The Ten Commandments
Marc Chagall
Eighteenth Sunday after Pentecost
October 4, 2020
GATHERING AROUND GOD’S WORD
Prelude Prelude on Ave Verum Corpus W. A. Mozart
Introit Keep the Sabbath Day John Ness Beck
Keep the Sabbath day to sanctify it, as the Lord, thy God, hath
commanded thee, Holy, Holy, Holy.
**Call to Worship (responsively) Psalm 19
Leader: The law of the LORD is perfect, reviving the soul.
The testimonies of the LORD are sure, making wise the simple.
The precepts of the LORD are right, rejoicing the heart. The
commandment of the LORD is clear, enlightening the eyes. The
fear of the LORD is pure, enduring forever. The ordinances of the
LORD are true and righteous all together. More to be desired are
they than gold, sweeter than the honey and the honeycomb. More
over by them is your servant warned. In keeping them there is
great rewards. Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of
my heart be acceptable to you, O LORD, my rock and my
redeemer.
People: Amen.
**Hymn Holy, Holy, Holy Lord God Almighty #1
The Call to Confession (responsively)
Leader: God has revealed God’s truth to us in the words of the prophets.
God has called and chosen us to serve God’s holy will through the
giving of the law. As people given a great gift, we realize the burden
of being called, and the high standard of representing the God who
has called us. In penitence, let us draw near to God on the mountain
and prepare our minds and hearts to receive what is holy.
People: Amen.
The Litany of Confession (responsively)
Leader: Our cities cry to you for healing.
For a more just distribution of resources and a more equitable
apportionment of opportunity:
For the thwarted expectations of the young and old:
For an end to crime and violence
For the sin of politicization, rancor and division:
For language that vilifies and rhetoric that incites hostility
For lack of striving for the common good:
For all that is unconfessed in every person and every group, we
silence our hearts before you.
People: Lord, have mercy. Christ, have mercy. Lord, have mercy.
Silent Confession
Declaration of Pardon (responsively) 2 Chronicles 7:14-15
Leader: If my people who are called by my name will humble themselves,
will pray, seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, I will
hear from heaven and forgive their sin and heal their land. My
eyes will be open and my ears attentive to their prayers again. I
will be your God and you will be my people. Friends, believe the
good news of the gospel:
People: In Jesus Christ we are forgiven.
**Gloria Patri (sung by Quartet only) #581
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost; as it was in
the beginning is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen, Amen.
Receiving the Peace of Christ (responsively)
2 Corinthians 5:18-20
Leader: God was in Christ reconciling the world to Godself, not counting
our sins against us. God has entrusted us with the message of
reconciliation. We are ambassadors for Christ; God makes God’s
appeal through us. Receive the peace of Christ and live in
harmony with all!
People: Amen.
PROCLAIMING GOD’S WORD
Minute for Mission Andy Ochiabutor
Prayer of Illumination
Scripture Lesson Exodus 20:1-11
Leader: The word of God for the people of God.
People: Thanks be to God!
Solo Come Sunday Duke Ellington
Vince Wallace, soloist
Come Sunday, oh come Sunday, that’s the day. Lord, Dear Lord above,
God Almighty, God of Love, please look down and see my people through.
I believe that God put sun and moon up in the sky. I don’t mind the gray
skies, ‘cause they’re just clouds passing by. Heaven is a goodness time, a
brighter light on high. “Do unto others as you would have them do to
you,” and have a brighter by and by. I believe God is now, was then, and
always will be. With God’s blessing we can make it through eternity. Lord,
Dear Lord above, God Almighty, God of Love, please look down and see
my people through.
Scripture Lesson Exodus 20:12-21
Leader: The word of God for the people of God.
People: Thanks be to God!
Sermon “Rest In Power”
Reverend Dr. David Neff, preaching
RESPONDING TO GOD’S WORD
**Hymn Lord, Prepare Me to be a Sanctuary #701
**Affirmation of Faith (responsively) The Apostles’ Creed
Leader: I believe in God, the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth,
and in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord; who was conceived
by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under
Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead and buried; he descended into
hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into
heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty;
from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I
believe in the Holy Ghost, the holy catholic church, the
communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of
the body; and the life everlasting.
People: Amen.
Welcome and Announcements
Anthem Come and Taste arr. Alice Parker
Come and taste along with me, consolation flowing free, from the Father’s
wealthy throne, sweeter than the honeycomb. I’ll praise God and you
praise God, and we’ll all praise God together; We’ll praise the Lord for
the work that He has done, and we’ll bless His Name forever. All that
comes with free good will make the banquet sweeter still; now I go to
Mercy’s door, asking for a little more. Goodness, running like a stream
through the new Jerusalem, by a constant breaking forth sweetens earth
and heaven both. O return, ye sons of grace, turn and see God’s smiling
face. Hark, He calls backsliders home, then from Him no longer roam.
The Prayers of the People
Prayer Response Let the Words of My Mouth Eric Thiman
Let the words of my mouth, and the meditation of my heart, be acceptable
in thy sight, O Lord, my strength and my redeemer.
THE SACRAMENT OF THE LORD’S SUPPER
THE COVENANT OF UNCONDITIONAL LOVE
The Invitation
Jesus said ‘Do not work for the bread that perishes, but for the bread of
eternal life. The bread of God comes down from heaven and gives life to
the world.’ Jesus said ‘I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will
never be hungry, and whoever believes in me will never thirst.’
Our Savior invites you to this table, to be fed the bread of heaven and
drink from the cup of salvation.
The Prayer of Thanksgiving (responsively)
Leader: The Lord be with you.
People: And also with you.
Leader: Lift up your hearts.
People: We lift them up to the Lord.
Leader: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
People: It is right to give God thanks and praise.
It is truly right, and our greatest joy to give you thanks and praise, O God,
our creator and redeemer. In your wisdom, you made all things and sustain
them by your power. You formed us in your image to love and serve you,
but we forgot your promises and abandoned your commandments. In your
mercy, you did not reject us but still claimed us as your own.
When we were slaves in Egypt, you freed us and led us through the waters
of the sea. You fed us with heavenly food in the wilderness, and satisfied
our thirst from desert springs. On the holy mountain you gave us your law
to guide us in your way. Through the waters of Jordan you led us into the
land of your promise, and sustained us in times of trial.
You spoke through prophets calling us to turn from our willful ways to
new obedience and righteousness. When the time was right, you sent your
only Son to be the way to eternal life. He took upon himself the weight of
our sins and carried the burden of our guilt. He shared our life in every
way, and though tempted, was sinless to the end. Baptized as your own, he
went willingly to his death, and was raised by your power to new life. In
his dying and rising, you gave birth to your church, delivered us from
slavery to sin and death, and made a new covenant with us by water and
the Spirit.
Remembering all your mighty and merciful acts, we take this bread and
this wine from the gifts you have given us, and celebrate with joy the
redemption won for us in Jesus Christ. Accept our sacrifice of praise and
thanksgiving as a living and holy offering of ourselves that our lives may
proclaim the One crucified and risen.
The Words of Remembrance and Anticipation
The Lord’s Prayer (“debts”)
Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom
come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our
daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and
lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the
kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen.
The Sharing of the Bread and the Cup
Concluding Prayer
BEARING THE WORD OUT INTO THE WORLD
**Hymn Fill My Cup, Let It Overflow #699
**The Charge and the Benediction
**Choral Benediction Send Us Now Away John Ness Beck
Send us now away from Thy house, O Lord, refreshed, renewed with Thy
blessings of this day. Keep the word of truth in our hearts restored; may
we not forget Thee on our homeward way. Amen.
Postlude We All Believe in One God J. S. Bach
