Notes ON THE PROGRAMby Randol Bass

This composition was written for theNew York Pops Orchestra in 1990 andhas subsequently been extensively pro-grammed by professional and non-professional musical ensembles in a

variety of performance venues and con-cert situations. It is a rhythmic, yet lyri-cal, setting of the liturgical Latin textand has been used with much successon both sacred and secular programs.

RANDOL BASS (b.1953) Gloria(approx. 7 minutes)

This arrangement was written for theDallas Symphony Orchestra in 1985and has been extensively programmedon holiday programs throughout theUnited States and in Europe. The fol-lowing six carols appear, without inter-

ruption, in this manner: GloucesterWassail, Il est née, le divin enfant, OCome, O Come Emmanuel, The Hollyand the Ivy, God Rest Ye, MerryGentlemen, and We Wish You a MerryChristmas.

RANDOL BASS A Feast of Carols(approx. 17 minutes)

This setting of the famous Christmaspoem A Visit from St. Nicholas (attrib-uted to Clement Clarke Moore but, inactuality, probably written by anEnglishman, Major Henry Livingston,Jr.) was commissioned by the ClevelandOrchestra. The first performance of thework took place in that city during theOrchestra’s Holiday concerts in 1988,under the baton of Robert Page. The

piece is cinematically conceived, andeach poetic image of the narration isimaginatively colored in such a waythat audiences can clearly visualize thehappenings from passage to passage. Some rehearsal is required to properlyalign a live performance with the narra-tion, in such a way that the orchestralframing is synchronized moment-by-moment with the text of the poem.

RANDOL BASS The Night Before Christmas (approx. 7 minutes)

This arrangement was created for usein the 1999 Dallas SymphonyChristmas Pops concerts. It consists of4 well-known secular Christmas songs, designed to be performed without

pause. After a brief orchestra introduc-tion, the carols appear as follows:Santa Claus Is Comin’ to Town,Rudolph, the Red-Nosed Reindeer,Frosty the Snowman, and Jingle Bells.

RANDOL BASS Seasonal Sounds(approx. 9 minutes)

The term “carol” is derived from theFrench word carole, which means “acircle dance accompanied by singers.”This perfectly captures the essence ofthese festive songs we traditionallysing to celebrate the Advent andChristmas seasons.

Originating from village festivals, wed-dings, and birthday celebrations, SaintFrancis of Assisi is credited with usher-ing carols into the more formal churchworship setting. Carols also became anintegral part of the medieval mysteryplays. As the carol continued to evolve,it actually mirrored the history of theChristian church itself, moving from alargely Latin text to the use of nativelanguages after the ProtestantReformation. This allowed the com-mon people the world over to embracecarols as part of their seasonal obser-vances. And surely this is the heartbeatof the carol today – the experience ofcaroling, as joyous groups of neigh-bors, family, and even strangers jointogether to sing with the angels, “Gloryto the newborn King!” “I grew up play-ing Christmas carols around the pianowith my family and accompanying car-ols in church services,” writes MarkHayes, arranger and orchestrator ofInternational Carol Suites. “What a joyit was to discover new carols and seehow cultures around the world cele-brate the season with their own uniqueperspective on this timeless story.”

International Carol Suites is an exuber-ant, diverse choral celebration thatweaves 30 carols from 20 countriesinto a seamless, artistic tapestry. Thework is arranged in a group of five geo-graphically-themed suites that capturethe indigenous musical character ofeach unique culture. The first suite fea-tures the carols of Western Europe,

where the tradition of the noel – aFrench term meaning “Christmas” thatalso refers to the popular songs of theseason – first began. A spirited arrange-ment of the 14th century German carol“Good Christian Men, Rejoice” opensthe suite, which also includes a lush set-ting of the Austrian lullaby “Still, Still,Still” and a haunting alto solo on thetraditional Catalonian song, “The Sonof Mary.” A rousing 2/2 setting of theperennial French favorite “Angels WeHave Heard on High” provides a pow-erful finale, highlighting the rising andfalling melismatic sequence, “Gloria! Inexcelsis Deo!”

The carols of Eastern Europe comprisethe second suite. Graced by a certainplaintive and reflective tone, the selec-tions recall the Slavic carolers who forcenturies have walked from house tohouse on Christmas Eve. The opening“Ukrainian Bell Carol” with its famousfour-note ostinato motif has been givena dynamic new vocal setting with anoriginal sacred text by the arranger. The gentle rhythms of “Infant Holy,Infant Lowly” resemble the mazurka, atraditional Polish folk dance madefamous by Frédéric Chopin. Thepoignant melodic strains of the Czech“Rocking Carol” and the Bohemian“Come, Hear the Marvelous News”provide a fitting prelude to the closingsolemnity of the 16th century “Carol ofthe Russian Children” which featuresthe original Russian lyrics.

Many of the vibrant carols from theBritish Isles are well-known on this sideof the pond, in particular the hauntingGreensleeves (“What Child Is This?”)and the robust “God Rest You Merry,Gentlemen.” But perhaps less familiarare the charming 17th century Scottish“Baloo, Lammy” (“Lullaby, Little

Lamb”) and “The Snow Lay on theGround,” a spirited Irish air whichretains its original Latin refrain “Veniteadoremus Dominum.” Mr. Hayes bringsthe third suite to a festive conclusionwith the beloved anthem “Joy to theWorld,” featuring its famous melodicdescending scale and lyrics by the masterof English hymnody, Isaac Watts.

A unique rhythmic ambience character-izes the carols in the fourth suite fromCentral and South America. Theprominent role of Mary and the beauti-ful cadence of the Spanish lyrics furtherdistinguishes these seasonal songs. Both the Venezuelan folk carol “TheJourney” and the lilting “Going toBethlehem” from Chile recall Maryand Joseph’s journey to Bethlehem, which is often reenacted during thenine-day parranda in various LatinAmerican communities. Mary’s loveand protection of her Son are reflectedin the Mexican lullaby “The Babe”with its lyrical mezzo-soprano solo andthe evocative “At the Hour ofMidnight” from Puerto Rico. The suiteconcludes with the traditional “Song ofthe Wisemen,” reflecting the PuertoRican celebration of Three Kings Day,

or “Dia de Reyes,” where children putboxes of grass under their beds for thekings’ camels on the evening of January5th and awake to find gifts in theirplace the next morning.

The fifth and final suite celebrates car-ols from North America. The sequenceopens with the rich, sonorous tenor ofthe French-Canadian “The HuronCarol,” perfectly capturing the darknorthern winter and the light of blazingYule logs. This more meditative moodthen explodes into a joyous celebrationfrom the heart of the African-Americanspiritual tradition. From the soulful“Brightest and Best” and “Behold ThatStar” to the swing-infused “Rise Up,Shepherd, and Follow,” the lyrical mes-sage is always positive and proactive, compelling the listener to become partof the celebration. Mr. Hayes’ exuber-ant setting of the traditional favorite“Go, Tell It on the Mountain,” pro-vides a perfect finale to this uniquelyAmerican observance of the Christmasseason, with a proclamation – and achallenge: “Jesus Christ is born! (Now)go tell it on the mountain!”
