SUNY MARITIME COLLEGE CAPITAL IMPROVEMENTS
The 2010-2011 fi scal year witnessed the completion of numerous capital projects. The State University Construction Fund (SUCF) provided $5.4 million to fund the facilities master plan, install a secondary electric system in Fort Schuyler, complete phase one of the steam distribution replacement project, rehabilitate elevators throughout the campus, and relocate the Admissions Building from its former East River location to the campus entry where it was renovated and expanded. The building now hosts a new campus Welcome Center as well as the Admissions Offi ce. Construction began on a wide-range of multi-year projects totaling over $71.5 million and include the new academic building, laboratory upgrades in the Science & Engineering building and renovations to Riesenberg Gymnasium and Vander Clute Hall’s dining facilities. Construction continued at the pier and waterfront, and the new phases of the following projects were implemented: steam distribution replacement, landscape enhancement, lighting and stone-paver sidewalks. Additionally, the campus security system and various HVAC systems throughout the campus were upgraded. Funding was provided by The State University Construction Fund. The SUNY Maritime College facilities department is to be commended for its outstanding management and successful execution of the facilities master plan. The dynamic impact of their collective efforts is abundantly evident in every area of the campus. Going forward, the College will expend $5.7 million to complete additional aspects of the facilities master plan - several already in the design phase - which include a new facilities warehouse, roof replacements, phase one of an emergency generation system, and construction of a new Seamanship Center at the pier.

FULBRIGHT FELLOW CONSTANTIA CONSTANTINOU
Constantia Constantinou, SUNY Maritime College’s Department Chair and Director of the Stephen B. Luce Library, was named a Fulbright Scholar and spent six months on sabbatical in Cyprus. Ms. Constantinou’s work advanced the Cypriot universities’ global access to information by facilitating the creation of the Cyprus National Library Consortium and by promoting access to the Online Computer Library Center, Inc. (OCLC). Through a politically and ethnically sensitive process, Ms. Constantinou developed programs for the Greek and Turkish Cypriot library communities to explore areas of mutual collaboration and
understanding. In addition, she worked with the U.S. Department of State to have two librarians – each from a Turkish or Greek Cypriot University - travel to the United States to explore library practices at SUNY, Cornell and Columbia Universities. The Fulbright Scholar Program is sponsored by the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs and is the U.S. government’s flagship international exchange program.

SUNY MARITIME COLLEGE SUMMER SEA TERM To better accommodate the increased number of students in the Regiment of Cadets, and to more effectively facilitate summer training opportunities, the College, for the second year in a row, conducted two 45-day Summer Sea Term sessions aboard Empire State and expanded its Cadet Observer program for deck and engine cadets to train aboard industry vessels. Second and third class cadets took part in one of the two 45-day sessions, and first class cadets were onboard for the full 90 days. Session I began May 9, 2011, when Empire State VI departed from Olivet Pier with 503 cadets aboard. Session I port visits included Aalborg, Denmark, Riga, Latvia, Gdynia, Poland and Cobh, Ireland. The College chartered World Airways and arranged an exchange of Session I and II students and staff in Ireland. In addition to Cobh, Ireland, port visits for the 502 Summer Sea Term II Cadets included Split, Croatia and Palma de Mallorca. Cadets learned ship handling, maneuvering, and boat training in the waters off Riga, Latvia and Palma de Mallorca. As one of the 64 campuses of the State University of New York (SUNY), Maritime College shares in the benefi ts and resources provided by a large system. Capital improvements are administered through the State University Construction Fund. Grants are facilitated through the Research Foundation of SUNY and philanthropic donations are administered by the University at Buffalo Foundation. SUNY Maritime also operates the Faculty Student Association, a separate 501(c)(3) not-for-profi t corporation that contracts with Maritime’s bookstore and food service provider, among others.
Financial ConditionThe following is a four-year analysis of Maritime’s revenue, receivables, residence hall operations and income fund reimbursables. The analysis of this data is key to understanding the fundamental fi nancial components of the College.
Maritime College BudgetIn 2010-2011, SUNY Maritime College sustained a $1.6 million budget cut as part of an overall $439 million budget cut to the State University. While tuition revenue increased for 2010-2011 ($9,283,200) due to increased student enrollment, overall operational expenses exceeded income. To offset the shortfall, the College used $2 million in reserve funds.

GIVING TO SUNY MARITIME COLLEGEThe Sallyport Fund The Sallyport Fund is the Annual Giving program for SUNY Maritime College. Annual giving is the back-bone of all collegiate fundraising and provides the additional revenue necessary to develop academic programs, expand extra-curricular offerings and enhance student and regimental life on campus. These gifts have an immediate and direct impact on our students and faculty, as well as our athletic and extracurricular programs. Monies raised are used for tuition assistance, technology, faculty programs, capital needs and educational enhancements.
The Admiral’s Scholarship DinnerThe Admiral’s Scholarship Dinner is held annually in May. Each year, a select number of distin-guished SUNY Maritime College alumni and friends are honored for their contributions to the College and the industries they serve. The Admiral’s Dinner provides a tremendous opportu-nity to reconnect with classmates, network with industry leaders, and raise scholarship funds.
Memorial Gifts Gifts may be made to honor or memorialize a loved one, for a special intention, or a general need.
Estate and planned gifts Estate and Planned Gifts are an exceptional way to establish a lasting legacy and make a substantial contribution to SUNY Maritime College. Many alumni and friends have supported the College through planned gifts which include bequests, gifts in trust, charitable remainder trusts and charitable gift annuities.
Endowment GiftsNamed endowments may be established with gifts of $25,000 and above. An endowed gift is a wonderful way to honor a loved one. The principal of these funds is used to generate income for tuition, department chairs and other program assistance.
