EXHIBITION OPENING NIGHT

Natalie Hewitt - Year 10Congratulations to year 10 student Natalie who as presented with the Queen's Guide Award at the State Girl Guide Award Ceremony at the Perth Town Hall on Saturday 24 August. This is the peak achievement award for Guides and also means that Natalie will be awarded 4 points towards her WACE under the endorsed programmes section. The Queen's Guide has 3 compulsory components:
• A 3 month Interest for which Natalie undertook Roller Blading.• The Gold Endeavour, consisting of 7 tasks including giving 30 hours community service, earning the Bronze Medallion,
researching and presenting part of Girl Guide History, running activities about Guiding in another country and attending a residential Leadership course.
• One of 9 possible Focus areas each involving 2 activities, a workshop and a 6 month project - Natalie chose the Social Awareness Focus and compared the health benefits of a number of different exercise regimes over many months as well as looking at nutrition and attending a residential Body Image workshop and a Stress Less workshop.
Natalie was not content to earn just one Focus and has also worked on the other 8 Focus areas! She has completed 5 more which will also be presented at the Award Ceremony, has nearly completed another two and has commenced the last Focus. The other Focuses are:
1. Arts, for which Natalie participated in School Drama productions and Sinfonia, attended a 4 day WAYACHAMP Strings workshop at UWA and undertook a 10 month project to extend her violin playing, including passing AMEB Violin Grade 4 and AMEB Theory Grades 1 and 2.
2. Outdoor Adventure, for which Natalie earned the Bronze Duke of Edinburgh Award, earned the Guide Canoeing badge, attended a full-day Bibbulmun Track compass skills workshop and undertook a 6 month Family bushwalking project.
3. Science and Technology, for which Natalie participated in the Year 9 STEM Challenge, attended an 8 week Scitech Kinetic Ball Machines course, attended a Scitech workshop on Gravity and undertook a 6 month project to try out Science Experiments and work out whether they would be appropriate to use when she becomes a Kindergarten teacher.
4. Service, for which Natalie earned the Bronze Medallion and Guide Safety badge, attended a 2-part Personal Safety/Women's Self Defence course and gave another 60 hours service to the Community (helping at our Junior Church and also during the School Indonesian Trip).
5. Special, for which Natalie earned the Guide Sport badge for her Netball and umpiring commitments, grew summer vegetables, attended a Gardening workshop and undertook a 10 month project to makeover our family vegetable garden by installing raised garden beds.
6. Leadership, for which Natalie undertook a Personal Development Challenge, earned the Red Cross "Provide First Aid" qualification, helped as a Junior Leader with younger Guides for a year, attended a residential Leadership course and earned the Guide Leadership badge.
7. World Guiding, for which Natalie earned the Guide World Guiding badge including researching social issues in Papua New Guinea, has almost earned the International Guide Commonwealth Award, attended workshops during the School Indonesian Trip and has almost completed a 6+ month project to make 26 dolls and dress them in the uniforms of the 26 Guide member countries from the Asia Pacific Region.
8. Environment, for which Natalie attended a residential Mock United Nations Conference and played the role of Soroptimists International, is working on the Guide Advocacy and Outdoor Conservation badges, is booked in to participate in a 1 day revegetation project and has just commenced a 6 month project to investigate how our household could become carbon neutral.
