doubt not that the angels, wondering and adoring, came thronging in countless multitudes to that poor workshop to admire the humility of him who guarded that dear and divine child, and labored at

his carpenter’s trade to support the son and mother who were committed to his care. To think about: Angels always surround us. When you attend Mass or make a visit to church, the church is full of angels adoring Our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament. Spend some time pondering that next time you are in the church. Mom in Need - Can You Help?

“Walking With Moms in Need" in the Myrtle Beach area has an URGENT NEED for a pregnant Mom who chose life for her baby. She needs a PLACE TO STAY for herself and her 10 year old son. We hope to find her a small apartment or mobile home, or part of a house to share. If you are in the process of donating or trading in a CAR, please consider passing it on to her. Our HOPE is that we can help this Mom who chose LIFE instead of abortion for her child, and will be living and active witnesses of Christ who said "Whenever you did it for the least of my children, you did it unto me." Contact Terry Borkes [email protected] OR Joanne Bennett [email protected]. Please put 'Mom in Need" in subject line.
