Kaikado was established in 1875, shortly after Japan opened its doors to the outside world. With Western Civilization came the importing of tinplate from England. Chazutsu is a cylinder-shaped airtight container. For generations, it has been used to protect foodstuffs, such as green tea leaves, from moisture and humidity. Possessing both function and beauty, chazutsu is practical as well as an objet d'art. We meticulously handcraft each piece in Kaikado’s sixth-generation Kyoto studio. Gentle handling of the chazutsu day after day brings out a mysteriously elegant sheen, providing utility and pleasure as it ages gracefully and its beauty increases over time with ownership. Chazutsu’s unique airtight feature may be applied in a variety of ways, such as protecting coffee beans, exotic spices and pasta from moisture and humidity.

Since ancient times, Japanese people have used bamboo to make various utensils such as baskets and chopsticks. In 1879, Kyoto bamboo gained a place in history when it was used by Thomas Edison as the filament for his first electric light bulb. Twenty years later in 1898, Kohchosai Kosuga was founded with the goal of using of Kyoto's famous natural bamboo to “enrich the everyday lives of people.” Since then, we have continued to meticulously craft bamboo goods from functional products to decorative arts, always pursuing the ideal of “beauty to the highest degree.” These high quality, elegant bamboo pieces which combine the spirit of the traditional with the modern will no doubt enrich our contemporary lifestyles.

The Dimension Transforming System (DTS) is a 3D manufacturing system developed by Aki Co., Ltd. This technique allows material to be divided and cut along three axes (x, y, z) and reassembled. The process is managed by computers from design to manufacturing. All parts are cut by laser, which makes microscopic work with various materials possible. We are currently producing a variety of 3D objects such as mannequins, miniature animal models, lighting equipment, original packaging and several types of interior furniture.

For many years, our company has been coloring copperware!including bronze sculptures, Buddha statues, and assorted handicrafts!through traditional techniques, some originally imported from Mesopotamia and China, using natural substances such as plants, rice bran, sake, vinegar and beeswax. With a thorough grounding in these traditional methods, we have established our own original chemical and heat-treatment techniques for creative coloring of copper and brass. Metal plates in a variety of colors make excellent wall material for interior design. We can adjust colors brighter or darker, and add patterned designs.

NEED'K emphasizes the search for originality to bring out the charm and possibilities a fabric has to offer. As a leader in advanced textile manufacturing, we believe that the beauty and uniqueness of textiles are more important than production convenience. Rather than simply producing at one location using a single material, we carefully mange a combination of production locations using different materials to create refined textures of varied color and design. We use a handicraft approach at all levels of the production process, from the making of threads to dyeing, weaving and finishing.
