Where it all goes… Alchemy Acres is truly a Non-Profit animal sanctuary. Every dollar
and dime goes directly to veterinary care, preventative care, food
and other dietary needs, cleaning supplies, litter/beddings,
toys/treats, more vet bills, microchips, insurance, and many other
necessities that are met for our residents. Alchemy’s caregivers are
privately sponsored and all other workers are volunteers. No board
members or founder receive any compensation other than the love
our residents at Alchemy give us so effortlessly.
We have had one of the most emotional years to date here at the sanctuary. One day we did a head count of the animals in our care, including our wildlife division, we had an even 250 lives depending
on us. We are also, now boarding 13 dogs and two cats for homeless pet owners that are trying to get their personal lives back on track
with a home that is conducive to pet ownership. We are taking care of these animals physically and medically so soon they will be ready
to go home. It is wonderfully rewarding to watch when the pets greet their owners during visiting periods; their love for each other is so obvious! Any contribution you could make whether it be donation, time, monetary sponsorship, avocation, services or adoption, will greatly change more than one life here at Alchemy. Thank you in
advance for your compassion.

For those of you familiar with the Alchemy newsletter, you may notice Matilda’s column missing. It is with great sorrow that we relay to you that several months ago, Matilda began her battle with cancer. Despite treatments, Matilda passed away shortly after diagnosis. She was a happy ferret who thoroughly enjoyed meeting and greeting her public every day and hosting educational programs about pet care. Now, if you haven’t already, meet Buckeye! Hi Everyone! Call me The Buck! I love it here at
Alchemy! I pretty much run this place! And my Alchemy family, they wouldn’t know what to do without me. You see, I was adopted from Alchemy as a puppy and when I was with my first family, we moved around which
made me anxious. They didn’t realize I had a nervous issue. I was so worried they were going to move and forget me! So I did the only rational thing and dug through every cage, wall, window and door that was ever put between me and my family. It turns out that tearing up doors and going through dry wall just to get to the people you love only makes the people you love mad at you. After drugging me (with three times the amount a vet normally would) they decided I wasn’t a part of their family anymore. So I came back to my Alchemy family who didn’t know about the drugs until later so I ended up going through withdrawal from the medicine as well as my previous family and I started destroying things at Alchemy too. I figured they would disown me too. But they didn’t! In fact, no matter what I do, they still love me! I go to work every day and home every night! Finally Steve just adopted me and I sleep at his feet every night, at least until I stretch out between him and mom. Anyways, that’s enough about me! I’m supposed to pick a topic and discuss it each newsletter issue. Can you believe it?!? My humans picked me to write for them!! They think I’m so smart! I knew they loved me for more than just my looks! Okay, so this issue, I’m going to tell you about the Kitten Kraze going on here at Alchemy!! All I hear, day in and day out is about cats and kittens. Now, we all know that dogs are the faithful, loving and loyal companions while cats sit around bullying dogs, causing fights, bossing their humans around and making a dramatic impact on our native bird populations not to mention the coyote population (yes they have an effect there too). But… (continued on page 2)

Life on the Run- Rollo’s Story
More Kitten Kraze!!
On October 31, 2012 Rollo came in to our lives at Alchemy. He was
brought to us by a Good Samaritan from state route 30 in Hanoverton,
Ohio as a wandering stray. But Rollo was different than other strays.
He was microchipped, twice. The first microchip we scanned was
registered through HomeAgain. This lead us right to his current owner
whom we promptly contacted. She lived in Cincinnati, Ohio and informed
us that Rollo had been missing for 9 months. She said that she would
arrange transport and call us back. Two weeks of trying to get a hold of the owner again, she finally called back
and came to pick up Rollo. The whole situation felt off to us. We felt sad sending Rollo with owners who didn’t
really want him but legally owned him. And sadly our bad feelings were right, that wasn’t Rollo’s happy
ending. On August 3, 2015 we received a call about a dog with our tag in Cincinnati. We immediately thought
of Rollo (we never forget an unsettled feeling) and sure enough it was. The man was gracious enough to keep
Rollo until our volunteers could arrange transport for him. A few days later, Rollo was back in Salem, Ohio. This
time we were more extensive in our search for Rollo’s owners (we had to be to cover our bases) and we found
out more of his story. We called HomeAgain, all contact numbers for the owner had since been disconnected.
We called the second Microchip Company, Avid. Rollo had been microchipped at a different shelter in April 2011
after he came in as a stray and was estimated to be about 4 years old (this makes him about 8 years old now).
When his time ran out at that shelter, he was transferred to the SPCA in Cincinnati where he was adopted out
by different owners than we knew of, then brought back to the SPCA (reason unknown), then adopted by his
last known owner in December 2011 where he, in May 2012, ended back up at the
SPCA only to be reclaimed by the current owner at that time. This left us with a
long history of multiple owners and many shelter stays and the “current” owner is
unreachable. So here’s our plan! We’ve updated Rollo’s shots and he has been to
the vet. He does have Arthritis and is on medication. We need to find one last
home for Rollo. A home that will keep him home. Currently Rollo is in a foster
home and is being a perfect gentleman, so there are no reasons why this isn’t
feasible! Rollo loves to lounge about and go for short walks. He gets along
perfectly with other pets and doesn’t have any bad habits to speak of! PLEASE
contact us if you would like to adopt Rollo or help sponsor his care.
it’s actually not the cats fault. Owners don’t even realize the damage they are doing by letting their cats run around not spayed and neutered. Unaltered and uncared for cats do all of the abovementioned and other hazardous things like transmit parasites and diseases not just to other cats but potentially dogs and humans too! Did you know that cats can even get things like rabies and distemper if they don’t have their shots?? Yikes! So a word to the wise from the wise, spay and neuter your cats and only let them outside with supervision. Now I know what some of you are thinking… “there is no way my cat will stay inside and I don’t have time to supervise!” Well give Alchemy a call, they would be happy to provide you with information on cost efficient solutions to keeping up with your pet’s health care. That way when they do go outside they can be protected from most common parasites and disease and not bring home kittens either! So, prevention talk aside, Alchemy has been slammed this season with kittens! Unfortunately we are not set up for mass intake but our community has demanded us to be. Currently we are housing about 70 adult cats and 40 kittens. We took in over 80 kittens this season so as you see quite a few have been adopted which is great! But to gain full perspective, Alchemy Acres hasn’t even been able to break even with cost of care in turn for adoption fees. You see, my Alchemy family takes in the special cases like me so all the kittens and cats coming in are either nursing or sickly and need medical care. In fact, flea preventative alone for all these cats cost over $2,000 a month!! And that’s just the cats! What about the dogs?!?! That doesn’t include dewormers, parasite tests, disease tests, check-ups, medications and vaccines and I could go on and on. So make sure to adopt and/or sponsor a kitten this season (or a dog). Let’s just say it’s your community duty! If you’ve seen a stray cat and didn’t help it, now is your chance. If we (and by “we” I mean you humans because “we” dogs don’t have pockets or thumbs) ALL take a little bit of action, it would make a great difference rather than a few of us trying to take on the whole community’s responsibility and only making a small dent in a big problem. Keep an eye out for the potential kittens you can adopt or sponsor throughout the newsletter; they’ll be labeled as Kitten Kraze! We’ll, I’ve done my duty (don’t panic, I spell checked and it says duty as in job not the other duty)! I hope you enjoy this issue of Alchemy News and are able to help with the Kitten Kraze! Now off to bark at people, demand my way and take a nap!
Buckeye Continued
Kitten Kraze!!
Callie and Cooper are in need of a home much sooner
than later! They were surrendered when their owner
had to move for work and the new home wouldn’t
allow pets. Cooper is super loving and playful. He is a
social butterfly! Callie is a bit more shy when people
meet her but once she knows you she is absolutely
lovely. Both kitties are beautiful and only 3 years old.
Unfortunately Callie is suffering from depression
which is only curable by a home. Please help us find
Callie and Cooper’s fur-ever home!
