    THE TEMPLE CHURCH: FROM THE 12th TO THE

    21st CENTURY

    The Church’s interior, as we can all see this evening, is as beautiful as ever. Its

    ancillary spaces, however, are in decay. We are now preparing to refurbish and re-

    beautify the whole ‘envelope’ surrounding the historic interior, and so to equip

    the Church for its steadily increasing use – liturgical, musical, cultural and

    educational – over the next hundred years, for the benefit of the Inns, our

    members and the many thousands of visitors who enjoy the Church and its

    events every year.

  • 11

    Here is the plan:

    To recover the 12th century splendour of the Round’s Great Norman Doorway;

    to glaze in its porch to provide a steady temperature;

    To create steps and a ramp from Inner Temple Lane down to the Doorway’s level; and so to make the Doorway the spectacular entrance

    to the Church, all year round, that it once was and should be.

    To reconfigure and refurbish the whole long ‘corridor’ of subterranean rooms – currently the choir-school and (woefully inadequate) loos –

    that abut the Church’s north wall; and to create there a modern suite of

    facilities that need to be next to the Church.

    To convert the three tall and airy gables of the roof-space into the choir-school and Church-offices, bringing them all literally under one

    roof.

  • 12

    The current draft plan for the conversion of the Church’s roof spaces.

    This is a large and expensive project, likely to take five or more years to

    complete. The present preparatory stages are being run by ourselves, within the

    Church. We are already in touch with a few prestigious trusts and foundations

    that have expressed an interest in supporting us. We will be glad to hear from

    any members of the Inns who can advise us on further and less familiar avenues

    to pursue.

    We look forward to enthusing those around us, in the Temple and beyond, with

    the opportunities that this work will open for the far fuller and more effective

    use, for the Inns’ and their members’ benefit, of this majestic and numinous

    building.
