An alumnus of Syracuse University, Samuel Pees earned his master’s degree in Geology in 1959. As a professional consultant, Pees was able to travel frequently to South America, Latin America, Indonesia and the Southeast. It was during these travels that he actively collected his collection of artwork, which includes work by well-known artists Tohny Joesof and Ricardo Carpani. The exhibition is divided into two main geographic regions, in the Far East the sprawling archipelago of Indonesia and its neighboring country Malaysia, and in the West, the islands of Grand Cayman, Haiti, and Grenada, and the South American country of Paraguay. Like the artists and artwork presented in Nyumba ya Sanaa: Works from the Maryknoll Collection, many of the works presented here also share a common interest in recording everyday life and activities of the communities in which the artists lived, as well as the utilization of similar media, including relief printmaking, oil and acrylic paints. The exhibition, A World Apart: Art From The Samuel Pees Collection, is being displayed as part of the SUArt Galleries Year of International Arts celebration that includes the exhibitions Nyumba ya Sanaa: Works from the Maryknoll Collection, Print Making Revolution: Mexican Prints and the Taller Gràfica Popular, Mithila Painting- The Evolution of an Art Form, and Contemporary Printmaking from South Africa.
