Things I Need To Say As Your Student’s Counselor
This will NOT be my firstIMPACT
graduating class
My goal for your student is your goal! I will do whatever I can to help you and your student accomplish that goal within the guidelines that must be adhered to!
THINGS I KNOW TO BE TRUE…
Junior year is the most challenging year in high school Every IMPACT student is different and on their own path Burnout and Stress are REAL Kids face many distractions that they have to learn how
to deal with.
Why is Junior Year such a challenge?
There are many firsts that your student will be facing this year. 3 college classes Academic college classes Responsibility and Freedom More college classes than high school
Distractions
Driving Social Life (bf/gf) Jobs “Jobs kill GPAs” Extra Curricular Activities Too many responsibilities at home Too many vacations in the summer
This will be hard to hear…
Some of your students will not complete their
Associate Degree before graduating from high school.
Potential Reasons Why…?
Not enough semesters left Grades (high school or college, they need to find the
balance) You were placed on Academic Probation or Suspension If you make a D or an F in the first part of a dual credit
college class, you cannot go on to the second part of the class. You will be placed in a high school class to meet graduation requirements
TSIA Readiness – AKA College Readiness
Academic Progress of the Class of 2021
As of Fall Semester 2019 (101 students) 63 IMPACT Students are in Good Academic
Standing 12 IMPACT Students are on Academic Warning 18 IMPACT Students are on Academic Probation 8 IMPACT Students are on Academic Suspension
Celebrate
There are different levels of “complete” and we need to celebrate all hours that your student completes with a C or better! Associate Degree – 60 college hours with a grade of C
or better in all classes Core Complete – 42 college hours with a grade of C or
better in all classes Any classes that are completed with a grade of C or
better
Communication
Junior year is when email becomes invaluable It is a soft skill that students need to learn for the future
(instructors, advisors, work, etc.) I would rather they test their skills out on me first rather
than write something that may be misinterpreted by someone else
Why is GPA and RANK IMPORTANT
GPA – Universities will look at high school transcript only!
RANK vs. Graduating Class Size Entrance tests – SAT or ACT Essays Activities Service Hours/Alumni
Affiliations, etc.
Test Scores Matter: University of Houston Fall 2020 freshman admission requirements
ACT TESTING
ACT Exam is scheduled for March 24, 2020, No Fee ACT Exam cost is $68.00 (if your student needs to take is again)
Free stuff is almost ending but testing waivers will be available! Criteria for a testing waiver is to be on Free/Reduced Lunch.
Any testing outside of School Day testing is on your own. Make sure to schedule 1 month in advance to avoid late registration fees!
ACT PREPARATION
ACT Prep is important! Form Study Groups! Make sure your group has 4 people max. Last Year’s scores increased significantly by adding ACT Prep tutorial
and ACT Study Groups Grad Café is a great resource. They are located at Lee College
near library.
AVID 3 Take advantage of class time and put in work! Do the research & make sure you have your top 3
universities! Be realistic about budget & entrance requirements Early College H. S. students MUST apply as Freshmen
to the university (you cannot transfer into a university)
Study and Practice! APPLY FOR SCHOLARSHIPS!!! Utilize your resources and the people around you
Plan Ahead
Next Year you will need money for University applications ($25 to $75 or more)
Sending ACT/SAT scores
Lee College Transcripts
Housing deposits, etc.
APPLY FOR SCHOLARSHIPS!!! (Online, IMPACT website, Scholarships 360/Twitter)
Planning and timing are everything!
• When a student doesn’t maintain a 2.0 GPA within a given semester, but
has a 2.0 or above cumulative GPA
• A hold will be placed on their record preventing registration
• The student will be required to complete a mandatory online resource
workshop for the hold to be released
What Is Academic Warning?
• When a student doesn’t maintain a 2.0 cumulative GPA or higher
• A hold will be placed on their record to prevent registration
• This hold will be released once a cumulative GPA of 2.0 is achieved
• The student will be required to visit with assigned advisor/counselor to
discuss an action plan and to register for the upcoming semester
• The student will be limited to 1-2 courses that semester and a grade
replacement course selection may be required
What Is Academic Probation?
What Is Academic Suspension?• When a student doesn’t maintain a semester GPA of 2.0 or higher
while on Academic Probation
• They must sit out for one long semester, this can include summer
• A hold will remain on the student’s records until a cumulative GPA of
a 2.0 is achieved
• The student will be required to visit with their assigned
advisor/counselor to discuss an action plan and register for the
upcoming semester
• The student will be limited to 1-2 courses that semester and grade
replacement course selections may be required
• Your GPA goes with you
• Can cause difficulties when transferring
• Can limit the number of classes you can take
• Can require you to sit out a semester
• Can cause difficulties for getting into certain programs
• Associate degree may not be completed by the time you graduate high school
How Does This Impact Your Future?
• Retake classes you previously failed
• Bring your GPA up
• Have realistic ideas for your course load/homework
• Meet with professors, counselors, and advisors regularly
• Do well in your future classes
• Don’t get discouraged
Ways To Get Off Probation/Suspension
• Students can still earn college credits
• GPAs can be brought up and students can get off of suspension/probation
• Some students may be able to catch up and complete their degrees by high
school graduation
• Students get to take these credits with them when they transfer
• They can still complete their degree after graduating high school
This Isn’t An All Or Nothing
• Get plenty of sleep
• Manage your time wisely
• Ask questions/Ask for Help
• Arrive to class prepared (i.e., pens, pencils, textbooks, course supplies)
• Be punctual, engaged and alert
• Follow your course syllabi and grading rubrics
• Complete readings and assignments prior to class
• Refrain from the use of personal electronics (unless otherwise instructed by your
professor)
• Seek out study groups, attend tutorials and research online resources
• Adopt a college ready mindset – dedication, discipline and maturity
