The Spirit of Ramadan

Assalamu-alaikum Cleveland!

T he spirit of Ramadan is not an abstract concept. On the contrary, it is very much a tangible entity that can be physically experienced. The spiritual bounce in our

steps during this month is clearly evident. All of a sudden, ibaadah becomes easier, the prayers at the Masjids are well-attended, and the atmosphere is more cordial. It is a pleasure to go to the masjid, and find it packed with brothers and sisters, out to take advantage of the annual Islamic mega-event! Ramadan is a gift from Allah. F aced with a constant struggle to keep their chil-dren on the straight path of Islam, many parents, for the fifth year running, have found an able ally

in the Al Ihsan School of Excellence. The American Educational system, one of the many great attributes of this country, has much to offer to its students. Packaged with the educational offerings, unfortunately, are some drawbacks that make it difficult for a Muslim student to strike the right balance. This is where Al Ihsan steps in. It couples American education with Islamic values, offering the best of both worlds. It also provides a protective environment to the children at their tender age, before they are ready to fend for themselves. The goal is not to isolate the students from the real world. Rather it is to prepare them for it by inculcating Islamic values that will impart the ability to discern between the good and bad.

About Al Ihsan Al Ihsan is the only full-time Islamic School, located in the City of Cleveland. It is accredited with the State of Ohio Board of Education as a Private Charter School licensed to teach grades K-12. The curriculum is based on the State of Ohio mandate, and enriched with Islamic studies. The school also accepts CSTP vouchers from Cleveland residents. Al Ihsan is located on 4600 Rocky River Drive, and shares its facilities with Masjid Al-Islam. For further details regarding the school and the curriculum, please contact the principal of Al-Ihsan, Sr. Loretta Abbasi at (216)676-5006.

Al Ihsan School in its 5th year Mission Statement

Al Ihsan School strives to work together with parents, students, and the community to create an environment for academic excellence and moral values. We train our students to: Think critically Engage in local and global issues from a strong

moral standpoint Arm themselves academically to excel in an increas-

ingly competitive world Become effective citizens in a democratic society

TRANSPORTATION:

School bus transportation is currently available for students living in North Olmsted and Westlake School Districts.

Message from the School Board

Assalamu-alaikum. All of us on the School Board are honored to have the opportunity to steer the Al Ihsan School towards excellence. It is a great responsibility, and we will be accountable to Allah (SWT) for the ac-tions we take. Inshallah, our commitment to the school will be driven by two main goals - the pleasure of Allah, and the future of our students. Islamic Schools offer a unique combination of the best of the American educational system within the bounda-ries of Islamic values. However, the success of Islamic schools is contingent upon the support of the Muslim community. We, therefore, ask for your co-operation, involvement, and partnership in making Al Ihsan the best school in the Cleveland area. We strongly believe that this is only possible when the parents, the Muslim community, and the school management work together as a single cohesive unit to achieve clearly-defined goals. As we embark on this journey to provide our next gen-eration with the best of both this world and the hereafter, we look forward to your partnership. Together, we will provide our children what they deserve - a well-rounded education necessary to become good Muslims and Americans.

M ai Hamed was set ablaze by her husband on Dec. 24, 2003. She survived with second and third degree burns on 90 percent of her body,

lost her vision in one eye, and both hands. The 26 year-old Palestinian-American is the epitome of a strong, courageous Muslim woman who has survived a horren-dous obstacle with faith, prayers and support from her beloved mother Fatima and compassion from complete strangers. As part of her therapy at MetroHealth Hospital, Mai learned to paint using a universal cuff which allows her to hold a paintbrush. Her vividly colored paintings will be showcased at a local art gallery to raise funds to buy prosthetic hands.

The Muslim community is encouraged to attend the opening reception of Mai’s art show on Friday Nov.11 at the Inside Outside Gallery in Tremont, located at 2688 W. 14th St. Cleveland, OH 44113. Islamic Center conducts Elections under new Constitution

(By: Br. Humayun Arif)

A t the Islamic Center of Cleveland in Parma, elec-tions were held September 25 under the guid-ance of a new Constitution. This Constitution

was the first revision in over ten years, and was approved this past summer in quorum by the Center’s general as-sembly of members. The revised Constitution has re-tained the existing organization structure of the Islamic Center based on four bodies: the General Assembly, composed of all dues paying members; the Council of Elders, consisting of five permanent members; an Execu-tive Committee, comprised of 5 elected officers and the Imam as a non-voting member; and a Board of Trustees composed of fifteen elected members.

The major difference in this Constitution is the formation of nine empowered and responsible Committees. The purpose in forming these Committees is to shift the focus of the organization’s responsibility from a few officers to the wider community of members. This shift in focus will draw upon the wide membership community to in-volve themselves in the Center’s activities, with the in-tent of service for the benefit of the community. The Imam will be responsible for the Da’wah Committee and the President-Elect will chair the Operations & Finance Committee, responsible for the day-to-day operations.

The Board of Trustees will elect chairpersons to serve on six other committees in the areas of education, social, membership, communications, youth and sports, and women’s activities.

These elections pitted candidates for all positions of the Executive and the Board of Trustees. Following the pas-sage of the Constitution, and under the new rules, an Election Committee was formed to coordinate the nomi-nation process and conduct the elections in a neutral way, without conflicts of interest. A condition levied on this Election Committee was that they would not themselves compete for positions.

Nomination forms were sent out to the members, and a list of candidates formed. Announcement of the final list of candidates was also mailed out, stating the time allot-ted for balloting. Finally, on election day, candidates were invited to briefly speak to the audience, introducing themselves and their message for getting elected. Quo-rum was established and all proceedings conducted in a well coordinated manner. The list of elected officers and trustees is available from the ICC website at www.iccleveland.org.

Help keep this Masjid open!

(By: Br. Zahid Siddiqi)

Assalamu Alaikum, Ramadan Mubarak

M any of you might know that over the period of last 3-4 years Cleveland has received some-where around 300 to 400 refugees from Af-

ghanistan, Iberia, Iran, Somalia and Turkey. They have come here under a U.S. government program for refugee re- settlement. Catholic Charities of Cleveland, con-tracted by the government, has done a marvelous job of helping these guests navigate through the difficult proc-esses of settling in an alien land. The Islamic Community of Cleveland had partnered with the Catholic Charities to help in this process, as most of the refugees were Muslims. About 75 percent are women and children. Almost all, including the men, were illiterate as far as English language is concerned. Even now, after intensive English language training, most barely get by. Almost all of them are devout Muslims and thus have an urgent need for a house of worship. They are especially concerned about bringing up their children without a Mosque close by so that they do not lose their Islamic identity and character. These refugees primarily live around the old Mosque at 9400 Detroit Avenue (Masjid Rasul Allah Islamic Soci-ety or MRI Society), now vacant since the Shia Commu-nity has moved their place of worship to a location in Brecksville. The refugees would like to acquire this Mosque for themselves and keep it open as a Masjid. The asking price is around $100,000; the sellers are awaiting an appraisal of the property. All we are trying

to raise is the down payment of around $20,000. The MRI Society has kindly agreed to carry the loan. The refugees have already moved in and are using the facility right now for just the cost of the utilities and the insurance. They are observing daily Ramadan activities, including the Taraweeh prayers. This request is for donations to support this worthwhile cause. As it has been agreed upon by different fiq’h rul-ings, one is allowed to give the Zakat ul Mal towards the purchase or establishment of a Masjid. Ramadan is the month of giving to charity and Allah’s causes, please be generous. MRI Society has a tax ID number and all donations are deductible from one’s income. So, please write the checks to MRI Society and put a notation on the memo line that the donation should go towards the Mosque for the Refugees. Mail the checks to me at the address given below, that way I can keep an accurate tally of the in-coming funds. Insha Allah with your support and Allah SWT’s bless-ings the refugees dream shall come true. Please call me for any clarification or for more information. I thank you in anticipation of your support. Zahid Siddiqi 13963 Pearlview Drive Strongsville, OH 44136 (440) 238 3796

Editors’ Note: CAIR Ohio reported that a group of Muslims representing several Cleveland area mosques met on September 29, 2005 to discuss ways to keep Masjid Rasoul Allah open. The issue of continuing the mosque arose after the owners (Mohammad Rasoul Allah Islamic Society) purchased a new center in Brecksville. The building housing the mosque on 9400 Detroit Avenue also has historical signifi-cance, having once served as the site for what evolved later into the Islamic Center of Cleveland.

Huffaz lead Taraweeh prayers across Cleveland

Y ou know that it is Ramadan when the mosques are packed in the evenings, and you get to hear the Quran being recited in its entirety during the

Taraweeh prayers. It is a pleasure to hear the Quran be-ing recited from memory - the smooth flow of the verses is mesmerizing. Only a Hafiz can deliver such a dulcet recitation, as a Hafiz is he who has memorized the en-tire Quran. The Cleveland Muslim caught up with the Huffaz (plural of Hafiz) leading the Taraweeh prayers across Greater Cleveland. We posed a few questions to them. We found each Hafiz to be extremely humble despite his phenomenal achievement. Here, we share some of the details regarding the Huffaz. Most of us already know Hafiz Abdur Rashid of Mas-jid Al-Islam. He is originally from Bangladesh, and has been the Imam of the masjid since 2000. Imam Abdur Rashid is an Islamic scholar, having completed a rigor-ous 12-yr Aalim course in Khulna, Bangladesh. He be-came a Hafiz at the tender age of 12. It took him 2 years to complete hifz (memorization). During our meeting, the Imam expressed his concern regarding the poor at-tendance at the masjid during the 5 daily prayers. He urged local muslims to make a serious attempt to pray in jamaah at the masjid regularly. Hafiz Majid is leading the Taraweeh prayers at Masjid Al-Nur. Imam Majid is from Hyderabad, India (which happens to be our hometown as well). He is 25 years old, and completed his hifz when he was 17. He has been leading Taraweeh prayers for the past 8 years. He is the Imam at a masjid in India. This is his first visit to the US, and he said that he found the people to be very help-ful and friendly.

The prayers at the Islamic Center of Cleveland are being led by two young Huffaz from the United Kingdom. Hafiz Muhammad Aiyub Jogyat is from London, and is 19 years old. He completed his hifz in two years at the age of 14 at the Leytonstone Mosque. He is studying English and Sociology at a university in Blackburn. He is also enrolled in the 6-yr Aalim course that will lead to a Ph.D. degree. Br. Aiyub enjoys driving, table tennis, and cricket. He was on his school’s cricket team - batted at no. 4, and was the wicket-keeper as well. Br. Aiyub has also been teaching Islamic studies to the Weekend School students at the ICC. The second Hafiz at the ICC is 16 year old Hafiz Mohammad Yunus from Blackburn. He took 1.5 years to complete his hifz at age 12. He just graduated from high school, and is currently in the “A level,” studying Biology and Chemistry. He intends to pursue a career in Medicine. Br. Yunus plays soccer, and enjoys swim-ming, driving, and cycling. This is his second visit to the US, having led the prayers in Oklahoma City last year. One of the Huffaz at The Uqbah Mosque is Hafiz Nagi Salem Faal from Mauritania in West Africa. Hafiz Nagi is 25 years old, and has been leading the Taraweeh prayers since completing hifz 9 years back. Br. Nagi runs a business in Mauritania. This is his first visit to the US, and he is thankful to the community for its hospitality. Hafiz Mohammad Ghanama is the second hafiz lead-ing the prayers at Uqbah. He is a resident in Surgery at the Cleveland Clinic. He is originally from Jordan. Hafiz Bishr Al-Dabagh also helped lead the Taraweeh prayers at Uqbah. He is from Flint, MI, and is a medical & research student at the Case Medical school pursuing his MD and Ph.D. degrees. Br. Bishr is 21 years old and completed his hifz three years back. He has conducted research in the fields of Biology, Genetics, Orthopedics, and Opthalmology. The prayers at MACE are being led by Hafiz Abdul Wajid. He completed his hifz at the Darul-uloom in Buf-falo, NY. Br. Abdul Wajid’s family lives in Shaker Heights. He is currently studying Shariah in Toronto. May Allah reward all the huffaz for helping us recite the entire Quran during the Taraweeh prayers.

Fasting for a day keeps stereotypes away from non-Muslims Muslim Student Associations raise money and awareness by asking Non-Muslims to go hungry for a change!

(By: Sr. Arooj Ashraf)

PAGE 8 CLEVELAND MUSLIM VOLUME 1, ISSUE 2

"O ye who believe, fasting is prescribed for you as it was prescribed for people before you (the Jews and Chris-tians) so that you will (learn how to attain) self con-straint," (The Holy Quran 2:183-185).

T he Muslim Student Associations of Cleveland State University, Case Western Reserve Univer-sity, and Kent State University combined re-

sources to host the Third Annual Fast-a-thon at Thwing Hall on Oct. 8.

The MSAs invited their non-Muslim peers, staff and fac-ulty to experience the miracle of Ramadan by fasting for a day like Muslims. Two-hundred and fifty people pledged to fast and follow Islamic guidelines to the best of their abilities and attended the iftar dinner at Case.

Ten local businesses sponsored the event by donating one dollar for each non-Muslim who pledged to fast. “We have collected over $650 and are collecting more,” said Cleveland State MSA President, Ahmad Muhied-dine.

He said the purpose of fast-a-thon is to promote aware-ness of Islam and share the blessings of Ramadan while raising money for the needy in America. Gausia Chow-dury, Case MSA public relations chair put the Cleveland need in perspective; “In Cleveland alone, there are 360 calls for emergency food in a single day,” she said. The money will be donated to America’s Second Harvest and Chowdury said 100 percent of the donations will benefit victims of hurricanes Katrina and Rita.

The idea of fast-a-thon was promoted by MSA National several years ago and has become and annual event with many MSA chapters in the US and Canada.

For Abrahim Farraj, Vice-President Cleveland State MSA, fast-a-thon was an opportunity for non-Muslims to experience Islam as a religion of peace. He said the event does not just promote good food and interfaith interac-tion, it is also a testament of the heights the Muslim community can reach by working together.

“For outsiders it’s only a dinner, but for the MSA offi-cers it's like a harmony of hard work and dedication that leads up to this example of how interconnected the Mus-

lim community is,” Farraj said.

Guests enjoyed a variety of ethnic food; sheesh kabobs, hummus, rice pulau, chicken and pasta. They were in-vited to watch as Muslims prayed Maghrib in a separate hall and listened to Arabic tunes as they ate.

The non-Muslim participants left with a great overview of Islam and understanding of Ramadan. Linda Annette, a Cleveland State student said she found fasting very challenging and wondered why Christians have not maintained the tradition of fasting like the Muslims and Jews. She came prepared with a list of questions about Islam and Muslims and said she wanted to meet “real live Muslims”. On top of her list were the most fre-quently asked questions about Islam, women’s rights, difference between Allah and God, influence of culture and traditions on Islam.

Annett said she wanted to promote understanding of Is-lam. Her 11- year-old son had never heard of Ramadan and when he questioned why she could not eat she seized the opportunity to share Ramadan with him.

Krystle Suszter a nursing student at Case said although she was skeptical at first, she decided to fast to see if she could do it. “It was good to know that I could do it and I am more disciplined than I thought,” she said. Suszter said she is proud she can step out of her comfort zone to experience something millions of people do every day, by religious expression or necessity.

She says there is a lack of education that divides people, “I am standing up and saying we are connected.” Susz-ter seized the opportunity to educate her friends and said the domino effect of knowledge is interesting. She is Lutheran but she says she occasionally fasts with her Catholic father. “I have a great deal more respect for you guys,” she said.

Guest speakers Burheem Baker and Luqman Williams shared their experience and perspectives on Ramadan, importance of fasting to Muslims and the rewards. Their speeches helped eliminate several stereotypes Annette had of Muslims. Annette said she found her experience interesting and educational and will share her experience with other non-Muslims.

Dawn (A poem by Nesha Usmani)

Softly, my eyes flutter open,

Sleep sticking to my head

The slow, heavy, stagnancy

Of my breathing

Technology’s glitter in the darkness bled,

My eyelids fall like a window slammed,

And swing open with the speed of the rising sun,

Soft, sharply curled locks bend and fit the pillows form,

Pressed between my head and mat-tress,

Comfort could not allow a storm.
