Introducing the Guest Speaker
Jean-Marc Lalonde is a Staff Scientist atScience North. His presentation is aboutgrowing native trees and shrubs from seeds thatyou’ve collected yourself. Science North is aplace where you learn to develop ideas. Aboutfive years ago a curious kid asked him a simplequestion.. "How should I plant these acorns?"He wasn’t sure at the time, but what started asan investigation for the answer has grown intohis favourite hobby. Growing the right trees inyour backyard adds beauty and value, supportsnature, and is something that anyone can do.
2014 Perennial Plant of the Year is Announced
Panicum (Switch grass)'Northwind' has chosen as thePerennial Plant of the Year2014 by the Perennial PlantAssociation. This well-behavedclumping ornamental grass willgrow up to two metres in a fullsun to partial shade location.Planted as an accent plant, ormass planted - it is sure toplease!

We often forget to thank the members who are workingbehind the scenes: Barb Knuff and the kitchen staff (which changes regularly,depending on who volunteers to help with the dishes);Colombe Charest, who promises good fortune; NadiaSnadjr, who keeps the table cloths crisp and clean; and NellaCertossi and the bakers who donate their wonderful treats atChristmas and throughout the year. Your efforts are muchappreciated.!
Notes From a Wandering Gardener…
Have you ever noticed how the best ideas seem to come from the most unlikely sources? This summer I madea brief visit to a small inner city home with a tiny paved outdoor space. The homeowners turned out to be someof the most innovative gardeners I've met in a long time. A wooden pallet leaned against a wall and backed withhessian sacking and house wrap made a perfect vertical garden for leafy greens, beans and climbers. More sackshung from the fence were filled with seed potatoes. PVC pipe had been converted into strawberry planters whiletomato and pepper plants graced a line of reclaimed baskets and pots between house and driveway.

Attention !
In the past, the Society organized bus trips to Canada Blooms and other venues. They were good fund raisersand everyone enjoyed themselves immensely. However, in the last few years, we were not allowed to make aprofit on these trips, and the cost of booking the bus is ever increasing. It has also been difficult to fill a singlebus due to lack of interest. Therefore, the Society will not be offering these trips in the future. We thank WayneHugli and Christine Osmond for their effort in organizing them in the past.
