There is a “romantic” tendency in some Christians—a tendency which seeks Christ not in love of those flesh-and-blood brothers and sisters with whom we live and work, but in some as yet unrealized ideal of “brotherhood”. The Tenth Sunday after Trinity

August 8, 2021

Those of us today who seek to be Christians, and who have not yet

risen to the level of full maturity in Christ, tend unfortunately to

take one or other of the debased forms of love for the action of the

Spirit of God and the love of Christ. It is this failure to attain to full

maturity in love which keeps divisions alive in the world.

There is a “romantic” tendency in some Christians—a tendency

which seeks Christ not in love of those flesh-and-blood brothers and

sisters with whom we live and work, but in some as yet unrealized

ideal of “brotherhood”. It is always a romantic evasion to turn from

the love of people to the love of love itself: to love people in general

more than individual persons, to love “brotherhood” and “unity”

more than one’s brothers, sisters, neighbors, and associates.

This corruption of love can be romantic also in its love of God. It is

no longer Christ himself that is loved and sought, but perhaps an

objectivised “experience” of Christ, a degree of prayer, a mystical

state. What is loved then ceases to be Christ, but the subjective reac-

tions which are aroused in me by the supposed presence of Christ in

thought of love or prayer.

The romantic tendency leads to a substitution of aestheticism, or

false mysticism, or quietism, for genuine faith and love, and what it

seeks in the Church is not so much reality as a protection against re-

sponsibility. Failing to establish a true dialogue with our brother or

sister in Christ, this fallacy thwarts all efforts at real unity and coop-

eration among Christians.

Disputed Questions, p. 113

Lord Jesus Christ,

open the ears and eyes of

my heart, that I may hear

and understand Thy Word

and do Thy will.

I am a pilgrim on earth;

hide not Thy command-

ments from me.

Take away the covering

from mine eyes, that I may

see wonderful things in

Thy law.

Amen.

P O almighty God, merciful Father,

C I, a poor, miserable sinner, confess unto You all my sins and iniquities with which I have ever

offended You and justly deserved Your temporal and eternal punishment. But I am heartily sorry

for them and sincerely repent of them, and I pray You of Your boundless mercy and for the sake

of the holy, innocent, bitter sufferings and death of Your beloved Son, Jesus Christ, to be gracious

and merciful to me, a poor, sinful being.

P Upon this your confession, I, by virtue of my office, as a called and ordained servant of the Word,

announce the grace of God unto all of you, and in the stead and by the command of my Lord Jesus

Christ I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the T Son and of the Holy Spirit.

PAX DOMINI Jn 20:19 LSB 197

AGNUS DEI Jn 1:29 LSB 198

The Lord’s Supper is celebrated at this congregation in the confession and glad confidence that, as He says, our Lord gives into our

mouths not only bread and wine but His very body and blood to eat and to drink for the forgiveness of sins and to strengthen our union

with Him and with one another. Our Lord invites to His table those who trust His words, repent of all sin, and set aside any refusal to

forgive and love as He forgives and loves us, that they may show forth His death until He comes.

Because those who eat and drink our Lord’s body and blood unworthily do so to their great harm and because Holy Communion is a

confession of the faith which is confessed at this altar, any who are not yet instructed, in doubt or who hold a confession differing from

that of this congregation and The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod, and yet desire to receive the Sacrament, are asked first to speak

with the pastor.

For further study, see Mt 5:23ff;10:32ff; 18:15–35; 26:26–29; 1 Cor 11:17–34.
