This January, Milwaukee Catholic Home was excited to introduce our new logo and tagline. In this issue of Focus, we’d like to tell you a little bit about what these new words and images mean to us.

If you look around at faith-based

senior living communities nation-

wide, you’ll observe an interesting

trend: many communities are

dropping the religious overtones

from their names and imagery.

Sometimes this happens intention-

ally, at the advice of consultants;

for others, this identity just gets

lost in the shuffle as attention is

focused on other priorities.

We believe, however, that if we

traded in the name Milwaukee

Catholic Home for Prospect Avenue

Retirement Community, something

crucial to who we are would be lost.

We are proud of our history and

of the traditions we embrace as a

Catholic organization.

In this issue of Focus, you’ll learn

about Samuel Cardinal Stritch, who

was deeply supportive of the efforts

of lay men and women to be leaders

in service, and took a special

interest in the work of the Catholic

lay women who founded Milwaukee

Catholic Home a century ago.

Today, we honor the example they set

for us and re-affirm the importance

of who we are as a Catholic

organization dedicated to service.

The apostle Paul, in his first letter to

the Corinthians, beautifully describes

the new Church using the analogy

of the body and its parts, none

less important than the other. At

Milwaukee Catholic Home, we strive

to reflect both the diversity and unity

of Christ’s body in our community.

Our new logo, introduced for

the first time with this issue, is a

meaningful expression of these

important aspects of our identity:

our connection to the Catholic

Church, our deep and historic roots

in the Milwaukee community, and

our commitment to uniting our

differences towards the common

goal of serving and honoring our

cherished older adults. Thank you for

your part in building an organization

that creates experiences, fosters

community, and honors the spirit

through compassion and service.

100 Years, 100 Lives: Cardinal Stritch

Two decades after the founding of Milwaukee Catholic Home, a new archbishop was appointed to the archdiocese of Milwaukee. Samuel Stritch became a warm friend and supporter of Milwaukee Catholic Home and its mission.

Stritch was born in Nashville to Irish immigrant parents in 1887. An intellectual prodigy, Stritch graduated from college at the age of 16 and went on to study for the priesthood in Rome. He was below the age requirement for ordination, but was granted a dispensation by Pope Pius X, who said “Stritch is young in years but old in intelligence. Let him be ordained.”

Stritch was appointed bishop of Toledo in 1921,

becoming the youngest bishop in the country. Then in 1930, he succeeded Archbishop Messmer as the fifth archbishop of the archdiocese of Milwaukee.

As archbishop, Stritch showed deep pastoral concern for the people of his archdiocese, focusing his efforts on aid to those suffering from economic hardship during the Great Depression.

Stritch was especially supportive of charitable efforts by lay people. He was very interested in the new Catholic Home, staying in frequent correspondence with Anna Marie Hackett about the organization’s activities and supporting its fundraising efforts.

A letter to Mrs. Hackett

from 1934 reads like a thoughtful conversation. “I really like the idea of having this institution under the direction of lay women,” Stritch wrote. “It would be very helpful if in a greater degree our lay women and laymen helped us in the administration of catholic charities.”

When Mrs. Hackett passed away in May 1939, Archbishop Stritch was elected president of the Milwaukee Catholic Home Board. His time in this role was brief, however; in 1939 he was appointed archbishop of Chicago. He was eventually made a cardinal in 1946.

In 1958, the last year of his life, Stritch returned to Rome as the first American to head a department of the Roman Curia, appointed to a position overseeing the Church’s missionary efforts. ■

Milwaukee Catholic Home to celebrate centennial with a day of festivities

If you know Milwaukee Catholic Home, you know we love a party. And why have just one party when you can have several? We will be finding lots of ways to celebrate our centennial over the coming years, and are planning a very

special day of celebration on June 28, 2013, the 100th anniversary of the signing of the organization’s Articles of Incorporation.

The daytime festivities will be held in the newly remodeled courtyard of the Health and Rehabilitation Center. Milwaukee Catholic Home’s Recreation Therapy team will be working together with Cheryl

Experience

“Flourish Fest” unites East Side organizations to celebrate aging and the arts

In the summer of 2012, Milwaukee Catholic Home was excited to become one of the founding partners of the Creative Trust, a neighborhood alliance dedicated to fostering life-long learning in the arts. This alliance includes long term care communities, the UWM Peck School of the Arts, and area arts and culture institutions.

One of the most exciting collaborative efforts undertaken so far by the Creative Trust is “Flourish Fest,” a week-long celebration of creativity and aging. This festival is planned for the week of May 6-12 and will showcase intergenerational creative efforts across a range of arts disciplines.

One of the festival events hosted by Milwaukee Catholic home will be an art exhibit and reception featuring participants in Memories in the Making, an art therapy initiative sponsored by the Alzheimer’s Association. All are invited to stop by Milwaukee Catholic Home on Thursday, May 9th between 4:30 and 7:00 pm to view participants’ art and to enjoy refreshments.

“The fashion show

and program will

include fascinating

stories of the people and

events that shaped the

history of Milwaukee

Catholic Home.”

For more information about the Creative Trust, please visit its blog site at http://creativetrustmke.wordpress.com. MCH is excited to be part of this initiative and to see what can be done together to enrich the lives of older adults and their communities through the arts. ■

Spirit

Community retreat will focus on “Telling Our Stories”

Last year, the Milwaukee Catholic Home community had the unique opportunity to come together in faith for a three-day retreat, led by Augustinian priest Fr. Jim Friedel. Those who participated were inspired and spiritually refreshed, impressed by Fr. Jim’s ability to make Scripture come alive through his talks and discussions.

Fr. Jim is returning to lead another retreat this year, and family and friends of Milwaukee Catholic Home are encouraged to attend. The topic is “Telling Our Stories.” Using Scripture passages, Fr. Friedel will lead participants into deeper reflection on the stories of our faith, seeking signs of God’s never-ending love present in these stories and in our own lives. Each retreat day will have a different focus. The schedule of events is listed below:

Sunday, May 5th“Stories of Prayer”Opening Mass: 10:30AM, St. Anne ChapelRetreat Talk: 2:00PM, St. Anne Chapel

Monday, May 6th“Stories of God’s Forgiveness”Communion Service: 9:30AM, St. Joachim ChapelRetreat Talk: 2:00PM, St. Anne ChapelMass: 4:00PM, St. Anne Chapel

Tuesday, May 7th“Stories of the Eucharist”Reconciliation Service: 10:00AM, St. Anne ChapelClosing Mass: 4:00PM, St. Anne Chapel

There is no charge for the retreat and all are welcome. Feel free to come to just one of the retreat events - or to all of them! We hope you will join the Milwaukee Catholic Home community as we pray, reflect and grow in our relationships with God and with each other. Axelrod, creator of Goodwill Industries’ “Fashion Through the Decades” program, to create a collaborative “walk through time” incorporating fashion and MCH history. This fashion show and program will feature clothing from the last 100 years, including many items of vintage clothing donated by MCH residents, and will include fascinating stories of the people and events that shaped the history of Milwaukee Catholic Home. This event will be perfect for all ages.

In the evening, MCH will host a gala reception and dinner in celebration of its centennial. The evening will include live music on the patio, a raffle, and plenty of opportunity for fun and fellowship. We hope you will join us for this very special opportunity to celebrate Milwaukee Catholic Home’s 100-year-old mission and our unique and lasting impact on the Milwaukee community.

For more information on either event, please contact Director of Community Outreach Anne Catalane at (414) 220-3250. ■
