e meet again in the Target Magazine. At FITA, we are happy to inform you regularly about the new developments that are taking place with-

in World Archery. As you know, there have been many changes in archery as a result of the 2009 Congress in Ulsan. We have tried some of these new developments during the last major events. Most recently, we have tested new changes to our competition format during the first and second World Cup stages in Porec and Antalya. In Antalya, we were fortunate to have several IOC Members in attendance such as the IOC Vice President Thomas BACH (GER), Mr Sergey BUBKA (UKR), Mr WU Ching-Kuo (TPE) and Mr CHANG Ung (PRK). We were delighted to receive many positive comments from our IOC friends about the new formats and you will be able to read some within this publication.

More importantly, however, is the feedback we are receiving from our archers, coaches and Member Associations to add to the observations of our own. Please, it is very important that partici-pants in our events complete the online survey on the FITA website. Your ideas are always very valuable to us and aid the successful development of our future.

As reported in this magazine, we are also delighted that His Royal High-ness Crown Prince Frederik of Denmark, IOC Member, who came to our World Cup Final in Copenhagen last year, spent an archery day with one of our Development Fund Partners.

The Archery World Cup is progressing with more and more success. As you know our Final this year will be in Edinburgh and next year in Istanbul. I am also very pleased to announce that more than 20 cities and organisations spreading over five continents are interested in hosting our World Cup Finals in 2012 and 2013. The bid and application process for these events continue and a decision will be made at the FITA Council next November.

Another highlight, so far, for Archery in 2010, is the Youth Olympic Games in Singapore. We believe that this event will be another major development activity for our young athletes. We are delighted that more than 40 countries qualified among the 64 places available. The number of countries participating is very important for the perception and promotion of archery as a universal sport.

Nous voici à nouveau réunis pour une nouvelle édition de notre magazine La Cible. A la FITA, nous sommes heureux de vous informer régulièrement sur les nouveaux développements qui ont lieu au sein du Tir à l’Arc Mondial. Comme vous le savez, il y a eu de nombreux changements dans le tir à l’arc suite au Congrès 2009 à Ulsan, en Corée. Nous avons essayé certains de ces développements à l’occasion des derniers événements majeurs. Tout récemment, nous avons testé de nouveaux changements dans nos formats de compétitions durant les première et deuxième étapes de la Coupe du Monde à Porec et Antalya. A Antalya, nous avons eu la chance d’accueillir plusieurs Membres du CIO tels que son Vice-président Monsieur Thomas BACH (GER), ainsi que Messieurs Sergey BUBKA (UKR), WU Ching-Kuo (TPE) et CHANG Ung (PRK). Nous avons été ravis de recevoir de nombreux commentaires positifs de nos amis du CIO sur les nouveaux formats et vous pourrez lire certains de ces commentaires dans ce numéro.

Plus importantes encore furent les réactions reçues de la part de nos archers, entraîneurs et Associations Membres, réactions dont nous tenons toujours compte, en plus de nos propres observations. S’il vous plaît, il est très important que les personnes qui participent à nos événements rem-plissent les sondages en ligne sur notre site web. Vos idées sont toujours très précieuses, nous aident à nous développer et suivre le chemin du succès pour le futur.

Egalement rapporté dans ce magasine, nous sommes aussi heureux que Son Altesse Royale (SAR) le Prince héritier Frederik du Danemark, Membre du CIO, qui était venu à la Finale de Coupe du Monde l’année passée à Copenhague, a passé une journée de tir à l’arc avec l’un de nos Partenaires du Fonds de Développement.

La Coupe du Monde de Tir à l’Arc progresse et rencontre de plus en plus de succès. Comme vous le savez, notre Finale se tiendra cette an-née à Edimbourg et l’année prochaine à Istanbul. Je suis également très heureux d’annoncer que plus de 20 villes et organisations sur les cinq continents ont montré de l’intérêt pour accueillir nos Finales en 2012 et 2013. La procédure de candidature pour ces événements va continuer et une décision sera prise au Conseil de la FITA en novembre prochain.

Un autre point culminant pour le tir à l’arc en 2010 sera les Jeux Olympiques de la Jeunesse à Singapour. Nous sommes certains que cet événement sera une autre activité de développement majeure pour nos jeunes athlètes. Nous sommes très heureux de la représentation à ces Jeux avec 40 pays qualifiés sur les 64 places disponibles. Le nombre de nations participantes est très important pour la perception et la promotion du tir à l’arc en tant que sport universel.

is Royal Highness (HRH) Crown Prince Frederik of Denmark is an archer. As any

archer knows, equipment has to be updated from time to time, especially given the rapid development of bows, arrows, etc. over the last 2-5 years. DANAGE of Scandinavia was asked to supply the best possible equipment to the Crown Prince—and received an invitation to the Royal Residence at Fredensborg.

A visit to the Fredensborg Palace and a meeting with HRH Crown Prince Frederik of Denmark—and IOC Member—is what we had to prepare for. By

“we”, I mean my two sons Henning and Mikael, and myself. Henning and Mikael were in charge of all the equipment: a new HOYT compound bow and new EASTON arrows, bow sight and quiver, plus a lot of other equipment to ensure that the Crown Prince had the best possible material for his shoot-

ing. My task was fairly easy; I had received the invitation and therefore felt entitled to join the others on the trip from southern Jutland all the way to northern Zealand. OK, I also wanted the pleasure of meeting the Prince in person and to see how good he was at archery.

I first became acquainted with him at the Danish champion-ships in Koge in 2002, where he officiated in presenting the med-als to the winning archers. At that time, he had proved to be a good archer when he took a couple of shots himself, scoring well even though the bow was not his own and therefore the draw length was not right. But we were now going to get to know him better and needed to make sure that the equipment we took with us was exactly right for him. In the Royal presence, we would have to make sure the bow draw length was correct, the peep was adjusted just right, the bow was tuned and the sight pins in the right position. Everything had to be just perfect.

We enjoyed a pleasant trip up through Jutland, across the is-lands of Funen and Zealand along familiar roads, although the last few kilometres to Fredensborg were new to us, as this was our first visit there. However, and in common with most Danes, we are familiar with the castle as this was the site of the Queen’s recent 70th birthday celebrations which were followed closely on TV.

The atmosphere in the car changed as we drew nearer. Little was said, and we were a little nervous about how the encounter would go. The first stop was before the entrance to the castle—we wanted to get an idea of what we were getting into. Next stop was the gate, manned by the Royal Guard, who checked us in and then directed us to the Chancel House where the Crown Prince has his residence. We parked next to the Royal vehicles and were met by the Prince’s private secretary followed by the Prince himself.

We were shown into the garden where coffee, biscuits and mineral water were served and we were made to feel welcome. The equipment and tools we had brought with us, including a bow press, were unpacked and everything made ready. We were of course excited and nervous but need not have worried—every-

A cette époque, il avait prouvé qu’il était un bon archer en décochant quelques flèches. Il avait alors réussi de bons scores malgré le fait que l’arc n’était pas le sien. Mais nous allions maintenant faire plus ample connaissance et de-vions nous assurer que l’équipement que nous avions préparé était celui qu’il fallait pour le prince. En présence royale, nous allions devoir vérifier que la longueur d’allonge soit correcte, la visette bien ajustée, l’arc bien réglé et le point de visée en posi-tion correcte. Tout devrait être absolument parfait.

Le voyage à travers le Jutland a été des plus agréables, par les îles de Funen et Zealand sur des routes familières, bien que les derniers kilomètres jusqu’à Fredensborg aient été nouveaux pour nous, puisque c’était notre première visite là-bas. Néan-moins, ce qui est un point commun avec de nombreux Danois, le château nous est familier, puisque c’était le site des récentes célébrations organisées pour les 70 ans de la reine, célébra-tions que le peuple a suivies de près à la télévision.

Nous avons parqué notre voiture à côté des véhicules royaux et avons été reçus par le secrétaire privé du prince suivi du prince lui-même.

On nous a conduits dans le jardin où, en guise de bienve-nue, on nous a servi du café, des biscuits et de l’eau miné-rale. Nous avons ensuite déballé et préparé tout l’équipement et les outils que nous avions apportés. Bien sûr, nous étions très excités et nerveux, mais nous n’avions pas à nous en faire, puisque tout s’est très bien déroulé. L’équipement était parfaitement adéquat, le prince héritier a rapidement appris à s’en servir, et sans que nous nous en rendions compte, deux heures avaient passé en agréable compagnie. Deux heures

thing went smoothly. The equipment was perfect, the Crown Prince was quick to learn and before we knew it, two hours had flown by in pleasant company, during which time the Crown Prince demon-strated that he was a competent archer.

On the way home, we counted up how many arrows had actu-ally been loosed and reckoned that the Prince shot somewhere be-tween 80 and 100 with a bow set to 65 lbs—pretty impressive. It was obvious that the Prince is in excellent physical condition and is an active sportsman, as he has demonstrated by becoming a navy frogman (an élite unit in the Danish defence forces) and taking part in the gruelling Sirius dogsled patrol across the Greenland ice cap.

I would like to express my respect for the way he handled the equipment, and how quickly he was able to find the range. And as an indication of how good an archer he is, his first try-out shot hit the bull’s-eye.

All I can say is that if the equipment was worth a king’s ransom, the Crown Prince lived up to the price.

J’aimerais également exprimer au prince mon respect pour la manière dont il a manié l’équipement et sa rapidité à trouver le champ de tir. Et comme indication de ses qualités d’archer, son tout premier tir d’essai a atteint le centre de la cible.

Tout ce que je peux dire, c’est que si l’équipement valait la rançon du roi, le prince héritier en a été à la hauteur.

he first Youth Olympic Games (YOG) will be held in Singapore from 14-26 August 2010.

The objective is to bring together about 3500 young and talented athletes aged between 14 and 18 years old. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) wishes the Youth Olympic Games to be a return to the origin of the Olym-pic Games spirit. The Cultural and Sportive di-mension of the Games will be important as well as the image of Fair-Play.

With the goal to present an attractive competi-tion format that fits within the Youth Olympic Games programme, World Archery is proposing four days of competition on 18-21 August with 32 boys and 32 girls participating (maximum of one male ath-lete and one female athlete per country). A ranking round at 70m will take place on the first day. The second day will feature an innovative mixed gender/

The IOC also wishes young officials and young technical experts to participate the competition operations. World Archery has proposed young International Judges, acting under the responsibility of the FITA Judges Committee. These judges have been specially trained for this event and will be a good asset for the future of our sport.

World Archery a ainsi proposé des jeunes Juges Internationaux qui serviront sous la responsabilité du Comité des Juges de la FITA. Ces juges ont été entraînés spécialement pour cet événement et seront de bons atouts pour l’avenir de notre sport.

Format de compétitionIl y aura trois épreuves dans la compétition de tir à l’arc aux JOJ: Individuel Garçons, Individuel Filles et Double Mixte. La compétition se déroulera en deux phases: tout d’abord une Epreuve à 70m afin que les archers soient classés dans un tableau de matchs. Ensuite, il y aura une Epreuve Olympique en matchs à élimination directe. Les individuels et les équipes seront placés dans un tableau selon leur classement de l’Epreuve à 70m (1e contre 32e, 2e contre 31, etc.) L’Epreuve Olympique se jouera en tours éliminatoires (1/16, 1/8) et finales (1/4, 1/2, petite finale et grande finale) tant en in-dividuel que par équipe. Competition FormatThere are three events in the YOG archery competition: Boys Indi-vidual, Girls Individual and the Mixed Team. The competition con-sists of two phases: first a 70m Round for archers to achieve their seeding for the Olympic elimination round to follow. The Olympic Round has a single elimination format. Individuals and teams are placed into brackets according to their ranking round seeding (1st vs. 32nd, 2nd vs. 31st, etc.) The Olympic Round consists of the Elimi-nation Rounds (1/16, 1/8) and Final Rounds (quarterfinals, semi-finals, finals for bronze medal and gold medal) for both individual and team events. Competitors will use the new Sets System to decide the winner of their matches.

The Mixed Teams involves the qualified athletes from the indi-vidual events. A mixed team consists of two athletes of a different gender. They may be from a different or same country. Athletes are teamed up according to the ranking of each gender in the ranking round. No 1 in the Junior Men’s ranking round will pair with No 32 from the Junior Women’s ranking round, No 2 from the Junior Men’s ranking round with No 31 from the Junior Women’s

Le terrain de Kallang et le Centre de tennis adjacent font partie du Complexe Sportif de Kallang. Actuel stade des joueurs de cric-ket de Singapour, le terrain est également utiliser pour le softball.

Competition VenueNear to the city central, the Kallang Field is located in the Kallang Sports Complex, best-known for being the location of the Singa-pore Indoor Stadium and the old National Stadium, as well as the new Singapore Sports Hub.

The Kallang Field and the adjacent Tennis Centre are part of the Kallang Sports Complex. Currently, home to Singapore’s cricketers, the field is also used for Softball. Spanning an area of more than 50,000sqm, the Kallang Field was the venue for the prestigious Singer Cup Cricket Tournament in 1996, involving teams from India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka. In 1999, a one-day international tournament involving India, West Indies and Zimbabwe was also hosted there. The Kallang Field will be upgraded and converted to


host the archery competitions during the Singapore 2010 Youth Olympic Games.

Culture & Education ProgrammeThe IOC’s vision is for the YOG to be an event integrating sport, cul-ture and education. The Culture and Education Programme (CEP) forms an integral component of Singapore 2010 and will provide a memorable and inspiring experience for athletes. CEP will engage and inspire athletes to be true Olympians, to adopt and live by the Olympic values of Excellence, Friendship and Respect, and to play active roles in their communities.

The CEP comprises modular, fun and interactive activities cen-tred on the educational themes of Olympism, Skills Development, Well-Being and Healthy Lifestyle, Social Responsibility and Expres-sion. Activities based on these five themes provide the context for athletes to learn, contribute, interact and celebrate, and inspire them to better appreciate and live by the Olympic values.

Olympic bronze medallist Wietse VAN ALTEN (NED) was recently

appointed as Athlete Role Model for the 2010 Youth Olympic Games. He is now the Dutch national coach for recurve archery—Olympic discipline—and trainer in a full-time talent programme in the Netherlands. We met him at the World Cup Stage 1 in Porec, in May 2010, where he travelled as head of the Dutch delegation.

What are you doing now and what is your involvement in archery? I started working as a trainer in our Olympic Train-ing Centre in the Netherlands at the end of 2008. The reason I became a coach is that I missed out on my third Olympic Games in Beijing and had to think about the future and decide if I wanted to go on shooting, be a trainer, or maybe do something totally different. chers started training at our centre and needed a coach. The ques-tion was “do we want to hire an experienced trainer from another country or a coach from our own country and develop our own programme?” Since I like sports and especially archery, I applied for the position and they hired me. This is how I became a trainer right after my active career. I was already pursuing a coaching course before this in the Netherlands. In the middle of 2009, I also received the responsibility of our senior Olympic programme for the recurve division (Olympic discipline). So besides being a trainer at the Olympic Training Centre, I am also the coach of the Dutch senior team.

As Athlete Role Model for the Youth Olympic Games, what example and what message would you like to give to the youth? I’m really honoured that FITA asked me to be the Athlete Role Model for archery. As an archer and coach, I can be an example for young people, and I hope to inspire them. It is the first time that the Youth Olympic Games will be held. I’m very excited about this sports event. I think it will be a very special experience for athletes and coaches to be in such a big event with people from all over the world. It will be like a mini Olympic Games. I will try to help the young archers understand that it’s a great op-portunity for them to experience what the Olympic Games—the ‘big Games’—are about. This is also a part of their education, in learning and understanding how life is and how people think in other countries, etc. I think that part will also help the young archers become better athletes and individuals. I would like them to enjoy the Youth Olympics and to have fun—this is important for all sportsmen and women from all sports. When you do some-

La question s’est alors posée de savoir si nous voulions faire venir un coach expérimenté de l’étranger ou engager quelqu’un de notre pays et développer notre propre programme. Comme j’aime le sport et surtout le tir à l’arc, j’ai postulé et j’ai été engagé. C’est comme ça que je suis devenu entraîneur directement après ma carrière d’athlète. Il est vrai qu’avant cela j’avais déjà suivi des cours pour entraîneurs aux Pays-Bas. Puis, en 2009, j’ai aussi été nommé responsable de notre programme olympique senior pour l’arc classique. Donc, je suis à la fois entraîneur des juniors au Centre d’entraînement olympique et également en charge de l’équipe hollandaise senior.

En tant qu’Athlète Modèle pour les Jeux Olympiques de la Jeunesse, quel exemple et quel message aimerais-tu faire passer aux jeunes archers?

Je suis très honoré que la FITA m’ait demandé d’être l’Athlète Modèle pour le tir à l’arc. En tant qu’ancien archer olympique et entraîneur, je peux donner l’exemple aux jeunes. J’espère réussir à les inspirer. C’est la première fois que les Jeux de la Jeunesse seront organisés, et je me réjouis vraiment de cet événement. Je pense que ce sera une expérience unique pour les athlètes et les entraîneurs de participer à un tel événement réunissant des gens de tous les pays du monde. Ce sera comme des mini-Jeux Olympiques. Je vais essayer de faire comprendre aux jeunes archers que c’est une occasion de découvrir ce que sont les «vrais» Jeux Olympiques. C’est aussi quelque chose d’important pour leur formation: ils verront comment est la vie dans d’autres pays, comment sont les gens à l’étranger, etc.

Je pense que cela aidera les jeunes archers à se développer en tant qu’athlètes et en tant que personnes. J’aimerais aussi qu’ils aient du plaisir à participer à ces Jeux, qu’ils s’amu-sent, c’est très important pour tous les athlètes. Quand on fait quelque chose, il faut le faire parce qu’on aime ça. Même si on atteint le niveau d’un Tiger Woods et qu’on gagne beaucoup d’argent, c’est essentiel de continuer à aimer le sport.

Par exemple, il pleut sur le terrain ici à Porec, mais nos jeunes s’en fichent, ils pensent aux gens qui sont restés en Hollande ou qui sont coincés dans les bouchons… Ils ont l’oc-casion de voyager et ils aiment ça. Il n’y a que les popstars qui sont peut-être un peu plus gâtées! Pouvoir voyager sur les compétitions, c’est la belle vie!

Que penses-tu du niveau actuel des archers juniors?Le niveau est beaucoup plus élevé que quand j’étais junior, parce que de nombreux pays comme les Pays-Bas, la Grande-Bretagne, l’Australie, etc. ont lancé de très bons programmes pour former des équipes juniors et leur donner de bonnes bases. Par consé-quent, les archers sont toujours plus nombreux à atteindre l’élite.

Quel junior étais-tu il y a une vingtaine d’années?Au cours de ma carrière, j’ai passé énormément d’heures à tirer. Je vivais pour le tir à l’arc. J’ai quitté la maison de mes parents

thing like this, you have to do it because you like it. Even if you reach a level like Tiger Woods and earn a lot of money, it is cru-cial that you still enjoy the sport.

For example, it is raining here in Porec, but if you walk down the field with the young archers, they don’t care that it’s raining, if they think of the people who are sitting home or stuck in a traffic jam... They have the opportunity to travel and they enjoy it. Only pop stars have a little more (smile). To have the opportunity to go to countries and compete—it’s the perfect life!

What do you think of the junior archers of today?The level is much higher than when I was a junior, because many countries like the Netherlands, Great Britain, Australia and many more now have very good programmes to build up their junior teams, train them and give them the basic skills they need in ar-chery. Many countries have worked on that in the last few years, and as a result more and more archers have a higher level in sports.

Please describe your experience as a junior, some 20 years ago. If I look back on my own career, I spent many hours shooting. I lived for shooting. I moved from my parents’ house to another city at 16 in order to receive better training in archery. If I think of the way I lived when I was a junior, that’s the way many juniors do it today. I’m really jealous of the programme we have now, I wish we’d had the same programme back then!

How did you discover archery? I discovered archery when I was just 8; my best friend in el-ementary school was an archer and he invited me to go to the club with him and try archery. I went and I was very small and the bow was so big! However, I received very good instructions on how to shoot and I shot arrows in the very centre of the target: 10s! From that moment, I was hooked and it went really well for the first two months. Then I was bad for the next year and a half. My arrows went in front of the target and not into the target and I was always last at tournaments. Someone even told my father I should find another sport! But this was my sport and I never thought of quitting. I managed to get better and better and really liked it! One of the most important things when young people start archery is that they receive very good explanations on how to shoot. In order to like archery, they have to hit the centre of the target the first time. You were very dedicated to archery from a very young age... I did an interview on the radio when I was 11. At the time I was start-ing to have success as a junior and competed in my first international junior competition in Lilleshall, Great Britain. I was asked what I wanted to achieve in archery, and I said compete in the European champion-ships, maybe the world championships, maybe even the Olympics.

What inspired you when you were a junior? When I was young, and had just started, I really looked up to some of our national archers, I looked at how they were shooting and performing. I always wanted to be better and better. When you start

something very young, it kind of becomes a part of you, it becomes your way of life. For example, you don’t go to parties but go to bed in order to be able to train the next day, you watch what you eat and you practice. Everything you do is for your sport. It was and still is a pleasure, even if I had to make sacrifices. Maybe I was a little disappointed when during school holidays my friends were going to parties and I was not, because I had to train the next day. But then in Sydney when I stood on the podium and Mr EASTON put the medal around my neck... what more can you hope for?

Going into the Sydney Games, did you think you could win a medal? Of course, everybody dreams of a medal! I could realistically hope for a medal. When I went to the Olympics I had been on the na-tional team from age 16-17. By the time I moved out of my parents’ house I was shooting 1300 points at 90 metres and gained inter-national experience. In 2000, I broke the European record, in the FITA Round, with 1358 points, and I also was in the top 10 in the World Rankings. We didn’t have the World Cup back then, but there were the Grand Prix, which were somehow equivalent to a World Cup stage. I had finished 2nd in a Grand Prix in Germany and our Dutch team had become European champions. Our team had good preparation: we took part in several competitions and had a train-ing camp in Madrid. We travelled to Sydney three times, including for the Test Event. I wasn’t going to the Olympics to just compete, I was there to do the best I could and was dreaming of a medal.

Comment as-tu découvert le tir à l’arc? J’ai découvert le tir à l’arc à 8 ans; mon meilleur ami de l’école primaire en faisait et il m’a proposé d’essayer. Je me rappelle que j’étais si petit et l’arc si grand! La toute première fois, on m’a très bien expliqué comment tirer et mes flèches ont atteint le centre de la cible: des 10! Je suis devenu accro et j’ai été très bon les deux premiers mois. Puis, pendant un an et demi plus du tout. Mes flèches n’arrivaient pas dans mais devant la cible! Je finissais dernier à tous les tournois. Il y a même des gens qui ont dit à mon père qu’il fallait me trouver un autre sport! Mais le tir à l’arc était vraiment mon sport, et je n’ai jamais songé à arrêter. J’ai fini par m’améliorer et le plaisir était d’autant plus grand! Je pense que l’essentiel est de recevoir une très bonne explication sur la technique de tir la toute première fois. Pour aimer le tir à l’arc, il faut que la première flèche arrive au centre de la cible.

Dès ton plus jeune âge tu as tout donné pour le tir à l’arc…

Quand j’étais jeune, j’admirais beaucoup les archers hollandais, je m’inspirais de leur façon de tirer. Je voulais m’améliorer encore et encore. Quand vous commencez quelque chose très jeune, ça fait partie de vous, ça devient votre mode de vie. Par exemple, je ne sortais presque ja-mais le soir, j’allais me coucher tôt pour être en forme à l’entraînement le lendemain, je surveillais mon alimentation, je m’entraînais beaucoup. Tout ce que je faisais, c’était pour mon sport. C’était et c’est toujours un plaisir, même s’il faut faire des sacrifices. Peut-être que j’étais un peu frus-tré pendant les vacances scolaires quand mes amis allaient faire la fête sans moi, parce que je tirais le lendemain. Mais après, je me suis retrouvé sur le podium à Sydney, et Jim EASTON (alors président de la FITA) m’a remis la médaille de bronze… On ne peut pas rêver mieux!

Est-ce que tu t’attendais à gagner cette médaille à Sydney? Tout le monde rêve d’une médaille! J’avais de bonnes raisons d’es-pérer. Quand je suis arrivé aux Jeux Olympiques, j’avais été dans

What can you tell us about your Olympic experience? From the moment you arrive at the Games it is very special. As soon as you get off the plane everyone is there to help you. As archers we were not used to that. Then you arrive at the Olympic Village and it is a very special feeling. You live with thousands of people who have the same goals and the same dreams, no matter which country they come from. It is an opportunity to meet athletes from other sports who are very inspiring. In Sydney and Athens, I met many Dutch athletes from other sports who you never meet otherwise, because we are normally only among other archers. That was a really special experience.

What about the competition? At the beginning of the competition, like most people, I was very nervous in my first match, everything is so big, and there is an audience, which we archers are not used to. The tension was high. I think it’s very important for athletes to consider that the Olympic event itself, whether in swimming, archery, etc, is exactly the same as any other championships—you have your bow, arrows and the target. You have to take it as a normal competition. That was a way for me to put into perspective anything that happened. You see a lot of people trapped in the ‘big event’ because it’s the Olympics.

In Sydney you shot all the way to the semifinal, which you lost. Then you came back with the highest score of the tournament to win the bronze medal. How did you manage such a performance after the defeat? To be honest, I do not really remember a lot of things of the shoot-ing in Sydney. I shot against Stanislav ZABRODSKI (KAZ), then 1992 Barcelona Olympic champion Sebastien FLUTE (FRA), then

Nous avions été trois fois en Australie, entre autres pour l’Epreuve Test des Jeux. Je n’allais pas à Sydney juste pour parti-ciper, je voulais vraiment une médaille.

Que retiens-tu de ton expérience olympique?Dès qu’on arrive aux Jeux Olympiques, tout est très spécial. Dès qu’on descend de l’avion, il y a des gens qui nous aident pour chaque chose. Nous, les archers, on n’a pas l’habitude de ça. Et quand on se retrouve au Village Olympique, c’est un sentiment incroyable. On vit avec des dizaines de milliers d’athlètes qui ont les mêmes objectifs et les mêmes rêves, d’où qu’ils viennent. C’est l’occasion de rencontrer des cham-pions d’autres sports qui peuvent nous inspirer. A Sydney et à Athènes, j’ai rencontré de nombreux athlètes hollandais issus d’autres sports que je n’aurais jamais rencontrés autrement, parce qu’on est toujours entre archers. C’est vraiment une expérience unique.

Que peux-tu dire de la compétition olympique?Lors de mon premier match, comme la plupart des athlètes, j’étais très nerveux. Le stade est si grand, il y a des tribunes,

cause the bronze final was immediately after my semifinal, while my opponent Magnus PETERSSON (SWE) had 45 minutes to relax and shoot some arrows. After I lost my match, I thought it was too bad, but I didn’t have time to talk to people on why I lost. I was really focused on what I was doing and this really helped me concentrate on the match for the bronze medal.

What are you best memories of the Olympics on and off the competition field?The Sydney Olympic Games were the best ever for me, of course, because I won a medal which was a very beautiful thing. Apart from that the most memorable thing for me was to meet so many people, to be a part of the Olympic family, and then all the celebra-tions and a visit from our Queen. To be part of all this was really exciting—when I talk of all that, I get goose bumps!

Your best result at world level (3rd place) came when it counted most, at the Olympics. Do you have any explanation for that?No. When I look back on the year 2000, in terms of scores and results in competition, it was a very good year for me. The whole year was busy with only one thing: the Olympic Games. But then again, at the Olympic Games there are many archers who focus on the same targets as you do and who can win a medal. I won bronze and that’s the best thing that ever happened to me in archery, but there are many people who finished behind me who

Puis je suis sorti du terrain et j’ai dû me préparer pour la finale pour la médaille de bronze qui suivait immédiatement, alors que mon adversaire Magnus PETERSSON (SWE) avait eu 45 minutes pour se reposer et tirer quelques flèches. Quand j’ai perdu en demi-finale, j’ai à peine eu le temps de me dire que c’était très dommage; je n’ai pas eu le temps d’analyser pourquoi et d’en parler. J’ai été obligé de rester concentré sur mon tir et ça m’a vraiment aidé à gagner la médaille de bronze.

Quels sont tes meilleurs souvenirs des Jeux Olympiques sur et en dehors du terrain?Les Jeux de Sydney seront toujours les meilleurs pour moi, puisque j’ai gagné une médaille. A part ça, j’ai adoré le fait de rencontrer énormément de gens et de faire partie de la famille olympique, et toutes les célébrations au retour, ma rencontre avec la reine... C’était incroyable de vivre tout ça. Rien que d’en parler, j’en ai les frissons!Avec cette troisième place, tu as obtenu ton meilleur résultat au niveau mondial lors de la plus belle des compétitions. As-tu une explication?Pas vraiment. Si on regarde mes résultats en compétition et mes scores de l’an 2000, on peut dire que c’était une très bonne année pour moi. Toute l’année, on ne pensait qu’à une chose, les Jeux Olympiques. Mais de nouveau, aux Jeux il y a

plein d’archers qui rêvent d’une médaille. J’ai gagné le bronze et c’est la meilleure chose qui me soit arrivée dans ma carrière sportive. Mais ce jour-là, j’ai laissé derrière moi d’excellents archers qui ont mieux réussi à d’autres moments. Ça a simple-ment été ma semaine!

Qu’est-ce que cette médaille a changé dans ta vie?Pas change grand-chose, si ce n’est que je suis beaucoup plus connu dans mon pays et que ça fait bien sur mon CV! En ce qui concerne le tir à l’arc hollandais, quand une fédération gagne un médaillé olympique, ça montre que son programme d’entraî-nement est bon. Cette médaille a été très importante pour notre fédération, surtout pour le développement des jeunes archers.

Quels sont tes objectifs en tant qu’entraîneur?J’aimerais poursuivre mon travail et les programmes qu’on déve-loppe aux Pays-Bas. J’espère obtenir de bons résultats aux Jeux Olympiques en tant qu’entraîneur et élever encore le niveau du tir à l’arc dans mon pays. On y travaille dur et je suis très optimiste pour l’avenir.

A ton avis, comment pourrait-on mieux faire connaître le tir à l’arc mondialement? Je pense que c’est très difficile. A mon avis, l’adoption du système de4re. Mais le tir à l’arc a été, est et sera toujours un sport difficile à développer auprès du grand public et des médias.

Qu’aimes-tu faire en dehors de ta passion pour le tir à l’arc?Le tir à l’arc dirige ma vie! A côté de ça, j’aime la pêche et le cyclisme sur route. Depuis que je suis entraîneur, je n’ai pas beaucoup de temps libre, alors je profite dès que je peux de passer du temps avec ma copine. On vient d’acheter une mai-son et c’est un plaisir de rester chez soi et de faire des choses toutes simples comme regarder la télévision, vu que je suis si souvent en voyage! Mais mon travail c’est d’aider de jeunes archers à s’améliorer de jour en jour. J’adore ça et je ne vois pas ça comme un travail!

What did this medal change in your life?It didn’t really change much for me besides the fact that, in the Netherlands, many more people know me, and for my personal record, of course, it’s very good to mention it! As for archery in the Netherlands, when a sports federation has an Olympic medallist, it shows that their training programme is working. For our federation it was very good to have an Olympic medal—especially for the development of the young archers.

What are your hopes for your future in archery?I hope to pursue the work I’m doing and the programmes we run in the Netherlands. I hope to achieve good results as a coach at the Olympic Games and bring archery to a higher level in the Nether-lands. We’re working hard on that. I have a really positive outlook for the future.

What would be your ideas to raise the awareness of archery worldwide?I think it’s very difficult. In my opinion the changing to the sets system is a good thing, because it makes archery easier to follow. But I think archery was, is, and will always be a difficult sport to bring to the public and, media.

What are your passions and activities outside of archery?Archery decides my life (smile)! Outside of it, I really like spending my time fishing and riding my bike (road cycling). Since I started working as a trainer and coach, I don’t have much free time, so I really like to spend time with my girlfriend. We just bought a house and I’m happy to be home and do simple things like watch televi-sion, because I travel so much! But my job is to work with young people, young archers who are improving day by day. I enjoy it and don’t see it as a job or working!

o be a coach at 16 years old, a judge at 14, or participate in the management of a club

or federation projects might seem unusual. Not so for the young members of the French Archery Federation (FFTA) who can undergo training that allows them to be involved in archery be-fore they reach their 18th Birthday.

Coaches The Level 1 Coaches Course is designed so that po-tential coaches can provide adequate introduction to the sport of archery and instruct beginners to be able to compete at club competition level. This coaching course is open to all FFTA licence-holders aged from 16 years old onwards enabling those young mem-bers who already have experience in shooting to as-sist their club in being responsible of new beginners.

Young JudgesYoung licence-holders, trained from 14 years old, can judge “Youth Competitions” in their region.

The French Federation invests in young people to plan for the future

La Fédération Française mise sur les jeunes pour préparer son avenir


These competitions are reserved for young beginners. A Young Judge’s training consists of two parts: one, a theoretical summary of the rules, followed by a practical course on competitions. These young judges must then take the oath before they can officially serve.

The FFTA has 53 Young Judges. The system was launched in 2001 after testing in two regions (Poitou-Charentes and Lorraine), allowing potential judges to experience the roles and responsi-bilities. Additional supplementary training allows these judges, as soon as they are 18, to begin as an Assistant Judge and then progress as an Official Judge.

At present, a study has been undertaken in order to allow young people to become Assistant Judges earlier in the coming years.

Young ManagersA training course, open to archers between 16 and 19, has been organised every year for more than 20 years. They get theoretical and practical training with plenty of time for networking. This way, the young can get familiar with the administrative management of a FFTA club, and also learn how to put projects in place.

Every year, there is an opportunity for these young judges to participate in debates relating to aspects of the federal politics; and a chance to meet with the FFTA President.

The Young Managers are led and encouraged to involve them-selves in projects within their club, department or region. Since 2009, the Young Managers Commission has been founded in the FFTA to follow their projects in the long term.

Since 2007, the Young Managers are involved in FFTA projects and take part in their implementation on the field. This way, Young Judges and Young Managers meet every year at the Archery Youth Week.

Les jeunes dirigeants sont amenés à s’investir dans les pro-jets de leur club, leur département ou leur région. Depuis 2009, une Commission des Jeunes Dirigeants a été créée à la FFTA pour suivre leurs projets sur le long terme.

Depuis 2007, les jeunes dirigeants sont impliqués dans les pro-jets de la FFTA et participent à leur élaboration sur le terrain. Ainsi, les jeunes arbitres et les jeunes dirigeants se retrouvent chaque année sur la Semaine Jeunes du Tir à l’Arc.


La Semaine JeunesÉlaboré comme une manifestation «pour les jeunes, par les jeunes», la Semaine Jeunes du Tir à l’Arc réunit depuis sa pre-mière édition, en 2007, plus de 250 jeunes archers qui s’affrontent dans une saine ambiance. La semaine se déroule en deux temps: un tournoi individuel ouvert à tous, puis le championnat de France par équipes régionales jeunes.

L’ensemble de la compétition est organisée autour de matches de poules, permettant ainsi aux jeunes archers de s’exercer aux duels trois semaines avant le championnat de France individuel.

Les arbitres jeunes reçoivent dès leur arrivée une formation com-plémentaire leur permettant d’arbitrer, de manière autonome, toutes les compétitions de la semaine, y compris le championnat de France.

Les jeunes dirigeants, quant à eux, participent à l’organisation, notamment à travers l’animation et la mise en place de projets pilotes qu’ils ont conçus lors de leur stage. Ainsi est née, par exemple, la Charte Environnement Propreté, qui est depuis 2010 élargie à tous les championnats en France. La Charte Environne-ment Propreté comprend des projets sur le développement durable et notamment le maintien de la propreté sur les terrains et durant les compétitions. L’objectif est de zéro déchet sur en fin de journée.

Communication sur les actionsLa Commission des Jeunes Dirigeants communique sur ses ac-tions ainsi que sur les actions de la FFTA dédiées aux jeunes par le biais du site www.jeunesffta.fr.

Archery Youth WeekDesigned as an event “for the youth, by the youth”, Archery Youth Week has brought together more than 250 young archers who compete in a healthy atmosphere since its first edition in 2007. The week takes place in two parts: one individual tour-nament open to all, and then the Regional Youth Team French Championships.

The whole competition is set up as a round-robin (group match-es) tournament, thus allowing young archers to train in matches three weeks before the Individual French Championships.

When they arrive, the Young Judges receive additional training, allowing them to autonomously judge all competitions of the week, including the French Championships.

As for the Young Managers, they take part in the organisation, in particular through the animation and organisation of pilot schemes they conceived during their training course. This is how for exam-ple, the Cleanness Environment Charter was born, which has now been introduced to all French Championships since 2010. This charter includes durable environment projects and particularly the cleanness enforcement on all venues during tournaments. Zero waste is the goal at the end of the day.

Through such actions, the FFTA is confident on its youth to pre-pare a secure and successful future!

he Archery World Cup 2010 started at the beginning of May in Porec, Croatia. The ath-

letes shot the finals in the Porec Marina. Bel-gium surprised everyone by winning two indi-vidual gold medals. The team and mixed team gold medals were split between five different countries. Only the USA won twice.

For the first time in World Cup history, the ath-letes played their individual matches using the Set System. The finals were played out of the best of 5 sets of 3 arrows. The archers earned two points per set won, one point if they draw. The first who reached 6 sets points won the match.

For the first time as well, the mixed team event was official. Here is a recap of the medal matches.

Recurve MenGold Medal – Victor WUNDERLE (USA) vs Brady ELLISON (USA)Both Americans were members of the 2008 US Olympic team. Vic WUNDERLE had earlier won two Olympic medals, one silver and one bronze. This

La Coupe du Monde de Tir à l’Arc 2010 a com-mencé début mai à Porec, en Croatie. Les ath-lètes ont tiré les finales dans le port de Porec. La Belgique a surpris tout le monde en remportant deux médailles d’or individuelles. Cinq pays se sont également imposés en équipe ou double mixte, seuls les USA ont gagné deux fois.

Pour la première fois dans l’histoire de la Coupe du Monde, les athlètes ont joué leurs matchs individuels selon le Système de Sets. Les finales ont ainsi été ti-rées au meilleur des 5 sets de 3 flèches. Dans ce sys-tème, les archers gagnent deux points par set, un point seulement si le set se termine à égalité. Le premier archer qui atteint 6 points de sets remporte le match.

C’était aussi la première officielle des équipes mixtes (exhibitions auparavant). Voici un résumé des finales.

match was a remake of the Arizona Cup Final in April, where Brady ELLISON beat WUNDERLE 6-0. This time, the athletes tied at 28-28 and 29-29 in the first two sets. Brady gained his lead in the third set 30-26. A new tie in the fourth set (28-28) meant Brady was then leading 5-3. The younger American shot a good last end (10-9-10) to beat WUNDERLE’s 9-8-8. ELLISON won the gold and with his ten 10s was able to raise more money in his fight against breast cancer.

Bronze Medal – Simon TERRY (GBR) vs Jean-Charles VALLADONT (FRA)Simon TERRY was a double medallist at the Barcelona 1992 Olym-pic Games! After he came out of retirement, his team won silver at the 2007 World Championships and placed 2nd at the last World Cup Final. The young Jean-Charles VALLADONT also won the sil-ver with his team at the last World Championships. These archers had met twice before, at last year’s World Cup Stage 1 and In-door World Championships. It was both times in quarterfinals, and VALLADONT won twice 118-116. TERRY took revenge in Porec in straight sets: 27-26, 29-25, 29-26. Bronze medal for TERRY!

Recurve WomenGold Medal – Sabrina STRUYF (BEL) vs Elena KUZNETSOVA (BLR)Elena KUZNETSOVA, who placed 5th at the Ulsan World Champion-ships, had beaten the 20-year-old Sabrina STRUYF at last year’s World Cup stage 3 in Antalya. This time, STRUYF took the first set (28-22) but lost the next two (26-27, 24-27). She came back in the fourth set to tie at 4-4. Both archers shot two 10s and an 8 in the last set, resulting in a shoot-off. The Belgian archer shot a 9, while KUZNETSOVA had problems with timing and only managed an 8 at the very last second. This was the second gold medal for Belgium on the same day!

Cette finale était un remake de la finale de la Coupe d’Arizona le mois précé-dent, où ELLISON avait battu WUNDERLE 6-0. Cette fois les ath-lètes étaient plus proches l’un de l’autre, ex aequo 28-28 et 29-29 dans les deux premiers sets. Brady a ensuite fait la différence au troisième (30-26). Après une nouvelle égalité au set suivant (28-28), ELLISON était toujours en tête, 5-3. Le jeune Américain a tiré un bon dernier set (10-9-10) pour battre les 9-8-8 de WUNDERLE. Avec sa médaille d’or et ses dix 10, Brady ELLISON augmente en-core sa cagnotte dédiée à la lutte contre le cancer du sein.

She was indoor world champion in 2003, European outdoor champion in 2008 and won the team bronze in Beijing. Justyna MOSPINEK, who had won the 2008 World Cup Final in Lausanne over the several times Olympic champion PARK Sung-Hyun, and SCHUH, winner of the World Cup stage 1 in 2009, had never met before. SCHUH lost the first set (25-29), but she came back in the next two (30-16, 29-28) to lead 4-2. The archer from Poland missed her fourth set (9-9-7) which gave her French op-ponent the set and the bronze medal.

Compound MenGold Medal – Sergio PAGNI (ITA) vs Sam KYRITSOGLOU (BEL)This final featured a surprise contender, the No. 59 from quali-fications (!) Sam KYRITSOGLOU who beat the world champion WILDE in the previous round. As for Sergio PAGNI, he is the only one who has won four World Cup stages and he was the winner of the Copenhagen World Cup Final! The Italian tried to go for the hat-trick after victories in 2008 and 2009 in the Porec marina.

KYRITSOGLOU took the first set (29-28), but PAGNI won the second (28-27) to tie at 2-2. The scores of the third and fourth set were 29-28, each archer taking one set. The score was tied at 4-4 and then again at 5-5 (29-29). PAGNI scored a 9 in the shoot-off, opening the door for his opponent. The Belgian archer scored a 10 to win the gold medal.

Bronze Medal – Martin DAMSBO (DEN) vs Reo WILDE (USA)Reo WILDE, who at 36 years old is one of the most experienced

archers present in Porec, is a team world champion from Leipzig and Ulsan. Individually, he won gold at the Merida 2006 World Cup Final, Nimes 2003 World Indoor Championships and Aalborg 2005 World Indoor Championships 2005. In 2009 finally, the American managed to follow in the footsteps of his father Dee WILDE, who was world champion in 1997 and whose name has appeared on over 50 world records.

This was the first encounter between the 2009 world cham-pion WILDE and the talented Danish archer Martin DAMSBO, who has been a regular presence on the World Cup line-up since 2006. The American took the first set 30-28. The archers tied at 28-28 in the second set, so the American was leading 3 set points to 1. WILDE was perfect again in the third set (30-29) to comfort his lead 5-1. He tied the fourth set (28-28) and took the bronze medal 6-2.

Médaille de bronze - Martin DAMSBO (DEN) vs Reo WILDE (USA)Reo WILDE, l’un de archers les plus expérimentés à 36 ans, est double champion du monde par équipe (2007 et 2008). Indivi-duellement, il a remporté la Finale de Coupe du Monde à Mérida en 2006, et les Championnats du Monde en Salle 2003 et 2005. Enfin, en 2009 il est devenu champion du monde de tir extérieur, douze ans après son célèbre père Dee WILDE, qui s’était imposé en 1997.

C’était la première confrontation entre WILDE avec le talentueux Martin DAMSBO, présent sur le circuit de la Coupe du Monde de-puis 2006. Dans la marina de Porec, l’Américain n’a rien lâché dans le premier set (30-28). Les archers étaient ex aequo 28-28 dans le deuxième. L’Américain virait donc en tête 3 points de sets à 1. WILDE a été parfait une fois de plus au troisième set (30-29) pour augmenter son avance 5-1. Les deux archers ont gagné un point chacun au quatrième set (29-28), WILDE s’imposant ainsi 6-1 pour repartir avec la médaille de bronze!

Team EventsThe athletes shot their team matches according to the traditional system. Each team shot 24 arrows (4 ends of 6 arrows) and each mixed team had 16 arrows (4 ends of 4 arrows). The best total score won.

Recurve Men TeamGold Medal – India vs ItalyThese teams had already met twice at the Porec World Cup, in 2008 and 2009. It was twice in semifinals. Italy won in 2008 and India in 2009. The Italian team competing this year in Porec (Ilario DI BUO, Michele FRANGILLI, and Marco GALIAZZO) had deprived India of an Olympic qualification in a shoot-off at the 2007 Worlds. DI BUO and GALIAZZO went on to win the silver medal in Beijing.

In Porec, the Italians took a slight advantage in the first end (54-52) and gained one more point in the second (9-9-10-10-8-10 to 9-9-8-10-10-9). However, India raised their level and shot a superb 58 in the third end to lead Italy (166-164). Shooting first, the Italians brought their total to 221. The team from India had a few errors (8-9-9-9-8-9) that gave the gold to Italy.

The match for bronze was intense between Great Britain and China. They tied at 212-212. They then tied the first shoot-off at 27-27. Finally, China won 28-25 in the second shoo-off.

Recurve Women TeamGold Medal – Belarus vs UkraineBelarus had easily defeated Ukraine in the 1/8 elimination round in Ulsan. In Porec, Ukraine had a disastrous start (5-6-9-5-8-9) to trail 42-52. It seemed the wind was really affecting the archers. The Belarussians suffered even more in the second end, shooting far from their regular level (7-4-4-6-7-8). The Ukrainian archers shot 10-7-9-10-6-6. After trailing by 10 points, they came from behind to lead by 2 points! Both teams became more comfort-able in the next end. Belarus shot 8-10-X10-9-8-7 and Ukraine 6-10-8-9-X10-8. The match was still very open with the Ukraine leading 141-140. The rain stopped as archers entered into the last end. Belarus shot first and with 9-10-9-9-10-10 put the pressure on the Ukrainians, who did not want to let the medal go! They shot

Classique Hommes EquipesMédaille d’or – Inde vs ItalieCes équipes se sont déjà rencontrées deux fois à la Coupe du Monde de Porec, en 2008 et 2009. C’était chaque fois en de-mi-finale, et chaque équipe a gagné une fois. L’équipe italienne présente cette année à Porec (Ilario DI BUO, Michele FRANGILLI et Marco GALIAZZO) avait privé l’Inde d’une qualification olympique lors des Championnats du Monde 2007 au tie-break. DI BUO et GALIAZZO avaient ensuite gagné la médaille d’argent des Jeux de Beijing.

Les Biélorusses en ont souf-fert à leur tour à la volée suivante, en tirant bien loin de leur niveau habituel, 7-4-4-6-7-8 contre 10-7-9-10-6-6 pour l’Ukraine, qui a repris une avance de 2 points! Les deux équipes ont mieux tiré à la troisième volée: 8-10-X10-9-8-7 pour le Belarus et 6-10-8-9-X10-8 pour l’Ukraine. Le match était encore très ouvert avant la dernière volée, l’Ukraine ne menant que d’un point 141-140. La pluie s’est alors arrêtée de tomber pour le dernier end. Le Belarus en a profité pour revenir grâce à une superbe série de 9-10-9-9-10-10, mais les Ukrainiennes n’ont pas flanché avec 9-8-9-10-9-10. Egalité à 197-197 et barrage! Les Ukrainiennes ont tiré 10-9-10, et ont remporté la médaille d’or quand la première archère biélorusse a tiré un 8.

Mais c’est le Danemark qui a pris la tête à la première volée: X10-9-X10-9-10-X10 contre 9-9-9-X10-10-10, 58-57. Avec des scores identiques à la volée suivante (trois 9 et trois 10), le Dane-mark a conservé son point d’avance, 115-114. Les Américains ont tiré 9-10-9-10-10-9 et ont bénéficié d’un 8 de leurs adversaires danois pour revenir à égalité 171-171 avant la dernière volée. Les Américains ont conclu avec 9-10-X10-9-10-10, mais les Danois ont résisté à la pression: avec 10-9-10-10-9-X10, ils ont arraché l’égalité! Les USA ont par contre été imbattables au barrage: X10-

(three 9s and three 10s for both teams), and so Denmark was still leading by 1 point, 115-114. The Americans shot 9-10-9-10-10-9 and they benefited from an 8 from their Danish opponents to come back and tie at 171-171 before the last end.

The Americans concluded with 9-10-X10-9-10-10, putting pressure on Denmark, who did 10-9-10-10-9-X10 to tie. The USA were perfect in the shoot-off, scoring X10-X10-10! A first arrow in the 9 ring for Denmark gave the gold to the USA.

The Americans also broke the world record in qualifications with 2114 points for the three archers together.

El Salvador beat Netherlands for bronze in a close match, 226-224.

Compound Women TeamGold Medal – Russia vs USARussia and USA had met seven times since 2006, with Russia win-ning five times. In Porec, both teams comprise two athletes who were on the world team in Ulsan, where Russia had defeated the USA in semifinals. In Korea, Russia went on to win the gold, while the US had the bronze.

Americans Erika ANSCHUTZ, Jamie VAN NATTA, and Diane WATSON took the best start with 9-8-10-10-9-X10. Russia scored 9-9-10-9-9-9 to trail 55-56. USA had a disaster in the second end when Jamie VAN NATTA’s arrow missed the target and landed in the scoreboard (!) probably due to a problem with the release aid. Their scores of 9-9-9-0-10-9 allowed the Russians to come back and lead 112-102. The USA lost even more ground in the third end (9-8-10-9-9-X10 to Russia’s X10-9-10-9-10-10). This released pressure on Russia. Albina LOGINOVA, Viktoria BALZHANOVA, and Anna ARTEMOVA scored 9-9-10-10-10-9 to clinch the gold, 227-213!

Mexico beat the Netherlands for bronze, 221-227.

Recurve Mixed TeamGold Medal – USA vs ChinaThe 2008 US Olympians Brady ELLISON and Jennifer NICHOLS had the best start (9-9-10-7) over their Chinese opponents CHENG Ming and XING Yu (8-8-8-9). The Americans led 35-33 and in-creased their lead to 71-67 after a bad 7 from China in the second end. USA won the gold medal 141-139.

Italy (Michele FRANGILLI/Pia Carmen LIONETTI) won the bronze and set the record in this new event at 150 points.

Compound Mixed TeamGold Medal – Denmark vs CanadaThe Danish pair Martin DAMSBO/Camilla SOEMOD) won the Mixed Team exhibition at the 2009 World Cup Final. SOEMOD was in great shape, having placed 4th at the World Championships and 2nd at the World Cup Final in 2009. However, Canada was composed of the 2007 world champion Dietmar TRILLUS who paired with Ashley WALLACE.

The Canadians led 38-37 after the first end, and a bad 6 from SOEMOD in the second end further increased the gap (76-72). Canada had a perfect end of 40 to lead 116-109 and win the gold 154-147.

The American pair Reo WILDE/Jamie VAN NATTA won the bronze with a new world record score of 158 points!

Les Américaines avaient quant à elles gagné la médaille de bronze. Les Améri-caines Erika ANSCHUTZ, Jamie VAN NATTA et Diane WATSON ont pris le meilleur départ (9-8-10-10-9-X10) devant la Russie (9-9-10-9-9-9) pour mener 56-55. Les USA ont joué de malchance quand une flèche de Jamie VAN NATTA a raté la cible et atterri dans le tableau des scores, probablement à cause d’un problème de décocheur. Ceci a permis le retour de la Russie, qui a alors mené 112-102. Les Américaines ont encore perdu du terrain à la troisième volée (9-8-10-9-9-X10 contre X10-9-10-9-10-10 à la Russie). Albina LOGINOVA, Viktoria BALZHANOVA et Anna ARTE-MOVA ont pu conclure sans trop de pression et, avec 9-9-10-10-10-9, ont gagné l’or à l’avant-dernière flèche, 227-213!

he athletes at the Antalya World Cup stage had the honour on 11 June to shot their bronze and

gold medal matches in front of many influential sport dignitaries, including five IOC Members.

Attending the event were Dr Thomas BACH (GER), Vice President of the International Olym-pic Committee (IOC) and President of the German Olympic Committee, Mr Sergey BUBKA (UKR), Se-nior Vice President of IAAF, President of the Ukrai-nian Olympic Committee and IOC Member, Dr WU Ching-Kuo (TPE), President of AIBA and IOC Mem-ber, Prof CHANG Ung (PRK), IOC Member, and Prof Dr Ugur ERDENER (TUR), President of FITA and IOC Member. Mr Masato MIZUNO, Chairman of Mizuno Inc. was also in attendance.

After the Set System that was introduced in Porec, Antalya was the first event where Hit/Miss targets were used for the compound competition.

The Hit/Miss target simply gives 1 point if the archers reach the hit zone, instead of 10-1 point system of the traditional target. Here is a recap of the matches that took places on beach side of the World of Won-ders hotel complex in Kundu-Antalya.

Recurve Men Gold Medal – Michele FRANGILLI (ITA) vs JING Xianqing (CHN)The individual recurve finals were played out of the best of 5 sets of 3 arrows. The 2003 world champion FRANGILLI started this final with 9-10-9, while his opponent, seeded No. 15 in Antalya, shot 9-10-8. The Italian led 2 set points to 0, but weak scores in the second set (8-X10-8) allowed JING to come back with 9-9-10 to tie 2-2. The Chinese archer then shot X10-X10-8 to beat FRANG-ILLI’s 8-9-9 and lead 4-2. The Italian shot X10-9-9 in the last set, and JING started with 9 and X10, meaning he needed a 10 to win. And he did to win his first gold medal at this level.

Bronze Medal – Brady ELLISON (USA) vs Shungo TABATA (JPN)The winner of the World Cup stage 1 in Porec Brady ELLISON looked very disappointed after losing the semifinal in a shoot-off. In the afternoon, he shot 9-X10-9 to win the first set over the No. 14 Shungo TABATA, who shot 10-9-8. Both archers shot three times the same score in the second set: three 10s for ELLISON and three 9s for TABATA. The American led 4-0, but suffered a bad 8 in the third set, which he lost 27-28. ELLISON quickly re-covered from that mistake and threw out a perfect 30 to win the bronze 6-2. This victory allowed him to shoot more 10s, which meant two things for ELLISON: he solidified his lead in the rank-ing for the Longines Prize of Precision; and with his podium finish he raised more money in his campaign “Shoot for the Cure” to help fight breast cancer.

L’Italien menait 2-0, mais ses flèches assez faibles au deuxième set (8-X10-8) ont permis à JING de revenir avec 9-9-10 pour égaliser à 2-2. L’archer chinois a enchaîné avec X10-X10-8 pour battre les flèches à 8-9-9 de FRANGILLI et mener 4-2. L’Ita-lien a tiré X10-9-9 au dernier set. JING a quant à lui commencé par 9 et X10. Il lui fallait ainsi un 10 pour gagnant, ce qu’il a fait! C’est sa première médaille d’or à ce niveau de compétition.

Médaille de bronze – Brady ELLISON (USA) vs Shungo TABATA (JPN)Le leader des qualifications et gagnant de la Coupe du Monde Etape 1 à Porec Brady ELLISON était très déçu après sa défaite en demi-finale face à FRANGILLI. Il s’est rattrapé en entamant le match par 9-X10-9 pour remporter le premier set face au no 14 Shungo TABATA, qui a tiré 10-9-8. Trois 9 pour Les deux archers ont fait trois fois les mêmes scores au deuxième set: trois 10 pour l’Américain, trois 9 pour le Japonais. After her team silver the day before in Antalya, she was hoping for gold this time! However, she shot only 9-9-8 in the first set, while KOVAL shot 9-10-9. The Ukrainian led 2-0. STE-PANOVA reacted strongly in the second set with a perfect 30 to tie at 2-2. She then scored 10-9-9 (against 8-9-9 to KOVAL) to take the lead 4-2. KOVAL showed how much she wanted to win by shoot-ing 9-9-10 (8-9-9 for STEPANOVA) to tie at 4-4 before the last set. The Russian archer concluded with 8-9-7. KOVAL easily took the set with 9-X10-8 and won the gold medal to the delight of Sergey BUBKA, IOC Member and former pole vault Olympic champion. Vic-toriya could not have hoped for a better present for her 25th birthday!

BUBKA said: “This is very exciting! I enjoy watching archery! I was already there when Viktor RUBAN won the Olympic gold in Bei-jing. Viktoriya KOVAL’s match today was exciting, because both ar-chers had the lead one after the other. Victoriya had to adapt, to fight and at the end she took the victory. This is great sport! I also like this special field beside the beach in Antalya. It is OK that athletes need to adapt to different conditions. In my time, we also had to adjust to different surface, different atmosphere. The 25-year-old Martin DAMSBO has a lot of experience on the World Cup circuit: he was 4th in Porec and 5th last year in An-talya. His major achievement came at the 2007 Worlds, where he placed 3rd. DAMSBO recently placed 7th at the European Champi-onships in Rovereto. The 24-year-old Braden GELLENTHIEN also has a lot of experience. The 2003 world silver medallist is also a multiple World Cup event winner (2009 World Cup stage 1 in Santo Domingo, 2007 stage 2 in Varese). He was also indoor world champion in 2007 in Izmir, and in 2007 placed at both the Outdoor

World Championships and the World Cup Final. After his 2nd place finish in Antalya in 2009, Braden clearly wanted to win this time. In semifinals he had the best match of the competition with 11 hits out of a possible 12.

GELLENTHIEN was hoping to perform better than last year, where he had lost the gold medal final. However, he had only one hit in the first set and two in the second. Meanwhile, DAMSBO had a perfect start with six hits to lead 4-0. The third set ended in a draw (1-1) and so did the fourth (3-3), moving the score to 5-1 and 6-2 for DAMSBO. The Danish archer looked nervous in the fifth set, hitting only one arrow. GELLENTHIEN shot twice in the gold to recover two set points and trail 4-6. In the final set, the American managed three hits, putting the pressure on his opponent. De-spite his nervousness, evidenced by ever increasing holding times, DAMSBO gave the perfect answer with three hits to win 7-5. It is the first gold in a major international competition for the Danish archer!

Bronze Medal – Vladas SIGAUSKAS (LTU) vs Rodger WILLET Jr. (USA) It was the first match between the experienced Vladas SIGAUSKAS, who just missed a medal in Rovereto (4th), and Rodger WILLET Jr. The American, who was team world champion in 2007, was mak-ing his first appearance on the World Cup this season.

In Antalya, WILLET was perfect in his first two sets with six hits. Meanwhile, SIGAUSKAS had to wait until the third arrow to find the gold, where he stayed through the end of the second set. The American led 3-1. He shot another perfect set to increase his lead to 5-1. SIGAUSKAS went to congratulate his opponent, thinking the

Le vice-champion du monde 2003 a gagné plusieurs étapes de Coupe du Monde (Etape 2 à Varese en 2007 et Etape 1 à Saint-Domingue en 2009). Il a été champion du monde en salle en Turquie en 2007, année où il a aussi terminé 2e aux Championnats du Monde de Tir Extérieur et à la Finale de Coupe du Monde.

GELLENTHIEN espérait certainement faire mieux qu’à la Coupe du Monde d’Antalya l’année passée, où il était 2e. Mais il n’a tiré qu’une flèche dans le jaune au premier set, et deux au deuxième, alors que DAMSBO a enchaîné six tirs parfaits pour mener 4-0. Le troisième set s’est terminé par une égalité (1-1), tout comme le quatrième (3-3), portant le score à 5-1 puis 6-2 pour DAMSBO. Le Danois était très tendu au cinquième set, avec une seule réussite. GELLENTHIEN a tiré deux fois dans le jaune pour récupérer deux points de sets et n’être plus mené que 4-6. Au set décisif, l’Américain a mis encore plus de pression sur son adversaire avec trois hits. Malgré sa nervosité, DAMSBO a tiré à son meilleur niveau de précision: trois hits et victoire 7-5! C’est la première médaille d’or dans une compétition internationale majeure pour le Danois.

Compound Women Gold Medal – Erika ANSCHUTZ (USA) vs Nicky HUNT (GBR)A former junior world champion, Erika ANSCHUTZ defeated world champion Albina LOGINOVA and European champion Viktoria BAL-ZHANOVA from Russia to advance to the gold final. As for Nicky HUNT, she was 4th at the World Cup Final in Copenhagen and recently placed 7th at the European Championships in Rovereto. She had won in Porec in 2009 and placed 2nd at the first World Cup event this year.

In this final ANSCHUTZ hit only her first arrow in the first set, while HUNT shot her last two in the gold to take the lead 2-0. But ANSCHUTZ came back with three hits in the second set to tie at 2-2. The score then moved to 3-3 after both archers shot one hit each. The American hit two of her next three shots to take a serious advantage over her opponent, 5-3. Both archers started their fifth set with two hits. Then HUNT missed her last shot, and ANSCHUTZ shot a hit just on the line for the victory. It was the first medal for the young American at this level!

Bronze Medal – Anne LANTEE (FIN) vs Ashley WALLACE (CAN)Anne LANTEE (the former Anne LAURILA) wanted to improve from her 4th place at last year’s World Cup stage 2. She was in great form, having placed 6th in May at the European Championships. However, Ashley WALLACE, who was 5th in Ulsan and won the World Cup stage 1 a month before, won the first set with only one hit in her last set. With three hits to one in the next set, she increased her lead to 4-0. The archer from Finland reacted with two arrows in the gold to gain back two points, 2-4. WALLACE was perfect in the fourth set to take back a four-point lead, 6-2. A tie in the last set would win the match for the Canadian, and that is what happened. Both archers shot one hit, victory 7-3 and bronze medal for WALLACE!

Recurve Men TeamGold Medal – India vs USAThe team from India (Rahul BANERJEE, Mangal Singh CHAMPIA, Jayanta TALUKDAR) made it to their second consecutive World Cup team final, previously losing to Italy in Porec, were to meet team USA. India has already met the USA five times previ-ously in World Cup competition winning on all five occasions. This made Americans Brady ELLISON, Richard JOHNSON and Victor WUNDERLE very hungry for revenge.

A bad start, a 6, by Vic WUNDERLE caused the USA to trail India 50-54. The Americans recovered closing the deficit in the next end (10-X10-9-9-8-8 to India’s 8-9-9-8-8-9). India was then leading by just a point, 105-104. A third end of 57 (9-9-10-10-X10-9) al-lowed the Indian archers to increase their lead to 162-157. The USA

USA (Ben CLELAND, Braden GELLENTHIEN, Rodger WILLET Jr.) took the lead from the start 2-0 (2-1). Both teams shot two hits in the second set. Meaning, the USA were still leading, 3-1. South Africa shot a perfect third end, while the USA had more trouble with the wind and managed only one hit, allowing South Africa to come back 3-3. The South African archers stayed in the yellow in the next set, but this time their performance was watched by the Americans. South Africa was perfect again in the fifth set (for a total of nine hits in a row!) to win two more set points and lead 6-4. Both teams shot only one hit in the sixth set, which meant victory 7-5 for the South Africans. It is the first ever gold medal at this level for this team. Congratulations to Nico BENADE, Seppie CILLIERS and Riaan CROWTHER!

For bronze, Great Britain beat the Netherlands 8-4.

Their op-ponent, No. 4 seed, Iran (Ensieh HAJIANZEHALI, Seyedeh-Vida, HALIMIANAVVAL, Parsamehr MAHTAB) defeated the No. 1 seed USA earlier in the week to advance to the final.

De plus, les USA avaient déjà battu l’Afrique du Sud aux Championnats du Monde d’Ulsan l’année dernière sur le score de 235-225.

Les Américains (Ben CLELAND, Braden GELLENTHIEN et Rodger WILLET Jr.) ont pris la tête d’entrée 2-0 (2-1). Les deux équipes ont tiré deux flèches dans le jaune au set suivant, pour faire évoluer le score à 3-1. L’Afrique du Sud a réussi un troisième set parfait, alors que les USA ont eu plus de difficultés avec le vent et n’ont atteint le jaune qu’a une reprise, ce qui a permis aux Sud-Africains d’égaliser 3-3. Ces derniers ont continué leur série parfaite avec encore trois hits, que les Américains ont cette fois égalisés. Au cinquième set, les Sud-Africains ont réitéré leur per-formance parfaite (soit neuf hits d’affilée!) et ont empoché encore 2 points de sets. L’Afrique du Sud menait alors 6-4. Chaque équipe a réussi un hit au sixième set, et ce sont donc les Sud-Africains qui se sont imposés 7-5. C’e st la première médaille d’or à ce niveau pour cette équipe. Bravo à Nico BENADE, Seppie CILLIERS et Riaan CROWTHER!

Pour le bronze, la Grande-Bretagne a battu les Pays-Bas, 8-4.

Poulies Femmes EquipesMédaille d’or – Iran vs RussieLa Russie est championne du monde en titre, et l’équipe présente à Antalya (Anna ARTEMOVA, Viktoria BALZHANOVA, Albina LOGI-NOVA) a gagné la médaille d’or le mois précédent à Porec. Quant aux Iraniennes (Ensieh HAJIANZEHALI, Seyedeh-Vida HALIMIANA-VVAL, Parsamehr MAHTAB), classées têtes de série no 4, elles ont battu les Américaines, no 1, pour atteindre la finale.

Ce match a commencé par une égalité 1-1 (2 hits pour chaque équipe). Puis, l’Iran a pris deux points de retard sur la Russie en tirant trois flèches dans le rouge. Les spectateurs russes ont ma-nifesté leur joie alors que la Russie menait 3-1, puis 4-2 après un nouveau set à égalité. La Russie a gagné le quatrième set grâce à deux flèches dans le jaune (et aucune réussite pour les Iraniennes). L’Iran n’a tiré qu’une fois dans le jaune au cinquième set. Les Russes ont répliqué par un hit et un miss, puis LOGINOVA a tiré dans le jaune pour offrir l’or à son pays!

In Antalya, the Americans took a one-point advantage in the first end (10-9-9-9 to 8-9-10-9). The USA led 37-36, but NICHOLS suffered two 8s in the next end to give the lead to China, 74-71. The American pair lost two more points in the third end (9-9-8-10 to 10-8-10-10) and could not nail the 10 ring in the last end (9-9-8-9). With four 9s and a total score of 148-142, China won the gold in this category.

The French duo of Romain GIROUILLE/Berengere SCHUH won the bronze over the Russians Baljinima TSYREMPILOV/Ksenia PEROVA, 149-143.

Compound Mixed TeamGold Medal – Mexico vs DenmarkMexico had a perfect start with 4 hits to lead Denmark 2-0. How-ever, Mexico were not as solid in the second set, but still managed to win 2 hits to 1. In the third set, Denmark shot three hits that were then matched by the Mexicans. Each team took one set point, moving the score to 5-1. It was the gold medal for Mexico’s Julio Ricardo FIERRO and Linda OCHOA! Camilla SOEMOD and Mar-tin DAMSBO settled for silver again after their second place last month in Porec.

The bronze medal went to USA (Duane PRICE/Erika ANSCHUTZ) who beat Italy (Sergio PAGNI/Anastasia ANASTASIO) 6-2.

Le Prix Longines de la PrécisionLe Prix Longines de la Précision a été lancé en 2010. Les deux archers les plus précis de la saison de Coupe du Monde remporte-ront le trophée, une montre et 5’000 francs suisses.

Les athlètes en arc classique concourront pour le Prix lors des années paires, alors que ceux des arcs poulies s’y mesureront lors des années impaires. Cette année, ce sont les tireurs en arc classique hommes et femmes qui auront réalisé le plus de 10 du-rant les qualifications et les matchs individuels lors de la Coupe du Monde qui remporteront ce trophée. La course pour le Prix Lon-gines de la Précision devrait ainsi durer jusqu’à la Finale de Coupe du Monde à Edimbourg.

Ce n’est pas une surprise de voir l’Américain Brady ELLISON au sommet du classement du Prix Longines de la Précision avec 118 tirs dans le 10. L’Italien Michele FRANGILLI en a 99, le Russe Baljinima TSYREMPILOV (RUS) 96 et l’Américain WUNDERLE 90.

Du côté des femmes, la leader du classement de Coupe du Monde est également en tête du Prix Longines. Cependant, l’écart est plus serré que chez les hommes. Longines Prize for PrecisionThe Longines Prize for Precision for archery was launched in 2010. The two most precise archer will win the trohy, a watch (please see below) and a 5,000 Swiss Francs

The recurve athletes will compete for the Prize in even-years, while the compound athletes will shoot for it in odd-years. This year the recurve men and women athletes who shoot the most 10s during all individual qualifications and matches of the World Cup will win the prize. The race for the Longines Prize for Preci-sion should go on until the very last match at the World Cup Final in Edinburgh

It is no surprise that Brady ELLISON (USA) is on top of the Longines Prize for Precision with 118 shots in the 10-ring. Michel FRANIGILLI (ITA) has 99, Baljinima TSYREMPILOV (RUS) 96, and Vic WUNDERLE (USA) 90.

n 2009, FITA Congress passed the proposal for changing from the elimination round of

12 arrows to a new system based on sets and matches.

There were several reasons for this. The main reason was that in the strategic World Archery Plan for 2007-2012, one focus was on ‘Events’. Among several aspects of this that were identified, FITA wanted to address the fact that, on a 12-ar-row Olympic Round match, there were sometimes matches that would be essentially lost after one end

due to a bad (perhaps, unlucky) shot. The archer who shot the bad arrow would fall too far behind his opponent in the scoring. When there is a 10 or more point gap between shooters, audiences quickly lose interest.

Another possible motivation for this was that, in several high profile events, such as the 2005 World Championships, the No. 1 men’s recurve archer was defeated by the No. 64 archer, because of one bad shot. Many observers did not feel that these situations were fair to the top qualifiers. The new format is felt to be fairer to the more consistently good shooter.

What is the new format?All matches until the quarterfinals consist of a maximum of three sets of six arrows per set.

Le vainqueur de chaque match est déterminé par le nombre de points de sets remportés, et non par la valeur des flèches.

Le match est terminé quand les quatre points de sets sont at-teints au meilleur des trois sets.

The winner of each set, the athlete who gets the highest cumu-lative score with his six arrows, gets two set points. If the set is tied each athlete gets one set point.

The winner of the match is determined by the number of set points won, rather than the value of the arrows.

The match winner is the first to reach four set points. The match is over once the four set points are reached within the three sets.

If the match is tied, a one-arrow (only!) shoot-off will be used to break the tie. If the arrows score the same, the archer whose arrow is closest to the centre will get one extra point and wins.

The athletes shoot their arrows simultaneously and have four minutes to shoot six arrows.

FinalsFor quarterfinals through medal matches, the match changes to a maximum five sets of three arrows per set.

The match winner this time is the first to achieve six points. If the match is tied, again, a one-arrow shoot-off will be used to break the tie. In the tie-break, the archer whose arrow is closest to the centre gets the win.

For quarterfinals and semifinals, the athletes shoot their arrows simultaneously and have two minutes to shoot three arrows.

For medal matches, the athletes will alternate each arrow and will have 20 seconds per arrow. In alternate shooting, the athlete trailing in the match shoots first (based on set points, not arrow score). In case of a tie, the original shooting order is maintained.

It is noteworthy that all the individual matches at the Olympic Games in London 2012 will be conducted using the finals format.

By breaking down the match with sets of three or six arrows, this format still gives a chance to the better archer who experi-ences one bad or unlucky shot to beat his opponent with con-sistency—or even survive an equipment failure. It also turns out that often, more matches are contested until the last arrow. That certainly brings more excitement to the competition, as we have already seen in the first events of the season with the new system.

En passant à des matches en sets de trois ou six flèches, ce for-mat donne toujours une chance au meilleur archer qui a connu un mauvais tir de battre son adversaire grâce à une plus grande régu-larité, ou même de se remettre d’un problème de matériel. Il arrive aussi souvent qu’un plus grand nombre de matches restent indécis jusqu’à la toute dernière flèche. Cela apporte un plus grand intérêt à la compétition, comme nous avons déjà pu le constater au cours des premières épreuves de la saison utilisant le nouveau système.

Grâce aux nombreux archers de haut niveau du monde entier qui ont concouru dans les premières compétitions majeures se-lon le nouveau système de sets, telles que la première étape de Coupe du Monde 2010 et les Championnats d’Europe 2010, un certain nombre d’observations ont été faites quant au système de sets et aux qualités mentales nécessaires pour réussir au plus haut niveau.

system, such as the first stage of the 2010 Archery World Cup, and the 2010 European Outdoor Championships, there have been some additional revelations about the new set system and the mindset needed to succeed with the new round at the highest levels.

A high pressure gameIn one sense, the set system takes some pressure off the archers because you can have a bad arrow and stay in the game. However, you still need to win the three or six-arrow set when it matters. This requires a different mindset from the older elimination round, where an archer could get ahead in score and then feel less pres-sure toward the end.

With the set system, since every end is important, there is a higher stress level for every end of three or six arrows. Also there is even more of a requirement for total concentration through the entire match.

One other aspect of the set system that comes into play is the possibility that the total raw score of the winning archer might not be as high as the total raw score of the loser. This makes the focus on each and every set even more important than in the past.

Single arrow focus and winning coach techniquesIn the World Cup 2010 Stage 1, FITA TV had each archer’s coach wired with a microphone to catch the interchange between coach and archer. In almost every case of a winning shooter, it was inter-esting to note that the coach served in a very active role, constantly talking to the shooter and working to keep their focus throughout the matches. In nearly every case the coach actively worked on get-ting the shooter to shoot each and every shot quickly and smoothly.

With the new, 20-second timing per arrow in the set system, it was more critical than ever to be mentally prepared to shoot a good shot right from the start of the shot sequence. While this is always important, it was very clear that in cases where archers had to let down there was almost no time left to restart a well-composed shot. Every shooter who let down, actually lost their set. This made the importance of a confident pre-shot mental prepara-tion very evident.

ConclusionWhile it is still early in the season it appears that the new set sys-tem has already been very successful in terms of maintaining audi-ence interest and also, finding the most consistent shooter who can perform under pressure. The pressure level of the new format is definitely increased and the most successful shooters have been those who have learned to respond to and overcome this pressure.

So far, taking the approach of shooting one decisive shot at a time (almost shooting as if each arrow is a shoot-off arrow) seems to be producing the most wins. As the season progresses and more information is developed we will bring it to you. And, you can see the top shooters competing in the set system all season at www.archery.tv, on the internet.

Un jeu à haute tensionDans un sens, le système de sets enlève une partie de la pres-sion subie par les archers, puisqu’on peut tirer une mauvaise flèche et rester dans le jeu malgré tout. Cependant, il faut quand même gagner le set à trois ou six flèches au moment le plus important. Cela demande une approche mentale dif-férente par rapport à l’ancienne épreuve éliminatoire, où un archer pouvait prendre de l’avance au score puis avoir moins de pression vers la fin.

Avec le système de sets, comme chaque volée est importante, il y a un plus grand niveau de stress à chaque volée de trois ou six flèches. Ce système demande une concentration encore plus grande tout au long du match.

Un autre aspect propre au système de sets est la possibilité que le score total de toutes les flèches tirées de l’archer gagnant ne soit pas aussi haut que le score total du perdant. Cela demande ainsi une concentration sur chaque volée encore plus grande que par le passé.

Concentration sur une seule flèche et techniques gagnantes des entraîneursA la première étape de Coupe du Monde 2010, les entraîneurs portaient des micros permettant à FITA TV de retransmettre leurs conversations avec les archers. Pour presque tous les vainqueurs, il était intéressant de constater que le coach jouait un rôle très actif, parlant constamment à son archer et travaillant à garder sa concentration pendant toute la durée des matches. Dans presque tous les cas, l’entraîneur travaillait activement pour que son archer tire chaque flèche rapidement et avec dextérité.

Avec le nouveau minutage de 20 secondes par flèche dans le système de sets, il est devenu plus important que jamais d’être bien préparé mentalement pour réussir une bonne flèche dès le début de la séquence de tir. Il est clairement ressorti que les ar-chers qui ont redescendu leur arc (ce qui a toujours été un élément important) n’avaient ensuite presque plus le temps de recommen-cer un tir calme et posé. Tous les archers qui ont baissé leur arc ont en effet perdu leur set. Cela rend donc l’importance d’une bonne préparation mentale d’avant-tir encore plus évidente.

ConclusionMême s’il est encore tôt dans la saison, on peut dire que le nouveau système de sets a déjà rencontré un franc succès auprès du public et également dans l’identification des tireurs les plus performants sous la pression. Le nouveau format a sans aucun doute augmenté le niveau de tension, et les tireurs qui ont eu le plus de succès sont ceux qui ont appris à réagir en surmontant cette pression.

Jusqu’ici, l’approche consistant à faire un tir décisif à chaque fois (presque comme si chaque flèche était un tir de barrage) semble être celle qui apporte le plus de victoires. Tout au long de la saison, nous vous informerons des informations qui se présen-teront à nous au sujet de ce nouveau format de compétition. he Indoor World Archery Challenge was born in 2010! The archers in recurve and com-

pound, men and women who participated in both the Tournaments of Nimes and Las Vegas 2010 qualified for this new world class event which took place in Las Vegas on 20 February 2010.

The Indoor World Archery Challenge 2010 as-sembled the first eight archers per category in recurve and compound, men and women, for a total of 32 archers. They qualified based on their performances at the Tournaments of Nimes and Las Vegas.

A combined ranking was established based on the results of the Tournament of Nimes and the results after the 60 arrows shot on Friday and Saturday at the Tournament of Las Vegas. This combined ranking included only the archers tak-ing part in both tournaments (mandatory rule).

The Indoor Challenge followed the pattern of quarterfinals, semifinals and finals matches ac-cording to the FITA rules for international indoor archery (with the exception of arrow diameter).

Recurve MenBrady ELLISON (USA), who had won the 2009 Las Vegas event and finished 4th in the European leg, was the strongest on home soil. He qualified for the semifinals along with the winner of Nimes Michelle FRANGILLI (ITA) and two members of the French team who won the silver at the 2009 World Championships, Thomas AUBERT and Jean-Charles VALLADONT. ELLISON easily defeated FRANGILLI 118-114 for gold. The two French archers AUBERT and VALLADONT met in the bronze medal match, where the second won 115-115, 10-9.

Olympian Brady ELLISON will try to shoot more 10s than ever this season.

He started the campaign “Shoot for the Cure” to help fight breast cancer and will pledge money for every X or 10 he shoots. He is also shooting with a pink bow matching the pink wristbands he is selling for the cause. We caught up with him at the Porec World Cup. Read our interview and join him in his campaign!

Congratulations Brady on your campaign “Brady Shoot for the Cure”! How did you become involved in this project?A couple years ago my coach died from cancer and I wanted to raise funds to try to find a cure for breast cancer. It’s something that I really wanted to do. I wasn’t able to do it the year he died, but this year I asked my Mom to help me out and get a foun-dation going. We ended up partnering with Susan G. KOMEN (website www.komenphoenix.org). So many people are affected by breast cancer. I figured that every little bit helps, and if we can find a cure for breast cancer it might help find a cure for other forms of cancer too.

I’ve started the campaign this season at the Ari-zona Cup and I’m going to do it individually until the Olympic for sure. I’ll try to get a foundation started in order to donate to several diseases like heart dis-eases or hospital for the kids. In the future I would also like to raise funds to help young athletes who can’t afford to travel to archery tournaments.

What message would you like to send to the archery fans?Any donation would be greatly appreciated and I

How did you train this winter? Did you make any specific plan with your coach?Not really. This winter we shot a lot. I’m training full time at the Olym-pic Training Centre in Chula Vista (USA) under Coach LEE along with a dozen other resident athletes. This year I took a little more time to train and I went to Nimes, France for the European Indoor Tourna-ment. In January my coaches and I started to make changes in my technique that I felt I needed to make. In indoor I kind of struggled a little bit shooting in the new format. But I think technically I’m better than I’ve ever been and getting better each day. Right now I’m just trying to shoot a lot of arrows and do well in the World Cup.

What are your expectations for this season?I was planning on making the World Cup, but now that they moved the Final from the top 4 to the top 7 archers I know I will make it. At the end of the year I hope to be in the top 3-4 in the World Rank-ing. Archery is a completely different game now that we have the set system – the overall score doesn’t matter at all anymore – so I absolutely don’t know how it’s going to go.

tion to famous actor Russell CROWE who played Robin Hood in the recently launched movie. He shared this wonderful experience with us.

How did you get to give archery lessons to Russell CROWE for the 2010 Robin Hood movie? Who and how did they contact you?

I am well known in Australia as an instructor and coach. I am also a collector of archery history with over 500 bows and other memorabilia in my collec-tion going back to the late 1800’s. As well as my involvement in modern high performance archery, I have an interest and background in historical ar-chery making my own longbows as a hobby. The producers in the US contacted me as it appears I was recommended. We could not get our hands on any of the bows or arrows that would be used in the

movie so I made some longbows and arrows that resembled tradi-tional English longbows of the period which were used for training and practice.

When, where and how did these lessons take place?I was not the official archery coach for the movie. This was a person in England but I was asked to provide personal instruction to Russell. He is a perfectionist and never undertakes a movie role unless he is totally prepared. The instruction was done on his farm which is some 500km north of Sydney over a period of about 12 months, usually over weekends.

What kind of advice did you give him?He needed to learn barebow archery with traditional side of face anchor to fit into the movie’s script and to shoot a longbow. He had never done archery so it was the basics at first and then develop-ing a technique that would demonstrate that he was an experi-enced archer. We also spent a lot of time training to nock, draw and shoot an arrow while running as this was called for in the script. The important point was to make it appear he was totally at home with shooting a bow. I think this was achieved.

How was your relationship with the actor and how would you define him as a person?He is a great person and very professional, totally dedicated to getting the role correct in every way.

Quand, où et comment se sont déroulées ces leçons?Je n’étais pas l’entraîneur de tir à l’arc officiel pour le film, c’était un Anglais. Mais on m’a demandé de donner une formation per-sonnelle à Russell. Il est perfectionniste et ne joue jamais un rôle à moins d’être parfaitement préparé. La formation s’est déroulée dans une ferme à environ 500 km au nord de Sydney sur une période d’une douzaine de mois, le plus souvent durant les week-ends.

Quel genre de conseils lui avez-vous donné?Il avait besoin d’apprendre à tirer avec un arc nu en utilisant des repères sur le côté du visage afin que cela convienne pour le script du film, et il a également appris à tirer avec un arc droit. Comme il n’avait jamais fait de tir à l’arc, il fallait tout d’abord lui apprendre les bases, puis développer une technique qui puisse faire de lui un archer expérimenté. Nous avons aussi passé beaucoup de temps à entraîner l’encochage, l’allonge et le tir en pleine course, puisque cet exercice était demandé dans le scénario. Le point important était de faire comme s’il était tout à fait à l’aise pour tirer à l’arc, et je pense qu’on a réussi.

Quelle a été votre relation avec l’acteur et comment le décririez-vous en tant que personne?C’est une personne vraiment bien et très professionnelle, totale-ment dévouée au fait de jouer correctement son rôle de toutes les façons possibles.

Avez-vous été impliqué dans le film d’autres manières?Pas directement. Il y avait la possibilité d’être figurant, mais c’était en Angleterre et cela m’aurait de toute façon pris trop de temps. Nous avons parlé de divers aspects du film et de mon avis sur la façon dont le tir à l’arc devait y être présenté. C’est moi qui ai ainsi suggéré de montrer des ralentis des flèches quittant l’arc, et si vous avez vu le film, ces ralentis sont présents.

Avez-vous des anecdotes amusantes ou particulières à nous donner sur le temps que vous avez passé avec Russell CROWE?Nous avons eu des sessions très matinales faites de travail phy-sique, de longs parcours en VTT et des entraînements d’équitation. L’un de mes meilleurs souvenirs est le temps passé dans sa ferme, un endroit magnifique qui se situe sans doute dans la plus belle partie de la côte est de l’Australie. Dans cette ferme, il y a une im-portante population de kangourous et bien d’autres animaux indi-gènes, y compris un assez grand serpent que j’ai essayé d’éviter…

Have you been involved in the movie in any other ways?Not directly. There was a chance to be an extra but that was in England and required too much time away. We did talk about vari-ous aspects of the movie and my thoughts on how archery should be portrayed. I did suggest that slow motion shots of arrows leav-ing the bow would be interesting and if you have seen the movie, they were.

Do you have any funny/special anecdotes to give about the time you spent with Russell CROWE?There were some early morning sessions fitting in between gym work, long mountain bike rides and horse riding training. One memory is of his farm, which is a wonderful place located in ar-guably the best part of the east coast of Australia. The farm has a large population of kangaroos, and many other native animals, including quite a large snake (I avoided it).

What will be your best memories from this experience?I only had a small part to play in the movie but I am looking forward to the long term benefits for the sport. I was particularly interested in making sure the sport is portrayed accurately and in a positive manner. I think the movie has achieved that goal and will be great promotion for the sport.

Quels sont les meilleurs souvenirs que vous garderez de cette expérience?Je n’ai joué qu’un rôle mineur pour ce film, mais je me réjouis des bénéfices à long terme pour notre sport. J’ai tout particulièrement essayé de m’assurer que le sport soit présenté avec précision et d’une façon positive. Je pense que le film a atteint cet objectif et sera une belle promotion pour notre sport.

Avez-vous entraîné d’autres célébrités?J’ai donné une instruction au Premier Ministre australien, même si celle-ci n’a duré que 20 minutes. J’ai aussi entraîné quelques per-sonnes pour des films locaux, des émissions TV et des publicités. J’ai également fourni des arcs, des flèches, des cibles, etc., pour des films et des publicités TV. Il y a une émission de télévision qui va commencer dans quelques semaines où nous entraînerons des joueurs de football de diverses équipes qui participeront ensuite à une compétition de tir à l’arc entre eux.

Have you ever trained any other public/famous people?I did instruct the Prime Minister of Australia albeit only for about 20 minutes. I have also trained a few people for some local movies, TV shows and TV commercials. I have also provided bows, arrows, targets butts, etc. for movies and TV commercials. We have a TV show coming up in a few weeks where we will train some football players from various teams who will then have an archery competi-tion against each other.

he Swedish Archery Association had the chance to meet recently with a very special

figure in archery of the last decade - one who truly combines beauty, elegance and archery, Jenjira KERDPRASOP—better known as Mix HAXHOLM. Here is her interview.

Born in Bangkok, Thailand, and raised in Fin-spång, Sweden, Mix HAXHOLM travelled around the world to train and compete (four years) for Thailand. Having won the Miss Thailand title in 2003, her subsequent participation at the Miss

Née à Bangkok en Thaïlande et élevée à Fins-pång en Suède, Mix HAXHOLM a voyagé dans le monde entier pour s’entraîner et concourir du-rant quatre ans avec l’équipe de Thaïlande d’arc classique. Suite à ces nombreuses expériences, Mix com-bine maintenant un programme très chargé de top model avec une vie de famille normale puisqu’elle est mariée avec un joueur de football professionnel suédois. Par ailleurs, son retour à la compétition n’est plus qu’une question de temps.

Mon mentor, Erik KARLSSON, qui est décédé il y a quelques années, m’a entraînée depuis ma toute première flèche, commence Mix. Il me disait souvent de mettre en ordre ma vie et mon tir: «Tu dois être plus organisée.» C’était il y a longtemps, et je pense que ma vie aujourd’hui peut être décrite comme du désordre organisé, raconte-t-elle en pre-nant une gorgée de café.

World competition meant she could not represent her country at the Olympics in Athens the following year. However, it did not stop Mix from starting an archery school in Bangkok and hosting a TV sports programme.

With many experiences behind her, she now combines the hec-tic schedule of a top model with the normal everyday life of being married to a Swedish professional football player. Moreover, the comeback in archery is just around the corner.

My mentor, Erik KARLSSON, who passed away several years ago, trained me since my first arrow. He often told me to get myself and my archery in order, “you have to be more organised.” That was many years back and I think my life today is something better described as organised chaos, she said sipping her coffee.

Mix is now one of two people behind the “Proteinfabrikken Sweden”—a business enterprise active in the field of nutritional supplements. This involves a great deal of work that will have to be taken into consideration when she devises and pursues her overall future in archery.

Please tell us you story from the beginning I was born in Bangkok and raised in Finspång. I think that has given me a healthy balance in life, but it all started 12 years ago. Moving around the world at the age of 16 was very rough. My father was also very strict when I was a young girl. No late nights in the dis-cotheque, but he gave me a lot of support when it came to making and taking opportunities like these.

Pouvez-vous, s’il vous plaît, nous raconter votre histoire depuis le début?Je suis née à Bangkok et ai été élevée à Finspång. Je pense que cela m’a donné un bon équilibre dans ma vie. Mais tout a com-mencé il y a 12 ans. Déménager à l’autre bout du monde à l’âge de 16 ans, ça a été vraiment très dur. Mon père était également très strict quand j’étais plus jeune. Pas de soirées prolongées dans les discothèques. Mais il m’a beaucoup soutenue quand il a fallu saisir des occasions comme celle-là.

Je me vois encore dans la cours d’école en train de penser «ça, c’est ma chance. C’est maintenant ou jamais.» Et je n’ai pas hé-sité une seule seconde. Ainsi, je suis allée m’entraîner et concourir pour l’équipe nationale de Thaïlande. J’ai fait ça pendant quatre ans. Par la suite, je suis devenue la première étrangère à m’entraî-ner avec l’équipe nationale coréenne.

Comment avez-vous eu la possibilité de vous entraîner en Thaïlande et en Corée? Cela a dû être une belle expérience?Mon père et Monsieur PARK Kyung Rae, un célèbre entraîneur qui a fondé la marque de tir à l’arc Win&Win, étaient bons amis et m’ont aidée à m’occuper de ça. Je me souviens avoir rendu visite à M. PARK en Corée. Il avait un petit bureau et parlait de son rêve de fabriquer des arcs. Regardez-le maintenant! Est-ce que ce n’est pas fantastique?


J’ai passé six mois à vivre et à m’entraî-ner avec la meilleure équipe coréenne. Nous vivions dans le centre de Séoul. Certaines des filles étaient championnes du monde et olympiques. C’était comme être joueur de football professionnel ou rock star. Nous avi-ons notre propre chauffeur, des vêtements gratuits, un bon salaire, et nous recevions même un bonus lorsque nous réussissions de bons résultats.

L’entraînement était très dur. Après ma première semaine, j’ai téléphoné à la maison en pleurant. L’une des filles thaïlandaises n’a pas tenu le coup et est rentrée chez elle après trois semaines. Une fois, je me suis retrouvée à l’hôpital car mon corps n’était pas habitué à s’en-traîner à ce niveau.

Maintenant, quand je regarde en arrière, je pense que c’était ma faiblesse quand j’étais jeune: m’entraîner trop dur et ne pas écouter mon corps. On m’a beaucoup critiquée ici en Suède car je m’entraînais beaucoup trop. OK, je tirais 400 flèches chaque jour, six jours par semaine en plus d’un entraînement physique très important. Mais j’avais aussi l’impression que si j’arri-vais à gérer ça, je pouvais gérer n’importe quoi. J’ai beaucoup appris sur moi-même à cette époque-là et je pense que le tir à l’arc m’a fait devenir une femme assez forte qui sait où elle va et ce qu’elle veut.

Les archers suédois doivent s’entraîner plus de nos jours, mais tout est une ques-tion d’équilibre. Il ne suffit pas de copier. La Suède est totalement différente de la Corée. La priorité, c’est le travail ou l’école,

et après vient l’entraînement de tir à l’arc. Les stars coréennes mangent et respirent le tir à l’arc. C’est tout ce qu’elles font. L’en-traînement en Corée est basé sur la manière coréenne de faire les choses. Nous pouvons copier leurs fondamentaux qui sont ex-cellents et les utiliser comme fondements sur lesquels bâtir notre propre façon de faire.

J’ai une philosophie: «Tu ne peux pas être numéro un tant que tu empruntes chez quelqu’un d’autre.» Il faut se construire quelque chose par soi-même. Il faut rester intègre.

Après ma première année en tant que Miss Thaïlande, j’ai beaucoup travaillé comme mannequin. Mais au lieu de faire la fête après le travail, j’ai créé une école de tir à l’arc à Bangkok pour m’aider à garder un équilibre entre la célébrité et la vie normale. Le mannequinat, ce n’est pas juste une question d’argent et de prestige. C’est également la drogue, et c’est facile de se laisser entraîner dans ce milieu-là. Alors en 2006, j’ai estimé qu’il était temps de déménager et je suis retournée en Suède. Je me suis mariée et maintenant je travaille en Thaïlande durant de courtes périodes et je retourne ensuite à ma vie normale.

I recall standing in the schoolyard thinking, “This is my chance. It’s now or never,” and I didn’t hesitate for one second, so I went to train and compete for the national team of Thailand. I did that for four years. Thereafter I became the first foreigner to train with the national team of Korea.

How did you get the opportunity to train in Thailand and Korea? That must have been some experience? My father and Mr PARK Kyung Rae, a famous coach who went on to establish the archery brand Win&Win, were close friends and helped me to deal with that. I remember visiting Mr PARK in Korea. He had a small office and talked about his dream of building bows. Look at him now! Isn’t that fantastic!

I spent six months living and training with the best Korean team. We lived in the middle of Seoul. Some of the girls were Olympic and World champions. It was like being a professional football play-er or a rock star. We had our own driver, free clothes, a good salary and were even awarded a bonus when high scores were achieved.


J’ai aussi commencé à chanter et j’ai mis les pieds dans l’in-dustrie de la musique. J’ai enregistré en studio en 2007 et j’espère que ma musique sortira bientôt.

Parlons maintenant de votre retour à la compétition. Comment vous sentez-vous?Physiquement, je ne suis pas au sommet de ma forme, mais je suis plus forte mentalement. J’ai participé à quelques compéti-tions en arc classique l’année dernière et j’ai réussi 1247 points à l’Epreuve FITA. Mais j’ai appris tellement de choses sur l’entraîne-ment et le tir que j’ai juste besoin de temps pour m’entraîner. Mon nouveau travail me prend également beaucoup de temps actuel-lement. Tout doit donc être bien en place avant que je puisse me concentrer complètement sur mon retour à la compétition.

Et vos rêves?Mon rêve? Mon rêve quand j’étais petite, c’était de participer aux Jeux Olympiques comme patineuse artistique. C’est le sport que j’ai pratiqué en premier, mais j’étais déjà trop vieille à 15 ans, et c’est à ce moment-là que le tir à l’arc a pris le dessus. Mon rêve de par-ticiper aux Jeux est toujours bien présent et peut-être qu’un jour...

Son téléphone sonne, elle répond, et c’est le moment de termi-ner l’interview. Mix part en courant à travers la rue vers une réu-nion importante, comme toute jeune femme avec des rêves intacts.

Normalement on mettait pas de guillemets dans les interviews ! En tout cas il y en a pas dans celle de Larven. J’ai pas signalé chaque fois mais il faudrait uniformiser.

The training was really tough. After my first week I phoned home crying. One girl from Thailand couldn’t cope and returned home after three weeks. One time I found myself in hospital as my body wasn’t used to training at this level.

Now, when I look back, I believe this was my weakness when I was younger. Training too hard and not listening to my body. I got a lot of criticism here in Sweden for training too much. Okay, I was shooting 400 arrows every day, six days a week with hard physical training, but I also felt that if I could cope with this, I could cope with anything. I learned a lot about myself during that time and I think archery has formed me into a fairly strong woman who knows where she is going and what she wants.

Swedish archers have to train more nowadays, but it’s all about balance. You can’t just copy. Sweden is totally different from Korea. First there’s work and school and then there’s archery training. The stars in Korea eat and breathe archery. It’s all they do. The training in Korea has its starting point in how things are done in Korea. We can copy their basics which are great and use them as foundations upon which we can build upon ourselves.

I have a philosophy: “You can’t be number one as long as you take from somebody else.” You have to build something of your own. You must have integrity.

After my first year as Miss Thailand, I worked very much as a model. But instead of partying after work, I started an archery school in Bangkok as a way of balancing the glamour with a nor-mal life. Modelling isn’t just about good money and a glamorous life. It’s also about drugs and it’s easy to get “dragged into” that world. So in 2006, I felt it was time to move out and return home to Sweden. I got married and now I can work for short periods of time in Thailand and then return to my normal life.

I also started to sing and entered the music business. I went into the recording studio in 2007 and will hopefully have my music released soon.

Let’s talk about your comeback. How is your form?Physically I am a bit off, but today I am much stronger mentally. I took part in a few competitions last year and I shot 1247 but I have learnt so many things about training and shooting that I just need time for training. My new job is also taking up a lot of time right now so that needs to settle down before I can fully concentrate on my comeback.

And your dreams?My dream? My dream when I was very young was to participate in the Olympic Games as a figure skater. That was what I did at first, but I was already too old at the age of 15 and that was when archery took over. My dream of participating in the Olympics is still very much alive and one day….

Her phone rings, she answers, and it’s time to end this interview. Mix scurries across the street making her way to some important meeting, like a young girl with all her dreams intact.


he World Archery Plan Steering Group met on 9 June 2010, during the Antalya stage

of the Archery World Cup. Some of the results of the World Archery plan were clearly visible at this World Cup, including the integration of the new World Archery brand, as well as the changes to the compound competition. These visible results provided much inspiration to the Steering Group as they reflected on the accom-plishments of the Plan over the last three years.

The focus of the Steering Group meeting was to ensure that things were moving forward with the new Targets of Promotion and Partnership. However, it was also a chance to reflect on the accomplish-ments of the Identity and Events Targets and to take stalk on whether the plan was “on target” to reach its overall vision. Is Archery making a breakthrough?

Le Groupe de Pilotage du Plan Mondial de Tir à l’Arc s’est réuni le 9 juin 2010 à l’occasion de l’étape de Coupe du Monde d’Antalya en Tur-quie. Certains des résultats du Plan Mondial de Tir à l’Arc étaient d’ailleurs clairement visibles à cette Coupe du Monde, y compris l’intégration de la nouvelle marque «World Archery», ainsi que les changements dans la compétition en arc à poulies. Ces résultats visibles ont ainsi inspiré le Groupe de Pilotage lors de leur ré-flexion sur ce que le Plan a déjà accompli au cours de ces trois dernières années.

L’attention du Groupe de Pilotage s’est portée sur les nouvelles Cibles Promotion et Partenariat afin de s’assurer que les choses avancent dans ces groupes. Mais c’était aussi une opportunité de se pencher sur ce que les Cibles Identité et Evéne-

ments ont déjà accompli et de voir si le plan est «dans le mille» pour atteindre sa vision d’ensemble. Le tir à l’arc fait-il une percée si-gnificative?

En ce qui concerne l’identité, tout le monde était d’accord de dire qu’il y a encore du travail à faire en termes d’intégration de la nouvelle marque dans toute la communauté du Tir à l’Arc Mondial, y com-pris son intégration totale dans l’administration et l’intégration au sein des Associations Membres et Continentales.

In the case of identity, it was agreed that there was still some work to be done in terms of integrating the new brand across all of World Archery—including its full integration in the administration and the integration across Continental and Member Associations.

As the new compound competition was still being tested in the fields of the World Cup, it was clear to the Steering Group that more had to be done to ensure that the differentiation of compound and recurve was fully completed with the purpose of developing both disciplines in the future.

As work still continues in making sure that the Targets of Identity and Events are fully reached, focus has also continued on the new targets. Here focus shifts to strengthening the external promotion of the World Archery brand to the public, media and partners. The core philosophy of Target 2009/2010: Promotion and Target 2010/2011: Partnerships is to integrate a mentality of promotion into everything that happens in World Archery. Working groups have been focus-ing on Target 2009/10 since April of this year and the new working groups for Target 2010/11 will start over the summer.

The output and ideas from these groups will be consolidated into concrete recommendations for FITA Council that will be pre-sented in November 2010.

With only two years of the plan left, it is essential that the Steer-ing Group stays focused on reaching its vision, so that by 2012 Archery is truly recognised as a strong Olympic sport.
