Remembering our founder, Mr. A

As many of you may recall, October 25 will mark the five-year anniversary of the passing ofGeorge Adams Sr., Electric Supply’s founder. Regardless of whether you referred to him asGeorge, Mr. Adams, Mr. A, Grandpa, Pops or Dad, those of you who knew him can recall hisfriendly mannerism, endless energy and high integrity. When he asked you a question, you couldbe fairly certain he knew the answer - so bluffing wasn’t a good idea. And if Mr. A relied on yournumbers, you had to be accurate within 1/10th of 1¢!

In 1969, Mr. A was 52 years old, he submitted his resignation to Fife Electric due to an ethicalissue. Over the next six months, he created a business plan and used every asset he owned ascollateral for numerous loans that would fund his startup, Electric Supply of Tampa, Inc. If thestart up failed, Mr. A and his wife Pauline would lose everything they owned.

Along with his faith and family, Electric Supply became one of Mr. A’s passions as he seemed tolove working 12 to 18 hours per workweek day plus almost every Saturday and Sunday (afterchurch). As he grew into his mid 70s and then into his 80s, the hours were scaled back, but notby much, as he was frequently the last person to leave the building. After all, Electric Supply washis baby.

Mr. A strived for Electric Supply “to be all things to a few people” and he cared deeply for ourteam. He was especially fond of closing team member meetings with “I love you and pray for youevery day.”

Five years after he left us, Mr. A is still an inspiration for many of us. And yes, many of us miss

him very much, every day.

To get to the next level and continue to increase Electric Supply's stock value will require an extra something. As MarshallGoldsmith stated in a business best seller, "What got you here won’t get you there." As a team, what got Electric Supply to ourpresent level of success won't get us to the next level of success unless our competition folds. And the last time I checked, ourcompetition was stronger than ever.

Even if we continue to reach higher levels, it is critical that we ascend at a rate faster than our competition; otherwise, we willeventually find ourselves at a competitive disadvantage.

As we are slightly larger than a typical mid-sized distributor, this puts us in a precarious position. Two common growth hazards thatplague many mid-sized companies are becoming too large to provide the personal services of a small business while remaining toosmall to enjoy the economies of scale that large companies enjoy. Some of you probably grow tired of reading or hearing this concernbut all of us must remain keenly aware that each level of growth presents new challenges and if ignored, many of these challenges arecapable of delivering a knockout blow to any organization. As we all know, being a business owner is not for the faint of heart!

This is why we must discipline ourselves to maintain many of the positive attributes that have served us well that are most commonlyfound in smaller companies while embracing some of the adoptable positive attributes most frequently found in larger companies.Put another way, we must remain nimble and very responsive to customer needs while staying abreast of emerging trends and globaleconomic conditions that even though are seemingly a world away, might eventually have a huge impact on our business.Accomplishing this feat is akin to walking a life-long tight rope!

In spite of the challenges, I know that my future is in good hands. Aside from our established veterans who carry much of today'sresponsibilities, we have an emerging group of unsung heroes with tremendous potential.

At the risk of slighting numerous worthy team members who could easily be mentioned, the following individuals came to mind forquietly assuming greater responsibility within Electric Supply. Derrick Alexander's positive attitude and easy smile will serve himwell as he continues to grow his sales capabilities. Bruce Weeks, Sales Counter/Will Call Manager and Mike Cronin, recentlypromoted to Service Manager hung tough in some of the most physical, difficult-to-master and thankless positions at Electric Supply.Mark Owens has settled into a new position in quotations. All of these team members brought a pleasant demeanor, strong workethic to Electric Supply and quickly learned our systems. My projection is within 10 years, each will serve as a mentor to futuregenerations of team members.

It is because of our team, what you have accomplished, the reputation you have established and your capabilities to continue to growthat fuels my optimism.

Let’s go back to my challenge: What will you do to increase the value of your Electric Supply stock? This challenge should speak toall of us; especially those who might stick around for a career. Unless you have a 401k, IRA or other investment, your ESOP alongwith Social Security will probably be your primary sources of income in your retirement.

If you accept my challenge, deciding what you will do to contribute to increasing our stock’s value should evoke nothing less thanyour best critical thinking skills plus much open and honest collaboration. Please share your best ideas with me and your co-workersbecause great ideas should be contagious as we are in this together.

In fact, all of us should be prepared to ask each other to explain how we plan to impact our value. One word of warning: This cannotbe a onetime exercise. It will need to be nothing less than an annual exercise that continues long after my exit from Electric Supply;especially if you plan to rely on the ESOP to fund or help fund your retirement.

I look forward to hearing what you have in mind to contribute to increasing the value of our ESOP stock. Best case, when it is timefor you to start cashing out of the ESOP, your return will exceed your highest expectations. If we can really be effective, maybe wecan substitute “wildest” for “highest”.

But before you pin your hopes on an ESOP payback, we have much difficult work to accomplish. Yes, it will be difficult work butthe good news is you have an opportunity to invest or bet on yourself and your team which should be an excellent bet.

After all, you are the best!

We are looking into a variety ofways to ensure that all team members have access to vital information like training opportunities, open positions, and safety information.

ESI will be partnering with USF to bring a graduate intern on to our team to complete a variety ofprojects. The intern will focus on researching opportunities of growth for the company andreviewing our current processes to measure productivity.

Please contact any member of the People Team with all questions or concerns: Christy Watts,

Matt Coffey, Rick Atkinson, Melanie Brock, Carlos Gomez, and Mike Cronin.

Flu Shots Scheduled for October 13th

As the leaves start to fall and the weather turns cooler, our thoughts shift to fall football, apple cider and influenza. Yes,flu season is upon us again. Starting in early October and lasting through the spring, flu season typically peaks inJanuary or February. However, it is never too early to begin planning our flu prevention strategy.

CDC (Centers for Disease Control) recommends a yearly flu vaccine for everyone 6 months of age and older as thefirst and most important step in protecting against this serious disease. While there are many different flu viruses, theflu vaccine is designed to protect against the three main flu strains that research indicates will cause the most illnessduring the flu season. Getting the flu vaccine as soon as it becomes available each year is always a good idea, and theprotection you get from vaccination will last throughout the flu season.

Electric Supply has contracted with Walgreen’s to provide on-site flu shots this yearon October 13th starting at 9am in the training room. Flu shots are paid at 100% byFloridaBlue for those team members on our medical plan and will be provided at NOCOST to our team members not covered by FloridaBlue. Thank you, ElectricSupply! More information and a sign-up sheet will be provided prior to the 13th.

Meet the International and Utility Teams

Welcome to our new neighbors, our Utility and International teams! While they’ve only been a few miles away until recently, you may have noticed some new or strange faces wandering the halls and warehouse lately. Let us take this opportunity tointroduce you to your fellow team members via an interview where we received some interesting and fun information:

Star Wars or Star Trek we asked….seems like an easy answer. The vote ended up Star Trek = 3; Star Wars = 1; Starbucks = 1(nice, Narkaly) and “Who really cares” = 6. Next question please.

If our Utility and International teams won $20 million in the lottery, the majority of them would take off on an adventurearound the world. Traveling came in #1 by a landslide as to what they would do with the money. Some would donate aportion and/or invest in real estate. Only Pat Mullis said she’d be sure to show up every day to work if she won. Right, Pat.

If our utility and international teams were stranded on a deserted island and only had the contents of their home refrigerator, this group would definitely not go thirsty. Plenty of water, beer and wine for all! Surprisingly there weren’t many food itemsbesides condiments. A little mustard with that beer perhaps? Ralph would have some healthy tuna and vegetables butprobably not enough to share. Alex wins the MacGyver award for deciding to actually break down the refrigerator itself andmake tools out of its parts.

As for super-powers, our team is quite imaginative. If given one superpower, Ray, Tiffiny, and Jack chose to be invisible;Ralph and Brian chose the ability to see the future; Rick and Norm chose the ability to fly; Pat wants superior intellect; Alexchose immortality, Lisa to be forever young and Narkaly to be able to twitch her nose like Samantha from Bewitched andhave her house clean and dinner on the table.

Our International and Utility teams have average tenure of 13 years so are good team mates to provide advice. Were they togive advice to recent hires at ESI, they would tell them to be flexible, adaptable, and open-minded; be honest, keep a positiveattitude and talk to other team members; and continue learning as much as possible and even finish some higher education.Tiffiny Torres, recent hire in Utilities, said it wonderfully… “This place is for real. I thought it was just rumors, but thiscompany really is like a family!”

Utility Team L-R: Jack Griffin, Rick Atkinson,Pat Mullis, Tiffiny Torres, Brian Gafford, Ray Moham-med, Norman Pananganan (front); Outside sales (notpictured): Tom Ellis, Kevin Gentner, Steve Nau, MarkRowe and Matt Smith

20 Quick Tips for Better Time Management

Are you usually punctual or late? Do you finish things within the time you stipulate? Do you hand in your reports/work on time? Areyou able to accomplish what you want to do before deadlines? Are you a good time manager? If your answer is “no” to any of the questions above, that means you’re not managing your time as well as you want. Here are 20 tipson how to be a better time manager:

1. Create a daily plan. Plan your day before it unfolds. Do it in the morning or even better, the night before you sleep. The plan givesyou a good overview of how the day will pan out. That way, you don’t get caught off guard. Your job for the day is to stick to theplan as best as possible.

2. Peg a time limit to each task. Be clear that you need to finish X task by 10am, Y task by 3pm, and Z item by 5:30pm. This pre-vents your work from dragging on and eating into time reserved for other activities.

3. Use a calendar. Having a calendar is the most fundamental step to managing your daily activities. If you use outlook or lotusnotes, calendar come as part of your mailing software.

4. Use an organizer. The organizer helps you to be on top of everything in your life. It’s your central tool to organize information, to-do lists, projects, and other miscellaneous items.

5. Know your deadlines. When do you need to finish your tasks? Mark the deadlines out clearly in your calendar and organizer soyou know when you need to finish them.

6. Learn to say “No”. Don’t take on more than you can handle. For the distractions that come in when you’re doing other things, givea firm no. Or defer it to a later period.

7. Target to be early. When you target to be on time, you’ll either be on time or late. Most of the times you’ll be late. However, ifyou target to be early, you’ll most likely be on time. For appointments, strive to be early. For your deadlines, submit them earlierthan required.

8. Time box your activities. This means restricting your work to X amount of time.9. Have a clock visibly placed before you. Sometimes we are so engrossed in our work that we lose track of time. Having a huge

clock in front of you will keep you aware of the time at the moment.10. Set reminders 15 minutes before. Most calendars have a reminder function. If you’ve an important meeting to attend, set that

alarm 15 minutes before.11. Focus. Are you multi-tasking so much that you’re just not getting anything done? If so, focus on just one key task at one time.

Close off all the applications you aren’t using. Close off the tabs in your browser that are taking away your attention. Focus solelyon what you’re doing. You’ll be more efficient that way.

12. Block out distractions. What’s distracting you in your work? Instant messages? Phone ringing? Text messages popping in? I hard-ly ever use chat nowadays. The only times when I log on is when I’m not intending to do any work. Otherwise it gets very dis-tracting. When I’m doing important work, I also switch off my phone. Calls during this time are recorded and I contact them after-ward if it’s something important. This helps me concentrate better.

13. Track your time spent. Egg Timer is a simple online countdown timer. You key in the amount of time you want it to track(example: “30 minutes”, “1 hour”) and it’ll count down in the background. When the time is up, the timer will beep. Great way tobe aware of your time spent.

14. Don’t fuss about unimportant details you will never get everything done in exactly the way you want. Trying to do so is beingineffective.

15. Prioritize. Since you can’t do everything, learn to prioritize the important and let go of the rest. Apply the 80/20 principle which isa key principle in prioritization.

16. Delegate. If there are things that can be better done by others or things that are not so important, consider delegating. This takes aload off and you can focus on the important tasks.

17. Batch similar tasks together. For related work, batch them together. For example, my work can be categorized into these coregroups: (1) writing (articles, my upcoming book) (2) coaching (3) workshop development (4) business development (5) adminis-trative. I batch all the related tasks together so there’s synergy. If I need to make calls, I allocate a time slot to make all my calls. Itreally streamlines the process.

18. Eliminate your time wasters. What takes your time away your work? Facebook? Twitter? Email checking? Stop checking them sooften. One thing you can do is make it hard to check them – remove them from your browser quick links / bookmarks and stuffthem in a hard to access bookmarks folder. Replace your browser bookmarks with important work-related sites. While you’ll stillcheck FB/Twitter no doubt, you’ll find it’s a lower frequency than before.

19. Cut off when you need to. #1 reason why things overrun is because you don’t cut off when you have to. Don’t be afraid to inter-cept in meetings or draw a line to cut-off. Otherwise, there’s never going to be an end and you’ll just eat into the time for later.

20. Leave buffer time in-between. Don’t pack everything closely together. Leave a 5-10 minute buffer time in between each tasks. This helps you wrap up the previous task and start off on the next one.

Halloween Safety TipsWalk Safely Cross the street at corners, using traffic signals and crosswalks. Look left, right and left again when crossing and keep looking as you cross. Put electronic devices down and keep heads up and walk, don’t run, across the street. Teach children to make eye contact with drivers before crossing in front of them. Always walk on sidewalks or paths. If there are no sidewalks, walk facing traffic as far to the left as

possible. Children should walk on direct routes with the fewest street crossings. Watch for cars that are turning or backing up. Teach children to never dart out into the street or cross

between parked cars.

Trick or Treat With an AdultChildren under the age of 12 should not be alone at night without adult supervision. If kids are mature enoughto be out without supervision, they should stick to familiar areas that are well lit and trick-or-treat in groups.

Keep Costumes Both Creative and Safe Decorate costumes and bags with reflective tape or stickers and, if possible, choose light colors. Choose face paint and makeup whenever possible instead of masks, which can obstruct a child’s vision. Have kids carry glow sticks or flashlights to help them see and be seen by drivers. When selecting a costume, make sure it is the right size to prevent trips and falls.

Drive Extra Safely on Halloween Slow down and be especially alert in residential neighborhoods. Children are excited on Halloween and

may move in unpredictable ways. Take extra time to look for kids at intersections, on medians and on curbs. Enter and exit driveways and alleys slowly and carefully. Eliminate any distractions inside your car so you can concentrate on the road and your surroundings. Drive slowly, anticipate heavy pedestrian traffic and turn your headlights on earlier in the day to spot

children from greater distances. Popular trick-or-treating hours are 5:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. so be especially alert for kids during those hours.
