HUNTERS/GATHERERS ON TONLE SAP.

The great Tonle Sap Lake is the richest fresh water fishing ground in the world, a national treasure producing an ever-changing landscape. The communities that live around the margins of the lake cope with huge seasonal variations in water levels by building their homes on floating bamboo rafts or 30ft stilts. It is well worth the extra effort to get away from the touristy village of Chong Kneas to the more genuine stilted villages – Kampong Khleang or Kampong Phluk (dependent on water levels) – for an understanding of contemporary lake life.

Take the opportunity to pause at the stilted houses to learn how a subsistence fishing family lives, before continuing by boat along the margins of the lake.

YOUR MENTORS.

MIKE BROWNE I’ve been a social, industrial and commercial photographer since 1993, have always had a love of travel and new cultures - and passion for sharing my knowledge with others. Which, according to the 1000’s of lovely emails and comments I receive - I’m very good at. I have worked for all kinds of clients from high end weddings to hotels and electronics manufacturers. I have awards from Kodak and Fuji, been sponsored by FujiFilm, had exhibitions displayed by the Romanian Ambassador in London, The Master Photographer’s Association and the Royal Photographic society. Travel photography is my no 1 passion because it involves all photographic disciplines, landscape, portraits, candid, food, close ups – all of it.

17,500 hours of video is watched on my youtube channel each month, I have a teaching qualification and a sense of mischief ;-)

SIMON TAPLINWith his breadth and depth of international experiences across an extensive repertoire of photography genres, Simon Taplin is probably one of the most versatile photographers who confidently embraces a holistic conceptualisation approach in visual presentation. Patient and sensitive to his students’ needs, he has a knack for transforming the most technical jargon into easy-to-understand analogies that help ensure their learning is memorable and fun at the same time. With a strong classical training with a BA Hounors Degree in photography from Salisbury College of Art & Design, Simon’s career began in London, where he worked with some of the finest photographers from whom he gained holistic knowledge and skills across extensive areas of photography. Moving to Asia in 2002, Simon then worked for Shooting Gallery Asia, one of Southeast Asia’s premier photography studios where his unique marriage of technical and creative skills were sought by the world’s leading advertising agencies including JWT, Saatchi & Saatchi, Leo Burnett, BBDO and Corbis. His clients’ list also includes Unilever, P&G, Nokia, Cathay Pacific, Qatar Airways, Singapore Airlines, MasterCard and Heineken. Simon has certainly created a lasting impression with industry awards and lists from D&AD, The One Show, Communication Arts and publications in Luerzer’s Archive, and the best in stock imagery photography awards Photo District News 2011, working with Corbis images and as a global assignment photograher for Getty images.

ADVENTURE PHOTOGRAPHY TOURCAMBODIA+VIETNAM FAQ’s

WHAT LEVEL OF SKILL AS A PHOTOGRAPHER DO I NEED?

A: Photographers of all skill levels will benefit from one of our trips. If you are an absolute beginner then we’ll start with the basic and build up your skills with guidance and tutoring in the field as we go.

If you are an advanced amateur or even professional, you’ll benefit from the richness & culture of the destinations we travel to. There will be ample opportunities to share and review feedback from your professional mentors and peers on the trip.

WHAT SORT OF TUITION IS PROVIDED?A: You will be travelling with professional photographers at all times whose sole job is to help you improve your photography. Tuition and workshops generally occur in the field or place of accommodation and will vary depending on the skills of the photographers. Needless to say we eat sleep and breathe photography on these trips.

We also hold regular review/critique sessions of each person’s work and we find these feedback and peer review sessions to be invaluable.

Through peers interaction and mentors ongoing guidance, we are confident you will develop a new perspective that help you “see” new images as we wander the streets and push you to step outside your comfort zone.

I DON’T HAVE A FANCY DSLR. DOES THAT MATTER?A: Photography is often more about the person behind the camera than the camera itself. There’s no doubt a DSLR will help you in certain situations and will give you flexibility in others, however it’s not absolutely necessary. We would however recommend a camera that has at least a manual capability.

On the tour, your expert mentors will guide and help you better understand your tool (camera), enhance your techni-cal skills and creativity to maximize your potential in photography.

WHAT’S THE STANDARD OF ACCOMMODATION LIKE?A: Accommodation varies depending on the trip but in general we stay at the best hotels that value has to offer for the trip. All hotels are good, safe and clean on all our trips.

WHAT ARE THE STANDARDS OF OUR TRANSPORTATION?A: All of our drivers go through a certified tourist operators driving certification and are to the highest standard to ensure your best safety. All our vehicles are tidily kept by the drivers.

ARE MEALS INCLUDED?A: Breakfasts are included in this tour, lunch and dinner, drinks/alcoholic beverages are at own cost.

A P E R T U R E A S I A . F A Q

Page 8: THE TEMPLES OF ANGKOR & THE MIGHTY MEKONG… · Angkor Wat and hopefully to capture beautiful sunset. Adventure ends. Return to Hotel. FREE & EASY. 29TH SEPTEMBER, SUNDAY (DAY 5)

IS THERE ANY FREE TIME INCLUDED?A: Yes, some free time is included on most trips. Of course we politely hint that you might still want to take your camera with you when you head out.

HOW FIT DO I NEED TO BE?A: Whilst it depends on the trip, you generally only need a good level of fitness. Mostly all locations are via mini bus and a short walk to each location.

DO I NEED INSURANCE?A: Yes. All guests must have personal and travel insurance.

DO I NEED PAY FOR ENTRANCE FEES OR LOCAL TRANSPORTATION?A: The tour package price is inclusive of all entrance fees and local tour transportations. However, it does not include tips for the tour guide and bus driver, please allow $5 per day. You are not obligated to tip. Tips are reward given to them for providing you with good service. The amount of the tip is entirely at your discretion.

WHAT SORT OF EQUIPMENT WILL I NEED TO TAKE?A: Equipment list will be provided for all trips when booking.

CAN I GET A VISA ON ARRIVAL?A: A valid visa is required for almost foreigners to enter and can be obtained both online and on arrival in Cambodia.

For Vietnam, for those whose nationalities that are included in the Vietnam visa exemption list approved by Vietnam Govern-ment. Please check to see if your passport is eligible for the Vietnamese Visa waiver program, or if you need to apply in advance.

WHAT CURRENCY IS COMMONLY ACCEPTED & HOW MUCH MONEY SHOULD I EX-CHANGE?A: Cambodia $USD is preferred and widely accepted, Vietnamese Dong is only accepted in vietnam. Major credit cards at restaurants / bars are accepted. Estimate $300 dollars for your trip.

HOW WILL I BE MAKING A POSITIVE DIFFERENCE?A: Ironically images of the world’s poorest people are often the most fascinating. Many of them live on as little as US$0.50 cents per day. We believe in giving back to these people and have teamed up with Mekong Plus who’ve helped people out of poverty since 1994. A micro loan of just US$30 enables a family to buy pigs and start a pig farm. The loan is repaid, their business grows and they spend money in the village, thus helping others. Villagers are trained in making beautiful and practi-cal handicrafts and paid around US$120 per month. These are sold in shops in Saigon and Siem Reap to raise funds for more projects including sponsoring children through school. We donate 10% to Mekong Plus so you’ll make a difference as you get amazing images. We love a win-win for everyone. If you’d like to buy gifts for friends and family, we respectfully suggest you get from the Mekong Plus shop in Saigon which we will visit on departure day.
