AC MODULE: WHAT IT IS / IS NOT

NEC defines AC Modules in two places:

• Article 690.2: an AC Modules is a “complete, environmentally protected unit consisting of solar cells, optics inverter and other components, exclusive of tracker, designed to generate AC power when exposed to sunlight”

• Article 690.6: defines the electrical output of an AC module and their specific installation requirements

• An AC Module is tested and certified by an NRTL (UL, CSA, etc) as a complete assembly; the inverter is factory-integrated with the module; and the entire unit carries one end-to-end warranty from the module manufacturer

• Standalone microinverters are tested separately, installed separately, and warranted separately from the PV module

AC MODULES VS STANDALONE MICROINVERTERS

AC Modules must meet stringent UL-1703 standards:

• Integrated module must pass resistance tests before and after TC-200

• Integrated module must pass resistance tests before and after HF-10

Integrated inverters are developed jointly with PV module vendors
