CHAMPIONSHIP MATCH Since its inception in 1984, the G1 Irish Champion S. has staged some intriguing match-ups. Epsom Derby hero Dr Devious (Ire) defeated his arch rival, Irish Derby winner St. Jovite, in 1992, while the 1999 edition witnessed a brilliant display by Daylami (Ire) as he once again handled the talented Royal Anthem. In today’s renewal of the epic race at Leopardstown, it will be the rematch of Susan Magnier and Michael Tabor’s Galileo (Ire) (Sadler’s Wells) and Godolphin colorbearer Fantas- tic Light (Rahy). The only other time the two clashed, Galileo triumphed by two lengths in the G1 King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Diamond S. at Ascot July 28, adding that win to his victories in the G1 Epsom Derby and G1 Irish Derby. It had been fairly easy going for the remarkable athlete until Ascot, and the connections of Fantastic Light will take much from the fact that their horse has been at his best at the 10 furlongs of the Champion S., taking the G1 Tattersalls Gold Cup May 27 and the G1 Prince of Wales’ S. at Royal Ascot. “[Fantastic Light] looks in great form and I feel that Saturday's race gives him a better chance of beating Galileo,” trainer Saeed bin Suroor said. “He is a very good horse over a mile and a half, but most of his big wins have been over a mile and a quarter--that is the perfect trip for our horse.” However, the view from Ballydoyle seems to be that Galileo will be better at the shorter distance as well. Trainer Aidan O’Brien may drop the colt all the way back to a mile for the G1 Queen Elizabeth II S. Sept. 29, so today’s trip should prove no problem. After the Irish Derby, O’Brien said, “He has so much class he can’t be a natural mile and a half horse. Certainly a mile or a mile and a quarter is his real trip.” Saturday, Leopardstown, Ireland, post time: 4:05 p.m. IRELAND THE FOOD ISLAND IRISH CHAMPION S.-G1, Ir £825,000, 3yo/up, 1 1/4mT SC PP HORSE SIRE TRAINER WT 1 7 Bach (Ire) Caerleon A O Brien 130 26 Chimes At Midnight Danzig Comer 130 3 2 Fantastic Light Rahy bin Suroor 130 43 Give The Slip (GB) Slip Anchor (GB) bin Suroor 130 5 4 Galileo (Ire) Sadler's Wells A O Brien 123 6 1 Ice Dancer (Ire) Sadler's Wells A O Brien 123 7 8 Rebelline (Ire) Robellino Prendergast 120 8 5 Siringas (Ire) Barathea (Ire) Bolger 120 TIZ THE SEASON A year ago, Tiznow (Cee’s Tizzy) had just one stakes win to his credit, a neck victory in the GIII Affirmed H. at Hollywood in July. He will earn a lot of votes with a win in today’s GI Woodward S. at Belmont Park. He captured the June 10 GII Brooklyn H. and July 1 GII Suburban H. before running second to four-time Chilean Group 1 winner Lido Palace in the July 28 GI Whitney S. at Saratoga. KEENELAND TO LOWER TAKEOUT; ADJUSTPOST TIMES The takeout on exotic wagers--such asdaily doubles, exactas, trifectas, superfectas and PickThrees--at the Keeneland meeting which opens Oct. 5will drop from 19 percent to 16 percent, the trackannounced yesterday. The takeout on straight wagerswill remain at 16 percent. Keeneland follows the lead ofthe New York Racing Association, which lowered itstakeout starting with the Saratoga meet and saw on-track handle grow as a result. “Keeneland’s experimentwith the reduced takeout is the next step in an industryeffort to make the racing product more attractive to thewagering public,” Keeneland President Nick Nicholsonsaid. The track is also looking for permission to changeit’s Pick Six wager to a Pick Five, a move which willhave to be approved by the Kentucky Racing Commis-sion. In addition, Keeneland will coordinate its posttimes with Belmont Park during the fall meet, so thetwo tracks do not run head-to-head. “On most days, the races will be spaced about 15 minutes apart, en-abling simulcast patrons a greater opportunity to watchthe post parade and wager on their selections,” Nichol-son said. Post time for the first race at Keeneland willbe 1:15 p.m. with the exception of closing day, Oct.27, when the first race will go off at 11:15 a.m.

The eight-year-old, whowill be re-syndicated by Darby Dan, has five winnersfrom his first crop for progeny earnings of $202,245,good for seventh on the freshman sire list. A graded-stakes winner on turf and dirt, Matty G won the GIHollywood Futurity and earned $443,275. “Matty G’sprecocity as a race horse coupled with a family of con-sistent class and speed alerted us early on that he hadserious potential as a stallion,” John Phillips, managingpartner of Darby Dan, said. “For years at Darby Dan wehave been in need of a sire that produces quick-devel-oping speed without it being just ‘cheap’ speed. Givenhis limited opportunity, what Matty G has accomplishedis amazing. He is an ideal mate for mares with NorthernDancer and Raise a Native blood.”

Three Points will bid for a deserved first Group 1success here after finding the very smart King Charle-magne only a neck too good when runner-up in the G1Prix Maurice de Gheest at Deauville Aug. 12. Previ-ously, he finished a fine fourth to Mozart (Ire) in the G1July Cup at Newmarket July 12 and a length second toHarmonic Way in the G2 Cork and Orrery S. at RoyalAscot June 21. The colt has the credentials and will bebidding to provide Pat Eddery with his first success inthis race since Danehill in 1989. Harmonic Way is backfor a rematch, but the ground, which has turned toheavy throughout the week, has gone against him.Aidan O’Brien saddles both Minardi and Mull Of Kintyreafter deciding to keep King Charlemagne at home.Minardi was a fine third in the G1 Irish 2000 Guineas atThe Curragh May 26, but was a disappointing sixthbehind King Charlemagne at Deauville last time on hisfirst try at sprinting. The ground has gone against him as well, and it will not favour Mull of Kintyre, but itcould certainly benefit last year’s winner Pipalong. Thefilly has been unable to recapture that form this year, but she was badly drawn when 13th in the July Cupand never got on terms when seventh behind Mozart inthe G1 Nunthorpe S. at York Aug. 23.
