REMINDER SOCIETY SALES - DNA TESTING

DNA CONDITIONS OF ENTRY

● All cattle entering Society Sales (with the exception of calves at foot) will

require a DNA profile (Sire or Parentage) and the three genetic defect test

(Hypotrichosis, Diluter and Idiophathic Epilepsy).

● All DNA results to be lodged with the Society prior to the Sale date.

● Carriers of any of the three genetic defects will be ineligible for entry to the

Sale.

● All cattle must have a DNA sample lodged with the Society no later than

close of entry.*

* PLEASE NOTE: – if a hair sample is submitted less than three weeks

prior to close of entry, the Laboratory (Weatherbys) will only be able to

test the sample once. If the sample does not produce a result, then

the animal in question will not be permitted to enter the Sale. Please

also note that we have had an increasing number of re-tests in recent months.

A REMINDER OF THE

DNA TESTING TIMETABLE

* Samples lodged with the Society by the 1st of a month should generate a result by the end of the month.

* Samples lodged with the Society after the 1st of a month should generate a result by the end of the next month.

Please note that both of the above statements depend upon the hair samples submitted being of the required quality to achieve a result:

i.e. Samples must be:

●plucked so as to provide a reasonable quantity of hair follicles.

●clean – we are finding an increasing number of occasions where

samples are not and replacements have to be requested.

DNA TESTING

A reminder to Members of the costs relating to DNA testing:-

£

● Standard Profile including Sire Verification and Three Defects 36.00 (5% discount if 20 or more animals are tested at the same time).

● Standard Profile including Sire Verification and possibly Parentage Verification (10% discount if 10 or more animals are tested at the same time). 22.50 This test will be sufficient in respect of animals whose parents have tested free of defects thereby achieving (PVF) status.

● Standard Profile (including Sire Verification), Three Defects and 50.00 Polled test.

● Polled test in isolation 18.00

● Additional Sire/Dam testing. 3.50

● To upload overseas DNA results in respect of imported genetics 3.00 (a charge per sample).

ALL FEES SUBJECT TO VAT

In the event of repeat hair samples being required for a re-test due to no result, the above fees will apply again.

CARE TO BE TAKEN WHEN COLLECTING SAMPLES

Your attention is drawn to the fact that we have had more than one incident occurring where animals have been excluded and on re-testing it has been found that the original hair samples submitted were labelled incorrectly.

This not only results in extra clerical work at the office but also creates a considerable amount of stress for the individual concerned and additional charges due to the necessity to re-test the animals involved.

Members are therefore urged to take great care when placing their hair samples in the pouches provided, ensuring that the correct hair samples are placed in the correct pouches.

CHAIRMAN OF COUNCIL 2018-2020

Mr. Robin Irvine, “Graceland Herefords”, Co. Armagh, Northern Ireland, has been duly elected as Chairman of the Hereford Society Council for the ensuing three years 2018-20.

Robin has served on Council for a number of years, including a term as President in 2007 and as Chairman in 2009-11.

Commenting after his appointment, a delighted Mr. Irvine stated, "The development of the Hereford Breed in recent years has been tremendous – whether we measure it in terms of pedigree registrations or in the £millions earned in premiums from Hereford Branded Beef.

“The rise in popularity of the Hereford Breed has been a long and positive journey. However, there is still much to be done – we need to build on the strong links through the supply chain and will continue to develop the Breed through effective strategies, embracing the evolving technologies available to the Pedigree Beef Sector. These are challenges for myself as Chairman and our new Council – we take office at a time of tremendous opportunity for the Breed and I very much look forward to the next three years."

ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING

Thursday, 22nd November

COMMENTS ARISING FROM FEBRUARY COUNCIL MEETING 2018

Council

The first meeting of the new Council opened with a full attendance of all 16 elected members. Breed President, Jonathan Moorhouse, extended a special welcome to Mike Harris, Martin Jenkins, Philip Vincent, Non Thorne, Glenn Pritchard and Tom Harrison who were attending their first Council meeting. Robin Irvine was duly elected as Chairman for the ensuing three year term in office.

Council Members were given a full tour of Hereford House including all tenant offices and the Society’s car park which provide an important income stream to the Society - equivalent to almost 90% of Membership subscriptions. The Council discussed the commercial relationship with tenants and the current state of the property. An investment programme to maintain and upgrade the fabric of the building will be considered at future meetings.

UK Hereford Youth

Emma Smith of UK Hereford Youth (UKHY) attended the meeting and gave an update on the group’s activities and finances.

A report from Emma can be found elsewhere within this Newsletter.

DNA & Genetic Defects Testing

Council undertook to investigate the possibilities of reducing the turnaround time for DNA and Genetic Defects testing. They considered a report on Hyportrichosis tests and discussed strategies to move towards the elimination of this trait from the National herd.

Membership

A review of Member activity indicated an increase in transfers of 6.8% over the past 12 months – indicating a continuing demand for pedigree animals.

Lidl

James Sage (JS) and David Deakin (DD) reported on a successful meeting with Lidl which included discussion on their Hereford Branded Beef. They highlighted the potential number of animals available to processors based on current BCMS and APHIS figures. During the calendar year 2017, Hereford sired progeny have increased by 7.7% from the previous year as recorded by BCMS & APHIS combined and by 98% over the past eight years.

JS & DD also suggested opportunities for collaborative work such as quality endorsement programmes, sponsorship and providing support at events for example Summer Agricultural Shows.

Harper Adams University – Beef Trial

A report on the Grazing Trial can be found elsewhere within this Newsletter.

BEEF EXPO 2018 - FRIDAY 25th MAY

To be held at

Halls Shrewsbury Livestock Auction Centre,

Bowman Way, Shawbury Turn, Battlefield,

Shrewsbury, SY4 3DR.

This event is the annual highlight of the Beef Industry calendar with

organisers looking to build upon the huge success of last year’s event at Stoneleigh. Bringing together the very best in British commercial and pedigree cattle, equipment, ground-breaking developments, and show classes for everyone involved in the industry, NBA Beef Expo is a celebration and exploration of everything British Beef has to offer.

The NBA Beef Expo is considered a major showcase for Pedigree and Commercial Breed Societies which want to promote the quality of their cattle. Thanks to this, the NBA Beef Expo displays some of the finest examples of British breeding anywhere in the UK. Farmers, exhibitors,

agricultural companies and interested members of the public also use the annual event to network, do business and share knowledge, as well as seeing the crème de la crème of British beef cattle.

Over the years the NBA Beef Expo has become a highlight in the beef farming calendar. Representing all the industry has to offer in terms of new developments, breeding expertise and celebrating the work of all beef farmers across the UK regardless of breed or method. The event attracts experts and industry leaders looking to educate both the farming community and the public, encouraging respect and innovation from all corners of the market.

The Hereford Cattle Breeders’ Association will be supplying a range of cattle for the Stand and there will also be a ‘Farm Walk’ the day prior to the event at the Shraden Herd of M.J. & H.M. Timmis, Moor Farm, Ruyton Road, Baschurch, Shrewsbury, Shropshire, SY4 2BA

We would urge Members to make every effort to attend both the event on the 25th and Farm Walk, thereby supporting the Breed.

HEREFORD GRAZING TRIAL

The CEO and Mr. D. Deakin, accompanied by Mr. Robert Thomas and Mr. Bernard Rimmer, had attended an Open Day at Harper Adams University on the 20th December, 2017 when 50/60 farmers from Cornwall, Hampshire, Northumberland and Cumbria were also present to see how the ‘crossing trial’ was proceeding.

The Trial is progressing well, with the Hereford x Holstein/Friesian crosses producing a very satisfactory performance. Mr. Simon Marsh, Senior Beef Lecturer at Harper Adams dubbed the trial ‘A Brexit Beef System’, stating that he was very impressed with how the Herefords were performing, especially when compared to their traditional system of Continental x Holstein/Friesian. Following a Summer at grass, the Hereford x cattle showed an increased margin of £201 per head over the Continental x cattle.

It is anticipated that the Trial will finish in late Spring/early Summer, when the Society would use the information available at that time to promote the Breed.

Breed Requirements in Respect of

Imported Genetics

It is important for Members importing genetics to arrange with vendors

for the provision of documentation required by the U.K. Hereford Cattle

Society, so as to allow the acceptance of imported animals into the U.K.

Herd Book.

It is also essential that the vendor in the country of origin provides their

domestic Society with details of genetics being sold for export. Please

note the responsibility for ensuring that this action is taken must lie with

the breeder purchasing the genetics.

Listed below are the documents that The (U.K.) Hereford Cattle Society

requires:-

1. Five Extended Pedigree (In the case of Embryos, both Sire and Donor

Dam must be provided).

2. Official Export Certificate issued by the recognised registration

authority providing full details of both breeder/vendor and purchaser.

3. A Certificate of Freedom from all known Genetic Abnormalities,

together with test results for Hypotrichosis, Diluter/Rat-tail and

Idiopathic Epilepsy. (Cost of testing if not already done is £43.20.)

4. Should any female be in-calf, the same information as 1 to 3 above will

be required in respect of the Service Sire/s.

5. In the case of ALL Genetic Imports (Live Animals, Service Sires, Semen,

and Sires & Donor Dams of Embryos), a MICROSATELLITE DNA Profile

must be provided (showing Parentage Verification) together with the

test results of the three Genetic Defects, as stated in 3 above.

6. In the case of Horned genetics, a Certificate confirming clearance of

poll animals in the first six generations, the subject animal being the

first.

7. In the case of Embryos, a Certificate/Form issued by the Embryo

Company confirming the identity and details of the Sires used and

Donor Dams.

Initial Entry fee of £30-00 (VAT inclusive) to be paid per animal (including service sire/donor dam/semen).

INSEMINATION RULES

For Members’ Information

Insemination Certificate

The Breeder shall be responsible for supplying to the Society with each

Birth Notification Form, a Certificate signed by the Veterinary Surgeon or

Inseminator authorised by the Society of the Name and Tag No. of the bull

and female concerned and the date. The Breeder shall ensure that the

cow has not had access to a bull for 30 days before and 30 days after the

insemination.

Approval of A.I. Centres and Inseminators

All AI Centres and Inseminators must be approved by the Society.

Approval is subject to:-

AI Centres – A Defra Licence having been issued to the Centre.

Inseminators other than those employed by an approved Centre:

A Certificate of Competence must be lodged with the Society having

been issued by an approved AI Centre.

TRANSFERS

Please note that in the event of a request being received from a buyer to

transfer an animal into their name, so long as the request is accompanied

by the Society’s Official Pedigree Warranty Certificate, the transfer will be

processed.

Any breeder selling stock that they do not wish to transfer should ensure

that the buyer is made aware at the point of sale and the Pedigree Warranty

Certificate forwarded to the Office for cancellation.

SEMEN EXPORTS

Would Members please note that most Countries to which semen is exported insist that the donor bull must have been DNA parentage verified not just sire verified.

Therefore, should you have semen in storage that is eligible for export, please ensure that the dam of the donor bull has been DNA profiled.

EXTRACT FROM ARTIFICIAL

THE IMPORTANCE OF ACCURACY OF EBVs AND THE REGULAR SUBMISSION OF DATA

Discussed recently at a Council Meeting, it was agreed that there was a serious need to address the subject of the “Accuracy of EBVs” and the best way of doing so is to ensure that all data is recorded on a regular basis, i.e.

Birth Weights - Calving Codes

200 Day Weights - 400 Day Weights

600 Day Weights

and, if the Herd is of a sufficient size, to create effective Contemporary Comparison Groups

Scanning

------------------------------------------------

ABRI, when asked what the effect would be to the accuracy of an animal’s EBV if Raw Data such as Birth Weights and Calving Codes were recorded for the animal, have responded that:-

“If the animal’s measurement can be compared in an ‘effective’ group, the accuracy will be increased.

As a guide, it is suggested the Calving Ease (CE) accuracy would increase by 4% to 6% whereas Birth Weight (BW) accuracy would increase by 10% to 15% if the animal is measured for the relevant trait”.

This therefore highlights the importance of regularly submitting Performance Data at every opportunity, thereby increasing the accuracy of the EBVs reported.

NORTH DEVON SHOW

Wednesday, 1st August, 2018

We have been asked to inform Members that the above Show holds specific Breed Classes for Herefords.

Anyone interested should contact the Show Society on: [email protected] or phone the Show Office on 01769 573852 – Assistant Secretary: Mrs. Sarah Dart.

RANDOM CALF INSPECTIONS

We wish to remind members that a number of incidences have arisen where the

inspection weights submitted of the calves selected have led to the suspension

of the registration of the calf due to an unacceptable Daily Liveweight Gain.

However, on follow-up inspections it has been found that the cause is due to the

inaccuracy of the scales used.

We therefore urge members, when called upon to accommodate a Random Calf

Inspection to take extreme care and ensure that the scales used are checked

before weighing the calf.

Should any further such incidences arise, the Council may have to consider

introducing a charge for second inspections to cover the expenses incurred.

ONLINE REGISTRATIONS

There has been a great increase in the number of Registrations now being submitted “Online”.

Members will find instructions within this Newsletter on using the “Online” programme and those who adopt this method will make a saving of £2.64 per calf registered.

THE LATE MR. BILL TANNER

We sadly have to report the death on the 21st February, 2018 of one of Australia’s most respected Hereford breeders, Mr. Bill Tanner, formerly of Hillcrest Herefords, who had many UK friends in the Breed. “Hillcrest was established in 1946 by the Tanner Family in Willow Tree, New South Wales.

Bill was a Life Member of the Hereford Cattle Society, and had officiated as a Judge at some Shows in the UK. He was Chairman of the Australian Hereford Society from 1973-1978 and was one of the longest serving Council Members, spending 33 years on the Board.

He was a member of the Tanner family (whose connection with Hereford Cattle goes back to at least 1871) who have had a long and highly regarded association with the UK, and were responsible for the “Prunella” cow line.

GUIDE TO JUDGES ON JUDGING PROCEDURE

A PRACTICAL GUIDE TO CATTLE JUDGING

Firstly, refer to the Schedule and check the Classification of each Class.

Walk the ring and decide where best to view the animals and to stand them.

Check with your Steward that the animals enter the ring in age order (oldest first, etc.).

View the profile of the animals from a distance as they parade around the ring, checking their motion and size (compare against an object in the background) about two laps of the ring.

Stand in a corner of the ring and watch the animals coming towards you, preferably uphill, then away on the level, looking for fore and hind legs in line and that foot placement is correct i.e. the rear hoof should land in the mark left by the front one. Movement should be smooth and free flowing.

Ask your Steward to stand the cattle in a line, ideally face up the slope if there is one and with the sun (if sunny) on your back. Then walk along behind checking and comparing, likewise along the front. Then proceed to handle the animals from front to back checking on condition and muscling and any reproduction issues, i.e. udder development in females and testicles on bulls.

By this time you should have a pretty good idea of your placings, then ask the competitors to walk around the ring again and pull individual animals into the line in the order you want them.

When you have completed the line-up, just check that you are happy with your placings before handing out the prize-cards and remember when doing so to thank the competitors for coming and make positive comments about their cattle.

If making comments on the microphone, remember to thank the organisers for asking you to judge.

Points to look for: Balance, correct structure, muscling, locomotion, well grown and good size for age, waste free (type the market is looking for), coat find and smooth (“hard coat, hard feeder”), colour and markings to conform to Breed type.

DO: Dress suitably for the occasion, i.e. suit or jacket and always a tie.

DO N0T: Enter into long dialogue with the competitors in the ring. Wear wellington boots unless absolutely necessary. Forget to thank your Steward.

PAYING YOUR ACCOUNTS BY BACS

(BANK AUTOMATED CLEARING SYSTEM)

Just a reminder that a number of Members have chosen to pay their accounts by “BACS”.

“BACS” is ideal for making regular automated payments, helping reduce costs of administration and improve financial control.

As the process is electronic, it removes the need to write cheques which can be costly and is often subject to human error.

Payments can be made much later in a business day – up to 9 p.m. and are cleared within two business days to any Bank Account.

Should you wish to pay your accounts using this method, you will need to approach your Bank who will require the following details:-

Society Bank: - National Westminster

Account Name: - The Hereford Cattle Society

Sort Code: - 53 50 41

Account Number: - 05613019

It would assist us that, when setting up your payments by this method, you request that your Bank use your Society Membership Number as a means of identification in addition to your name.

You should also ensure that we are informed that you will be paying your accounts by “BACS” and that you advise us on each occasion a payment is being transmitted. This can simply be an email at the time your payment is made.

Details relating to “BACS” now appear on

all Invoices being sent out from Hereford House

MAKE USE OF THE

“ONLINE REGISTRATION SYSTEM”

Members are encouraged to make use of the “ONLINE REGISTRATION” facility available on the Society’s Website under the heading “MEMBERS ONLY”.

To access this facility for the first time you will need to contact the office to obtain an ‘access code’.

Once you have entered “ONLINE” you will be requested to create your own “Password” for future access. You will find a number of facilities available to you as a Member of the Society which are all fully explained.

Once logged onto the file you will have the ability to submit Calf Notifications/Registrations online and the basic instructions to do so are:-

● Click on the link that says ‘online transactions’.

● Then click on ‘create a new batch’.

● Then select the appropriate batch type (Calf Registration/Notification). At this stage Recording Members can also choose an option to submit their Performance data.

● When the batch has been created you will need to click on the ‘add button’ to record/register each animal that is included in the batch.

● Once created additional animals and information can be added/changed until such time that you submit the batch to the Society. The batch will remain in a holding file until you submit it.

● Please remember that, having created a batch, it must be submitted to the Society within 27 days of the oldest calf on the file otherwise late fees will automatically be imposed.

● The information available to you includes the Sire and Dam of each calf, details of which can be accessed by either –

(A) Selecting the animal from a drop down list, OR (B) Manually entering the Identity Number (Tag No.) of the animal.

The drop down list of Sires will include all those you have used in the last two years.

The list of Dams will consist of active cows currently in your ownership, together with breeding age heifers.

REMEMBER TO CLICK “SUBMIT” WHEN ENTERING REGISTRATIONS ON-LINE

Members using the on-line facility to register their calves are asked to note that they must click “SUBMIT” before signing off.

If this is not done the data does not come through to the Society for processing, therefore running the risk of late fees being imposed.
