It takes in a section of the locally renowned Hurtwood forestry area. Four stiles, all easy to climb. Walking boots recommended. Not suitable for buggies. The Venue: After an unsuccessful spell as a gastro pub The Volunteer is now under friendly new management and positively welcomes walkers and their dogs. Beers include Fursty Ferret, Tangle Foot and Badger Best Bitter. Food is served all-around and Sunday roasts costing around £15 are available between 12.00pm and 4.00pm. Booking advised. Pub is on left after about 100 yards. - From Guildford Head east on A25 towards Dorking. At Abinger Hammer turn right along B2126 signposted Holmbury St Mary. After 1.4 miles turn left into Raikes Lane. Pub is on left after about 100 yards. Public Transport: Best to travel to Dorking by bus or train and then take a cab for the 7 mile journey to the pub. Stage 1 (No answers on underlined section) From pub walk back to side road where you came in. Turn immediately right to T junction visible ahead. Here right along main road. After about 50 yards turn left up “Public Footpath” between fences. At roadway left for a few yards then right along “Public Footpath”. End stage on reaching road at right angles.

Q2 Planet and stars to spy. Say where as you walk by. Q4 Where you intake A piece of cake. Q5 Once a place to incarcerate. Now returned to its pristine state.

Stage 2 Turn left up road. Stay on right-hand side until reaching “Public Footpath” pointer on right just beyond side road on right. Along footpath. When it ends keep ahead along roadway in front. After passing “The Folly” on left continue down track. After going through wooden gate and descending broad wooden steps follow narrow path until wire fences on either side end. Q3 House seen in a tree. Write down its name for me.

Stage 3

On up steep slope to stile visible ahead. Over stile and head diagonally right across field towards house. Soon climb stile just to left of house and follow path ahead, soon passing “Timbers Ridge” on right. Continue to roadway at right angles. Left. Very soon go right at side road for a few yards to “Public Footpath” sign on right. Follow footpath until it opens up into grassy field. Keep ahead along right-hand side past playground. End stage at “Clean it up” sign at corner of field. Q4 When the playground comes into view There are tyres half-buried – what do they do?

Q9 Set up to stand its ground And not be pushed around. Q10 Set-piece to be found In the shape of a hound? Q11 What Mrs Whitehouse used to say When watching TV every day?

Stage 4

Descend steps in front to roadway ahead. Left along “Mackies Hill”. When road bends right go straight ahead into “The Hurtwood” up “Public Bridleway”. Stay on main track until reaching staggered X tracks with “Millennium Trail” disc on post on left. Q5 Killed by a jolt From a lightning bolt? Q12 It’s a knockout! Q13 Dramatic descent to spy Bringing death from the sky. Q14 Said to horse. “Stop”, of course.

Stage 5

Left up path following “Millennium Trail”. Soon at fork keep ahead on main track. When green mesh fence appears over to left stay on uphill track for some distance. When fence on left ends walk forward to wooden post with multiple disc pointers on its sides. Left and follow main track round to right. Soon at X tracks keep straight ahead and stay on undulating track ignoring turn-offs. Eventually end stage just before pond at wooden post on right with disc pointers. Q6 On the MT disc four pictures to see.

Draw just one of them for me. Q15 Carved many years before, This one during the war. Q16 When everything else is stripped away Is only Henry said to stay?

Stage 6

Ahead past pond on left then immediately veer left with main track and follow it uphill and round to right. Soon at junction of tracks keep straight on passing beside exposed tree roots on left. Continue to barrier on left at car park. Q7 Usually they grow underground, But here above the surface found. Q17 Just now shot And quickly got. Q18 Clearly prone and of little worth.

Has a high roller come down to earth?

Stage 7 Pass to left of barrier then head diagonally right across car park. On reaching “Public Byway” pointer just past “YHA” notice descend roadway in front keeping to right-hand side. Eventually end stage at main road with the four pointer signpost there to your right. Q8 Here’s a square that’s split into two. Half is white - what’s the other hue? Q19 Particle bit From atom that split. Q20 Access that begs For use of legs? Q21 Has two men’s backing But worth is lacking. Stage 8

Cross straight over main road and head along “Public Footpath” beside “The Cottage”. Very soon climb stile and walk beside chicken coop on right. Now keep ahead through gap in tree-line, then immediately head diagonally left to stile visible in front. Over stile and follow path to roadway. Left, staying on right-hand side. At fork keep round to right. End stage at T junction with pub opposite. Q9 This is a “deliveries” store. Which houses is it for? Q23 Stan’s the man For the presidents’ clan.
